Moving violation (pun intended)

Hi everyone, strange bug here, wondering if anyone can relate:
1. I have photos in my iPhoto library on the main account on my iMac.
2. I export certain ones as JPGs to the desktop.
3. Open up the JPGs in Preview, Photoshop, whatever, they're fine.
4. Move said photos to the Shared folder, in order to transfer the exported JPGs to another user.
5. Switch to the second user account.
6. Open the JPGs in the Shared folder, Finder says they are corrupted.
7. Switch back to the main account, open the same JPGs in the Shared folder, they're fine.
What gives? Account corruption? This only happens with iPhoto-exported JPGs, no other problems whatsoever.
Thanks a million!

Marc André,
sacrebleu, je viens d'essayer de repliquer ton probleme, mais j'ai eu de bon resultat!
Have you tried to open the picture with quicktime - by dragging it over the Quicktime icon (if you have it on your dock)
I have recreated what you did 1-7, and it worked fine for me!... maybe some of your pictures are copyrighted or could be the permissions are not allowed.
Do command+ info on the photo, ain the resulting window, look under ownership & permissions. Maybe the photo is locked.
In my case the photo was locked but it did not affect it being seen by other users when it was in the shared folder!!!!!
make sure that access: = read & write
group:access= read & write
others:= read & write
otherwise I don't know!
I don't know pas savoir!
Dis moi si ca fonctionne!'

  • Graphics are moving from their intended position in browser view

    I have a column of text with sub heads and a few lines of text below each subhead. I have places small graphics next to each subhead. I want the graphic to correspond with the subhead. When I view this in browser mode, the graphics scramble and lose their positions. Especially if you enlarge the view in your browser (Safari > command > plus) or reducing the view (command > minus). The graphics are skipping over and under text. Can I lock these into the respective positions?

  • Extereme Issues..ha ha, no pun intended...with wireless, Uverse, Iphone

    I just installed My Airport Extreme and am having a bit of trouble managing it, with my Uverse service.  I have read so much information on the topic and am unsure where to go.  At present, everyone in my house has internet access and since my wife works from home, I have been hesitant to make any changes.
    I can get our MacBook Airs to connect to the n network through the Airport Extreme, and it seems to hold up, but if I go away for a bit or when I get up the next day, it has reconnected back to the Uverse network which is much slower.
    The airport extereme and Uverse 2 wire router are right next to each other, but seem to get a stronger signal on our ipads from the Uverse router..that was a surprise to me, though I submit, the visual representation of the wireless signals could be flawed.
    For the life of me, I cannot get an Express to hook up to the network and extend the Extreme's network...when that happens, I lose visibility to the Extreme on that network and can see it only on the Uverse network...so odd.
    The most frustrating is that my iphone 4 cannot join the Extreme's network - even the slower b/g one..always says 'unable to connect'.
    That kind of trouble makes me hesitant to turn off the uverse wireless network and go all out on the extreme since I am having trouble with the iphone altogether and the macbooks holding the connection.
    I bought the extereme for the n speeds, for the back to my mac functionality (my wife travels often) and just because apple is our whole house.  I clearly am not qualified to do such a reorg on our wireless set up.
    Are there quick tips, quick hits that I may be missing somewhere?
    any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I see... i can definitely understand that choice!
    Though, If all of the products you are using are Apple's, there should really be no issues with connectivity. It's just a matter of getting things configured properly. Optimal setup would be to disable the wireless portion of your 2wire modem/router, thereby making it strictly a modem and not a wireless deterrent in your setup! Once that's done, you simply reset the Extreme and reconfigure it as the main router in Airport Utility.
    When all is said and done... extending the network should be a cake walk with the other router out of the picture!
    Post back if your stuck anywhere!!!

  • Living on the Edge with iPhone 3GS (pun intended)

    I just got an iPhone 3GS to replace my original iPhone. I live in Cleveland, OH, USA. Generally, my 3G coverage is okay, but my overall coverage at home stinks. There are plenty of dead spots in my home, and when I am on the network, I often connect to the Edge. My phone is typically on my WIFI network at home and at my office.
    One thing I have noticed is that if I initiate a call when my iPhone 3GS is on WIFI and then leave WIFI, the 3G network does not seem to kick in until the call is over. It seems that the only time I can be on the phone and on 3G is if the phone was in 3G mode at the time. Is this behavior typical? Is this what I am paying ATT $15/month more than my original iPhone? I guess, you can count me among the list of folks who think that ATT stinks.

    David M. Fresco wrote:
    Right, but I am starting the call on WIFI and assuming that the phone is on 3G under the WIFI. However, if I leave the WIFI range, 3G does not kick in.
    but the call has to be carried either on the EDGE or the UMTS network... you can't see which one it's connected to under the wifi symbol.
    the times you wander out of wifi and can't connect, your voice call was setup on the edge network, and the times you can, your call was setup on the umts network.
    your lucky sometimes you get 3g im on the all edge all the time setup where i live

  • Extreme problems with airport and harddrive no pun intended. please help.

    okay experts, please help. i have a lacie brick 500gb external drive that i got yesterday. i attatched it to the airport and the drive showed up on the desktop fine and dandy. the problem was that no backup software would recognize that a hard drive was attatched. i was given some advice to format the hard disk for apple using disk utility. i did that and it finished formatting this morning. (i had to do all this by plugging the hard drive in directly to the computer's usb port, it wouldn't let me do it attatched to the airport) now the dilemma is that when i attatch it to the airport, the disk no longer even shows up on the desktop, or anywhere else. wen i go to airport utility, manual setup and disks, it shows the hard drive there, but nowhere else. i know it isn't a problem with the hard drive because when plugged in directly to the computer, everything works fine. can someone please give me a run through of the settings i need to have set? i'm quite sure it is correct. i am just frustrated beyond belief getting this hard drive to work via the airport. thank you very much guys and gals.
    wait....update
    okay. finally, it is on the desktop, but not how it should be. superduper or the lacie backup system still doesn't recognize it as a disk. when i plug in the h.d. to the computer usb port it shows up as an orange icon on the desktop and is recognized by the software. but when i plug it in via the airport it shows up on the desktop as a different icon, like a box and isn't recognized by the software. what on earth is going on?
    this is driving me mad.

    You need to make sure that your backup software supports Bonjour(network attached) devices. I use the mac backup program and it recognizes AEBSn disk devices.
    Can you copy a file manually from finder to the drive?

  • "Bash"ing my head into wall (pun intended)

    How do I get colour in the terminal, I added alias ls='ls --color' to .bashrc and .bash_profile like I would in Linux, but nothing. I cannot even have it use colour on the command line with ls --color. Bash is bash, so I assume there is a way to do this on mac too. Or do I have to do something like recompile ls with colour support?

    If your Terminal is not set to xterm-color but to VT102/VT100 (which is, what I prefer), your chances are near 0 to get coloured output unless you build your own ls command.

  • Moving music and video to another drive

    I just installed a second hard drive on my computer and I plan on moving all media (i.e. music, video, pictures, etc.) to that drive. As I was thinking through the process, I realized that iTunes might take issue with this.
    Any words of wisdom on how best to make this move without major impact to iTunes? Don't care about deleting/re-adding music and movies to the Library, that's easy enough. My big concern is losing any playlists, preferences or the like in the process. Not to mention what happens to whatever music I actually purchased on iTunes (very little).
    Bottom line - am I better off making the move with the existing iTunes application installed and left to its own devices (no pun intended), helping iTunes find the "lost" files it will surely yell at me about, and proceeding from that direction, OR exporting my playlists, deleting iTunes outright (losing any music I purchased via iTunes in the process), reinstalling iTunes from scratch, reimporting the playlists, etc.?
    This should be easy, right?
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    That didn't work. It did lock the video clip into the layer that it was hovering in when I started holding shift (it would slide left and right but wouldnt go between layers) but as soon as I let go of the mouse to grab the audio track it unselected the entire clip.

  • Moving a SWF containing relative Links no longer work

    Hi
    I've come to the experts.
    I created a Flash Catalyst Project that contains external URL links. I actual want them to be internal relative links.
    I've followed the process of using to Flash Builder to edit the Main.mxml file to change to a relative path.
    I hit the Project/Export Release Build...
    I open the SWF file in Flash Player from with in the 'bin-release' folder and it all works great. However when I move the swf file to another folder that actually contains what would be the same relative path to the files I want to link it no longer works.
    If I look at the content of the swf file in a third party editor/viewer app the relative path is correct.
    I'm probably missing something very fundamental but just can't 'click' to it, pun intended.
    Thanks for your assitance
    David

    Hi Bear
    Thanks for your help.
    I've referred to both the references your below. Both were useful but still the issue remains.
    When I relocate the swf file with all the associated src files it doesn't work
    As a further test I pointed the 'Project Export Release Build' from Flash Builder to the actual folder I wanted the swf file in and again it didn't work
    If however I point the 'Project Export Release Build' to //documents/Adobe Flash Builder 4/bin-release  it does work
    Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

  • How do I open a window at moving button's current location?

    I'm creating a flash movie of various fish swimming across
    the screen. At the moment I've got each fish as a movie symbol
    inside a button symbol whose position moves across the screen as
    the fish swims along. When you click a fish I want text to pop up
    at the fish's current location telling you about the fish. The text
    sits there while the fish continues to swim away and after a
    certain time the text disappears.
    The fish swims away but the text needs to stays put. If you
    click the fish again the same text appears at the new location as
    well, so I need to be able to have multiple instances of the text
    on screen at once.
    What is the best way to make this text appear at the fish's
    current location and disappear again after a certain time? In the
    long term I'll probably want to make the text appear in a bubble
    and have a little picture of the fish as well. The text for each
    fish will be different, describing that species of fish and his
    habitat, etc.
    I've never touched Flash before so any help would be greatly
    appreciated.
    Which way should I go? Action Script? Behaviors? Listeners
    & Broadcasters? Something else?
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated! Please help!
    I'm using Flash Professional 8.
    Thanks,
    John

    Well, if you've really got no experience, this may be a
    little awkward, but
    the answer is yes, it involves ActionScript.
    There are several potential solutions, but the basic
    principle is to track
    the _x, _y coordinates of the fish movieClip when the user
    clicks on it.
    Then have a dynamic text box that is inside another movieClip
    display the
    correct text at those specific coordinates. This is not
    really a task to
    dive into (no pun intended) as a beginner. I'd look into
    variables,
    functions, and specifically duplicateMovieClip (use this on
    the text
    movieClip) for starters.

  • [iPhone SDK] Get the *intended" contentOffset in UIScrollViewDelegate calls

    Hi all,
    a lot of the delegate calls in UIScrollViewDelegate happen before the scrolling is finished, like:
    - (void)scrollViewWillBeginDecelerating:(UIScrollView *)scrollView;
    - (void)scrollViewDidEndDragging:(UIScrollView *)scrollView willDecelerate:(BOOL)decelerate;
    When I'm in these functions, the UIScrollView is still moving to its intended contentOffset. However, the contentOffset property only returns to me the current offset. Is there other property I can look for that tells me the intended offset that the UIScrollView is animating to?
    If not, anyone know if a way I can calculate this?
    Thanks!

    You would need to ask this over at devforums.apple.com. These forums are for regular users of the iPhone rather than developer questions.

  • Moving graphics

    The problem we are having is when we are createing a word
    doc. with graphics and text that wraps. If we place a graphic on
    the right side of the screen and matching text to the left of the
    document that wraps whenever we compile it the document and text
    have moved from their intended positions. The formatting in the
    document will remain as long as the document is not compiled. We
    are evaluating this software and Adobe has no provisions for
    support while an evaluation is being made. Any help we can get is
    appreciated.

    Keep in mind that Word is just a familiar tool to compose the
    help file. The end product will have inherent limitations. Winhelp
    doesn't support test wrapping around an image. In HTMLHelp you
    could put everything in a table without visible borders. The text
    in one cell and the image in another. HTMLHelp is only HTML. If you
    can't do it in HTML, you won't be able to do it in HTMLHelp. Just
    because you can do it in Word doesn't necessarily mean that the
    final product will do it.

  • A rant about C with a question at the end. :P

    C is okay. It's just really hard to understand.
    So this is my rant about it. It starts out by listing where I've been in terms of programming and then lists my difficulties with C itself.
    I discovered C many years ago. I'm not too sure how. All I know is that for many years I've wanted to know what this C thing was all about, but had no way or knowledge of how to. I didn't really know anybody before I got the 'net last year, so asking someone else was out of the question. Plus, I wouldnt've known what question(s) to ask.
    As I became more proficient with the whole technology thing, I began to go to the local libraries nearby and use their free internet access to look stuff up. But I didn't get the idea to do any research about C, most likely because I didn't have the mental capacity to plan well and my access was once or twice weekly at best. Plus, the only computer I had at home was 66MHz and ran DOS, and I only knew BASIC around that time which I was comfortable and content with, so wasn't looking for a new language. I think I knew about assembly language but didn't pursue it if I did.
    A couple of computer upgrades later, I finally got the 'net at home and began to see the convenience of being able to spontaneously look something up when I wanted to as good, rather than weird. Ideas gradually began to pop into my head that I'd run off and look up, and one day C became one of them. So I did some research on C and finally began to learn what it was: an incomprehensible mess of manually managed memory and low-level trickery. Since I knew a fair bit about assembly language now I decided C was worse than asm (and I had no chance of learning asm back then), and left it at that.
    Being the BASIC coder I was (pun intended), I found the syntax and concepts over my head by several miles. But the fascination never died, and kept poking at me again and again. And I just had to keep forgetting about it.
    I moved on from QuickBASIC, which I'd been using for just about everything, to FreeBASIC, which was in such a beta state when I tried it, I disliked it enough to move on and discovered PHP.
    PHP has been called the BASIC of the 21st century, and I can understand why. There are typically at least 10 ways to do something whether in principle or method, multiple functions do the same or an equivalent task, and overall it just doesn't look like a good language. But beyond all that, PHP made sense to me. As I went along many of the things I expected to perform in a given way performed in said way, which was a huge confidence boost. The model it followed might have been convoluted, but something inside my head "clicked" when I saw PHP, so I liked it, since I could understand it easily.
    But recently, I found myself hitting too many walls. I wanted to get into graphical software development, and none of the graphical extensions PHP had available would work for me. PHP-GTK did work but prevented PHP from outputting anything as an Apache module, without throwing a single error anywhere. PHP-QT wouldn't compile on my system. PHP-TK did compile, but both segfaulted when any tk_* function was called and also exhibited the Apache module issue.
    So I decided then and there that I needed to switch languages.
    The problem was, my current machine happens to be so slow that a GIMP operation that executes in 6 seconds on the lowest generation AMD CPU from 4-5 years ago will execute in 38 seconds on mine. I have no idea why; the machine is, after all, 2.66GHz.
    Although PHP is pretty snappy on my system, I don't know how other languages would fare and don't really want to risk the experiment; I want to switch to a language I know will be as fast as, or faster than, PHP. So I decided that a compiled language would have to be it, since I regarded PHP as the fastest language I knew. I was probably wrong, but whatever.
    So I set my mind to understanding C. I'd asked around online before, and someone took pity on me and explained the basics of C and I did my best to understand them. This was great for a couple of days, but didn't last all that long unfortunately. So I asked around again, dreading their responses, and with good reason too: most of the tutorials I read often left me boggled and flew over my head at one point or another, which didn't help.
    But I got some dreaded tutorial links, and did my best to read them. It took me a couple of weeks to finally convince my brain to understand the point of a language that utilizes variables that doesn't contain any data, but instead references to other variables. I eventually grasped the why, but am still having quite a hard time understanding the how.
    So then, after that initial hurdle, I moved onto other topics. Or rather tried to. I quickly discovered that C interconnects some of its issues so deeply that it's hard to learn one thing at a time, move on and learn the next thing - how I best learn. I don't create paths very well by reading information; I create those paths by staying away from information and letting it slowly process in my mind. But to actually remember it in the first place, it needs to make sense, and C doesn't make sense because things are so interconnected and... we come full circle.
    To be honest, after about a fortnight of trying to understand pointers, I still don't understand them. I've read what is probably the best the web has to offer about pointers. Has it helped? Not really.
    Either the documentation:
    - is too terse and I have to slow down, risking losing interest in what I'm reading
    - skips over vital points or assumes I know Pascal or some other language
    - is hard to understand or is poorly written
    - puts segments in the wrong order, so I don't understand everything something might depend on before I reach that something
    ...and in general I either give up on reading the documentation, give up on C or just cry. I've done the 3rd a few times, the 2nd quite a few times and the 1st pretty much as many times as I've read documentation.
    So what are my issues with C?
    Let me address the two I can think of right now:
    Pointers aren't addressed "simply"; if I declare a pointer to int named x I have to use *x to access what x points to, rather than use *x to get x's location, like one does with non-pointer variables where & is used to get an address. It'd be nice if we used &x to get x's value if x wasn't a pointer and *x to get x's value if x was a pointer, rather than use this convoluted scheme.
    Also, I've heard that it's a common misconception that C handles arrays natively. Elsewhere, I've heard that strings are merely arrays of char. I can understand the 2nd, but what do I do with the 1st?
    I do understand that if I say printf("%d\n", x[1]) I'm effectively saying x++; printf("%d\n", x), but I don't understand how this fully works. For example, let us consider the following code:
    char *filename = "<insert file here>";
    int i;
    struct stat filebuffer;
    int status;
    FILE *handle;
    handle = fopen(filename, "r");
    status = stat(filename, &filebuffer);
    char *buffer = malloc(filebuffer.st_size);
    for (i = 0; i < filebuffer.st_size; i++) buffer[i] = fgetc(handle);
    printf("%s\n", buffer);
    You'll of course notice the array notation. Do I understand why if I replace said notation with something to the effect of...
    buffer++
    buffer = fgetc(handle);
    ...the program segfaults? No. Likewise, I don't understand why the...
    buffer++
    *buffer = fgetc(handle);
    ...in the loop does work, printf("%s"...); causes segfaults and printf("%d"...); does not.
    Another thing I found is that declaring a char *, filling it with data, and then using memcpy on said char *, the program works fine, but if I declare for example char x[1] = "hi"; the compiler will shout at me for not allocating enough arrays. Only while writing this did I realize that the 2nd element is for the null byte.
    Suffice to say that C confuses me. To bits. Although I have written a 500 line program in it (579 to be exact). All said program does is display a message on the screen via Xlib, but I managed to figure out how to make a word wrapping engine using strsep and how to use XDrawPoint XDrawLine to not only create a nice UI but also let me define various UI "styles" which can be loaded at startup.
    Said program uses a very big helping of "if it doesn't work stab it until it does", so not only do I not understand how a lot of it works, it probably wouldn't compile under anything except gcc. Which is from a theory perspective quite a problem, IMHO. Almost every 2nd variable is typecast to this or that type.
    So put simply, every tutorial or introduction to C hasn't made a lot of sense to me. Maybe I learn slowly; I'm hoping it's that, because I can't see anything besides assembly language which would be faster than C. I plan to learn asm after I've mastered the very basics of C, but I may end up having to learn the other way around if I expect to get anywhere.
    Like I said in the title, I have one actual question in this post. So here it is:
    Are there any fun, easy reading tutorials out there that don't visually look like they came out of 1992 and read like http://poignantguide.net/ or http://learnyouahaskell.com/?

    Pointer syntax is extremely unfortunate. The best part:
    char *a; // It's a pointer.
    *a; // It's a character. Good move, guys.
    Also, I've heard that it's a common misconception that C handles arrays natively. Elsewhere, I've heard that strings are merely arrays of char. I can understand the 2nd, but what do I do with the 1st?
    Insofar as C has arrays, C strings are character arrays. C arrays are just a promise that the system won't mess within a certain set of memory addresses. Array syntax is a concise way to calculate and dereference a specific location in memory, relative to an address that you hope is the beginning of some memory you reserved. array[n] = *(array + n), right? Personally, I would have left out the subscript notation entirely. Regardless, any time you choose to use brackets, you can mentally substitute in an explicit addition and dereference there. You're saying, "Give me the number stored at the memory address I have just calculated, which I know by my science holds something I put there intentionally, and not garbage at all."
    One more clarification with regard to pointer arithmetic is necessary: when you add 2 to an int*, the resulting address is actually 2*sizeof(int) bytes after your base address. Same for a double*: 2*sizeof(double).
    I do understand that if I say printf("%d\n", x[1]) I'm effectively saying x++; printf("%d\n", x), but I don't understand how this fully works.
    It's not the same! First of all, in example #2, you're passing a pointer to an int. In example #1, you're passing an integer, since [] dereferences pointers for you. Any time you use those brackets, it's as if you had typed an asterisk yourself. Second, in example #1 you're not messing with x. In example #2 you're incrementing x by four bytes (the likely size of one integer). Doesn't make a difference in this short example, but if x ever gets used again it will be very significant.
    Looks like a counting problem. Arrays are indexed from 0, but sizes are specified from 1 on up. Your "char x[1]" has only index [0]. To hold a two-character string, you'll need at least size three (char x[3]), so that x[0]='h', x[1]='i', x[2]='\0', the null terminator.
    Suffice to say that C confuses me. To bits.
    Any time you get confused by pointers or arrays (which are the same thing), take a step back and think about what's happening in terms of memory addresses. Draw it out on paper if you think you're making a mistake. In some languages you can ignore low-level details like that and write perfectly fine programs, even though you won't be able to optimize them without knowing how your code maps onto the machine. But in C, everything that looks like a high-level feature is just shorthand for setting a few bytes to different numbers, and the abstraction is so leaky that you can't get by without understanding it. Types are just a way for the compiler to catch dumb mistakes (some people believe this is helpful) and to automate some math, like the pointer arithmetic above. In a running program there are no types, so when you're trying to figure out what a program is actually doing, you need to consider what the types are shorthand for.
    If you're having trouble "thinking like a programmer", by which I mean sanity-checking your use of syntax and stepping through a program so you know what it does, you might want to get up to speed in a different language, or by working through a book on algorithms.

  • Phottix Ares won't trigger my off camera 430 ex II when using iPhone EOS remote app!

    I have a Canon 6D, a canon 430ex II and a set of Phottix Ares transmitter and receiver. I have set up my flash off camera and was planning to use the camera’s wifi capability to take a self portrait with my iPhone EOS remote app, but the flash wouldn't fire at all. When I turned off the app and phisically pressed the shutter it worked but never through the app. Then I thought of mounting the 430 directly onto the camera, used the remote app to shoot wirelessly and I was surprised that it worked!!! I coudn't find the logic behind this and I tried to find an answer everywhere with no hope!
    Has anyone gone through tha same experience or have any explanation or solution to this problem? or any alternative solution to get the flash to trigger while shooting wirelessly? thanks.
    [Mod note: Moved to "EOS" because issue seems to be with the EOS App. You'll get more exposure here!]
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    If you are shooting using Live View (through the app) it won't fire the flashes like that.  But if you just use the app to release the shutter and review the pics it will.  It's been awhile since I've used the app, but there's a button or something to go between live view and standard shooting.
    That said, I've read that some cameras can work around this by going into the menu and disabling silent shooting, and then Live View will work with simple triggers.  I've never done it as I don't shoot in live view, but I've seen this discussed a lot.  Not sure if the same can be said for the app, but it's worth a shot (no pun intended).

  • The problems with Logic (as I see them)

    Hello Everyone,
    Please keep in mind that I am writing this with the intention of expressing my frustrations, and what I feel would make Logic a better program. I realize not everyone will agree with the importance of what I say, but I am a firm believer of HAVING THE OPTIONS. Let the users choose what works for them and how they can best accomplish the tasks that they need to with their individual workflow.
    That being said, here is my list of Logic's faults and why I often call Logic "Illogic".
    General:
    * Logic should have a feature to automatically save your song every X number of minutes. Final Cut Pro does this, why doesn't Logic? It should prompt you "Logic can automatically save your project if you save it" (assuming the current file is 'autoload') to remind users that they should create a project name and save their work.
    * There should be a preference option for all windows to open as 'float'. Once upon a time holding option while double clicking parts would open them as a float (though having to hold down option every time in my opinion is an inconvenience, because I personally ALWAYS want my windows open as a float), however.. now in 7.2 that does not seem to work anymore. So, theoretically after you set your prefence to 'always float', then the when you hold option or control and click on a particular window, it will bring that window to the foreground...
    * The loop region at the top of the screen is larger than the time-line ruler tab. This is the #1 annoying thing about logic. so many times, I click on an area of the ruler tab to start playing at a specific section.. and somehow I ACCIDENTALLY click on the loop area... If I could ask for ANYTHING it would be that there is an option to disable LOOPING turning on and off from clicking up there. My 2nd request would be that the ruler tab be re-sizeable so that it can be larger than the loop area. This is especially the case for the matrix window where it default opens up to a sizing where the actual time line is so tiny, and the loop region is HUGE.... Every time I open a matrix window I have to resize this and again the loop area is 2x as big as the timeline area, so I end up wasting screen space just to avoid the annoying loop feature being trued on. My suggestion is, require that the loop button on the transport be the only way to turn on the loop feature (other than key commands), and only when it's turned on can loop points to be set. Why is the loop area so big anyway?!?!
    * Logic should offer a TALK BACK MIC button which will utilize the built-in apple microphone or iSight microphone and allow that to be sent to the audio interface. This would be an extremely useful feature for studio recording setups.
    * Starting logic takes approximately 5 minutes for me. It says "scanning exs24 instruments" for the majority of the time, and I admit my sample library is huge. however, my sample library has not changed in over a year. Why does logic have to continuously scan it??? Can it not make a reference of how many files, compare and if its larger-- then scan???
    Song Loading:
    * When audio files are not found during loading a song, it asks you the first time what you want to do "search", "manual", and "skip"... if you click "skip", and then it finds another missing file, it no longer presents you with the "SKIP" option.. but forces you to either search or skip all.. Let's say you have a project that used 5 audio files that are all missing because you had them on a different hard drive, but have copied the data somewhere else. The first two files it asks for you don't need.. but you know where the 3rd file is.. So your plan is to skip the first two files and then click manually for the 3rd.. but oh.. YOU CAN'T DO THAT! You have to find your first 2 files if you want to even have the option to locate your 3rd file... Unless you are planning to locate the files within the audio window-- but still, Logic should not be so unfriendly.
    Further, If you choose "manual", and what you're looking for isn't where you thought it was-- You realize you actually want to search for it.. So you click cancel and guess what.. It assumes you want to skip it, and so you either have to reload your project again, or deal with this in the audio window. Bottom line is this window should always have "Search", "Manual", "Skip", and "Skip All".
    * When you open another project, Logic DUMPS all of the audio instrument data in memory. This is one of the worst things about logic. If you are working between multiple files-- such as when scoring a film, and you are using different files for different cues, then this becomes a complete nightmare and a waste of your time. Logic should be assessing "What instruments are in common between these two projects"... And utilizing all audio instruments to the best of the machine's memory capacity. There is no reason for Logic to behave like this.. I've had to revert back to previous versions of the same song because some data was different, and I am just trying to visually compare various settings one from the other.. Just clicking from one project's window to the other requires me to have to wait 3-4 minutes while Logic loads all these audio instruments (WHICH ARE IDENTICAL IN BOTH PROJECTS BY THE WAY!!!).. This is just incredibly dumb, and creatively stifling.
    * BUG * -- Mind you, if you have two projects open, and you close one.. Logic begins loading all the audio instruments of the remaining project.. If you close that project as it's loading audio instruments, Logic will crash.
    Matrix Stuff:
    * BUG * If you have a part with lots of notes, and you begin to make a selection and scroll horizontally through all the content until then entire part is covered in the selection... After you release the mouse button and make this selection, quite often many random notes are unselected. This can be demonstrated by watching the following quicktime move:
    http://www.collinatorstudios.com/video/logicbug.mov
    * When you select a single note in the matrix window, it sounds.. This is a GREAT feature... However, when you make a selection of multiple of notes, they all sound at the same time.. This is just plain dumb. It once blew up my speakers... There is NO reason why a multiple selection would need to sound.. It's just dumb.. bad for your speakers, bad for your ears. The rule should be, if selection box = yes, then sound = no... else, sound = yes.
    * When viewing the matrix window while recording, all note events disappear until after recording stops. This is highly annoying (and illogical) as it causes confusion if you are relying on watching the note events in that part to know where you are supposed to come in.
    * The grid cannot be set to divisions other than 2 or 3. Musicians use 5 and 7!!! And also, can logic please offer an option to display the grid as NOTE symbols... It is much more musician friendly to see a 16th note with a 3 over it than "24". 24 means nothing to me as a musician.
    * Quantizing should allow custom input for tuplets.. So that users can quantize odd figures such as 13:4 for example.
    * If you move the song locator to a specific time location in the arrange window, and then double click a part to open it in the matrix window, the window is not opened to the locator's position. Thus causing annoyance and confusion as far as what the user is even looking at.
    * During horizontal scrolling of the window, the locator temporarily disappears, making it difficult to find where the locator is-- which usually is a marker for us to know what we are trying to find-- ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU OPEN A WINDOW AND IT'S NOT EVEN DISPLAYING THE SONG LOCATOR'S POSITION!!!
    * If you have two parts on the same arrange track, adjacent to each other and you enter the matrix window of the first part.. (assuming the link/chain icon is lit) When you scroll to the end of the note data, logic automatically takes you to the next part... The problem with this as it is, is that it does not take you to the FIRST note event of the text part, but rather continues to align the song locater with where ever it previously was (so you end up viewing somewhere further down in the next part).. To clarify, say you have a part what begins at MM-7 and ends at MM-14, the 2nd part begins at MM-15 and ends at MM-22.. If you begin scrolling the song locator past measure 15, then suddenly you see measure 22. When you really should be seeing measure 15. This is confusing and weird.
    * Every time you enter the matrix window of a part, the chain/link button is on. For me, this is incredibly annoying. There should be a way to set this so that the button's default is OFF...
    * When you move the mouse around the matrix window, whatever pitch corresponds to the vertical location of the mouse--- that particular key of the piano keyboard on the left side of the window should highlight so you could clearly see what note you are hovering over.. Logic tries to help with this by offering things like contrast options for C D E, but this clearly would be much more helpful.
    * With the velocity tool you can (MOST OFTEN ON ACCIDENT) double click on empty space in the window and cause all note events in all parts to appear on the screen-- Yet once you do this, you can't double click on a particular part's note to only display that part again. You have to switch to the arrow tool to do this. This is inconsistent and ILLOGICAL...
    ON A SIDE NOTE: PLEASE ENABLE A FUNCTION TO DISABLE THIS "ALL NOTES OF ALL PARTS APPEAR" when double clicking on empty space feature! I want NOTHING to happen when I double click within the matrix window... Make it a button within the window or just an option in the drop down menu only. * BY THE WAY * When you DO double click the background of the matrix window and multiple parts appear.. If you move notes of one part to match it up with other, it is incredibly slow. there is a 1-2 second pause each time you move a note move.. My g5 fan goes on each time I do this.. I'm sorry, there shouldn't be anything too CPU intensive to accomplish this simple task!!! I am only viewing 2 parts at the same time and it's slowing down my cpu...
    * Occasionally when I adjust note lengths, I accidentally double click on an actual note.. This opens the event list editor, and there is an intermittent bug where this note sounds-- and for some reason when the event list opens, the note sounds on top of itself a million times, so the result is a super loud flanged note which again, almost blows up my speakers and hurts my ears... PERSONALLY, I would like an option that DISABLES the note event list from opening by double clicking. Preferences currently has "double clicking a midi region opens: <selectable>"--- why not also have "double clicking a NOTE in matrix window does: <selectable>"-- and please allow "DO NOTHING" to be one of the options.
    * Why does the finger tool only change the end position of the note event??? Should this not be replaced with the bracket tool which appears automatically when using the arrow tool on closely zoomed in notes? This finger tool seems like an outdated old logic feature which has been replaced and improved upon. What would be nice is to have this bracket tool where we can be assured we are altering note start and end positions without moving things.
    * In the hyper-draw >> note velocity section--- This is highly annoying to work with... It's far from user friendly. first of all, to move a note's velocity position, you have to click on the "ball".. if you click on the line, it does nothing.. Because the ball is so small to begin with, quite often the user is going to miss the ball and somehow begin to "START LINE"-- Which is weird because it's activated by holding the mouse button down briefly. There really should be a "line tool" for this, because "START LINE" is too easily accidentally activated-- this is frustrating for the user. Most important though, these 'velocity markings' should be adjustable by clicking on the line as well-- not just the ball.. there should be a 2-3% area around each ball/line which logic will recognize as part of the ball/line so that it can easily be moved. I also feel that there should be some specific features for this section, such as a way to select multiple note velocities and apply a random pattern to them, or apply a logarithmic curve to the line tool. Yes, you can accomplish this stuff somewhat with the transform tool-- but this way would be more user friendly, and allow a lot more creative flow.
    Event list/Tempo list:
    * When one event is selected, by moving down X number, holding shift+clicking SHOULD select all events between those two points. However, the shift key for some reason acts as the OPTION key does in the finder-- (meaning it will only add one additional selection at a time).. This is highly inconsistent with the actual behavior of a Mac... Open a finder window and hold shift and click on items that are not vertically next to each other and a group is selected... Now do it in logic, and it causes GREAT frustration and annoyance. What happens if you have a million note events that you want to erase? You have to go page by page and click with shift on each one?? Or drag a selection and wait for logic to scroll you to where you want to go?????????? No thanks.
    Arrange stuff:
    * "REGIONAL CONTENT" (meaning the visual representation of note events) does not accurately depict the event data as note lengths cannot be visually identified. Everything shows up as a generic quarter note... My #1 suggestion is that regional content should be customizable so that you can view it in a miniature matrix data style. The biggest problem for me is that I cannot see where my notes end-- I can only see where they start, this makes it very difficult to identify what I am looking at.
    * Track automation data should only be inputable by the pencil tool. I cannot mention how many times automation data has accidentally altered when using the arrow tool. The pencil tool should allow you to raise and lower the lines reflecting automation data... What is the point using the pencil tool for automation if it's only function is to create "points" yet you can also create points with the arrow tool..??? Pencil tool should act as the arrow tool does in the sense that it raises or lowers automation data.
    * Recording preferences do not offer the option to automatically merge new part with existing part when a region is NOT selected. How annoying is it to have to select a part every time you want to record something just so it will be included in that original part!
    * Ruler at the top of the screen should also give an option for tuplets. 5, 7, etc.
    * When in record mode, if you click on the ruler to another time position, all audio instruments cut out and it takes approximately 3-4 seconds before tracks begin playing audio. This becomes very annoying if you are trying to do a pick up and want to just start 1 measure before hand.
    * There should be a way to EASILY (without having to cable two tracks together in the environment) temporarily link multiple tracks together so that automation data will be duplicated. So theoretically you can link 3-4 tracks together, and by adding automation data to one, you are adding it to all 4.
    * If a part is soloed, and you hit record. The part stops being soloed and you can no longer hear it. This makes it impossible to record a pick up on a soloed track unless it's locked, but it shouldn't need to be locked.
    * When you are zoomed in tightly, and you are trying to align notes within two parts on different tracks (meaning using the PSEUDO NOTATION DATA that appears in the part to align), there needs to be a VERTICAL line that snaps to the note closest to the mouse cursor. When trying to do this in parts that are a far vertical distance apart, it becomes VERY difficult to eye this alignment. Logic does this with automation data.. but for some reason they left it out for actual part alignment...
    * There should be a way to force the downbeat of a measure to occur at any given moment... What I mean by this, is composing for film is an absolute PAIN in Logic. Scenes, last for odd amounts of time, and Logic's reference manual claims that you can solve this by using various tempo tricks, however it is ineffective for the most part. What Logic needs is the ability where you can click on a drop down menu item within the arrange window and FORCE that where ever the song locator is, the rest of the measure is eliminated and a new measure downbeat occurs right there. This will allow you to always have new scenes on the downbeat of a measure without having to mess with your tempo and meter.
    Hyper Edit Window:
    * I can't even begin to comment on this... The hyper edit window is one of the worst things I have ever seen in a music/audio program. It is a horrible interface, you can't get it to do anything correctly without messing everything up. This thing needs a complete overhaul... I mean, just try to create a simple crescendo with note velocity and it will take you all night.. Try to add pitch bend data, and it adds note velocity data as well.. It's a total nightmare, and I would love to hear someone's practical application of this window.
    Score Window:
    * The method that the song position locator moves along with the notation is very strange. It is not at all how a person's eyes function when reading music. A much more logical approach to this would be for a transparent colored block of some type to highlight an entire measure, and each note head will glow as it sounds. The current way is so strange, it speeds up and slows down-- makes absolutely no sense, and it is more disruptive than anything.
    * When the Hyper Draw > note velocity area is exposed, if you use the velocity tool to increase/decrease a particular note's volume, the data in the hyper draw window does not update in real-time as you use the velocity tool. This behavior is inconsistent with the matrix > hyper draw's note velocity section-- where as in that area, the velocity ball/lines do update in realtime.
    EXS24:
    * when you are in many levels of subdirectories and you are auditioning instruments, it becomes very time consuming and annoying to have to continually trace through all the subdirectory paths. There should be a feature directly under the load instrument window that takes you to the subdirectory of the current instrument.
    * Seems when SONG SETTING > MIDI > "chase" is turned on... When starting sequences using audio instruments, (I am using a harp sample within the exs24), there is a latency hiccup upon starting, which is very disruptive when trying to listen to a short isolated moment in a composition. And I do want to chase note events in general-- but this present situation makes it difficult for me to work. I would suggest that you can specify tracks to exclude chasing.. Or fix the latency hiccup issue.
    Thank you.

    http://collinatorstudios.com

    this is excellent patrick. can you number your points so that the thread can be discussed?
    1. yes
    2. ok
    3. great idea
    4. even better idea. you could set something up with aggreagate device i suppose but it would be better to have the feature to hand.
    5. you need to look into your project manager prefs. scan the paths and the links to the audio files will be saved meaning they will load up in a fraction of the time.
    6. yes this is nuts. you can skip all and sort it out with PM but then you shouldn't have to.
    7. this exists already. perhaps it ought to be a default but you need to set your esx prefs to 'keep common samples in memeory when switching songs'. then it will do just as you wish it to. you can also use the au lab in the devlopers kit which will allow you to load in au units etc seperately from logic, which logic can then access. this is a good way of getting around the 4 GB memory limit with logic too.
    8. ok, don't know about this bug.
    9. yep happens here too.
    10. doesn't worry me this one. you can turn off midi out.
    11. yes this is silly.
    12. well, i think this is something we can get used to. i am a musician and i am used to seeing '24'.
    13. you can already set up groove templates to allow for quantizing irrational tuplets. i do it all the time. i would like to see step input for irrational tuplets though.
    14. yes this is silly. the button for the KC 'content catch' is getting very worn out.
    15. ok.
    16. not sure i understand this one.
    17. yes this drives me nuts too. i have to lock screensets to get this to stay off.
    18. you can use KCs for 'go into/out of sequence' - but yeah.
    19. ok
    20. there are a couple of features that use old technology that cause hangs and poor performance. score is a good example of that. maybe the matrix is too. the score is being updated we assume with newer technology maybe the matrix will too.
    21. there are probably better ways of adjusting velocity than using matrix or hperdraw velocity. have you tried holding control-option and click dragging a note in score?
    22. as i pointed out in 20, this is an old feature. you could change things to be consistent with modern macs and annoy long term users such as myself, or leave them and let them be inconsistent to confuse newbies. i think depending on what it is we oldies could upgrade our work habits.
    23. this one doesn't worry me so much.
    24. good point (no pun intended).
    25. well, i find the opposite - that merging new parts to objects i have accidentally selected to be annoying. perhaps more detailed prefs?
    26. yep.
    27. this will be down to your audio settings. you can improve this lag but it will be dependant on the capabilities of your system.
    28. i don't know why this feature doesn't work in logic. it is supposed to have ti already and i just don't understand why it doesn't. maybe it will be fixed in the next upgrade.
    29. agreed.
    30. ok - i have other work flows for this but it would be nice.
    31. i don't agree that logic is a pain to score with to film, i do it nearly everyday. but you are discribing an interesting feature which might be worth discussing more. i think you might find yourself getting alarming and unmiscal results doing this that will end up having to be sorted out the conventional way. but its a good idea.
    32. oh yes.
    33. yeah - this could be improved.
    34. ok, well i wouldn't go about it this way, but yeah there is generally sticky spots with regards to updating of information al around logic.
    25. very very good idea.
    26. there are lots of problems with the chase function. very annoying. i certainly agree with this.
    in general, some of these could well be done as their own threads. some of the missing functionality may exist. if you can confirm a bug then you are on stronger ground when you submit feedback. but this list is full of fantastic ideas.
