Moving To Specific Photos In PSE 10 Organizer

When I am in PSE 10 Organizer looking at a particular photo and I want to look for and access another photo I scroll into a view that has a number of photos visible at one time on my screen. I double click on the next photo I want to deal with and voila! It takes me back to the previous photo I was working on. I then try the same process over again and the second time it usually works. Why is this? Is there a bug in the program? Is there are way of accessing a fix. It is very annoying.

Hi,
There's no such bug. I mean navigation between files is the most operation one would do, how can that be buggy
You can double click an image to view it in Single Image View and use keyboard arrow keys to navigate left/right/up/down. Also double clicking an image which is fully zoomed out takes you back to previous zoom-in state where all thumbnails were visible.
You may also  try other views to arrange you media in grid - Thumbnails, Import Batch, Date View, Folder Location. These are available in 'Display' dropdown present on the top right corner of the application.
Thanks

  • Ideas to Improve Tagging of photos in PSE Organizer

I've been using PSE since V2 and recently upgraded from PSE 11 to PSE 13. While PSE is solid and has some nice new features, it's apparent after some use that my hopes that manual face tagging would be greatly improved were not realized.  I take some responsibility for this as I've grumbled about the unnecessary steps and lack of features in this area and have been silent.  So, I have some suggestions which would be really, really nice to see in an update to the Photoshop Elements Organizer.
The thrust of this posting is to improve manual tagging of pictures:  Steps one does to augment tagging after "Add People" and "Add Places" has been used.
Please let me know what you think of this list and I'll submit a revised version as a development suggestion.  Which ideas are good?  workable?  Which ones are half baked?  Have I missed features that already exist so these suggestions are unnecessary?
    Recently Used tags:
When tagging a set of pictures it is highly likely to reuse tags across many pictures.
If the tags are from many areas in the tag group structure it requires opening and closing parts of the group tree to access the tags.  This is arduous if one has a large number of tags.
Recommend providing a "Recently Used Tags" in the list of tag sections below Keywords, People, Places, and Events.
Recently used tags should provide a lot of tags in Most Recently Used order - 100 at a minimum.  Tagging weddings and other group events involve using a lot of tags.
Recently used tags should include all types of tags - people, places, events, etc.
This approach would be beneficial when PSE fails to find faces as well as when non-face tags need to be applied to pictures.
    Favorite tags:
Add a "Favorites" tag structure along with People, Places, Events, and Recently Used from above.
Allow tags to be assigned to favorites by selecting a tag and right click "Add to Favorites".
Allow tags in Favorites to be reordered by dragging up and down in the list.
Allow tags to be removed from Favorites by selecting the tag with right click "Remove from Favorites".
Adding face tags for faces that were not found (no box on the face) requires way too many steps for a picture selected in the organizer (seven steps).  Today one must:
    Press "Mark Face" button.
Drag rectangle placed in upper left to a face.
    Size rectangle to the face.
Click in name area below rectangle.
    Type beginning of name.
    Select name from list
Click green check to confirm selected name.
First suggested alternative for face tagging (3 steps):
Right (or left) click and drag to create rectangle on face - Organizer recognizes this operation and marks face and opens name box below.
Type beginning of name in name box.
Select name from list.  When name is selected it is confirmed - no green check to confirm selected name.  In the unlikely event one incorrectly selects a name it can always be corrected or the face box removed.
Second suggested approach to quick face tagging:
Open one Tags/Info and expand one of the tag structures: People, Places, Events, Recently Used tags, or Favorites and navigate to a tag.
Drag a tag (that is a person) into a unassigned facial recognition box.  This completes the face tag.
If no box exists for a face, right click and drag a tag to a face.  The default sized square is created on center of release point at end of drag and the tag is assigned to the face.  Allow the user to resize the square to margins of face and hit enter to complete tag.  Using right click for this process differentiates a new face tag from the standard left click which assigns the tag to the photo or an empty face tag box.
This approach requires one or two steps per tag unless the tag needs to be located in the tag strucure.
    Other photo tagging issues:
Do not suggest a person for a face tag if they are already face tagged on the picture as they probably aren't in two places on the same picture.
When clicking on a blank name for an empty face tag PSE provides a list of names that is barely wide enough for 3 names.  A larger list of suggested names should be provided - it could extend beyond the entry area for the name and below it.  If face recognition does find a good match PSE should include in the list any people tags which are assigned to the photo but have not been tagged to a face.  Anyone having used PSE for a long period of time likely has many pictures which are tagged with people but are not face tagged.  This approach would reduce the effort in selecting a person.
Sometimes a lot of non-faces are detected in a picture.  Removing these boxes requires separate clicks on each box's 'X'.   Suggest a context menu on the photo, 'Remove unused face tags' to clear them' in one step.
I'd appreciate all ideas and suggestions.  In advance, thanks!

You should see it bottom left of Organizer.

  • Why can't I download photos from my harddrive in PSE Organizer 8?

I've tried 3 different times to download my photos in PSE Organizer 8 from my harddrive.  Each time I tried a smaller group.  I just upgraded from Elements 4 and I was impressed with some of the features with the organizer and decided to try and use it.  I have all my photos organized in folders and sub folders.  According to the help information, I should be able to just tell it to download all my photos, including sub folders and once downloaded, I can click on folders view (can't quite remember exactly what it's called) and I will find all my photos organized the same way.  I have Windows XP.  I do have a large amount of photos.  The first try included all of them for a total of 11,644, but part of these are .pub and .doc files which cannot be download.  The last try was 8,843 photos which, again included files that cannot be downloaded.  I was really hoping to download my pictures in an already organized way.  Is this possible?  Is it that it just can't handle downloading that many at a time, or could it be some other problem?

What do you see that tells you the photos didn't import into the Organizer? Do you get an error message? Does the Organizer appear to be empty when you finish importing?
More importantly, this is not the correct process when moving from PSE4 to PSE8. You need to convert your PSE4 catalog. To do this, open PSE8 and select File->Catalog->Convert.
My advice is to forget importing existing photos into the Organizer, and convert the catalog as described above.

  • How do PSE Organizer import photo tags? not found

After importing all my picture to one catalogue in the organizer of PSE 9 for Mac, I recognize that my photo tags which were set in Lightroom and save in the photos are not available in the oragnizer.
Even I am not able to find those tags or can use my tags for filtering.
Is there a switch inside PSE to activate my tags or what ever.
    Thanks for your help!

Did Lightroom write the tags to the photo files? Lightroom doesn't do that automatically, you have to turn on an option in Lightroom.
Which brings up a 2nd point. Why do you want to use two different "organizers", one in PSE and one in Lightroom. This seems to me to be pointless ... extra work, no benefit.
If I had to pick one "organizer", I would simply use the Lightroom Library Module. It doesn't make sense to me to pick the PSE Organizer in this case.

  • All of my photos have disappeared from PSE Organizer 13 (after I upgraded it).

All of my photos have disappeared from PSE Organizer 13 (after I upgraded it).  The files are all on the HD.  When I try and reimport them, Organizer says they are already in there and will not allow me to proceed.  When I highlight a keyword, Get the message  "NO MEDIA TO BE DISPLAYED".  Perhaps I am dense, but I find the Search function of the Forum to be near useless, unless I just happen to type the Exact name of a topic.
I now have no access to perhaps 35,000 files from 12 years of using PSE!

Which operating system are you running on?   Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
Which version did you upgrade from?  updated from PSE 13 to PSE 13.1
In the organizer, which view are you using - in the View menu is Details checked or unchecked - does it make any difference?  was unchecked now checked.  Now can see the other files, but the Keyword tags that I had attached in the past does not bring up the selected frames.
In the View menu, select Media types - are all checked?  At this point I have only Ohotos and videos checked
In View menu, select Hidden Files - is Show All Files checked?  yes
I'm assuming that you are in Media view, what happens if you select People Places or Events?  get groupings of files with those keywords.

  • Trouble "getting" photos in PSE 8 Organizer

I'm trying to bring photos into PSE 8 Organizer. I've used PSE 5 and 6 with no problem. Now I've upgraded my computer to a new, 64-bit Windows 7 computer (Dell Inspiron), and a new PSE 8. I've imported my PSE 6 catalog with, apparently, no trouble.
Now when I try to get new files, I can't select them in the "Get Photos and Videos" window. I can see the files I want, but when I try to click to select them, they either won't select at all, or they select the folder above or below the one I want, or they select a different folder and show a duplicate of the same folder, or the folder I want disappears.
It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen!
    Any ideas what's happening???

Hmm, haven't heard of those symptoms before.
As a workaround, try dragging individual files, selections of multiple files, or entire folders into the Organizer.  Does importing them that way work?

You need to spend some time with Help> Getting Started. You can create many categories and sub-categories in your tags, the Organizer fixes you refer to are still there - click Instant Fix at bottom right, and if you convert your existing catalog then all those existing tags will come across with them (although People, Places & Events are handled differently from 8 & 9. And you don't have to store anything in the cloud if you don't want to.

  • PSE organizer v8.0 - crashes when backing up the catalog

I open the organizer, select File, then select Back-up catalog, and the pop-up window for 'Step 1 Backupp Options' appears; I select Full Backup, and then I select Next.....and crash.  Program closes and a 'Crash Report for "Elements Organizer"' screen appears...saying a crash report has been generated (which I did send).  Sadly this is the first attempt at backing up the catalog - 16G worth of data based on the My Pictures folder size.  HELP !!!  I really don't want to loose all my efforts associated with tags and organizing.

Summary/update:  I'm moving my photos and catalog from a Win XP to Win 7 computer, both which have PSE8.0.  Back-up wouldn't work on the old, XP, computer...kept crashing Photoshop Organizer.  So I moved all the photos and the entire catalog folder (as found in /help/system info) to my new computer.
Now I'm not sure if this is a recommended method, but I replaced on the new computer the Catalog folder contents with the Catalog folder contents from the old computer.  I then opened Organizer with fingers crossed.  My photos were there.  And my tags were there.....the most important thing I wanted to transfer.  But none of the photos when selected where 'found'.  So I had to go through the somewhat painful process of reconnecting my picture folders.  See  (www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm) (specifically, Quickly reconnecting large numbers of photos (PSE 6,7,8).  I never got the 'Reconnect an entire folder tree all at once' method to work unfortunately.
I thought I was done.  BUT, a LARGE chunk of photos have the wrong dates associated with them.  I have 4700 photos.
QUESTION:  Is there an easy to fix the dates (and not one at a time).  And why would all be good but the dates.  Meaning, photos are there, tags there, but dates wrong on some photos but not on others.   And that's the frustrating part, I have to one by one, practicially, search for photos having a wrong date.
    Frustrating

  • Quickly reconnecting large numbers of photos in PSE 6 and 7

[This is a significant revision of my message posted here on 2/8/2008 and in the Photoshop Elements 6.0 FAQ forum on 2/9/2008. It is split across two messages.]
    Part I of II
When you move photos from one location to another using Windows Explorer or some other tool outside of the Organizer, PSE reports those files as missing, and a question mark appears on the thumbnails in the Organizer. The File > Reconnect command can reconnect those files with their new location, but it can be very slow and sometimes only connects a few files at a time.
Its always best to move files and folders using the Organizer, avoiding the need to reconnect. But if youve already moved those files, here are some ways of coping in PSE 6 and 7:
    1. Move the files back to their original location using Windows Explorer. Then use the Organizers Display > Folder Location view or the File > Move command to move the files to the desired new location. In the left-hand folder pane of Folder Location view, you can drag and drop folders, just like in Windows Explorer (this isnt documented in the Help).
Since the File > Move command moves files to a single destination folder, its not that useful for working with more than one folder. The PSE 6 Move command also has a serious bug if you move a file to a folder that already has a file of the same name, the destination file gets permanently deleted. (Thats fixed in PSE 7.)
    2. Reconnect an entire folder all at once. If you cant or dont want to use the first method, you can use File > Reconnect > All Missing to reconnect more than one file at a time.
Its not immediately obvious, but the Reconnect > All Missing window can reconnect an entire folder of files all at once. On the left-hand side, under Files Missing from Catalog, click Select All. On the right side, under Locate the Missing Files, browse to the folder containing the files. A thumbnail of one of the files should be displayed. Click Reconnect, and all the files in the folder will be reconnected. If there are files in other folders remaining to be connected, theyll still be displayed on the left, and you can repeat the process.
    3. Reconnect an entire folder tree all at once. If youve moved an entire tree of folders and theyre now disconnected, you can persuade PSE to reconnect them all quickly.
    a. In Edit > Preferences > Files, select the option Automatically Search For And Reconnect Missing Files.
    b. Do File > Reconnect > Missing File to reconnect one file manually.
    c. Do File > Reconnect > All Missing. PSE will start searching near the folder containing the missing file you reconnected in step b, and it will usually find all the missing files within a couple of minutes of searching.
    d. If step c doesnt find all the missing files, or youre impatient, you can explicitly tell PSE where to search:
]i. Do Help > System Info and write down the folder location of your catalog.
    ]ii. Exit PSE.
]iii. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the catalog folder.
]iv. Open the file rmf.3.cache in Notepad. This file was created in step b above. It contains the most recent folders in which you reconnected files (rmf = reconnected media folders), and the Reconnect command always searches these folders first before scanning the rest of your drives.
]v. Delete all of the contents of the file and add a single line containing the full path of root of the folder tree containing your photos. For example, if you moved the folder tree to E:\data\photos, add that as a single line to the file.
    ]vi. Save the file.
]vii. Restart PSE and do File > Reconnect All Missing again. It should first search the folder tree you provided in step v.

<i>Part II of II</i><br /><br /><b>4. Reconnect folders residing on a network drive.</b> If youve moved folders that originally resided on one network drive to another network drive, the Organizer will treat them as offline rather than missing, and it will show a red circle with a vertical line in the corner of the thumbnails.   An offline file is one that might show up later on, such as when you reconnect your laptop to the network containing your file server or you insert a DVD containing your archived photos.<br /><br />Since the moved files are offline, the PSE 6 Reconnect All Missing command wont do anything but tell you there are no files to reconnect.  You can force PSE to reconnect many offline files at once:<br /><br />a. Select all the photos that are offline.<br /><br />b. Do File > Write Keyword Tag and Properties Info.<br /><br />c. In the Find Offline Volumes window that pops up, select Reconnect and click OK.<br /><br />Unfortunately, method 3 doesnt appear to work with offline files on a network drive.  If you have a large number of individual folders and dont have the patience to reconnect each folder in turn, you can either use method 1 (restore the files to their original location) or recreate the original UNC name for the network drive (e.g. \\mycomputer\share).  (You could also try editing the catalog file using the tool sqlite3  search these forums for how to do it.  But thats sketchy at best.) <br /><br />------------------------------------<br />If you reconnect a file and get the message <old file> was not connected to <new file> or The file already exists in the catalog, then youve stumbled over a PSE bug for which there are workarounds.   See this thread:<br /><br /><a href="/webx?14@@.59b66777/5">John Rolfe Ellis, "Cannot Reconnect; File already exists" #6, 17 Sep 2008 2:49 pm</a><br /><br />------------------------------------<br />I havent tested any this in PSE 5, so I cant say how much works the same way.

  • Archiving Photos in PSE 7

I am trying to clear up space on my hard drive, so I'm interested in archiving photos by using the "Copy/Move Offline" feature. I no longer want to have full versions on my hard drive, just the thumbnail references, and I'm hoping to minimize the difficulty in accessing the full versions when I upgrade the software. I have a couple of ideas/issues to figure out and would appreciate some help:
    1. One option is archive to a DVD--my issue is that I use a specific folder structure on my harddrive (i.e. Year>Quarter = 2007>JAN-MAR), and I'm not sure how to create that on a DVD (or if its necessary). Do I need to use a read/write DVD in order to create my structure ahead of time, then "move offline" the files in sections? Would I still need the structure?
    2. Another option is my external harddrive--I tried to "move offline," using the "Copy/Move Offline" feature, the full version photos to the external harddrive, so that I could still have my folder structure. Then I was hoping that I could access the photos in PSE when the harddrive was disconnected, and they would show up as "offline." No such luck. When I went to a photo that should have been "offline," it treated it as a missing link and tried to reconnnect. Anyone know why this is happening? Any other suggestions on how to make it offline on an external harddrive?
*I do also want to mention that I have a full back up on an off-site server, and I plan on burning DVD's with just the photos and sending them to other off-site locations (i.e. family members), so that I don't have all my eggs in one basket, so to speak.

I recommend moving your folder heirarchy to an external hard drive using Display > Folder Location view:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Move_your_photos
I strongly recommend against using File > Copy/Move to Removable Disk.  A fair number of people have reported here that when they used this command in an older version of PSE and then upgraded, their catalog was corrupted.  Most of them were able to recover their photos and tags, but it was very painful.   Adobe customer service was useless -- they even asked one person to mail them a copy of his catalog, and after a coule of months, they said in effect "sorry".    So in my opinion, you'd be foolish to entrust your metadata to Adobe.
Copy/Move To Removable doesn't preserve your folder structure.  It also doesn't make "previews" or "proxies" (large thumbnails) of your images when you move the files to a hard drive rather than optical media, as you've discovered.  (Not clear if that's a "feature" or a "bug".)

  • Import interrupted - now can't import these photos in PSE 8

My import was interrupted and when I now try to import those photos from my disk drive PSE Organizer must think that they are duplicates and won't import those specific photos.  Anyone have a fix?

haveing issue - can see photos in the PSE Organizer thumbnails but cant find the originals on my pc - any help appreciated.

Have you moved the photos recently, perhaps through Explorer?
If you do not know where the pictures are, you could find a filename and do a Search on your hard drive. Once you know where the pictures are, you could do a File>Reconnet Missing and link the thumbnail back to the picture.
The other question would be is there a CD icon in the thumbnails? This would indicate the original photo is stored off-line on a CD or DVD.

I am new to PSE 12 and am trying to import my photos from folders on my desktop which I have organized by the categories I had in my previous program (Creative Memories).  Many of my photos are located in multiple folders, i.e. one photo could be in "Family," Vacations" and "Birthdays."  When I try to import the contents of each folder on my desktop I am often getting the message that many of my photos were not imported as they are already in my catalog.  Is there a way that I can import any one photo multiple times so that it ends up in all the folders I want it to be in?  I know I can locate the photo in PSE and copy it to a different folder(s), but there are so many not being imported that this would be a huge task!

By design, the organizer (and any other database management systems) is there to prevent you from duplicating your media files. The catalog management allows you to have the same image in different categories or albums. Duplication in different folders is to be absolutely avoided.
The same image file can have multiple tags like 'family', 'vacations', 'birthdays' and be present in three different albums with the same names. On obvious advantage is less disk space. Another one with your present folder system is that if you edit one of your duplicates, the other ones are unchanged.
I don't see an easy way to make your present folder structure simplified for the organizer ...
