Moving to Trash

Trying to eject a CD i dragged the icon to the trash and it didn't eject but ever since I have a Trash window open which says "preparing move to trash" and indicates 1 item to be moved. I can't stop it and I can't close the window because the red button isn't live. i've tried rebooting the computer but the window is still there. How do I get rid of it. CD was removed using the eject key on the keyboard.

Hello richard:
You might try a couple of things:
Run permission repair.
Run repair disk (not the same thing) from your software install DVD.

If you are using Apple's Mail app 6.5 is the latest version irrespective of what a previous poster says. It does sound though that you are using a gmail account online via a web browser. Please confirm and fill in missing information.

Getting the message "your mail could not be moved to trash", and keeps reappearing as not read or deleted.

Did you have Hotmail set-up with Android prior?  I did, and if you did too, you have the same problem, and this is how to solve it.
From your desktop computer, the Hotmail (or Outlook) website uses the folder "Deleted" for your deleted messages as default.  On your iPhone, the deleted folder's name by default is "Trash".
When I had my Hotmail with Android, it created a folder Trash for deleted messages, and it's creation was amongst all my folders.  So when you go back and look at Hotmail from your desktop, you will see a folder Trash, in addition to the default Deleted.  My Trash folder had all the emails I deleted from my Android.
That said, with the manual folder Trash that was created, when trying to set-up Hotmail now on iPhone, because I already had a folder Trash, it conflicted with the default "Trash" folder it wanted to created, so it didn't create it, being the reason why you can't delete emails, because it doesn't have the defaulted "Trash" folder to go to.
The solution is to delete the folder "Trash" from your desktop, uninstall Hotmail from your iPhone, and re-install, and it worked, the defaulted "Trash" was then created, alongside the "Sent" and "Junk".

  • Not user error: moving to trash moves to start of import/event

I found another thread here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5523843&#5523843 describing the issue as well, and that user had it "suddenly start working". Well, that's because it's an inconsistent problem, but it DOES happen, very often.
The problem: when reviewing images (for example in 'first double click' mode, where one image at a time is displayed), hit command-delete to send image to trash. Image is sent to trash, but the first image in the current "set" (be it either an event if editing one event, or an entire import, if working on 'last import' set), is then loaded instead of the image following the one you've deleted/moved to trash.
This is incredibly frustrating!! And yes, I've seen it work "correctly" as well, but that's maybe 5% of the time and difficult to reproduce. It seems maybe the difference is that if you directly double-click on an image, and then move THAT one to the trash, it moves properly, but that if you do some other sequence (not sure what), it doesn't. I can't reliably reproduce it, but it absolutely happens and is super frustrating.
Apple engineers, please dig a bit. Is there a case where it wraps to the first image in the 'working set' after move-to-trash because it's lost order state or something? Please fix!

One more bit of info to help track down the bug: it seems to happen especially in edit mode. You know, with the thumbnail strip along the top? It pretty much ALWAYS happens in that navigation mode.

    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper 2.0.1
        2. AppDelete 3.2.6
        3. Automaton 1.50
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner 2.1.0
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash 1.8.2
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller 1.15.1
      10. Spring Cleaning 11.0.1

  • Downloads folder moved to trash.

My downloads folder was moved to trash and now my Macbook is frozen.

    1. Move the file to a folder not in the trash bin
    2. Open the file with preview
    3. Once open click edit, then delete. This will ask you to convert the file into a .png file. click convert.
    4. Move the new converted sync.png to the trash then empty the trash bin.
    It worked for me.

Which trash are you talking about, Aperture or system?
The command to get images out of the Aperture trash is Put Back. You select the images, right click and select Put Back from the contextual menu.
Same procedure for the projects. Select the project in the Trash right click and select Put Back.

  • When I delete emails , they just get deleted and do not get moved to trash

When I delete an email , it just gets deleted and does not get moved to trash. Its pretty frustrating as I regularly hit the delete by mistake and I lose the email because it just does not get moved to trash .I have checked the preference to find some setting that might cause this ( like delete trash immediately) in mail preferences to no avail. I also have ran file system check and cleaned and repaired the Mac-HD in hope of solving the problem to no avail. This has been happening only for a few days. The funny thing is , I also noticed that a folder I was trying to copy from My main HD to a secondary one ( not in mail but just on the computer), suddenly disappeared and I could not locate it . Am I going crazy? Someone please help.

    Hi hadjibaba. You’re welcome.
Report the names of the files and folders present at the first level of the ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/ account folder in the Finder.
In order to post the exact file names and avoid typing mistakes, proceed as follows. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/. With that folder open, if you’re looking at it in View > as List mode, first collapse any expanded folders so that the Finder only shows the files and folders at the first level. Now, do Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C), and paste it in your reply to this post.
BTW, if you’re running Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther), as your profile indicates, it would have been more appropriate to discuss this in the Mail & Address Book - Mac OS X 10.3 & earlier forum. If the discussion applies to both Mail 1.x and Mail 2.x, it doesn’t really matter, but it’s difficult to know that in advance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Files moved to trash then stopped are stuck in the process of stopping. Can't escape, or stop the process..how can I stop it?

Files moved to trash. Then I stopped the move. Now they are "stuck" in the process of "stopping" hitting escape does not work. How do I resolve this and either stop the move, or complete it? At this point, I just want the process to end.

Thanks for your response!  Unfortunately, this did not work, but it was worth a try. The computer would not allow me to shut it down with a process still running...

  • 16:9 Aspect Ratio reverts to 4:3 when rejected clips are moved to trash.

Mini DV Tape imported to an event with Aspect Ratio Preference set to 16:9.  Parts of some clips marked as rejected.  When rejected clips are moved to trash the aspect ratio of both the Event and the Project revert to 4:3.

This has always worked for me:
FCP: File Export QTMovie... current settings.
COMPRESSOR: 16:9 High Quality 90 minute (choose ac3 for your audio in here)
Then, in DVDSP make sure the setting is correct in the above window.
Also - check your preview (forgot what it's called)you can change it to widescreen also. Dbl check there that indeed all is good.
Then, as said above also - run it on DVDPlayer in your applications folder. Don't watch it FULL screen, watch it as a window in your finder. There you'll get a read on EXACTLY what the dvd is sending... if you see a 4:3 window with letterboxing something is wrong. You should (SHOULD) see a 16:9 window with no distortion or letterboxing.
Once you determine that, the issue will be your setup of DVD player and TV.

I finished my project and have it on DVD and Bluray. Now I want to free up disk space by deleting everything that had to do with the project including event clips.  Does 'moving to trash' accomplish that?

    Hi eneighbor
Yes, selecting "move to trash" from within FCPX will free up disk space.
I "Move Project To Trash" first.
Then "Move Event To Trash" secondly.
To totally free up disk space, you will of course need to empty out your trash as you would per any other unwanted file you've sent to the trash can.

  • Reinstall applications after deleting by moving into trash.

I have deleted my adobe applications by moving into trash before installing an SSD drive into my Mac and migrating my account over. Unfortunately the application manager doesn't seem to realise that the apps are gone and are not letting me reinstall them, any suggestions?

I will suggest to uninstall the applcaition from:
Main hard drive -> Applications -> Utilities -> Adobe Installer -> (uninstall then programm by double clicking the uninstaller).

  • Mail keeps crashing after SL install, even after Mail folder moved to trash

I have also just upgraded to 10.6 and Mail crashes every time on launch. In my case, even moving the Mail folder in Library to trash has not worked. Every time I do this Mail regenerates the folder with all the old information, which I suspect is where the problem lies: I have tried Mail with a new user and it works.
How do I delete the Mail account completely (I cannot open Mail) to try and start from scratch?
Note: I already had a functional exchange account set up before the upgrade to SL, and left it there during the upgrade. Might Mail be crashing now because it is trying to use the previous settings?
