Moving user accounts

I reinstalled OS 10.4 Tiger on a second-hand bought iMac Intel and was offered by the Installation Assistant to import user accounts and other files from the older computer, in this case a Powermac G4, using the FireWire method. When I tried to do this I got the message that it could not be done because the G4 did not have OS X installed, which indeed it has. (It has two internal hard drives though, only one of which has OS X on it.)
I then did it the other way round, putting the iMac in hard drive mood, but how do I proceed reestablishing the user accounts? Or should I start all anew? Any suggestions are welcome.

Target mode only shows/sees one drive, on the G4 that'd be the Master drive on the 1st ATA bus.
I think you need to swap drives & possibly jumpers on the G4, then try from the iMac again.

  • Moving user account from Leo G5 imac to Tiger G3 imac?

    Hi all,
I've been moving to a g3 imac running 10.4.11 from a g5 imac running Leo. I've moved all the tunes from one to the other, and the bookmarks also. I'd like to move my entire user account but I don't know how exactly to do this or if it can be done, any suggestions will greatly be appreciated.
    Thank you,

    Hi, and thanks,
Well all I really need is the contents of my user account, pics, documents, and such. Not the whole folder just nearly all of the contents, and I was looking for the most efficient way to do this, and was hoping that this was the easiest way. Any suggestions greatly appreciated, and being I'm not all that knowledgeable about these things I may need it spelled out for me a little more than others .
    Thanks again BDAqua,

  • Moving User Account and settings

I have a new user that set up in Active Directory. I need to move the users settings (Desktop, Dock, Documents Folder) to the new account that was created locally how can I do this? I tried moving the old users "Home" folder into the new users "Home" folder but all the folders I moved when I try to view the folders in the "Side Bar" I am not able to access them they (Desktop ect..) Come up as locked. Any Ideas
    Thanks,
    Michael

If you know the numeric UID of the Active Directory account, open the NetInfo Manager in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and change the uid and home properties of your account to those of the Active Directory account. Log out and log back in. Before doing this, create an extra administrator account in the Accounts pane of System Preferences so that you can more easily fix issues if you run into them.

  • Help needed - moved user accounts

I did an upgrade install on my Dual G5 today, but Leopard doesn't know where my users' files are located. I have a very fast (but smaller) HDD for the OS, and moved my user files to a larger HDD. The links were not carried over in the upgrade/install.
I believe it was a post from Kappy that helped me in moving my user folders initially. Can anyone help me with the needed command line entries needed so that Leopard knows to look to the other HDD for my users?
    Thanks-Gary

If you've reached the limit of 5 authorisations you have the option once a year to deauthorise them all in one go and start over. By the way, this has nothing to do with the number of products you've purchased and registered. The reason for this is that you have a limit of 5 computers on which you can play purchased content: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation
If your system crashes or your reinstall your operating system without deauthorising iTunes first, even a single computer can use up your limit of 5 authorisations. See also this article: One computer using multiple iTunes Music Store authorizations

    Hello,
Can the SidHistory attribute be moved from one User account to a different User account in the same Forest/Domain manually with  Active Directory Users and Computers or with something like Powershell?  it would seem to me this is a safe operation.

  • Changed user account name and moved to OSX Yosemite. Apps still work, but cannot download new apps or updates.

I recently moved to a new MacBook Air with a physically larger hard drive. I had a coworker move over all of my software and data, and everything seems to be playing nicely. All of the current apps I have in place like Photoshop and Illustrator are working just fine.
Unfortunately when I try to download other apps in Creative Cloud it just shows Download Error. I tried reinstalling Creative Cloud, which did nothing.
I should note that when I moved to the larger machine I changed user account names. Whenever I try to use FileSync, it says it is looking for a folder in the old user account folder. This occurs even after trying to change where that folder is in the Preferences.
Additionally I have updated from Mavericks to Yosemite. I do not know what effect that had.
Any insight how to restore my ability to get downloads and updates? Or perhaps how to fix my FileSync?

I think I have it resolved by uninstalling everything and running the cleaner per these instructions: Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6

I accidentally moved my iTunes Library to the Other User Account under the Users/Shared/Account and now I cannot "move" it back to my Desktop. Please help.
Ultimately I would like to share the iTunes Library with my girlfriend, so she may play the Library on her Desktop screen.

  • Finding audio-midi setup files after user account has been moved

I brought my MacBook Pro to the Apple Store and without my knowledge, they created a new user account and moved everything over. This has caused a lot of headaches, the latest being that my Digital Performer prefs are set back to factory and my detailed audio midi setups are gone.
Does anyone know where the audio midi setup files might be located on the HD so I can reattach them to the app?
    Thanks.

  • Moving itunes account from one windows user account to another....

Hello! I really hope some one here can help!
I use one of two user accounts on my comp, my boyfriend is the "owner" and I have my own. For separate itunes accounts .... Something is messed up with my profile on this user account and an IT friend told me he thinks that I should just delete my whole profile from the OWNER one and start over, saving anything i need beforehand.
I was about to do that until I realised that my Itunes account would also be gone.
Is there any way that I can transfer my itunes account to another user account on my computer without losing everything and having to start over???
    Pllllease & thank you!!!

Well, if all of the music is in My Music\iTunes, then just copy that folder.
    If it isn't:
If it's in a shared location, such as the root of the drive, and both account are accessing it, then ignore the music, and transfer just the 'iTunes' folder within My Music.
If it's in an account specific location (like on your desktop), first consolidate it to your My Music, then transfer that folder.

We tried plugging the ipod in on the 2nd account but the songs don't copy down to the notebook. We also tried to share the songs on the first account but they don't show when logged in under the 2nd account. Any ideas would be appreciated!

  • One iMac - Multiple user accounts - Can iTunes music be moved b/t accts?

My family (wife, son, daughter, and me) share an imac but we all have our own user accounts. Our entire itunes music library is in one user account and is getting to the point of being unmanageable.
Can I move some of my itunes library (e.g., my son's music) to another user account on the same iMac?
It's my understanding that an ipod can only be synced with one itunes library at a time, but I thought Apple also restricted the usage of music bought from itunes to a finite number of computers. If this is true, I think I would be able to transfer a group of songs from one user account to another so long as the user accounts were on the same computer.
I think if I place the songs i want to transfer to my son's user account on an ipod, log into my son's account, plug the ipod in, start up itunes, then I should be able to transfer the purchases from one user account to the other.
    Will this work?

    Thanks, this will work.
One somewhat related follow-up question. After I have dragged the .M4P files into the shared directory, and logged into the other user account, they appear as "protected". After clicking the "more info" button, i can change the access to "read and write" for each m4p file, and then I can drag it into itunes.
How can I make this change (read and write) global so I will not have to unlock and enable each m4p file?

  • Moving iTunes libraries from one user account to another on same PC

My PC has 3 active User Accounts (wife, son, and me). My son uses itunes under my User Account and that's where his music library is stored (the iTunes account is his, but he accesses it from my User Account).
I want to remove the iTunes Library from my User Account and place it in his User Account so that he no longer has to use iTunes from my User Account. Remember, this is one machine with 3 separate User Accounts. I don't want to move these files to another computer, I'm just trying to get rid of them and put them in his account.
Can this be done and, if so, how? MANY THANKS. . .

Create a playlist in your iTunes library with his songs.
Select this playlist and select all the songs then drag them from the iTunes window to a Shared directory.
Then in iTunes, select all the songs in this playlist, select them again and *Shift Delete* to remove them from your library and your directory.
Open his login and add the songs from the Shared directory to his iTunes.

  • When I moved all my music stored in my Windows 7 user account under the My Music folder  to my PC's 'Public Music' folder, I could no longer add/delete music or movies to my iPhone using iTunes. How do I fix this?

I have been synching my iPhone with iTunes without problems for a long time.  I also used iTunes to add/change/delete Music & Videos on my iPhone with tuch contents from my iTunes Library.
One day, I decided to move all my Music stored on my laptop's Windows 7 User Account under "My Music" to the Windows 7 User "Public"  under "Public Music".  When I opened iTunes, all my music was gone so I just added the folder "Public Music" to my iTunes Library, iTunes did some work and all my music was then back, listed in my iTunes.
However, when I would synch my iPhone now, when I view the music or movie contents in my iPhone using iTunes, I can no longer ADD Music or Movies to my iPhone and I cannot delete music or movies in my iPhone using iTunes anymore.
How do I fix this?  Please help.

Try opening iTunes preferences. Then click on advanced tab. Then uncheck "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library." By default, iTunes copies music to its own media folder when you use iTunes to play the music.

  • Moving All The Important Stuff to a New User Account. What to take?

It's been quite an eventful week and, because I can't turn %%$$! FileVault off on my original user account, I've just decided to move over to my back up account. "Brian" now has Admin abilities but I was wondering about the process of getting Brian to look/feel just like my original, now f'ed up account. Is it just about putting the Preferences file folder onto an ext. HD and putting it into the new account's Library? (I've managed to screw things up REAL BAD messing about with my Preferences Folder. I really don't want to go through that again!)
Anyway, anything else beside the above folder? I've got all my music and photos/movies already on the Ext. HD. I'm so mad at the Brianhardy account, I really look forward to deleting it. (No, that doesn't make any sense...)
Finally, how do I pick a better picture for brian for the users window? Nothing against dogs but.......
    Thanks.
    Brian

    Hi Brian
I went through what you are currently describing for the same reason as yours: disabling FileVault. Let me give you a few suggestions.
First of all, what I did is I actually went through all the files in the Preferences folder, to choose the ones I really wanted to move to the new account. There were so many obsolete preference files in there remaining from uninstalled apps that it was worth seriously cleaning up this folder.
Second, the Preferences folder is probably not the only folder in your Library you want to migrate. I'll give you a list of the stuff I migrated, but some of if might not apply to you.
My address book. It was corrupted, so I ended up exporting all the contacts, group by group, and importing them into the fresh, new address book on the new account. But you might not have to go through this trouble.
My calendars. I am a .Mac subscriber, so I synced over .Mac between the two accounts. (Be careful, it is a bit more tricky than it sounds). Same for all the stuff that can be synced (see the .Mac preference pane): Safari bookmarks, email accounts and rules, keychain... For some reason the keychain sync did not work, so I had to do the same export-import procedure as for my address book, except I had to give my password for every item in the keychain... :S I can type my password pretty fast, now :P
/Library/Application Support/iWeb if you use iWeb to create websites, which I don't recommend, after fighting with it for quite a while (but I haven't tried iLife'08 yet). More generally, you should have a look into this Application Support folder to see if anything in there is worth migrating.
    /Library/Mail
/Library/Sounds because I had put lots of custom sounds in there that I can use for iCal alarms
    /Library/Widgets
By the way, after migrating to this new user, I decided NOT to make it an admin, and to create a second new user with admin rights. I read this makes your mac more secure. Whenever you do something that requires admin rights, you enter the username and password of this admin user.
I also kept the old user for a while, just in case I realize later that there is something I forgot to migrate (which happened a couple of times). I just deleted it a few days ago.
Changing a user's picture can be done in the Accounts preference pane in the System preferences.
    Good luck

  • Moving itunes content when creating new user account

Recently added two iphones to our rapidly growing apple family of devices.  Our imac was originally set up with just one main user account the whole family shared.  The problem I have is with sharing, syncing, merging with my iphone all family shared information.  For example, the contact list on the shared family mac is huge and includes many "x-mas card only people" that I will never need to call.  Same with shared calendar.  If make some quick notes or reminders on my calendar just for me, it replicates on to everyones device.  The guy at the apple store suggested I should have my own account.  I have done that and am now seeing the limitations OSX puts on different accounts as it seeks to protect each account.  An example here is trying to share and use our iphoto library.  My goal is to have itunes in my new , separate account that syncs to my own contact list (won't change back to the full family list every time I sync), has just the apps I want (not my daughters 300 apps that seem to keep re-appearing on my phone), still be able to sync to the family calendar but maybe have one of my own as well, have my own playlists from itunes 9I was able to find a way to access the big family music library in my account) and be able to build iphoto albums to sync.
I think problems stem from a lack of understanding the basics of what separate "accounts" really can and can't do as it relates to different applications and devices.
    Thanks for any help!

    Drag \Music\iTunes folder to \Users\Shared.
Log in to the new user account and copy \Users\Shared\iTunes to \Music\iTunes.
