Moving user profiles from Server 2012 with RDS services to User profile disks Server 2012R2

Hello i have a question about moving my C:\users profiles.
My current settings on the servers are:
AD-Server 2012
SQL-Server 2012
TS- server with RDS roles (RDwebacces, RDs broker, RD session host) 2012
everything about user profiles is now in C:\Users
My new settings for the server will be:
AD-ActiveDirectory - server
SQL-Server
TS1- RDS (RDwebacces, broker, RDS server group management) 2012R2 (I have enabeld userProfileDisks to Filesistem server)
TS2- RDS(Session host) load balance 2012R2
TS3- RDS (Session host) load balance 2012
FileSistem - server ( here i will have on E: partition the new functionality UserProfileDisks) 2012R2
So is there a way to move profiles from TS - C:\Users to FileSistem - E:\UserProfileDisks
I am new to this so any idea wil be helpful.

Hi,
If the UPD is configured on the server which holds existing user profiles, just select the option:
store all user settings and data inside the profile disk.
Since you are moving user profiles between different servers, then user profile contents need to be migrated manually.

Amy

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS: RDS Users are unable to delete files from their desktop

    Hello,
We are working with Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS. We also implemented User Profile Disks. This is all working fine without problems. The only issue I have is that normal users are unable to delete files from their desktop. They are getting a message:
you'll need administrator permission to delete this file, with the prompt for administrator access.
They can edit, copy, rename, cut and paste files. But they cannot delete a file from their desktop.
I checked the security permissions of the files on the desktop (for example a normal self-created PDF file) and the users are owner and have "Full Control" over the files.
I checked the file permissions and took a look under "Advanced", selecting the specific domain user and checked the "Advanced Permissions" and the user has the "Delete" option checked. So he should be able to delete the
    file.
I am guessing this is UPD related issue, or something in GPO. But I already unlinked the GPO objects, that I felt could be the source of this problem, but without results.
Could someone give me a hint on where to look? It's kinda annoying to users, that they can't delete their own files.

    Hello Bria,
What you should check first, is the NTFS permissions on the User Profile Disk to begin with. See if the user has full control over the items that are in the UPD.
Also check the GPO's that are enabled for the user and computer account. You can check that by running: gpresult /h <path>\gpresult.html
There are two GPO settings that could prevent the user from deleting his/her own items:
    User
    Configuration\\Policies\\Administrative Templates\\Windows Components\\Windows Explorer\
Hide these specified drives in My Computer
Prevent access to specified drives in My
    Computer
There might be other GPO settings, that block deleting items on the UPD, but can't think of any out of my head.
I can only think NTFS and GPO settings that might prevent the user from deleting items. In my case it was a GPO setting, that I didn't suspect.

  • Resizing User Profile Disks in Existing Server 2012 R2 RDS Deployment Question

Once the initial maximum size is set and the VHDXs have been created in a Server 2012 R2 RDS deployment, will attempting to increase Collection's maximum UPD size by say.. issuing a Powershell command of:
    Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration -CollectionName MySpiffyNewCollection -MaxUserProfileDiskSizeGB 10
over-write the existing VHDXs instead of simply increasing their size? (max size is currently 5GB)
I'm not at a point where I can test this in a lab condition to find out, and I have not found this question asked (or at least not definitively answered) in this forum yet.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
We can resize the UPD file with below command:
    Resize-VHD –Path c:\BaseVHDX.vhdx –SizeBytes 1TB
After running this mount the .vhdx file and open disk manager and there will be unallocated disk, and then you can click extend disk/volume and its done.
You can refer following article for more information.

    Hope it helps!

  • Users Cannot Change Passwords on a Server 2012 R2 RDS Farm

Hello I have a Server 2012 R2 RDS Farm consisting of 1 server that has connection broker and gateway configured and 4 RDS Session Hosts. The works great I even have a separate remote app farm to distribute the apps to the servers, my main issue is passwords
and the lack of the EU ability to change these, listed below are my symptoms.
Users password has expired denied logon instantly with no ability to change password.
User tries to change password whilst in 30 day warning period using ctrl alt end the user is advised the password does not meet complexity requirements I have checked this and they do meet them.
Expired passwords can be changed via the RDWeb site however this is not an option for us.
    Chris

    Hi,
Firstly, based on my knowledge, remote users may have to change their passwords before expired. If not, they have to use OWA or logon on locally to change their passwords.
Regarding the issue, please let us know if the following policies are enabled in your domain.
    Enforce password history
    Minimum password age
Also, does a local domain user have the same issue?
    Thanks.

  • Trying to install features for PowerPivot and Reporting Services from SQL Server 2012 with SP2, but no access to key?

    Hi,
I had installed SQL Server 2012 PowerPivot on WFE and App Server. This is test farm with 1 WFE and 1 APP and 1 SQL Server.
However, we had a heap of issues with Windows Claims Authentication and PowerPivot - issues were raised with "unable to make a connection to EntityDataSource" . Now we uninstalled the PowerPivot and Reporting Services features and wanted to install
with the SQL Server 2012 with SP2. Originally SP2 was installed seperately and we had read there had been issues.
Anyway on trying to install the features again using the SQL Server 2012 with SP2 iso I get
    Could not open key UNKNOWN\Components
I don't want to start deleting or changing permissions as quite dodgey. What is this key for anyway and how do I resolve my issue.
    Thanks.
    John.

    Hi John,
Did you meet the error message during the process of configuring the PowerPivot for SharePoint?
If yes, I suppose that the existing features or components have not been uninstalled completely.
I recommend to delete the two keys left when uninstalling the PowerPivot and please make a copy of the registry keys before you delete the two keys:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\15.0\WSS\ServiceProxies\Microsoft.AnalysisServices.Sharepoint.Integration.MidTierServiceProxy
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\15.0\WSS\ServiceProxies\Microsoft.AnalysisServices.Sharepoint.Integration.MidTierServicea
Please check the steps in the link below to see if there anything wrong when you uninstalling the PowerPivot and then re-install it to see how it works:

  • Adobe Reader XI Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS Support

    Hi all
Is the Adobe Reader XI on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Session Host supportet?
    Thanks a lot

I'm assuming that you are looking for the place inside the GUI to start Remote Control of a usersession. On Windows Server 2008 R2 you could just right-click a user inside Task Manager and launch Remote Control. With Windows Server 2012
R2 Remote Control has been moved and is now part of the mstsc.exe. There are two ways to launch a Remote Control, either from the Server Manager GUI or using the commandline. I'm specifically referring to R2 because shadowing was not available
in Windows Server 2012, and got reintroduced (and improved) in Windows Server 2012 R2.
For all the options check out this blog post:
Detailed walkthrough on Remote Control (Shadowing), reintroduced in Windows Server 2012 R2

  • Cannot install or manage Server 2012 R2 RDS server locally but works remotely

I am working with a Server 2012 R2 standard machine and attempting to get Remote Desktop Services installed and configured on it. Using the Add Roles and Features wizard while logged on locally to the server in question resulted in the error
“Unable to connect to the server by using Windows PowerShell remoting.” However, if I use a different Server 2012 R2 machine to run the Add Roles and Features wizard remotely targeted
at the original server then I can successfully get RDS installed.
Also, after the installation has completed I cannot manage RDS locally on the server but can successfully manage it remotely from another Server 2012 R2 box. When attempting to use Server Manager locally and choose the Remote Desktop Services menu the error
message "A Remote Desktop Services deployment does not exist in the server pool."
The server appears to be functioning correctly and can be managed remotely just not locally. I can reproduce the behavior on other Server 2012 boxes in the environment.
What would cause local install and management to fail but remote management work?

    Hi,
Have you added the RDS server under server manager ADD server? Does it show the server in server list?
Check whether there is any wrong IP address\hostname entry occurs under DNS record which looks\points the DNS entry successfully.

  • Difference between database features - SQL Server 2008 R2 navtive vs SQL Server 2012 with SQL Server 2008 compatibility set?

I am investigating the impact of upgrading from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012. To reduce the impact of the upgrade, I am planning to restore / create our application database onto SQL Server 2012 with compatibility level 100 (SQL Server 2008 and

  • SQL Server 2012 with SP1 on Windows 8.1 Pro

Can I install "out-of-the-box" SQL Server 2012 with Service Pack 1 Enterprise Edition or SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition on my Windows 8.1 VM?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
SQL Server 2012 SP1 is fully supported by Windows 8.1, and there is no need to install any SQL update for the installation.
Enterprise Edition is not supported on client operating systems like Windows 8.1 but setup won’t prevent you from installing.
Developer Edition is fully supported on client operating systems.
    Hope this helps.

  • SQL Server 2012 with Visual Studio 2013 with SSIS/Integration services project?

I wanted to build an integration services project to import data from multiple sources using a vendor's API.
I wish I could recall how I got to the point where I was able to build one and have it run successfully, but I had to install so many things that I honestly don't remember.
However, I noticed my PC booting really slowly after that, and I saw that I had components of VS 2010, VS 2012 and VS 2013 installed, along with SQL Server 2008 and 2012.  So I uninstalled a bunch of stuff, hoping to get to where I had only the most
current versions of all, that were compatible with my corporate environment.  So I was aiming for Visual Studio 2013 (Premium, I think) and SQL Server 2012.
Took me 2 days.  Now I'm at the point where I think - and I'm here to learn if I'm correct - that I cannot get an oData Source component into my project and use VS 2013 IF I want to stick with Sql Server 2012.  Is that correct?
I get very confused when trying to determine how the acronyms relate:  SSIS, SSDT, SSDT-BI, etc.

    Hi Anonymous11847,
SSDT: Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools for Visual Studio 2010, it contains Business Intelligence project templates for Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services that support Visual Studio 2010. This can be installed when SQL Server is
installed. It supports various SQL Server versions as follows:
SSAS projects can target SQL Server 2012 or lower
SSRS projects can target SQL Server 2012 or lower
SSIS projects can target only SQL Server 2012
SSDT-BI for VS 2012: Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012, it contains Business Intelligence project templates for Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services that support Visual Studio 2012.
This needs to be separately downloaded and installed. It supports various SQL Server versions as follows:
SSAS projects can target SQL Server 2012 or lower
SSRS projects can target SQL Server 2012 or lower
SSIS projects can target only SQL Server 2012
SSDT-BI for VS 2013: Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2013, it contains Business Intelligence project templates for Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services that support Visual Studio 2013.
This needs to be separately downloaded and installed. It supports various SQL Server versions as follows:
SSAS projects can target SQL Server 2014 or lower
SSRS projects can target SQL Server 2014 or lower
SSIS projects can target only SQL Server 2014
So if the SQL Server version is SQL Server 2012, we should install SSDT or SSDT-BI for VS2012 to create SSIS project.

  • SQL server 2012 with SP2 for hosting VMM 2012 R2 DB server

    Hi,
I would like to implement System Center 2012 R2 Operation Manager, VMM and Configuration Manager.
I have proposed to my customer two MSSQL Server 2012 Box, one for SCOM/VMM DB server and another one for SCCM (SCCM DB and SCVMM DB cannot be on the same computer).
But I read on Microsoft web site that only SQL Server 2012 SP1 are supported for VMM DB server and SQL Server 2012 SP2 is supported for SCOM DB server.
So my question is: Can I deploy one box SQL server 2012 with SP2 for hosting VMM 2012 R2 DB server ?  if not, When SQL Server 2012 SP2 will be supported for VMM 2012 R2 DB server ?

As per the link this seems to me a known issue. I cannot 100 % say because I have seen/faced this issue with
SP1 and you mentioned SP2. I would always suggest to install RTM only there is option to un select SP2 during installing.
Well thank you for reporting I guess Microsoft would take this as feedback.

  • SQL Server 2012 Express SP1 will not install on Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2

I have been attempting to install SQL Server 2012 with SP1 Express Edition for about a two weeks and have been unsuccessful.  My organization recently purchased a new Dell PowerEdge T320 Server (64 Bit) with Intel Xeon Proc.-E5-2420; 2.2Ghz, 32 Gb RAM,
1 Tb RAID 5 H/D, and Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials (preinstalled).  The server will be configured as an on premises server.  We are running a small church management application that requires SQL Server 2012 SP1 Express.  Per the direction
of our application vendor, we downloaded the SQL Server 2012 SP1 Express file (SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe) from the Microsoft SQL Server Website.  We ran the file "As Administrator" and the SQL Server 2012 Setup program began.
We selected New SQL Server Stand-Alone Installation, successfully installed the needed Product Updates, and accepted the MS SQL Server 2013 Express License terms.
When the Feature Selection Page appeared we checked only the "Data Base Eng Services".  The
Instance Configuration Page was displayed and we inserted a "Named Instance= Shelby",then pressed next.  On the
Server Configuration Page the only change was setting the "sql server browser = automatic".  The Database Engine Configuration Page appeared
and we inserted the following settings:1] Server Configuration Tab; a) mixed mode, b)inserted SQL Server Admin pswd, c) added current user as administrator: 2] Data Directories Tab; default/no changes: 3] User Instanced Tab; default/no
changes: and 4] Filestream Tab; default/no changes.  Next the
Reporting Services Configuration Page came up and the reporting services native mode was set to
"install and configure".  The Error Reporting Page appeared and was left as the
"default".  The SQL Server 2012 Setup program proceeded to Installation Progress Page and started to install. Just before the install program ended it displayed a message saying that there
were errors and the Database Eng Services did not succeed. I uninstalled SQL Server 2012 SP1 Express three (3) times, ran Windows Update after every uninstall, attempted to install the Database Engine and got the same results.  Are there any patches or
special procedures for correctly installing SQL Server 2012 SP1 Express on my hardware configuration or Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2?  Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Can you post the setup Summary and detail logs, which will help to figure out the problem? The details about the location can be found at https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143702(v=sql.110).aspx

  • Advice on setting up a windows server 2012 domain LAB for study within Hyper V server 2012 r2 machine

HI im wanting to setup a study lab containing several windows 2012 r2 servers (mixture of core and full installs) to allow me to study towards my MCSA in server 2012 r2 and then for MCSE.
    Physical equpiment,
1 pc   which is has window 8.1 pro installed from this machine.  This machine i would like  to remote manage and connect through to my Hyper-v server and then into any of the virtual machines. (this machine is more of a gaming pc so not
able to run to many vm's from it)
2 pc bought Just for study  8 core processor 1 tb of hhd space 16 gb of ram.
This machine i would like to setup using hyper-v server 2012 r2,  which then i would create a test domain within it also with some clients allowing me to play and undstand the principles im learning.
now im getting conflictiong information regarding the Hyper-v server 2012.
If i set the hyper-v server up as a standalone in a work group.  Would i be able to manage ther VM's within the hyperv server from my external windows 8 pro machine using the remote server management tools or would i need to connect that pc
    to the domain.
Things I think i can do but not sure.   as im still learning
Could I setup a server 2012 r2 running AD dns and add the hyper-v role then wihtin that create the rest of the domain inside, allowing me from my other phyical machine log on to domain and manage all servers and machines.
Could I set up as i originally suggested, set up hyper-v 2012 server in a workgroup,  then create the domain within the hyper-v server but still connect from my external pc to manage the hyper-v and all the internal VM's within the domain.
I could run a Domain controller on a VM from my other windows 8 machine (within hyper-v or wmware), then on the 2nd machine install the hyper-v server connect it to the domain running from the other machine from what i can see, many people say this is the
better option, BEST Practice, but this is only a lab and i dont require resilience.  and i would prefer to have my  as a sever manager via the remote tools.
So what i like to know if you can point me in the right direction either by a guide for someone who has setup a similar to me.
or tell which of the above options is possible or not so i dont waste anytime.
Network, i know i can do this virtually but i already have cisco routers and layer 2 swicthes so i may make the network lab via them.
Thanks in advance  for any help you can give me

"If i set the hyper-v server up as a standalone in a work group.  Would i be able to manage ther VM's within the hyperv server from my external windows 8 pro machine using the remote server management tools or would i need to
connect that pc to the domain."
It makes it easier to set up if everything is in the same domain, but it is quite possible to manage the VMs without being part of the domain.  A very useful tool that I use for my lab all the time (my lab is in a lab domain and my laptop is in the
corporate domain with absolutely no trusts between them) is RDCMAN.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21101  I all my machines, physical and virtual, defined within RDCMAN and can easily connect to any one of them from my laptop.  But to understand how to manage everything remotely, I create
one virtual workstation within the domain and load all the management tools on it.  I RDP to the management workstation and perform most management functions, but I can get to any machine directly if I need to.
"Could I setup a server 2012 r2 running AD dns and add the hyper-v role then wihtin that create the rest of the domain inside, allowing me from my other phyical machine log on to domain and manage all servers and machines."
Yes, but you could also build the AD as a VM, too.

  • Are there any differences between Server 2012 and Server 2012 R2 that might impact TFS or SQL server required for TFS?

    Hi,
In the interest of just getting started and learning the basics of setting up TFS, I previously setup an IDE using a large workstation running Windows 8.  I set up the required servers for TFS using VM's through Hyper-V.  I am now transferring
everything to a new and separate physical server.
My question stems from a problem I had when I originally setup the TFS system the 1st time.  I couldn't get SQL server to work using the Server 2012 R2 download from the subscription center.  When I used Server 2012, it worked, so I proceeded that
    way just to get going.
So now I'm setting things up anew on a new physical box, I want to ask up front, is there some difference in the R2 version that causes problems with either TFS or SQL server, or was there likely some oversight on my part when I did things the 1st time?
As an addendum to my question, I always assumed R2 merely means the Server software has progressed to a refined state and is ready for wide distribution and easy setup.  I assumed that there are no differences between the Standard version and the R2
    version.  Is that understanding correct?
    Thanks.

    Hi Daniel,
Thanks for your response.  That's a great link.  I don't recall seeing a page that is so clear and easy to read back when I was doing this the 1st time, but I probably just missed it.  That helps.
I am/was using TFS2013 and VS2013.  As I recall, my problem was getting SQL Server to work, but I thought asking this question on this forum was wiser because I figured everyone using TFS would be well familiar with these issues.
At any rate, it seems as though TFS2013 is fine with Server 2012 standard or R2.
I was using SQL Server 2012, and it also seems as though it works on R2:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(v=sql.110).aspx
Anyway, thanks for your support.  I'll be trying this again and we'll see.
