Moving Toward Flat Networks

What exactly is meant by a flat network? Please read on before you give a quick answer.
I have some definite ideas, but I would love to hear other people's inputs, ideas and perceptions.
The   trend in the data center is to go in the direction of flat networks,  which to me means  that the multi-tiered architectural model can be  collapsed into 2  layers. Juniper says they will collapse the data  center into one tier:  the Stratus project promises the equivalent of  one gigantic logical  switch.
So, the implication is that there will be a flattening of the network in 2 ways: first, in terms of physical layers of networking and secondly, in terms of creating one logical L2   domain that is horizontally expanded (across data centers, too), but   the redesigned L2 domain will not require STP, blocked uplinks, or   unknown unicast flooding.
I do require some clarification:
1.)   How exactly can the access and aggregation layers be flattened? If,  for  example, one can stack all the top of rack (accesss layer) switches  to  create a single virtual chassis and then do the same, or something  similar, like VSS, to the aggregation  layer, the result is that each  layer will see the other layer as one  switch. So, 10 access switches  will look like 1 switch to the  aggregation layer, and 2 aggregation  layer switches will look like 1  switch to the access layer. This will  allow one to create multi-chassis  etherchannels that can expand the  network horizontally, HOWEVER, there  are still 2 layers of networking.
Does this make sense?
2.)   The value in spanning L2 domains across data centers in a  services-oriented architecture is clear. It facilitates vMotion and  vStorage and creates clusters of compute and  storage resources, which  can be leveraged for SAN replication, disaster  recovery, cloud  computing (IT/Software as a Service), and running active/active  application services).
But  does  flattening the network mean that there will be one massive subnet  that  will be considered one broadcast domain? Albeit, unicast flooding  and  ARPs will have to be re-engineered to operate in this environment.  This doesn't seem likely.
Any   thoughts?
Thanks

There are as many ways to skin the cat as you can dream up.
But clearly you cannot expect to change roles completely and have everything stay the same.. although the Mac should not need to start over.. TM should be able to have multiple setups where it recognises the different network layouts.. at least with ML it can do that. If you are using SL as per your profile.. no.. it has to be manually setup.
The first obvious solution is this.
Network B: Mac connects to LAN via a non-Apple wi-fi router; TC connects to Mac via ethernet cable
Do the same in network A.. Use the Mac by wireless for internet.. and backups to the TC connected directly by ethernet. Do not plug the TC into the network.
A variation on this.
You can even do it by ethernet.. simply have a switch and plug in both Mac and TC.. but use the TC on a different IP address. You can set statically double IP on the one ethernet port.
Even better plug in a USB drive and use that.. it will be faster, more stable, and more reliable for backups than the TC. Leave the TC in network A.

AS stated the middle of the right side monitor screen is moving toward the middle. Does anyone has a solution. It started this process about five days ago. Thanks.

try testing with any an other monitor in order to under stand the problem, If it works fine that mean you need to contact Monitor manufacturing / support center to check the problem and get repair. you may also check the manual of that monitor if you bought
new one and it comes with new pack.
I am sure you will get some solutions, if you problem still persists that means you can need to check resolution and monitor  in control or try safe mode etc.

  • Moving PC/flat panels/laptops to an inventory acct in SAP

    Hello Experts,
How would you configure SAP to have a specific inventory account to handle PC's / Laptops / Flat Panels? I need help on this one. I a new to SAP. Thanks.

    Hi Rames,
Go to MM03 see the valuation classes for Moving PC/flat panels/laptops.
Note down all the valuation classes. Dont use this valuation class for others.
If they are not yet created now create all materials with a single valuation classes.
Now go to OBYC, give your chart of accounts, Select & double click BSX, give a G/L Account corresponding to that valuation class.
    Reward if it helps.

  • Converting Flat network to VLAN

Ok here is what I would recommend. You have your vlans setup, and the L3 mode set in the SG300 right? If so you will specify an IP address for the L3 router's interface on each vlan. For the sake of discussion lets say you have your business lan on VLAN 1, your guest network on vlan 100, and your servers on vlan 200 Your subnets are 172.16.1.0/24 for vlan 1, 172.16.100.0/24 for vlan 100 and 172.16.200.0/24 for vlan 200.The router's L3 interfaces will be 172.16.1.2 for vlan 1, 172.16.100.1 for vlan 100 and 172.16.200.1 for vlan 200.
[Sidebar] There are a couple of things I want to point out here. Your vlan ID can be any number between 1 and 4095. I will typically setup the vlan ID to match the 2nd or 3rd octet in the IP address. That makes the vlan to ip address human identifiable. The computers or switches don't care, but from a...

This is my first post after having read a lot and making little to no progress.I'm the SysAdmin at a small school and we are growing. My flat network is running out of IP addresses. So, given my limited budget, I switched my network backbone to a SG300-52 and am looking to VLAN setup my environment. I want to use Layer 3 switching and port by port VLAN.I've read several articles about how to do this with the SG300, but I just can't figure it out. I'm Sec+ certified, not CCNA so this is a little out of my league.
Right now my setup is one DHCP server (Win 2008 server) and a FiOS router serving as the gateway. I would like to convert to being able to split my ports to differing subnets and have routing in between them to alleviate my IP address issues. I will still only have one DHCP server (which multiple scopes) and that one gateway. I...

  • Photo Boxes Flipping then moving towards camera - HELP!!!

Im in the middle of a project and my client wants the follow animation:
+An animation seen in many a corporate video and commercial.+
A grid of Image-boxes on the screen, something like 7 images across by 5 images down. Each box has a changing (photo) image then after a time some of the boxes will disappear to start revealing a logo behind it. Then.. the boxes (changing images) will move forward towards the camera (with motion blur) and eventually disappearing to finally reveal the whole logo (which in turn is also moving towards the camera but stops as the last of the image boxes has disappeared off the screen).
Hope this makes some kind of sense?!
Is there a plug in so that that can easily be created? if not, Can someone kindly point me to where there is a step-by-step 'Motion' tutorial for this?
    Many thanks..

The sophistication of your project determines whether or not Neil's tutorial is valid. A video wall-replicator effects can be transformed into your log assembly with a simple dissolve to another project. Similarly, individual replicator tiles can be masked out to reveal the logo.
If I were to approach this project in After Effects, I'd storyboard it out with each of the video wall frames built and rendered out as a separate composition. Bringing them all back into a new project and scaling/position them in 3D space with motion blur and other enhancements.
ONce you begin storyboarding, you can see the amount of work involved. Once you look at the project in terms of hours of work, you can begin to deconstruct the end result and see where you can build in some shortcuts and take some liberties. Once you begin to accept taking liberties as an economic necessity, you can plan them to be hidden by the release medium's inherent limitations.

  • Moving from flat to routed environment

    Hi all,
I have a reasonable sized flat network with approx 100 switches.
We have several sites all connected by dark fiber mostly at 1Gbps, but some at 100Mbps.
Currently the majority of sites connect back to a C3750 switch stack - all sites are on a single subnet.
We want to subnet our network. I see most routers have two 10/100/1000 ports on them. How do I go about connecting say 10 sites to a single router and have each one on a different subnet?
    Many thanks,
    Ben

    Hi Ben
It will be a STAR topology. You must be having a Central location and remote locations.
If you want to use your existing Fiber as backbone then below is the solution.
    The device placement will be
    ======FO======
    ======FO======
Remember that the router will be placed between your Fiber-Optic and switch, hence you need to fo for Fiber-to-thernet convrters.
    (1)Central Location :
    LAN IP = 192.168.1.0/24
    WAN IP = 10.10.10.1/24
    (2)Remote Location 2:
    LAN IP = 192.168.2.0/24
    WAN IP = 10.10.10.2/24
    (2)Remote Location 3:
    LAN IP = 192.168.3.0/24
    WAN IP = 10.10.10.3/24
    and so on.
    Enable RIP on all routers.
This will take care of ur network.
    Any questions?Pls revert back.

  • Access Point configuration for flat network

We have recently aquired a remote location which has a pre-existing flat network (172.16.X.X/16). Before we are able to convert them over to our new IP scheme, they have a need to have wireless connectivity on site. We have 4 1142's which I need to configure for them. I have experience configuring WLC's and autonomous AP's for networks with multiple vlans but have never configured AP's for a flat, single subnet network. I need to configure them for either guest access (internet only) or corporate access to network resources with radius authentication. Do I configure a native vlan as I would for a typical multi vlan network? Do I configure the switch port as an access port as opposed to a trunk beacause of the lack of layer 3? I basically need a sample configuration for this situation.

since you are on flat network, you just need to configure the SSID, no need for subinterfaces.  With the AP only servicing the one VLAN you can leave the port as an access port as well.
as they are on the only subnet, I wouldn't do a 'guest' SSID.  I would go with just the corporate SSID with WPA2/AES/802.1x.  So the config is exactly the same for the RADIUS server and the SSID, but greatly simplified since you don't have to sub-interface anything.

  • Flat network to Multiple VLANs

    Hey,
We have about 30x 2950-T and 10x 3560 switches. I wish to break our flat network into about 10 VLANS using our 3550 as the VTP server and use Trunking between our switches. Do I put all of our switches into one VLAN seperately from our servers/workstations? Or is there a better way?
Also do the 2950T-24 support stacking as most of our switches are all daisy chained. Anyone have a good solution for me to better implement our switches?
    I appreciate your help.
    Cheers.

Its a good idea to have a management VLAN and have all the switches management IPs in that VLAN. Also, you will need a layer 3 switch such as a 3550/3560 to route between your 10 VLANs. The following page should help
    http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/189.html
2950s do support gigastacking. You might want to refer to our best practices document(written for 6500/4500 but you can use it in for other switches too)

  • Moving flat network to VLANs

I have a facility that is currently running a single class C network with a mix of hubs and switches. We are upgrading their infrastructure to be completely switched and implementing VLANS at the same time. I am planning to use a 3560 as the core switched attached to the router and have all the remote switches connected to it. The 3560 will support all my VLAN configuration stuff. I will have a VLAN for the user population, a management VLAN and a VLAN for some of the production machines. I am planning on keeping their existing class C for the user population to avoid have readdressing issues and split up a new address space for the rest.
My question concerns the link between the router and the switch. I am thinking a simple point to point network between the two and then use eigrp between them for routing. I am thinking that I can carve up the new space and have a portion for several point to points and then a portion for my management VLAN and finally a portion for the production machines.
I am used to everything havving its one Class C space just for simplicity but would hate to start that model since what I do here I want to apply to 30 other facilities. I figure this was each facility with be contained within two to four Class C and make the over all management and routing simplier.
Am I on the right track?? Recommendations??

Do you have a specific goal in mind by establishing separate VLANs? If not, it would not appear to harm anything by sticking with a single Class C space (/25 or /26 mask if you don't need it all) and not readdress at all. I would recommend moving to DHCP though. Painful at first but will simplify things (e.g., change management) a lot in the long term.
A single subnet wouldn't even need a dynamic routing protocol between the switch and router - just a static route. In fact - you don't even need to use the switch's routing image. Just let it act as a L2 switch only and set up your routing (again with only a static route - assuming you have only one WAN interface) on the router.
I'm a fan of simplicity - only add/turn on functions where you have a business need or can articulate added value. Especially if you have to do it over and over ("30 other facilities"). Make it so any tech can walk in and grasp what the setup is and how to troubleshoot it.
Hope this helps. Please rate helpful posts.

  • MSI installer closes with error 1327, Invalid drive on Win 7 Ultimate when My Documents is moved to a network drive

I have several computers with Windows 7 Ultimate installed here at the Pioneer Library System. We have ~20 workstations running XP Pro on a Active Directory domain and are planning on rolling out Windows 7 this fall. I am running Windows 7 to test our programs
(have since RC1) but I am running into an issue when installing software.
The problem I am running into is that when I try to install any program that uses the MSI installer on Windows 7 , it fails with a 1327 error at the point where it is preparing to install and says "Invalid Drive H:\".
All the users in our domain have the "Home Folder" on their active directory profile set to
H:\ (which is mapped to \\PrimaryDC\user$ in the same place). We have also moved the
C:\Users\user\Documents folder to H:\ so as to keep all documents on the server where they get backed up regularly.
If I move "Documents" back to C:\Users\user\Documents the MSI installer works fine. When I look into the registry as suggested in
this thread I found that in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders " and in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders " the key "Personal" points to "H:\".
But, H:\ is a valid connected network drive. Installing from the same account on an XP computer with
C:\Documents and Settings\user\My Documents moved to the H:\ drive works fine.
I have tried setting up another 7 machine and get exactly the same results on it.
Is there a workaround for this besides creating a admin account that does not have Documents mapped to the network drive
H:\ to use for installing programs?
    Thanks
    Aaron Z
    PLS

I do not have the option with some of these files to pass parameters to the MSI installer. For example, if I download the Acrobat Reader installer from http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/9.x/9.3/enu/AdbeRdr930_en_US.exe and run AdbeRdr930_en_US.exe
it extracts the MSI file to C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Adobe\Reader 9.3\Setup Files and then runs it.
To reproduce this an a Windows 7 computer (does not have to be on a domain):
    Prep Work:
    Create a user (test1)
Create a folder on the root of C (C:\Test)
Set permissions on C:\Test to allow the test1 user to have full access to it
Share the C:\Test folder as test1 (again, set the permissions to allow the test1 user full access)
Set the "Home Folder" for the test1 user connect to Z: and point that to \\127.0.0.1\test1
    Login as test1
Check that you have Z:\ mapped and that it works
    Check that it works:
Install Acrobat Reader 9.3 from the link above
    Note that it works
Uninstall Acrobat Reader 9.3 using "Programs and Features"
    Break it:
    Login as test1
Check that you have Z:\ mapped and that it works
    Go to C:\Users\test1
Right  click on the Documents folder and click on properties
    Click on the Location tab
Click on "Browse" and select the Z drive
Allow Windows to move the files to the new location
    Check that it is broken:
Check that you have access to the new Documents folder at Z:\
Install Acrobat Reader 9.3 from the link above
Note that it extracts itself to C:\Users\test1\AppData\Local\Adobe\Reader 9.3\Setup Files
and runs the MSI installer from there
Note that after the MSI installer is started it pops up an error saying Error: 1327, Invalid drive Z:\.
I also see this with various other install programs (VMWare vSphere Client, VMWare Player and Kaspersky Antivirus for example)
Is there any reason why this should not work? Is there something that I should be doing differently?
    Thanks

  • ITunes library repair/moving to external network drive

Hello all, I wonder if you can help.  I have searched high and low for a solution to my situation, but to no avail, and so you really are my last hope.  I've been trying to get my iTunes library in order for quite a while and things have gone wrong, and it has really got me down as I'm worried I'm about to have to start again from scratch.  It has taken me about 6 weeks (spread out over the course of a few months) to rip the 18,000 tracks in my library, then another month or so to get all the metadata right, weed out duplicates, etc.  However, the music collection is so big I have had to place it on a network drive in batches (which has the benefit of being able to access it on any laptop at home - but whatever I do iTunes just doesn't like it.
I can't actually bring myself to recount everything I've done as it's a bit upsetting so I thought I might just summarise the situation that I'm now in to see if anyone could help.  I would be very grateful.
I now have a network drive with an iTunes style folder structure within it's music folder, and within that artist/album/song.wav file path.  For reasons I'll explain later I have many MP3s, a few AACs, and *lots* of WAV files - which sadly, don't hold track metadata, otherwise I could have just re-imported all the files into a new iTunes library.  However correct metadata and having the files as WAVs are vital (again, I'll explain later), so it's not something I can change.
I have moved iTunes libraries before when I have moved PCs without any hitches, by moving the music folders and files and doing a search and replace in the library file to point to the new locations.  I thought this would be the same situation.  It's complicated by the fact that I had been hoping to put the music files and library on the network drive so that iTunes on my Mac and PC would be able to access it and write back metadata changes, play counts and so on.
I've not been able to work out how to do this as file paths to the network drive differ on both OS's - Windows paths are more like \\DISKSTATION\Music\ etc etc whereas Mac ones are more like file://localhost/Volumes/Music etc etc
I don't understand networking very well so quickly gave up on the idea of trying to get my library to work off two machines with two OSs (though is someone can explain how/if this is possible, I'd like to try it again).
Now I was left trying to get the library to work with iTunes on either just the Mac or just the PC, and I haven't managed it yet.  When I have been experimenting with amending the file paths in the library and opening it iTunes again I get little WiFi style icons, like the ones you see in the radio section of iTunes - indicating an audio stream - next to every track, and if you click play, it tries to open the track - but doesn't - and keeps trying.  It does this on both machines.  I've tried windows style file paths on the PC, and Mac ones with OSX, I've tried referring to the drive's network IP address and so on - but can't get it to work.  Most of the time it behaves as described above.  Some times it deletes the whole library and starts again from scratch.  At present the file seems to have reverted to the point after I had added all my tracks but before I'd amended the metadata.
(I have a backup of the library file with all the correct data in it, but pointing to files in the wrong places, so I am happy to experiment.)
I've read a lot of threads on similar external drive nightmares people have been having, and it is often mentioned elsewhere to consolidate the files to the iTunes folder once you have told iTunes of the new location, but this wouldn't have been practical - there was over 400gb of them to move over a (relatively) slow network.  And I can't consolidate now with the music files on the network drive as iTunes has all the information in the library, it just seems to not be able to find the files.
So my question is what am I doing wrong and/or how can I fix the library to point to the files in the new location?  It must be possible as I have a version of the XML file with all the artist/album/filename.wav structure intact - it's just getting the bit before it correct and getting iTunes to accept the library once I've amended it.  Is there a way to get my library to recognise the files on the network drive properly - even just on one machine?
I would be happy to start reloading tracks into a new, clean library but there is no metadata WITHIN the wav files like there is in the MP3 and WAVs and so I'll be left with a lot of wavs that aren't titled properly (and I really can't face going back and adding the titles and artists for thousands of tracks again).  Before moving the library I *did* rename the files with artist - track - genre - year etc. etc. information - so if there was a way for iTunes to rebuild the library with information from the filename, I'd be happy to try it.  But even the great Doug's iTunes Scripts website can't even offer anything like that.
To explain the point about the files being all WAVs - the files are going to be used for broadcast and so need to be in the best quality in a format that can be opened - FLAC won't work.  And similarly, the metadata is important as it will be used in a professional situation too.
Any help would be gratefully received as if this doesn't work I seriously think I will stop buying music as I don't want to add to the problem!  I can't face months of ripping everything in again.  I'm so fed up.

Yes it's quite possible, that's how I have mine set up, and Moving iTunes Music will tell you how to go about it.
Pitfalls? Can't really think of any.
    Regards
    TD

  • Moving iTunes to network drive - Seagate or WD

I need to move my 800G iTunes library off my iMac (external USB drive) to a network drive. This is a migration for which I don't have a budget so I am looking for a low-cost solution.
My Gigabit network is fed by a Netgear WNDR3700 router, to which a USB drive can be attached, with ReadyShare software built in to manage it. So I have two options
attach a 2Tb drive to the router - the choices are WD MyBook or Seagate Expansion
ignore that and buy a standalone networked drive - WD MyBook Live
These particular drives are on special offer, which makes them just about affordable!
Option 1 is cheaper. BUT the drive does not support HFS+. So I will have to use it as FAT32 which limits filenames to 32 characters. Which means I will have to rename hundreds of iTunes track names. Some of these are quite complex, such as
Overture in the French Style in B minor, BWV831:10 Gigue.aiff
Option 2 appears to be plug and go - I know of two users who use WD MyBook Live in this way, but it is 30% more expensive
    So: Two questions:
Which option for hard drive is likely to be the most reliable and be fast enough to stream iTunes music to my (wired) Airport Express which feeds my hifi
If I go the router/USB route, what is the easiest way to rename the track filenames?
Complexity means they cannot simply be truncated. So I was thinking of using Better Renamer or similar on an album-by-album basis altho' this breaks the "never edit filenames in the iTunes folder" mantra .But does this matter since I am moving them to a new location which will have to be "recognized" as the new iTunes folder.
    Any and all help appreciated

If you want to make another drive (direct or portable) on your PC the main music location for iTunes, move all song files there, as well as any future imported music from CDs, here is one method (see the links below):
You will maintain your playlists, ratings, comments, etc. This will only move your music folders location, NOT your iTunes program files. It is my opinion that programs (i.e. – iTunes) work better when installed on your main hard drive. At the very least, it makes it easier to manage all your programs if they are centrally located on one hard drive (the Windows default standard).
See these links for some step-by-step info:
iLounge: Moving your iTunes Library to a New Hard Drive
MacMuse: iTfW: Move iTunes music/Library to new drive
iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder
If you are moving the music to an external hard drive or network drive, after the transfer (and to work correctly), the drive must be running prior to your opening iTunes. If not, iTunes will reset the location of your music folder location to the default location (usually: ‘C:\...My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music’). If this happens, you need to manually change the path back to your external location, or future CD ‘Imports’ will be deposited on your internal HD.

  • With the GL demise... are people moving towards open source?

Not a GL expert by any means but I have built several sites that I'm relatively happy with using GL6, this being one of them:
    http://tinyurl.com/ybn8pw
    Yes, it's table based so I realize I'm a dinosaur :)
With the demise of a staple such as GL and the desire not to jump in again so readily on a commercial product... I wonder how many, if any, have moved to something in the open source CMS arena?
I ask because I've been tempted to move to something like WordPress using a magazine based theme as the basis of my site and wonder if others have made this move as well?
As I said, I'm no GL expert... but with a few basic plug-ins and some rudimentary CSS... I've got my site to do a few nice things.
Not looking to stir the pot, just asking with an eye towards the future.
    Thanks

I'm using Wordpress, but not as an alternative. I've set up a few blogs and I'm getting into mucking with the php and css to customise designs - it's fun, but unless you stick to canned templates, you need to know some fairly detailed css and get to grips with yet another coding language in php - you don't need to learn all about it, but enough to get comfortable.
So, another learning curve but it does open up new possibilities. As far as Golive goes, I'll keep using Golive CS2 for the forseeable future, although I'll end up keeping an elderly Mac to run it in the end, along with other older software I don't choose to abandon.

  • Moved Server = No Network

We just installed a new network, and my standalone server moved from a public IP to a private IP NAT'ed by a separate firewall. After booting it up in its new location (with new IP, subnet, gateway, etc.), it has no network connection. I ran the changeip utility as:
    changeip - 216.135.18.xxx 192.168.1.41 File-Server.local Retrospect.local
I still have no network connection. I checked the System Prefs > Network, and it shows the correct settings and says the Ethernet cable is plugged in. My external firewall also acts as an internal DNS server. I created a "retrospect.mydomain.com" entry and pointed it to the private IP for this server.
The ONLY services running on this server are AFP (for simple file sharing) and Open Directory (which I don't even use.)
Any thoughts on further troubleshooting this issue?

As you probably know OS X Server needs a working DNS forward and reverse for it's IP/domain.
I've never come across a firewall that is also a DNS so I don't know what you have there.
    "changeip - 216.135.18.xxx 192.168.1.41 File-Server.local Retrospect.local"

Is: "changeip -checkhostname" reporting no problems?
And I don't know why "everybody" has so little fantasy so they choose "the default" 192.168.1.0/24 for their LAN network. It's OK if you are not going to use VPN, but still...
