Moving trash frozen

I have moved a copied DVD to trash but it was taking hours to move and when I tried to stop the process, now the stopping is taking forever (we are talking days)
It seems like it maybe frozen. The computer will not allow me to shut it down because it says a program is running. How do I get out of this mess?

Thanks Eric, but it will not let me shut it down. Not even with the power button.
I made an appt with the Genius Bar.

    Hello kwamelittle,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing when searching your external drive.  You may need to add your external hard drive to spotlight for indexing.  Use the steps in this article:

  • Moved/Trashed "dyld_shared_cache_rosetta"....now what? (Can I put it back?)

I was using Grand Perspective to see what files were killing all my hard drive space, and I found something called dyldshared_cacherosetta that was big, and deleted it thinking it had something to do with Rosetta Stone, which I had installed a year ago. I've now found that it doesn't have anything to do with that program, and it will not delete from my trash, saying "it's in use".
So I tried moving it back to the folder it came from: HD - Private - Var - DB - DYLD, and I get a message saying the folder can not be modified, but gives me an option to authenticate or cancel.
So what can/should I do with this? Any suggestions?

Have you tried a restart? If the file is in use, by restarting it may recreate it if it's needed in the correct place and then let you empty the trash.

  • Emptying trash frozen

Hi everyone. Have been trying to empty my trash but is frozen, and has been for about the last 24hrs! I know i COULD just shut it down and restart but i also have a external (backup) hard drive connected as well so my question is, do i have any other options? Can't do "Force Quit" as its not in Apple menu. Thank you.

See if you can find a solution here:

Calendar Frozen - Message: Moving calendar to server account....Started 12 hours ago.

Quit Calendar and also the Reminders application, if it's running. Force quit if necessary.
    Back up all data.
In the iCloud preference pane, uncheck the boxes marked Calendars and Reminders. You'll be prompted to confirm that you want to delete your iCloud calendars and reminders from the computer. They'll still be on iCloud.
    Relaunch Calendar and select
    Calendar ▹ Preferences ▹ Accounts
Click the plus-sign button at the bottom of the account list on the left (which may now be empty) to add a new account. Select iCloud and enter your credentials. Your iCloud calendars should appear after a brief delay.
    Do the same with Reminders.

  • Secure trash frozen. (09' MBP running Yosemite)

I am working on a mid 2009 MBP running the latest Yosemite software. I am in the process of securely deleting the trash, however the items to be deleted has not moved in over 5 minutes. The old way running terminal does not work with Yosemite. So, I am starting out with 54 items to be deleted. Is there a better way on doing this? Should it be faster than this? Do you think it's the computer?

Relaunch the Finder, then from the Finder menu bar, select
              Finder ▹ Preferences... ▹ Advanced
    and uncheck the box marked
              Empty Trash securely
Try again to empty the Trash.

  • TRASH AND BURN!

I've got more than 20,000 pix in IPhoto 6 and with everything else am down to my last 10 per cent of disk space. Yikes...
So, I've been brutal for once. And the great hoarder that I am has dumped 6,000 pix into trash thinking I could burn them before removing totally.
Alas, I can't find a way of doing this, other than to reimport them into the main library. In which case, I'd be back to square one after weeks of pruning. This would mean that the pix which are currently ready for the axe being littered all over the place again throughout my library - they don't even seem to come up as 'last import' when returned.
I should, of course, have put them all into a new folder called, say, Burn, done the deed and and then trashed them, but pix in trash won't go to other folders - just back to the main library.
I've also tried moving trash pix into a burn folder and that hasn't worked either.
Any other ideas before I simply self-destruct my 6,000 - by trashing the trash!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I think you've gotten yourself between a rock and a hard spot. I know of now way to get those photos grouped together in the main library directly from the Trash bin. You can't even assign a keyword to them there.
You can, however, drag them from the Trash bin to a folder on the Desktop and then burn them just as jpgs. That would work. But a warning: be sure you drop them into the folder and not miss it and put them all in the Desktop. That can bring the computer to it's knees. Best to open the folder and make it a large target for dragging and dropping.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • I downloaded Lion and my browsers are not showing correctly

I just downloaded Lion. I open up my Firefox Browser and the display is not correct. I went to my Yahoo mail and the
tool bar which always appears is not there and I can't see how to make it appear. All the buttons for deleteting, moving, trash.
Anyone know how to correct the view in Firefox and the Yahoo tool bar thats missing

This Lion ***** big time! I am a big apple user and supporter. This is like installing a windows 93 program no ryme or reaon why it doesn't work and no answers. Nothing that I had prior to installing is working properly. I should not have to go to preference or add-ons and see what I can fix, by the way I did and nothing avails it self to fixing the problem.
If something works great, why change it! If i don't find a quick solution I will be going back to Snow Leopard and can the Cloud.
    Thanks for your help!

  • There is no server available at the address you entered, codes: 25294, 9848

About a month ago I rebooted the server and after that Server Admin hasn't worked. It says always: "There is no Server available at the address you entered".
    In /var/log/system.log:
    Jul 22 11:58:51 mail servermgrd[14205]: SecIdentitySearchCopyNext returned -25294.
Jul 22 11:58:51 mail servermgrd[14205]: Got error -9848 for SSLHandshake
Jul 22 11:58:51 mail servermgrd[14205]: Exception in threadListen: Socket: Connect failed
    From http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Security/Reference/certifkeytrustservic es/Reference/reference.html:
errSecNoSuchKeychain –25294 The keychain does not exist.
    From http://developer.apple.com/documentation/security/Reference/secureTransportRef/R eference/reference.html:
errSSLBadConfiguration –9848 A configuration error occurred.
I have also bootable backup on another disk in which Server Admin is working. I have compared files from /etc, /Library/Preference and /var/servermgrd without finding really relevant differences. Are there other places I should seek?
On some point I have changed host name. Could that cause certificate error in this case? I have checked with "sudo changeip -checkhostname" that names matches.
I have tried making servermgrd to use regular connection instead of SSL by editing /Library/Preferences/com.apple.servermgrd.plist. After changing settings, I have killed or unloaded/loaded servermgrd and tested with lsof that proper port is working. But I guess Server Admin doesn't even try to connect to port 687. Is it possible to force Server Admin to connect port 687. E.g. writing "localhost:687" as address didn't worked.
I have tried creating servermgrd.conf, ssl.crt/ and ssl.key/ to /etc/servermgrd/ even thought they weren't there originally.
I have tried connecting with many different IPs and DNS names and done as instructed here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2757. According lsof, ports 678 and 660 are not in use normally.
    I have tried moving/trashing /var/servermgrd/ and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ServerAdmin.plist.
    I have tried stopping ipfilter.
Is it possible find out that which certificate servermgrd is trying to use?
What else I could try? The server is currently running email and web services among other things with many users, so therefore I can't try too rough methods.

    Little progress maybe...
I tested Server Admin of the working backup while using "sudo fs_usage -f filesys <PID>".
When I did same with the actual nonworking server I noticed this difference:
    18:53:09 statfs private/var/root/Library/Keychains 0.000010 servermgrd
    18:53:09 open private/var/root/Library/Keychains>>>>>>>>>> 0.000008 servermgrd
Path /var/root/Library/Keychains does not exists and backup system doesn't seems to try to use it. I suspect that "errSecNoSuchKeychain –25294 The keychain does not exist" occurs because of this.
    Any hints to fix this?

  • Strange icon in FCE Timeline

A bright aqua "pointer" has appeared in my Timeline Ruler (directly over a time indicator during the 46th minute).
During playback, when the playhead (Timeline) hits this icon, the clips stops (Audio continues). Playhead continues to next clip which plays fine. I can find no info on it, have tried deleteing the clip which freezes and put in another, video freezes. I've tried moving the "frozen" clip elsewhere and it plays fine.
Any ideas about my strange green visitor?

Do want as Al recommended and get rid of the marker. You can also try turning down the opacity of the freezing clip down to 99% and reinsert it where you originally had it in the timeline. Sometimes this cleans up things and the clip will play through fine.

  • Save preferences? send usage info? can't make it stick

    Oddity with Lion, mid-2011 Mini.
Been having trouble getting preferences to stick.
Noticed I can't even check the Privacy/Security option to automatically send usage data to Apple -- unlock, click the box, click the lock, looks good.  Come back a few seconds later and it's unchecked.  Lots of other prefs not saving.
Repairing permissions sporadically changes some things, running it again finds nothing, and running it a while later finds other permissions wrong.
Is this the kind of thing you can take to an Apple store and the geniuses will figure out?

Reinstalling 10.7.2 with a USB stick/Internet solved that problem, juts for the record.
Still having problems with ACLs and suddenly needing to authorize things like moving/trashing files every few days, fixed temporarily by deleting the ACLs, but I"ve only had to reinstall Lion twice in a month and only had five or six kernel panics. I guess that's not too bad.

  • My PB G4 won't boot from any hard drive..stucked in apple icon..

At first, it didn't boot from the internal hard drive...
I could see the apple icon with grey background, but the little runing icon under apple icon didn't appear. There is no sound from the hard drive either...
I tried removing and replacing the RAM, didn't work either...
I have the powerbook CD with apple hardware test, I ran it. It went though a detail test and showed no errors or problems....
And then I tried to start up from the powerbook CD, it works and I was able to go to disk utility. However, I cannot complete verifying disk permission because of a lot of problem, sometimes it said "communication error with disk manager" and sometimes it got frozen and sometimes it just simply stop moving (not frozen, but just not moving, the disk is quite also too).
then I tried to boot from my USB external hard drive, I had my backup in it. However, it is the same as booting from internal drive, no running icon below the apple icon. Also, the external hard drive did not make any sound.
I have never experienced this problem... please help...

Have you added any hardware or new software recently?
Have you tried a safe boot? Hold the shift key while you boot - this does some disk maintenance and doesn't load login items. If this works, try booting normally.
If you can't run Disk Utility verify permissions from the OS X CD did you also try to verify or repair the disk? If this won't work due to errors, you may want to consider a program like Disk Warrior to attempt to repair the hard drive. You can find it at http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/

  • Downloads folder moved to trash.

My downloads folder was moved to trash and now my Macbook is frozen.

    1. Move the file to a folder not in the trash bin
    2. Open the file with preview
    3. Once open click edit, then delete. This will ask you to convert the file into a .png file. click convert.
    4. Move the new converted sync.png to the trash then empty the trash bin.
    It worked for me.

  • TS3276 My iPad mail screen has frozen when trying to trash an email

My iPad screen has frozen when trying to trash an email ' this message cannot be moved to mailbox trash ' with an OK button which will not respond to touching . I have gone in and out of mailbox , turned iPad off for 3 hours - all to no avail

You said that you keep getting the error code 1604. Did you try putting the iPad into recovery mode and when the error code appears - close iTunes and restart iTunes while the iPad is connected to your PC?
Error 1604: This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, uninstalling and reinstalling USB ports, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections, device not recognized properly, computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device). If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for error 1604.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while iPhone remains connected.
iPhone should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.
