Moving to new laptop from .mac backup

My iBook (running Tiger) died last week, but fortunately I was able to quickly backup the entire hard drive using the .Mac Backup program beforehand. Now I've got a MacBook Pro coming (running Leopard), and I'm wondering how best to do a setup and restore. Should I...
1. Simply restore the entire backup, replacing the existing Leopard install, and then reinstall (upgrade) to Leopard
2. Expand the backup to an external Firewire drive, then use Leopard to setup the computer from that drive (assuming that's possible in Leopard)
3. Partition the new hard drive and restore my old drive to one of the partitions (the primary initial problem being that my old drive has about 110 GB of data and the new drive is only 160 GB total)
4. Restore in some other creative way I haven't yet considered
5. Take my new computer to the Apple Store and let them figure it out.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, since I'll be new to Leopard. I've got to get back up and running in the quickest way possible, but yet I don't want to do something that will cause me more trouble/work later on.

Tim
I don't know anything about .Mac but I'd be surprised if it provides you with a full bootable backup.
You wrote <I don't want to do something that will cause me more trouble/work later on. >
That being the case I would strongly suggest that you procure for yourself a FireWire external drive, and on a regular basis make a complete bootable clone of your entire hard drive. It's the only real insurance for that rainy day when something horrible happens and your computer crashes.

  • Question: How do I open CS5.5 after migrating to new laptop w/ Mac OS 10.8.4?

question: How do I open CS5.5 after migrating to new laptop w/ Mac OS 10.8.4? I received a dialogue box stating I needed to run Java SE runtime (or something to that effect), when I ok'd it, and try to open cs5.5 Indesign, the program quits on startup. If I uninstall program & reinstall, will my documents be unscathed, or are they toast? Help!

    Hi Art Bunny Rabbit,
Migration from one machine to other causes problem most of the time. So I recommend you to reinstall the software. Done worry none of your documents will be effected.

  • If I restored my new iPhone from iCloud backup, and I delete the old iPhone backup to make room on iCloud to back up my new phone, will it delete everything on the new phone?

If I restored my new iPhone from iCloud backup, and I delete the old iPhone backup to make room on iCloud to back up my new phone, will it delete everything on the new phone?

I have this exact same issue.  Replaced my iPhone 4s with the new iPhone 5s, setting up my new iPhone 5s to restore from iCloud.  This completed and now I am unable to delete my old iPhone 4s iCloud backup (consuming 15.1 GB of my 20GB allocation).  How can I delete it, so that I get my 15 GB back?  I am not going to invest in additional iCloud storage, because I will be 15 GB down from the off.

Unable to get new iphone 5c recognized as a device in itunes for syncing purposes. Backup from old phone made yesterday and now would like to sync new phone from that backup.  Any advice appreciated.

Even if I enable the new phone to backup automatically with the cloud? Wouldn't that keep everything up to date? And if I use the software, couldn't I choose to copy just the music & messages to I tunes, and not select anything else to keep the data from the new phone intact? Sorry, this is confusing. I like these products, but Apple really fails on portability. I had this same issue with Ipod years ago, and it ****** me off then too. They sold me (the last time I lost everything) on the icloud, telling me it backed EVERYTHING up. I'm a bit upset at store personnel right now to say the least.
Sorry I was under the impression you still wanted to restore from your old phone backup.
yes if you enable backup on your new phone everything will be up to date.
Yes you can use the software to move music and message to your computer - you would need to add the music back to your iTunes media library.
I provided a link with what is backup to icloud.  YOur purchased item is always tied to your apple id.

Go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings.  This will return it to its new out of the box condition.  Go through the setup screens again and you will be given the option to restore from a previous iTunes or iCloud backup (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109).

  • I am moving my iTunes to a new laptop (from XP to 7). I can sync my iPod Classic but my iPod Touch 2nd Gen freezes.

    Hi,
I have an old laptop running WinXP Home SP3 with iTunes 10.2x installed. I sync my old iPod Classic120GB and a newer iPod Touch 2nd Gen 8GB. I recently bought a new laptop with Windows 7 Pro. I am moving everything to the new one. I did not have a problem with the old iPod. But when I tried to sync the Touch it just freezes while trying to backup the existing contents. I have read a few support docs and have tried some of them where I have to tweak some of Window's Admin tools. I have also uninstallled and installed iTunes. There are so many things to try in the troubleshooting steps that I can't really figure out which is which. I also can't backup the contents of my current iPod Touch by attaching the device and right-clicking on it. The Backup context menu just isn't there.
I currently have iTunes v10.3x and I need some "serious" help. :-) I did the Run Diagnostic with the device attached. I looked at the report and saw something that might be the cause. I am running iTunes not as the administrator. But if I try to run it as an admin, the Library is now different and I'm just "scared" to screw things up some more.
    Thank you.
    Horace
P.S. Should I send the diagnostic report? Is it safe? If not what info should I exclude? Thanks.

" When I did this, my library showed all the music I have "purchased" from itunes but did not have the music that I downloaded a long time ago through itunes from my old CDs."
    Correct.
" How can I get that music to show up in my library now on my new computer?  "
Copy it from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer.
The sync is one way - computer to ipod.

  • Restore system to new laptop from Time machine backup???

Hi I understand from reading a number of discussion that you can do a full system restore to a new HD (on the same laptop). If I upgrade my laptop am I able to 'transfer'/restore the whole system from a Time Machine backup to the new laptop? Meaning all, setting, apps, files etc etc? Is there a way to do this?

Yes indeed. It's about as close to painless as possible.
And you can transfer directly from the old Mac (usually best), or Time Machine backups, or a "clone" of it. Your choice.
Your best bet is to use +Setup Assistant.+ See #19 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for details.

  • Restoring Pictures from .mac backup utility to a new G5

Does anyone know how to do this? The migration assistant would not bring all my iphoto library pictures onto my new G5. At the Apple store they tried to export the photos from my old G4 onto a external drive and then bring them into the G5. When I got a chance to review the photos in IPhoto 6 (I originally had approx 5,000 pictures on the G4) on my new G5, it was evident that many photos are missing. When I scroll through the Library there are now sections that show hundreds of white squares where photos used to be. The people at the Apple store said the restore function of the .mac backup utility should not be used to import photos onto a different computer because they are "tied to a different user folder" that resides on the G4 and not on the new G5. My guess is that I probably need to get these actually reimported into Iphoto 6 or copied into the dated subfolder that Iphoto 6 is "seeing" but which is empty. The funny thing is that my slide shows all tranferred but many of them also are empty. I almost wish that I didn't purchase the G5. Can any of you offer me suggestions om how to resolve this?
    Power Mac G4 and G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Polecat:
Do you still have access to the iPhoto Library folder on the G4? If so just copy it to the G5, either over a LAN or via Firewire and Target Mode into the Pictures folder on the G5. Then download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
When you next launch iPhoto on the G5 the library should be complete.
    Do you Twango?

  • Transferring playlist to new laptop from external hard drive and old laptop

I've seen similar topics before but none exactly describing my situation. I currently have itunes installed on my work laptop, but have the majority of my music on my external 120GB hard drive. When I add songs to itunes, I add them from the music folder on my external hard drive, thus the external hard drive must be plugged in to be able to play my music. However, if I import a cd it gets saved to my C drive on my work laptop under the itunes music folder and gets played from here.
I recently purchased a new personal laptop and would like to export my entire music library and all playlists from my current work laptop and external hard drive so that I would be able to have all my music in itunes on my new laptop without having to manually adding songs and changing the song info again. I worried that if I copy my itunes music folder to my new laptop it will look for the E drive (external hard drive) to play them rather than my new laptop hard drive. What's the easiest way to accomplish this task?? Please advise.
    Thanks..

    Hi dalbatross,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
Did you set up your new computer by creating a Time Machine backup and restoring from it?
If so, the Events and Projects that were on your internal Macintosh HD would copied to your new computer.
Here is another way to copy the events & projects to the new computer from the external drive:
iMovie Help: Work with multiple libraries
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3fa25bae7
Copy or move projects, events, or clips between libraries or hard disks
Connect a hard disk that contains the target library to your computer, or copy the target library to your computer.
Choose File > Open Library, and choose an option from the submenu. You can choose from recently opened libraries at the top of the submenu, locate an existing library on your computer, or create a new library.
The selected library is opened in the Libraries list, with the first event selected and its contents displayed in the browser.
In the Libraries list, select the event that contains the item you want to move or copy.
In the browser, select the item you want to move or copy.Note:  To select multiple items, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
    Do one of the following:
To move items between events or libraries: Drag the clip or project to another event or library.
To copy items between events or libraries: Option-drag the clip or project to another event or library by first starting to drag and then holding down the Option key as you drag.
    Cheers,

  • Restoring Itunes library on new laptop from iphone 4

Hi, my old laptop broke without having made a backup. I now got a new Acer laptop and would like to transfer my tunes from my iphone onto my new itunes library. How do I do that?
Also, my phone does not ring when someone calls. It buzzes, the alarm works, it plays music through its speakers but just no ringtone.
    Help please.

While roaminggnome is correct that you should have taken backups it may not be too late to save some of your media...
    You should be able to:
Backup the device to the new installation
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!
