Moving to Lightroom 4 from elements 7

I have an PC that runs Windows XP on which I have all my photos organised within Photoshop Elements 7.  These are backed up onto an external hard drive using the Elements backup facility.  I have just bought a new PC running Windows 8.  I want to install an Adobe suite of software to handle my photos and I'm thinking of using Lightroom 4 (as I have almost 53,000 photos!).  I understand that Lightroom 4 cannot be loaded onto my old (XP) machine, nor can my old copy of Elements 7 be loaded onto my new (Windows 8) machine.  How can I transfer my photos and catalogue to maintain all my existing photoshop tags and albums?

Ask in the LR/ PSE forums. The catalogs are per se not compatible, but there may be ways. You might even need to consider getting PSE 11 along with LR just for that...

  • Moving my Lightroom installation from an external to an internal disk

I was having hard disk capacity issues so have been running Lightroom on an external USB drive - and it's been working fine. But I am installing a new drive internal to my machine in the coming days. How can I move Lightroom from the external drive, along with the Lightroom catalog, to the new drive? Do I need to uninstall and then reinstall? I want to be sure that I don't lose my settings or, of course, the catalog!
By the way, I still have an old Lightroom Library from the first version. So, I have this folder setup:
    Lightroom Library folder
    Lightroom Database.lrdb (old database file)
    Lightroom Catalog folder (folder)
    Lightroom Previews.lrdata (old folder)
Can I simply move the Lightroom Catalog folder to the new disk and delete the old database file and old previews folder? Finally, I routinely archive Lightroom Catalog.lrcat but not as frequently the growing Lightroom Catalog Previews.lrdata - I assume that it would be rebuilt if needed after a crash, no? Thanks!

Thanks. I do want to bring over all my presets and settings. If I install anew, won't I lose all of that? Also, I am not at 1.3.1 - can I install the newest version on the new disk and then safely import all my data and settings? Below is what I think I can do - am I right? Thanks!
    Dilip
[EXTERNAL DRIVE Z:, NEW INTERNAL C:]
Install 1.3.1 on my C: drive (I assume that once I give it my valid key, it will work even though it's not installing over an existing installation)
Run Lightroom from C: [how to copy over my preferences and presets?] - it will not see any catalogs, so let it create a new catalog on C:
Import from Catalog - just point to z:\Lightroom Catalog.lrcat - I assume that a c:\Lightroom Catalog.lrcat will then be built that would be identical to the one on the Z: drive (would it be faster to just copy the .lrcat over and then open that catalog? also, I have several GB of previews -- would previews not take a long time to be rebuilt, or could I copy those over, too?)

I installed elements 12 on a Win 8.1 computer and moved all my photos from my old XP machine.  I updated to elements 12.1.  Now, many/most of my photos will not open because I do not have "permission" to open the files.  How do I fix this so I can work with MY photos?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • Converted to Lightroom from Elements 5

I installed the trial version from a link found in a message on this forum and imported from Elements 5. Luckily, I only had something less than 3000 images loaded into Elements and hadn't done serious tagging on most of them. I decided to use this trial version of Lightroom because I only decided yesterday to switch from Elements to Lightroom and ordered the shipped version so, being impatient, I would have to go with the trial version tomorrow anyway.
How did the import go? Well, not perfectly. It went well until the end when Lightroom crashed just after it finished importing. I wasn't even touching the computer when it did that. However, when I brought it up it looked OK.
For some reason it decided to have some of my keyword tags nested and some not. In other words, the same tag would appear nested under something and not nested. I had no idea how to merge tags (surely this is something one would want to do?) so I think I ended up losing some tagging, but I can live with that. Some other tags had lost their hierarchical structure but at least weren't duplicated.
Folders also had lost their structure but that looks to be just an issue of dragging and dropping to fix it. They aren't physical folders in Lightroom.
My most serious issue for me is the capture date. Elements supported not knowing the day and/or month. They are coming in here differently. July 1952 is June 30, 1952. I had previously checked and Exifer does display just what I entered in Elements: if only the year, then only the year, if the month and year, then the month and year. This is not coming over in Lightroom.
I have thousands of slides we are scanning and I almost never know the exact day any slide was taken. I'm lucky to know the month. I was overjoyed that the capability existed in Elements to specify what you do know and not have to make up more that you don't know. I don't know how that is actually stored in the exif info, but like I said, Exifer did understand it.
Any suggestions about what to do? Elements can't simply have used the last day of the month before or the last day of the year before because surely you could specify those dates explicitly.
I'm going to have to get used to working with Lightroom. I was able to do things pretty quickly in Elements. Lightroom has a lot of stuff displayed on both sides and I have to figure out how to move around quickly. In paricular, the metadata area doesn't stay put to type in location, for example. The use more metadata fields and not just tags is one of the major reasons I am switching to Lightroom. I have lots of tags as well. I guess recent keywords are going to be very important.
So now I have to go read the help, which so far doesn't seem very helpful.
I had played around with Beta 4 so I know something about Lightroom.

Can't be physical folders because they came in structured incorrectly compared to my disk. OK, they are physical folders in the sense that they contain what the corresponding physical folder contains but they do not need to have the same structure as your physical folder system.
I was able to drag a couple of folders into the same relationship as my physical structure and it didn't do anything to my actual file system. Hum. I'm going to have to play around with this. The help is not very good.
Version sets did not survive together in any way. Stacks seem to be stacked. I had more version sets, though. I guess I stack them.

  • I need to transfer all photos to an external hard drive. Many photos have been moved around or deleted from computer hard drive, but still have a very full hard disk. Are the photos with questionmarks in Lightroom still taking up hard disk space? I'm so l

    Hi folks,
My hard disk is full. I already moved lots of photos from other folders on the hard disk to other external hard drives, so there are a lot of question marks in Lightroom. So, are those photos still taking up room on the computer hard disk? I want to move everything I have in Lightroom off of the computer to another external hard drive, in hopes that will free up space. I watched a tutorial, and read some things about it, but I need simple instructions please.

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

It's important to keep in mind that the picture files are NOT stored in the Organizer. They are not stored in Lightroom or Bridge either...
The organizer is based on a catalog which stores the pictures properties, mainly the location of the pictures on your drive(s). It's the same idea of catalogs in Lightroom, and the nice thing is that Lightroom can convert organizer catalogs to its own format. The most obvious way for you will be to use Lightroom.
Bridge is a file browser which is a different way than to use catalogs.

  • I am trying to chose an upgrade from iPhoto to either lightroom or photoshop elements 10

I am trying to chose an upgrade from iphoto to either lightroom or photoshope elements 10, and would appreciate any comments/advice
    Thanks for your time
    Sandy

Elements and LIghtroom are different categories of app. Elements is a pretty straight up editor. Lightroom is database driven photo manager with lossless processing. Simply, Lightoom would be the upgrade to iPhoto.
That said, there is no upgrade path from iPhoto to these apps. You will need to export from iPhoto to the Finder - a process that means you will lose something of the work you have done in iPhoto already.
If your reason for upgrading is to add editing power then you can use Elements as an extenral editor to iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
If the Limitation you see in iPhoto is primarily photo managment then have a look at Aperture. Half the price of Lightroom, much better manager, complete with OS integration.
If you're shooting Raw then Lightroom or Aperture are the way to go.
You can set Elements as an external editor in either.

  • How do I take an edited photo from lightroom 5 to elements 12?

How do I take an edited photo from lightroom 5 to elements 12?

Marsha, you seem to be a bit confused or perhaps uninformed about how Lightroom works. Lightroom should be at the beginning of your workflow. Whether you are working on raw images or JPEG, or whatever, Lightroom is where you should begin. None of the adjustments that you make using Lightroom are applied to the image. They are saved in the catalog progressively as you work on the image. Photoshop Elements sits in a secondary position in the typical workflow. In Lightroom, there is an option to "Edit in", and Photoshop Elements or Photoshop or whatever editor you have chosen will be one of the choices. You go to Elements to do things that cannot be done or can be done more efficiently in the other program. When you have finished making the adjustments in Elements a new copy of the image containing both the Lightroom adjustments and the Elements adjustments will be created, and will be added to the Lightroom catalog.
If you want an edited copy of your image in Elements than you would want to use the export function in Lightroom to export a copy that would include all adjustments that have been made. A typical workflow would be to maintain your master set of images, including copies created by Elements because of additional editing in that program, and then export JPEG copies suitable for posting on the web, for e-mail, or for sending to a lab to be printed. After those copies that were exported have been used for their intended purpose, they can be deleted, and you only have your master images to maintain in case there are other adjustments or new approaches in the future.

  • As with others I can't export from Lightroom 4 to Elements 10 or any of the Nik products except HDR

As with others I can't export from Lightroom 4 to Elements 10 or any of the Nik products except HDR Efex pro. Surely this has been fixed? If not it is appalling. It has been going on for too long in a program that has supposed to have some integrity

I am able edit pictures in PSE (Photoshop elements) 10 BUT i am unable to edit videos in PRE (premiere elements) 10. I will uninstall LR 4.1 RC1 and then install RC2 and use a backup of the catalog. Lets see if that works.

  • Transfer Photos from Elements 4 on Windows XP to Lightroom on a new Mac

Can I transfer photos including the metadata and tags from Elements 4 (windows XP)  to a Mac running the
Maverick OS and Lightroom.   If so what is the best process.

There is no real path at this time to upgrade a PSE 4 catalog to a Lightroom catalog. Existing versions of Lightroom allow upgrades of PSE 6 through PSE 11 catalogs.
The best you can do is have PSE 4 write the metadata to the photo files, and then import the photos into Lightroom. You will lose certain items in the PSE 4 catalog such as version sets, stacks, collections, notes and possibly a few other things. Your tags should be transferred (although even with tags there are some bugs)
Another option is to convert the PSE 4 catalog to a PSE 12 catalog (using the 30-day free trial of PSE 12) and then wait until LR supports conversion of PSE 12 catalogs, in which case you would not lose the aforementioned items (except notes still will not transfer)

  • Not all my Jpeg files from elements moved to Revel, why?

I went in to check what files from elements were downloaded in the new Revel system and a significant number of my Jpeg pictures did not move over.  Is there a reason?  OMG I hope figuring out which ones weren't moved will be easy like "download whole elements library" or something to that effect.
I got an email that said my download was complete but on some page somewhere in the MANY places I have been to sort this out  the "all files have been downloaded" was not yet highlighted so does that mean that things are not done yet?
OMG I am so frustrated.  I am ready to store my pictures on Amazon Cloud.  Seems like a more friendly system.  I am not a tech savy person.  I know enough to be frustrated.

QUESTIONS ABOUT FILES TRANSITIONING TO REVEL
Your album structure will be moved to Revel along with your JPEGs. There is not a concept of albums within albums in Revel, so the file structure will be flattened.
Will my web galleries be moved to Revel?
Your web galleries will become albums in Revel. Current album links will continue to work.
Will my group albums be moved to Revel?
Group albums will not be moved, but the JPEG photos in the albums will be moved to Revel.
Take a look at these and let me know what questions remain.

  • Moving to Aperture 3 from Lightroom 3

Do I understand correctly that bringing images into Aperture 3 from Lightroom 3 will cost me the adjustments I've made in Lightroom?
If that's the case, what's the best strategy for proceeding? Stay in Lightroom?

    Alexander CK wrote:
Here's a compromise I've worked out. In Lightroom, export your images (maybe only those that have adjustments) to high-quality JPEG, in the same folder as the masters. Also make sure all metadata is kept in sidecar XML files.
Then, import the folders as projects into Aperture, and choose to import raw+jpeg, with jpeg as the master by default.
That way, you have the Lightroom rendition (with all adjustments) available, though of course you can no longer incrementally tweak the adjustments. OTOH, if you want to mess with adjustments, you can always go back to the RAW file on a case-by-case basis (and you do have the jpeg sitting around as a "guide").
Thanks, that sounds like a plan worth trying.
I am torn; I love the editing and image quality in LR (that, and the LR betas have been more stable than Aperture's initial releases), but LR's DAM is quite lacking --- in particular, transparently relocating selected images (e.g., all older images with ratings < 5) is impossible; LR's project hierarchy always has to match the physical volume/folder organization on the disk. This is quite lame once you acquire enough images. Sigh.
Interesting. I agree that editing and image quality is very good in Lr; I haven't tried Aperture 3, though I was an Aperture 2 user before moving to Lightroom. But I think that Lr's DAM aspect is clearly superior to Aperture and I am leery about moving back to Aperture primarily for that reason. I just much prefer the Aperture interface, and its beautiful integration with OS X, iPhone, iPad, etc.
    Thanks for your thoughts.

  • Moving between Lightroom and Elements Editor

What I have found is that when I upgraded from PSE12 to 13, my Lightroom 5.6 still selected PSE12 in the list of external editors. I had to use the preferences menu to select the right PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe in the Program Files/Adobe/Photoshop Elements 13 folder. I got a message stating that Photoshop Elements was already selected as external editor. In that message box, there is a button with the option to 'change anyway', which I did. Now LR correctly opens PSE13 when I choose Edit in Elements.
