Moving to RAID 0

Hi all.
I recently upgraded my hard drive from 1TB to 2TB. I bought two 2TB hard drives because of I planned to run RAID 1, but after I cloned one of the 2TB drives and removed the old 1TB I decided to back up a different way.   I have most of the stuff I wanted to back up still on the old hard drive, and another method seemed like a better route. My son uses it for gaming quite a bit and RAID 1 seemed counter productive, and not as safe.
So, will I be able to move my new 2TB drive to RAID 0 with my other new 2TB drive even though I'm using one right now?
Anything else this computer Noob needs to consider?
Once again I find myself at the mercy of the much more educated HP Forum members lol.
Here is my Computer Specs:

Hi there.
You can setup RAID 0 with these drives, but keep in mind that you have to reformat the one you're currently using when setting up the RAID array - it's necessary to format both drives which will lead to data loss.
As for the array, indeed RAID 0 is what most people would prefer for a gaming system and it will help games when loading, which is a read function, and yet I personally would implement a RAID 1. RAID 0 boosts performance, but isn't as reliable if you don't backup regularly your important data. Also, games load faster, but you will not have better FPS and no redundancy, which basically means that if one of the drives fail, you loose all the data stored there.
Hope this helps.
Cheers!

  • Moving SATA RAID 0 array

Any tips on how to move a SATA RAID 0 array between machines?  Is it possible?  Array was set up on an NF3 chipset.  Can it be moved to an NF4 or 5, or even an Intel or Promise?  If it includes the boot partition can you use Win XP Pro repair console to install correct Win XP drivers, asuming the array can be installed?

sorry for not getting back sooner, but thanks for input.  That makes me feel a litlle better, but with all the RAIdDproblems I see on the boards, it makes me wonder if RAID is worth the hassle.

when I attempted installation I have been unplugging the current boot drive.  The first screen I am given after selecting the us / english / keyboard stuff and clicking the "install now" is the screen asking for drivers.
I know that windows must be recognizing the raid drives because I could continue installation but only if I use the 32 bit drivers and corresponding os version.

save apropriate drivers to the floppy disk provided. mark on the disk which version they are and when they were released.
1st enable all sata devices in bios. Enable NV raid and sil raid in bios if nessisary.
2nd set boot priority to dvd/cd.
    3 save and exit
4 put in xp/xp64 bit install disk
5 as it boots up the lower left hand screen will say "hit f6 for additional drivers" or something similar.  Hit f6
6 press S to load drivers from the floppy.
    7 put correct disk in.
8 Select the nessisary drivers.  For NVraid there are 2 drivers to load from the disk. I did it by loading (1) then (2)
9 It will eventually reboot. when it does hit f10 to enter nvraids config. Set up your raid set up. exit out
10 continue with xp/xp64 bit install.
I've used sil in the past and it was nearly identicle. Have fun

  • K8n neo2 moving from raid on ports 1,2 to 3,4 - format?

Hi, will i loose all my info on my hdds if i movied from raid0 on ports 1,2 to ports 3 and 4? (k8n neo2)
also, does raid0 limit ocking? i get reboots even by ocking more than 208mhz fsb
    thanks for any info

Done it before and as said , move 1->3 and 2->4 .(this is exactly like i did)
Remember to change the enabled sata raid ports in ide raid setup in bios
from 1/2 to 3/4. Then set the boot order all over as raid will be last in the list after å boot with the change.
    Nothing gets destroyed .

  • Moving Portable Home Directories from one server to another

I am in the process of migrating users from an older xserve running 10.3 with open directory to a new xserve running 10.5. So far, everything is looking good with the migration, the only major issue I'm running into in my testing is with Portable Home Directories. Presently, the portable home directory on the computer still points to the old server for existing user accounts after they are moved to the new open directory server. On the 10.3 server, the home directories are all mounted under /Volumes/Home, where on Leopard it appears it wants to create the shares under /Volumes/ServerName/Folder. Granted, at present the original server's Home Folders are on a fiber attached raid and in testing I don't have this available. Any suggestions on a way to test easily without moving the raid? Also, is there an easy way to do a mass change on user machines where if I move my raid over to the new server, I can make sure that users data is being backed up to the proper location?
Sorry for the lengthy post, just trying to make sure I'm covering all my bases, heh.

Antonio, thanks for the response. I do have one more question regarding this. On the client side, the mirrors.plist file references the old server FQDN and share name. Because this will be being moved over to the new server, is there an easy method to update the clients mirror plist without breaking the PHD mirror? My big concern here is that either the users will not be able to synchronize phd's or we will have to re-establish all the phd's from the client machines to the server. My thought here is simply using a cname to direct any traffic still trying to hit the old server name to the new server name.

  • Raid Storage Device

    Hello all,
I have been having some performance issues with a raid enclosure and Im hoping some here might be able help me out. I had this raid system connected to a Windows 2003 server for a couple of months and had been seeing write speeds at around 160MBps writes and Reads at about 175MBps with the NTFS file system. Last week I moved the raid enclosure over to my SunBlade 150 formatted the drives for UFS, ran some performance numbers and the result were 38 write and 32 read. I at a loss here as to why the difference is so huge any suggestions?
    Thanks In Advance

  • Usb3 drive disconnecting all the time at a usb 3 port on my macbook pro

i just bought the new macbook pro 13 inch and i was into some point tricked because the salesman from apple assured me that the laptop would be shipped with mountain lion and i could do the upgrade for free for maverick. so when i recieved the computer i found out that it actually came with maverick intalled and after talking to an apple customer support he said i could not go back to mountain lion. so most of my software are damaged according to the new system and it simply doesnt let me open many apps i just installed.
so now i have another bigger problem. everythime i connect a usb 3 HD into my new macbook, the HD gets disconnected. i used already 3 diferent drives and tried at least 3 diferent cables but the problem persists. Note that it never happenned with a usb2 port. is anyone having the same problem?
at this point i am pretty upset with the company alltogether. i had purchased at least 30 macs and i never had any sort of problems till now.

I just got a new IMAC and experienced the same issue with a RAID 10 array with 4 drives spontaneously disconnecting in the middle of a data transfer with the message "you should eject disk properly, etc. etc." message.
As many others I tried all the obvious solutions. Different cables, different drives, etc. Then I read something about radio wave interference from wireless keyboards. Well, I don't have wireless keyboards or mice (don't like them) but still, it stuck in the back of my mind.
I did find that a USB 2.0 cable with noise suppression dongles at each end worked just fine, if a bit slowly. Anyway, I found an old set of ferrite couplings that were made for video cables back in the day and placed one set at each end of the USB 3 cable. I then moved my RAID array as far from the computer as possible and plugged it all back in. The problem has not reoccurred even with the transfer of very large folders of files from a networked PC RAID.
Just a thought but it seems to have worked for me although the fact that this sort of thing is necessary does not speak well for Apple.

  • UEFI information...

I made a recent post about how to disable the onboard RAID300 on my RD430. And there was an answer. But after 20 or more frustrating hours later, two things are very apparent:
    1) There is no "bios" documentation.
    2) Lenovo's implementation of UEFI and the "Bios setup" need explaining; specifically, the interaction between various options which can cause my GPT UEFI option to not work anymore.
Much like this thread, I want all UEFI and no legacy. Or at least something that clearly explains why I can't boot my RD430 from any of the boot options, legacy or efi when things go wrong, like changing one setting in bios to enable the disabling of the scu.
What I have found with my RD430 is that if I do anything to disturb the bios or make any hardware changes which disrupt the ordering of the disks, my server won't boot. Combine that with my lack of understanding of the interaction of UEFI and the rest of the system and I'm questioning my investment in a proper server.
My Google-fu did help me stumble upon this amazing Lenovo document, which is the singularly most helpful explanation of UEFI I have found on the internet. Why? Because it provides usage examples.
To those who read and might know:
I read about a USB UEFI diagnostics utility; can it fix the boot variables in NVRAM when I do something that makes my RD430 not boot?
I had to reinstall the OS after I took the advice on disabling the patsburg scu to turn of the raid 300. Now I moved the raid card to the other free PCIe 3.0 slot and am trying to use a live CD to re-write the nvram variables. I documented the process, so in the unlikely event it is a successful recovery, I can post the details. My full expectation is the need to reinstall the OS again...
    Thanks,
    Chris

I found a great way to actually SEE what is in the UEFI boot table is to boot a linux live CD in UEFI: mode and then modprobe efivars then efibootmgr -v to see the results. This post helped me recover my lost OS.
It would be fantastic if Lenovo (or someone) could come up with a bootx64.efi that enables the user to easily map the boot table entries in the UEFI nvram! The program could scan the drives and partitions for valid EFI/xxxx/ffffx64.efi entries, show them in a table, and let the user alter them. It should show something of a PCI drive layout, which partition, and the files' paths. Labels would be nice, but I'm not going to be greedy.
The bios' uefi boot menu has bugs and it definitely does not scan entries accuracy.

  • What to do with our Xserve RAID, moving forward - Need Advice.

We have an 3.5 TB Xserve RAID (14 drives - 250 GB each, split into two 7-drive volumes). As many others have, we've moved into more HD and tapeless workflow. The Xserver RAID was purchased really for one HD project with DVCPRO HD back in 2004 and hasn't really been used since except for backup storage.
I'd really like to move us into a SAN system, but am curious about others' perspectives on populating our Xserve RAID with 1 TB or greater drives now or get a different RAID setup. We've moved to Mac Pros, but the Xserve RAID is still dedicated to just one G5. I am doing some reading on setups such as the EVO and CalDigit, but haven't setup a SAN. It's time though.
We have three post machines - two editorial and one sound station. I could really use some insight on how to use our setup in a SAN scenario or what's the cheapest way we can get into a SAN workflow. Granted, drives are cheap these days, but it's so inefficient copying data between two machines to make sure we have a copy of the same media.
    Thanks for any input folks.

+I'd really like to move us into a SAN system, but am curious about others' perspectives on populating our Xserve RAID with 1 TB or greater drives now or get a different RAID setup.+
I'll start with the fact that 750GB are the absolute max you'll be able to put into the Xserve RAID. Compatible 750 PATAs are really hard to find (and are expensive when you can find them) so that avenue makes little sense. I think you should really be thinking in terms of new hardware at this point. I know several people who run XSAN and are much happier with the Promise RAIDs they have now over the older Xserve RAIDs.
Which hardware and SAN software you should be looking at I'll leave up to someone with more modern experience in the video editing realm- I've been out of it for too many years now.

  • Xserve Raid - moving raid set from one Xserve Raid to another Xserve Raid.

I have 2 raids, and one will be moving to another building. Can I take one raid set out of unit 1 and place it into unit 2 without losing the data that is on it?

You shouldn't loose the data, but you may have to use the RAID utilities to recognize the set, once it is in the the other XRAID box.
As always, you should backup, in any event, if you have the space.

  • Moving boot disk to raid 0

    Hi Guys,
I have the following volumes on my MacPro
    1. Boot Disk - 465.3 GB, 200GB used
    2. Raid 0 volume - 436.2 GB
How easy is it for me to move the boot disk data to the raid 0 volume and then boot from the raid 0 partition.
Also I have heard that if you have a raid 0 boot disk that the firmware updates can fail, is this still true.
    Thanks for any help
    Andy

Quicken Data files are actually packages, which can contain alias to the volume. Once I stripped the aliases from the data file, no problems, but for the longest time (years) everytime I cloned and used a different volume I'd run into trouble.
LittleSnitch hard codes the volume name, but also WHERE on the volume, an application is located. Very annoying.
So it may be plist or preference, but it could also be writing an alias to data file, or even back to the application package itself.
You would think at some point during testing especially, a light bulb would go off and realize there is a better way to code (unless it really is deliberate and trying to tie a program to only a single volume type system, which the Mac doesn't need to be).
Feedback the vendor. However, unless you do a lot of moving stuff around (like during testing) it is a "once only" event. If you name the new RAID boot volume with same name, might not even matter.
I do a lot of backup and restores during the course of a week, SuperDuper works well, not 200% perfect maybe, but works.
I keep my boot volume, though, free of my home account. That resides on another volume and can last for years. The boot volume gets changed more often. And I think having "home account" (but not /Users) not be on the boot drive makes it easy and avoids some of these problems even.

Overclocking and RAID, do they mix???

What board do you have?  It makes a difference in this case.  For example, the Via K8T800 based boards do not have PCI/AGP locks, so raising the FSB overclocks all the other components as well, including the HDD controller, and it has been observed that for these boards, RAID arrays will become unstable at FSB settings above about 225 MHz, at most, so overclocking and RAID do not really gotogether on these boards.  The nforce3 based boards, on the other hand, should have PCI/AGP locks, though I think (but I'm not sure) that you have to explicitly enable them in BIOS, and I've seen some threads questioning whether or not they actually work, so again the board might have problems with high FSB settings, although I'm pretty sure an nforce3 board would have a working lock and thus be able to overclock with a RAID array defined.  Finally, if you have a nforce4 based board, it should definately have a functional lock on it, and it should handle the RAID just fine when overclocking.
