Moving to Japan

We are moving to Japan in a few months and will be there for 3 years. I just recently upgraded to the iPhone 6 plus and the thought of cancelling my cell phone and no longer having the same phone number that I've had for 11 years really bothers me; I don't want to lose my number (yes I'm weird, I get it).
I'm taking a shot in the dark by posting on here and hoping someone can give some insight.
Has anyone moved to a foreign country, kept their same service and number, and just added global services and kept their contract/service going that way?
I can live with limiting use of the phone - it's an iPhone, so I can live with being dependent on iMessaging, FaceTime, Skype, Tango, etc. We do plan on getting internet service at our future home.
Just want to get some advice. Thanks!

We understand the need to keep your phone number ar3773. We only allow long term suspension for military services. You can keep the phone active but the bill will continue to generate. You can temporarily suspend the line but only for a minimum time frame. Here is some information about our suspension option http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/suspend-service-faqs/ . I hope this information is helpful.

  • Does anyone know if iMessage will be free internationally for texting? moving to japan tomorrow and hoping it will be.

my wife and i are moving to japan and will be getting the iphone4s upon arrival.
obviously international texting will be an issue regarding pricing for plans through a carrier.
im hoping the new iMessage texting over wifi will solve this dilemma.  does anyone know if
it will work all the same overseas to use iMessage to text people back in the USA?

iMessage is absolutely free over wifi....doesnt matter if the sender is in Japan and the receiver in US.
I am in India and iMessage my friends in US and Europe for free.
Just your wifi/3G charges may apply....!!

  • Moving to Japan - suggestions for iMac

I will soon be moving to Japan (for about two years, though I may come back to visit) and would kind of like to bring my iMac with me. I only recently got it as a gift (less than a year old) so I'd really rather not sell it and buy another one in Japan, as I'd not get nearly the value it's worth most likely.
Does anyone have any advice for transporting it with me? My main options seem to be finding a way to pack it in one of my suitcases (thus losing a LOT of other packing room, and risking the integrity of the computer) or having it shipped over, which I believe would be very expensive.
I do have a laptop, and I could just leave my iMac behind, but it seems like such a waste to not use a brand new wonderful desktop for the majority of two years. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to handle this, and what would be the most efficient option? Thank you in advance

I have carried my iMac on buses, trains and airplanes as carry-on baggage with an iLugger. Fortunately mine is an Early '06 17" iMac. It fits in an overhead bin. The same iLugger will carry a 20", but if yours is 24" they make an iLugger for that one but I have no idea if it would work for you as carry-on. If not, then I would just take the MacBook or ship it. Do you still have the original packing cartons? Perhaps an Apple Store or another reseller has an extra one. Apple ships them out from the factory in China in these cartons.

That's an interesting question Chris let's look at the original text and parse it:
I just got Ipad 2 16g with wifi but i am moving to japan in a month. Can i use the verizon version of ipad in Japan network?
So the wifi iPad is what he's got and he's moving to japan in a month. Are we clear on that point? But when we get to the second sentence, "Can I use the verizon version of the ipad in Japan network? That's where I'm assuming he's not gotten the Verizon ipad YET. And that is how getting an AT&T iPad is going to solve his problem. Tx.
    The Verizon iPad has wifi.
I'm assuming he has a Verizon iPad (why else ask about Verizon?) and the OP simply did not specify "I just got an iPad 2 16GB, Verizon version".

  • Moving to Japan for Year - Will iCloud still work?

I figure the answer is yes but other than signing up for an internet provider in Japan is there anything different I have to do to access my photos and documents on my Mac that are stored in the iClould?
    Thank you.

I setup my PC and iPhone 4s to be able to use iCloud, but some how when i take a photo with my iPhone or manually drag a photo into a folder in my PC, no picture appears to be in icloud. However when i go on to the www.icloud.com and edit my contact there, it seems to sync with my iPhone...

  • Power Adapters: moving from Japan to Australia

I have purchased an iBook G4, iPod 5G & Airport Express Basestation while in Japan (2005).
Am I able to purchase 3 x Australian adapters for their respective power adapters? The World travel kit Is Not Enough.
And will these require any additional converters in Australia?

Is there anything with wireless networks, wi-fi that would be different than the standards here in North- America?
    No.
If nothing changes except for the plug, i was thinking for the macbook that she can just purchase the new australian power adapter.
The device or adaptor needs to take power which comes at 230 volts and 50Hz. Check the specifications for compatibility.

  • I just moved to Japan and my iTunes will not work on my new phone

I'm trying to make my new phone with an international number to link to my iTunes account.  Currently I cannot download apps, even free ones

Give your iPad a reset. Hold down the sleep and home keys until you see the silver apple. Let it reboot and try again.
Is it a blue tooth keyboard? Try to 'forget' and the re-pair the keyboard.
Slightly more drastic is to go into the settings and 'reset all settings'. You will have to retweak your iPad but that also can help.

  • Photosmart c4280 moved from US to Japan rejecting Japanese printer cartridges

I bought my printer originally in the US and have recently moved to Japan.  The printer cartridges sold in the US are not available here, but I found the exact equivilent.  Unfortunately, the printer is rejecting them saying that they are incompatible.  Is there any way to get the printer to accept cartridges HP 140 and HP 141 rather than HP 74 and HP 75, which were the ones I used in the US?  Thank you for your assistance.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

You will need to Contact HP and request a Regionalization Reset.  You will need to have access to your printer and computer while contacting HP and will need a set of the Japan region cartridges.  AFAIK there should not be a charge for this but you may need to  ask to speak to a manager as only a limited number of agents are trained in the regionalization reset procedure.

How can i purchase an app of japan store without change my itunes store? i have balance in my US ac so i cant change my stores, but the app i want to purchase in jp store is a free app.... i know apple dun allow balance spend in other countries but it is a free app

You cannot use the Japanese iTunes Store unless are physically present there and have a Japanese payment method. This applies even for free apps; you cannot get them from the Japanese iTunes Store if you are in the US.
If you are in Japan, you can set up a new iTunes Store account just to get free apps. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534
Read the steps carefully as the order in which you follow them is  critical. Note that you can do this only when creating a new Apple ID. You cannot use an existing ID.
If you have moved to Japan and wish to change the country of your account permanently, you can contact the iTunes Store and ask them to clear your remaining balance. You will need to be able to provide a Japanese payment method, though.
    Regards.

  • I need to change from Japan App Store to Australia App Store. I get this every time I try using My MacID: "This Apple ID is only valid for purchases in the Japanese iTunes Store. You will be switched to that Store." What next TY. JohnCahill

I moved from Japan to Australia. I need to change from Japan App Store to the Australian App Store. I get the following message every time I try using My MacID which was set up in Japan: "This Apple ID is only valid for purchases in the Japanese iTunes Store. You will be switched to that Store." At one point... by which path I do not remember... I was instructed to created a new ID. I fill out the new ID forms, but the address is rejected each time... quite confusing. Does it want a new name? But it says I cannot use an apple domain (tag?) even though I guess it has to be an apple address... ? So I have iTunes crdit cards purchansed in Australia, can't spend in AUstralian iTunes Store, get directed back to Japan each time, and can't open a new ID... What am I doing wrong? Thank you in advance.  John. Australia.

You must have a separate Apple ID registered in the other store along with a valid bank-issued charge card in the other country, and a legal billing address in the other country.
Sorry... But... You cannot use other countries itunes stores.
You must be within the Country with a Valid Billing Address and Credit Card for that Country to use the iTunes Store of that Country..

  • Kernel Panic in Japan - Please Help!

    Hi all,
I just recently moved to Japan and my wife and I just bought iPhones 2 days ago. Before the Kernel message came, I was getting messages on the computer that read that 'sync' something was having trouble and did I want to report the problem?... etc. I assumed that it had something to do with mobile me which we just started working with a few days ago. So I wondered if I needed to update the software. I started to do so and it asked me to restart. After I restart it tells me that it needs a start up disk or something like that... what I usually do at this point is restart the computer and hold down the option key, which is what I did... then something new happened. This popped up:

So here I am. 5 days old in Japan (I'll be here for 3 years). I'm hoping that I'll get some info here on how to fix it myself. Otherwise I have to take it into the Tokyo store which is very very far away.
    Thanks for looking,

    HI Chris,
Kernel panics are sometimes causes by hardware issues. Probably a good idea at this point to check the boot disk for errors.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Select your disk, and click First Aid.
    Click Verify Disk.
If the disk needs repairs, do one of the following:
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Repair Disk.
Checking a hard disk to see if it’s going to fail
You can check the health of your hard disk by checking its Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) status in Disk Utility. Most disk drives include S.M.A.R.T. hardware. Developed by IBM, S.M.A.R.T. hardware allows hard disks to test themselves for potential problems.
Starting up in “safe mode” may help you to diagnose problems you’re having with your computer.
To start up in safe mode:
Shut down your computer and wait 10 seconds.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key.
You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after your hear the startup tone, but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator (spinning gear).
To leave safe mode, restart the computer normally without holding down any keys during startup.

  • Using an iPad in Japan

I would like to buy an iPad that I will use in Japan with a Japanese cell phone provider. Are there any compatibility problems to worry about? Is it better to buy an iPad in Japan? Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hello-
I am looking a buying an iPad, but in October I'll be moving to Japan for a 1 year study abroad program. I know that US iPads aren't carrier locked (while Japanese ones are). If I go ahead and purchase one in the US, will I be able to have 3G connectivity in Japan? Softbank doesn't seem to offer much info on the subject, so I'm wondering if I will be able to use their data service without buying the iPad from them. I don't want a Japanese one because then it will be useless when I return to the states.
    Thanks!
    -Elliot
OK, this is how I understand it with Softbank. If you're just traveling there, on a tourist visa, you have no shot at getting a local data plan. If you're there on a green card (or whatever Japanese immigration call it) or a student Visa, AND you have a local address, you can get one. If you don't speak Japanese, bring someone along to translate for you.
So, depending on what you're doing there, you can get a local data plan.
