moving to Logic Pro (back really I was a Logic user on PC)
What is the best amount of RAM to start with in the best chip pair arrangement?
As in 2 chips x 4 gig = 8 gigs total. would like to leave room to up grade so starting with either 8 or 12 gigs. Using Logic and Kontact sounds files.

Hi
Indeed, early MacPros work best with RAM in matched pairs.... I had assumed that the OP was working with a MacPro post 2009, rather than a 2008 model
Perhaps these links will help clarify for the OP:
http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/MacPro_Early2008_MemoryDIMMDIY.pdf
http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Mac_Pro_2009_2010_Memory_DIMMsDIY.pdf
For 2009-2010 models:
"Single-Processor Memory
For optimal memory bandwidth, all three memory channels should be used, and memory should be balanced across the three channels.
Dual-Processor Memory
For optimal memory bandwidth, all six memory channels should be used, and memory should be balanced across the six channels.
Note: Populating slot 4 (or 8) slightly drops maximum memory bandwidth, but depending on the applications used, overall system performance may benefit from the larger amount of memory."

I have a problem with my motherboard and my battery of my 2010 macbook pro 13". It was just serviced with a new screen, keyboard, and logic board. How much will a new battery and motherboard cost and would it be worth it or should I just get a new computer. It was about 300 dollars to get it serviced last week. if it adds up to much past 600 dollars I will just get a new one. THANKS FOR ANY HELP!
P.S During classes today it began beeping in my bag. Like three kind of long steady beeps then a short pause, and when I opened it I couldn't see anything but it was on so I turned it off and back on.

Depends on what options your Apple store offers - if they can do a depot repair (where they send it out), that's around $300 for all parts & labor.
If the store doesn't have that option, a logicboard is around $600, battery $80-$100, from what I've seen.
If they JUST replaced the logicboard, you absolutely should NOT have to pay for another replacement - the replacement is covered by a warranty. If they want you to pay for it, make sure you have a copy of the receipt for the work that was recently completed so you can show it to them. They have no reason to charge you for another logicboard.

All you need is a plug adaptor, if required. Apple sells an adapter kit:

If you activated Find My Mac before it was lost or stolen, you can track it only if it is connected to the Internet by Wi-Fi. What you cannot do is track your computer using a serial number or other identifying number. You cannot expect Apple or anyone else to find your computer for you. You cannot recover your loss unless you insure your device for such loss. It is not covered by your warranty. Be sure to report the loss or theft to the local police. Have the serial number handy. If your Mac is found it cannot be returned to you if you don’t have the serial number and proof of purchase.

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

Install or Reinstall Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

I tried to update the latest software update for my MacBook pro (which was on 10/12) and after it started to update it restarted like normal but when it started back up it was running painfully slow and none oft programs will open. They all quit unexpectedly. iTunes microsoft word all of them quit unexpectedly. Help!

Exact same problem with my 2010 MBP 2.4ghz 4gb ram 10.6.8. iTunes said update was needed, Software Update ran with various updates including a security update, truthfully didn't pay much attention, I always install the Apple updates. After the restart it took 3-4 times longer than normal to get to the login screen, same to get to the desktop but I'm familiar with that occurring on update restarts. Unfortunately it got worse from there. Performed a full shutdown and startup. Same long boot.  After the desktop finally loads every mouse button press received a 2 minute beachball. I use menu-meters and both processors are under 10%. Waited a few minutes for disk utilities to launch, repair permissions estimates 3 hours for a typical <10 minute process. Activity monitor shows nothing over 10% CPU most of the time however ReportCrash pops to the top often. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW zero problems until this update.

i dropped my macbook pro off my couch and when it landed it was shut, i opened it and it was on a grey sceen so i shut it down with the button and when i turned it back on it was kind of slow but not so much anymore. i quit all of my applications before i shut down and i noticed that when there are no more things t quit and i click "hide finder" its not grey anymore it still gives me the option to hide it when i dont need to, little things bug me and i just got this laptop, i just want to know if i should be worried

I suggest you immediately make a backup of your data. You don't know if or when the computer will show some symptoms from the drop. You may want to, for piece of mind, take the computer to an authorised service center for assessment. No one here can assess any internal damage you may have done.

  • Can tracks recorded in Pro Tools be moved into Logic?

I'm orchestrating a song for a friend of mine, who recorded vox and a guitar part in PT. How can I move these into the L8 world?

I'm primarily a Logic user, but I do have access to Pro Tools 7.1.1 LE and a Digi 002. Recently my band recorded drums at a studio via Pro Tools 7.1 and the question of how to get these tracks into Logic without having to remap the track positions came up.
There seems to be three viable solutions I have come across:
    1. Export to OMF (no automation data, or plugins will be transferred, just the sound of the dry tracks and positions of the tracks)
    2. Export to AAF (supposedly the volume automation settings will be transferred as well as the position of the tracks but not plugins)
    3. Bounce to individual tracks and remap them into a Pro Tools or Logic session/project.
I for one love the idea of not having to put together all the drum tracks we recorded back into their positions in either Pro Tools or Logic so option 1 & 2 appeal to me. The problem with Pro Tools is you need an add-on called Digitranslator to export files into OMF and AAF files and that runs about $500. Quite ridiculous if you ask me seeing that most other DAWs have this feature built in. If you do have access to Digitranslator I would give that a try before resorting to bouncing all the individual tracks and remapping them into the DAW of your preference.
However, there seems to be problems exporting crossfades between Pro Tools and Logic while using OMF or AAF formats although I don't have first hand experience exporting files with crossfades between the two DAWs yet. I will have to give that a try sometime soon.

  • Acrobat XI Pro is really sluggish

Just wondering if anyone might know why after upgrading to CS6, Acrobat XI Pro runs really slow when viewing documents - can take up to 10 seconds to load a document under 1mb. Also the Outlook PDF Previewer has the same issue, takes a long time to load the PDF, sometimes up to 30 seconds. Driving me nuts much, very much. Just uninstalled it and put 9.3 back on my system but because 9.3 was for Vista, I'm running Windows 7 and the Outlook Previewer won't work at all now, grrr.
    Cheers!

I'm experiencing the same thing after upgrading from Acrobat Pro 9 to Acrobat Pro XI.
I have a 2.8 Ghz MacBook Pro 15 Retina w/ 16Gb RAM and Acrobat Pro XI is unbearably slow.
It takes several seconds litterally from selecting a search result until Acrobat updates the document.
Searching with indexes is quite fast though -- it's the hyperlink navigation that really makes working with PDF a productivity killer.
I noticed that Acrobat Pro XI is a 32-bit app on Mac OSX (10.8.3). Since hyperlink navigation involves a significant interaction with the OS itself,
I suspect that there must be some really ancient library still in there that causes a performance bottleneck -- at least for Mac OSX.

  • Has Leopard moved on from  Tiger? Really?

okay so 10.5 was all this its going to be big, it's going to be the way forward and its going to deliver so much more than Mac OS X has ever done since they launched 10.1 back in 2001. Now all excited that when I installed 10.5 I was going to see the see Tomorrow, Today. To be sadly presented with a re-modeled skin version of 10.4, okay some new apps, some upgraded but nothing that would indicate to a typical user that mac has changed since the launch of 10.4. I have been a mac user for 20 years and to watch the change over the years has been awesome, but to come to 10.4 which I knew as soon as I started using it, the question remained "Next time how will they better it" and apple said "we will just design new skins for apps and the OS and call it 10.5".
The Point Im getting at is that mac os 10.5 has not moved forward for a typical day to day general user. Ical was a simple, easy on the eyes program, its got worse, Safari has never changed or moved on in shape and design for a long long time. Apple focused on this useless way forward, in reality users want a more focused way of working. On the Monday following the launch of 10.5 my employees logged in to their computers and was using 10.5 only one person noticed something had changed out of 110 people in the company and that one person said "Has my computer been updated?, because there are many new useless things on here I'll never use." 1 Person who did work for apple and thinks the computer may has been upgraded. It's still better than Vista because everyone knows thats a chicken soup made from chicken ....
I think apple could have really focused on what the user really wants, no what apple thinks looks good just to out do Windows. I use 10.5 and its nothing better than what 10.4 was.
But let me and my company know what you make of the new OS X. 10.5

I disagree. Though Leopard clearly has some issues that will need to be worked out, I find it a significant step forward. The underpinnings are much improved (for instance, early tests indicate that threading between multiple processor cores is much more efficient), Spotlight is vastly improved, much of the management is better organized, Time Machine (though again with some issues to resolve) provides an innovative and easy to use backup system, Quick Look is very handy as is Spaces, and the included applications have mostly seen nice improvement. Yes, there's some eye candy, and some features (Stacks, for instance) are perhaps not as well thought out and flexible as they could be. But overall I find Leopard to be a solid, evolutionary improvement, as much as Tiger was over Panther.
Safari has never changed or moved on in shape and design for a long long time.
Sure it has. There have been lots of new features. None of them are huge, and few are really innovative (Web Clip holds a lot of possibilities), but there's only so much you can do with a browser and Apple is clearly concentrating on providing a solid, well-thought-out, easy to use browser. You can disagree whether or not they've achieve that goal, but it's not correct to say that Safari hasn't moved on; or you could say that for just about any browser (IE 7 in Windows "moved on in shape and design", but in that case most people would agree that it was most definitely not a good thing).
As with any product, your needs may or may not take advantage of any of the new features in Leopard, or may find them less impressive or useful. But that doesn't mean that someone else won't find a given feature or addition very useful and appealing indeed. Personally, and speaking as someone who supports over 200 users, I find that having users not be immediately aware that a new OS has been installed to be a good thing; unlike with Vista, we don't have massive retraining issues to deal with.
Just my opinion, but that's what you asked for.

Had 3G, moved to 3GS.  Backed up 3G and restored 3GS from backup with no problem on a Dell computer.  But now when I want to add songs, I get itunes message of death that the new iphone is synced to another computer and now wants to erase everything.  How can I add music without erasing everything on my new iphone?

Yes, I was aware of this but the phrase "Any items imported from audio CDs or acquired from other sources will not copy from your device to the iTunes library." is what worries me.  Will this eliminate my Notes, Calendar Events, etc or will it apply mostly just to the music?

  • During a power outage, my mac was on and when it came back on, it was reset. No pictures, documents, etc. How can I fix this?

My mac was on during a power outage, and when I turned it back on, it was reset. I cannot find any of my pictures or documents. I would really like to fix this on my own. Does anyone have any ideas? The memory seems to be cleared.

There may be no fix. The outage may have caused a damaging electrical spike.
    Try this first:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
If this does not work, then try this:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
