Moving vs. copying (files/folders)

I have a single hard drive, two Users. I am launched into my main/Admin user. When a move some folders to the desktop they copy... others just move. How can that be? (Snow Leopard).

Either they're on a different partition than the desktop, or you don't have write access to the folder containing those that copy. Press the Command key when dragging them.

  • Not able to copying files/folders from one Document Library to another Document Library using Open with Browser functionality

    Hi All,
We have SharePoint Production server 2013 where users are complaining that they are not able to copy or move files from one document library to another document library using “Open with Explorer” functionality.
We tried to activate publishing features on production server but it did not work. We users reported following errors:
Copying files from one document library to another document library:
Tried to map the document libraries and still not get the error to copy files:
In our UAT environment we are able to copy and move folders from using “Open with Explorer” though.
We have tried to simulate in the UAT environment but could not reproduce the production environment.
Any pointers about this issue would be highly appertained.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi John and all,
One the newly created web applications that we created few days back and navigated to document library, clicked on “Open with Explorer”, we get this error.
We're having a problem opening this location in file explorer. Add this website to your trusted and try again.
We added to the trusted site in Internet Explorer for this web application, cleared the cache and open the site with same document library but still get the same above error.
However, another existing web application (In same the Farm) that we are troubleshooting at the moment, we are able click on “Open with Explorer”,  login in credentials opens and we entered the details we are able to open the document
library and tried to follow these steps:
From Windows Explorer (using with Open with Explorer), tried to copy or move a files to
    source document library.
From Windows Explorer moved this file to another destination document library and we got this error.
What we have to achieve is users should be able to copy files and folders using
Open with Explorer functionality. We don’t know why Open with Explorer
functionality not work working for our environment.
    Are we doing something wrong?
We have referred to following websites.
we hope concepts of copying / Moving files are similar as SharePoint 2010. Our production environment is SharePoint 2013.

I am new on this Mac amazing world, so, I really need your help.
    Thanks,
    Andy
p.s. Sorry for my English, is not my native language..

    Hi Andy
Try the below folder action script, as the code stands it will not replace any folders/files in "B" if they are the same uncomment the "with replacing" to replace folders, files that are the same in "B".
Also as the code stands it will leave the origional copy in folder "A"
You will need to save the code to:
    Macintosh HD:Library:Scripts:Folder Action Scripts:
and attach it to folder "A" , making sure to enable folder action scripts.
on adding folder items to thefolder after receiving theseItems
    tell application "Finder"
duplicate theseItems to folder "Macintosh HD:Users:Andy:Desktop:B:"--with replacing

  • Moving or Copying Files and Folders on the Desktop.

Hi All, I have come across this before and cannot recall how I got around it. I have copied some folders from an external FW drive onto the desktop of my iMac. I create a new folder on the desktop to move these folders into. Without holding down the option key or any key, the Finder copies them instead of what it should be doing by moving them. It is a pain!!! What is making the Finder copy rather than just move these folders even though they are on the same volume? The owner of the folders and the logged in user on the iMac is the same. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Barbara, Sorry but I don't think you understand my issue.
    Let me clarify.....
I have copied a folder from my External Firewire drive to my desktop.
I have created a new folder on my desktop.
When I attempt to move the copied folder which is already on the desktop to the new folder which is also on the desktop, a + sign appears on my cursor. I don't want to copy it to the new folder, I just want to move it into it. This is all happening on the same volume and happens only with the folder. Any files inside this folder can be moved as per normal.
    Hope this is clearer.....

  • Copying files folders display different sizes

I'm pretty sure I'm not crazy, but isn't it true that when you copy files from one drive to another, the sizes as reported in the Finder may not always be equal even though the actual files may be exactly the same. Nothing fancy here, just a manual drag and drop of about 20 folders with many files in each. In all cases, one drive is displaying consistently smaller folder sizes than the other by <1% and as much as 30%. Should I worry or is this just one of those oddities of sectors and formatting and so on?

It can vary due to File Allocation Block sizes, but 30 % would either mean a really small file... 1,025 bytes requiring 2 1,024 size block & may report 2048 on one, or one drive is not HFS+, like perhaps FAT32, in which case whole Forks can get lost.
Or are you talking about the Get info Window that reports in Bytes for size?

  • How can I copy file/folders from and to hard drives? How can I have two or more windows of explorer so that I can drag and drop from one hard drive to another?

    Hi,
I am a new customer (purchased last week) of MacBookPro (latest) and its my first ever Apple laptop.
I am almost lost to find the operating tools.
    1. How can I copy files from hard drive to computer and vis-a-versa?
    2. Only can browse one but how can I have two or more browses at the same time like in MS windows?
    3. No right click works on track pad?
    4. Is there application/ program compatible to MS office? If so how much and how can I purchase?
    5. Is there AutoCAD program that is compatible to MS Window AutoCAD? and if yes how much and how can I purchase?
I will very much appreciate if you could email me the with the solution/answers please.

    1) For some reason this happens once in a while with FAT32 enabled external harddrives. I have no idea why this happens but it most easily solved by reformatting the drive. First make sure you've copied everything from the external drive to your internal harddrive. You've done this earlier so I assume you know how to do this.
Now the reformatting part. Open Finder and go to Applications. Look for the folder called "Utilities". Click on it. In it you find a program called "Disk Utility". Click on it. Now look for the external drive. You probably see two entries for the disk. Click on the one that contains the name of the drive NOT the one that describes the disk (Like for example 320.07 GB Samsung S2 Portable Media).
Now you see four tabs in the righthand part of the window. They're called "First Aid", "Erase", "RAID" and "Restore". Click on "Erase". This opens the tab with (amongst others) a dropdownbox (Format) and a textbox (Name) . In the dropdownbox select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Take note! This selection disables usage of the drive with Windows PC's. If your goal is to share the drive with Windows PC's select the MS-DOS FAT option.
Enter a label for the drive in the textbox Name. Now click on the button "Erase". This will format the drive.
Now when it's done you can copy back all the items you've copied to your internal harddrive earlier.
    2) Opening two windows like Explorer on Windows is opening two Finder windows on the Mac. Simply click on the background. In the menubar you items like 'Finder", "File", "Edit", "View", et cetera. Click on "File" and "New Finder Window". Do this two times. Alternatively you can click on the background and press CMD-N two times.
    3) You can right click on the trackpad. This however depends on if you've enabled the feature in System Preferences. In the topmenubar click on the Apple icon and select "System Preferences". Now look for Trackpad in Hardware. Click on it. You see three tabs with the names "Point & Click", "Scroll & Zoom" and "More Gestures". Select "Point & Click" and look for "Secondary Click'. Make sure it is checked and make sure it has written "Click or tap with two fingers" written beneath "Secondary Click". When you're done exit System Preferences. Now select the background and tap with two fingers on the trackpad. This should open the contextuel menu with options like "New Folder", "Get Info" et cetera.

  • Moving and copying files in Bridge v4.0.4.2

CS5 Bridge crashes whenenver I try to move or copy files. It doesn't matter if I drag&drop or use copy/paste.
I have tried to correct using advice from a previous query made a couple of years ago but it does not improve the situation.
I am using Windows 7 with bags of memory.

Mainly I don't know where to find the various things mentioned.
eg how do I do a ful system integrity check?
Perhaps I need to take the whole shebang to the shop and see if they can sort it out.
I can say that I have a fairly extensive range of software on the machine and it is only Bridge which is giving me trouble.
It would help if we had a better idea of what drives/volumes you have on your computer, and how they are connected. For example: do you have any external hard drives? Do you have any network drives? Are your SATA drivers up-to-date?
It's fairly straightforward to check your disk integrity: open Windows Explorer, click Computer, and right click a drive, selecting Properties from the bottom of the list; on the Tools tab, click Check Now, then Start. Do this for every drive.
Try disconnecting your computer from the network and disabling your anti-virus software to see if that is causing your problem.
It is always worth updating graphics drivers, although it sound unlikely this is your problem. Maybe your system has driver update software?
You could ask the shop to help, but it might be wise to narrow down the problem first, or they could potentially spend hours looking at it.
The Event Viewer might be a good place to look too, look for red and yellow warnings in the Windows System and Application logs. Find Event Viewer by typing it into Start menu Search box.

  • Moving or copying files from my Mac to my external NTFS drive.

I use Boot-camp on my MacBook and use it as both a PC and a MAC. Because of space issues I need to use an external drive for storage and because a lot of my files are over 4g I can only use NTFS as a formatting option.
My problem is I can't copy or move anything from my Mac to the drive, which is really annoying. With Itunes for instance I read all my music from the drive (which works fine) but I can't download anything using Itunes now because it won't write to the drive.
Surely this is only a permission thing with Mac that be altered - Can anyone help?

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
it is not a permission issue you experience.
FAT32 is the only file system, that both OSX and Windows can read and write to without additional help.
NTFS is a modern file system for Windows, but OSX can only read from it.
For write access from OSX you can use either NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/ or buy Paragons NTFS for Mac http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/
OSX uses Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as file system, which Windows can't see nor use without the help of MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/
Since FAT32 is no option for you, because of the implemented singel-file size limitation of 4GB, I personally would propose NTFS in combination with NTFS-3G or Paragon.
    Hope it helps

  • Can't copy files to hard disk

I have been having trouble copying/moving files to an external hard drive from my Macbook Air 3,2. I have moved and copied files from the MacBook Air many times to the external hard disk but this time I am having a lot of trouble.
I tried to move 2 movie files but it was taking an incredibly long time. So I clicked the "x" to cancel the transfer. However, it didn't stop it straightaway. The transfer just remained in limbo. Then I got a message saying something about how I didn't disconnect the hard disk properly and the hard disk just seemed to have disconnected itself from my computer even though I didn't eject it.
Then it caused problems for my MacBook Air. When I went to check on the disk in Utilities, it told me I had to use the installation disk to start it up. Other strange things happened like my desktop picture just disappeared and suddenly I had an extra 10GB on my hard drive.
I repaired the disk successfully using the installation thumb USB drive.
(I also repaired the external hard disk).
But I am having the same problem again when I try to move files onto the hard disk. It doesn't seem to work, as it's incredibly slow and when I cancel it, it says I ejected the hard disk wrongly. And the drive does not appear in the Finder Window.
I don't know why this is happening to me. I repaired the MacBook Air HD and I also repaired the external disk and I can't copy movie files onto the hard disk. I have enough space and both disks are Mac Ext Journal formatted. I copied lots of movies the other day (about three days ago and last night) onto the hard disk without any problems.
I really need to move the movies from my computer as I will runn out of disk space on the computer soon (I have about 12 GB left right now).
I tried copying a jpg picture as a test, and it copied it OK but it took a long time. Much longer than normal.
I got an error message just now:
The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Elechxxxxxxxxxx.mp4” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)
I never got this sort of error message before but now I am getting this message today several times when I try and copy the movies. I don't think it's the files themselves because I copied the same sort of movie files last night without any problem.
And as I said, the jpg file took a really long time to copy, like 2 minutes even though it's only a very small file.

This is not about saving the data on the external drive but I found this information to be helpful in case people have problems ejecting a drive:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1322931
    I threw the following:
    sudo umount -vf /dev/disk1s1
and the drive umounted. -v is verbose, just in case there were any errors thrown I wanted to know, and -f is force umount, which forces the drive to unmount. Check 'man umount' from terminal to see more info on these.
After doing this a couple times (I was doing some testing with some other things to find a faster solution than having to open terminal and umount) it just started umounting correctly. I have no idea why, but it did. So just keep that command in mind, just in case.
    Gryyphyn, out.
This may prevent the drive from being damaged by incorrect ejection. Because I could not eject the drive using force eject, restarting the computer etc, I unplugged the drive, which damaged the hardware of the drive.
If I had known about the command window method, I might have  been able to avoid all these problems now that I have with a damaged drive and trying to rescue the data on that drive.
That being said, I think Apple should try and resolve this problem they have with users not being able to eject drives. It seems to be a VERY common problem, and has nothing to do with users' negligence but to do with a systemic fault of Apple's.

  • Copying files need "permission" to be transferred?

Alright so I lost one macbook but all my files were backed up.  When I go to retrieve them with a new macbook I can see all of them (their HD movies about 120) my plan was to plug the laptop into the time machine for a fast transfer of the hd movies to the macbook itself.  That works and I can see all 120 movies.
Next I plug the laptop into a windows computer and share the folder with all the movies so the windows computer can copy them...Not to long into the copy process the movies a majority can't be copied and I have to skip them while others are being transfered because I "need permission from (laptops name then few random looking numbers/letters)"
Only 44 of the 120 movies were transfered sucessfully to the windows computer.
I need help please, thanks guys!

When you copy files from a TM to a different computer from the original the file permissions can be messed up.. there are several ways to fix it.. the simplest I found was to simply copy the files from one location to another .. a separate partition or drive would be better.. even back to the TC as a file.. and let the windows computer then pick it up from there.. If the files were purchased then the copyright may stop you copying. Or at least opening it.. the movies that you cannot copy.. can you actually open and play them on the Mac??
I found pondini's knowledge base enourmously helpful doing this stuff.
    http://pondini.org/TM/5.html
Actually there is s whole lot in the FAQ about recovery.. but disk permission is also there.
I have copied corrupted backup to another location and been able to recover files from it. It was slow and painful operation but it did work.
Even if the first copy fails .. have another try.. and try moving the copied files back to the TC into a directory created for them.. make sure you don't have users set on the TC and open guest access so the windows computer can copy them.

  • Deleteing files/folders from network drive

I have a USB drive connected in to my Airport Extreme and I have conifgured user level access accounts for this. The four the iMac G4, iMac G5, iBook and Powerbook are all able to copy and delete files/folders with no problems. My Windows Vista machine is able to copy files/folders but I am only able to delete folders when they contain no files or sub-folders - sadly I do not have access to the full message but it is related to not having the correct permissions.
The USB drive is Mac OS X Extended format as a Fat 32 format drive did not appear on the network (this was before the recent Airport update though).
Has anyone else encountered this problem and if so - do you know of a way around it?

    Guess it's just me
    Any ideas?

  • Copying files from Windows rips out group permissions

    Hi there all,
Having some problems with group permissions being removed from files when data is copied from a Windows OS.
We currently have a network of Macs that are tied to a AD/OD structure.
We have also set a custom umask for each mac defining 002 as the permissions to be written to files.
However, when we connect to a Windows file share using the smb:// protocol and copy files/folders across to the Mac environment the umask permissions are not written correctly.
The User is given full control and the Everyone group is denied access. However, no group permissions are written at all.
We have tried altering the smb.conf file to no effect.
Could anybody shed some light on this annoying problem?
    Many thanks

You have to install this version of samba as Apple have made a complete hash of implementing their own... Another massive fail from the worlds favourite consumer electrics company... Listen to the pro users leaving in droves...

  • Moving library to external hard drive and get the error "Copying files failed. The disk could not be read from or written to"

    Hello,
I'm moving my library to an external hard drive.
I've made sure to use the 'Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized' option when pointing to the new library location.
I select 'File'->'Library'->'Organize Library', I select to 'Consolidate Files', click 'OK' and get ther error message "Copying files failed. The disk could not be read from or written to".
I've read elsewhere that there may be a corrupted file that I need to sequester somehow and perhaps add it back however I'm not certain how I can locate that file because the status window doesn't indicate which file it's attempting to transfer when the error appears.
    Any tips?
    Thank you,
    Greg H
    iTunes 10.6.3

    OK I figured it out!
It was a dodgy file....I sorted the file folders by date, and as it turned out within the "compilations" folder there was a CD where only about half the tracks seemed to have been copied over. Could not have identified this simply from the time indicated on the finder folder sort, because there were several CDs copied over in the that same minute.
I went back to the original itunes folder, deleted all the files from that CD in itunes, then also deleted all those files from the original disk and the target disk.
Tried the "consolidate library" again, and it completed nicely. 200megs of music and videos.
Very happy to solve this problem after 3 weeks.

  • Error message: File can't be opened right now because it's being used by another task, such as moving or copying an item or emptying the Trash. Try again when the current task is complete.

I recently transferred some data from my external hard drive to my desktop, but there was an error transferring some of the files and it couldn't respond, and eventually i simply removed the external hard drive. However, the folder/files are still on my desktop, and when i try to move them or delete them, this error message appears:
“-folder/file name-” can’t be opened right now because it’s being used by another task, such as moving or copying an item or emptying the Trash. Try again when the current task is complete.
Since I removed the external hard drive before the files were finished transferring, there is no way for the current task to be completed. How can I resolve this and delete the folders/files from my desktop?

I just managed to resolve this by going to the apple sign in the top left, choosing force quit (or you could do option+command+esc), then i chose finder, and i clicked relaunch. After relaunching finder, the error message doesn't appear anymore, and I could move these files/folders, and delete them just fine.
Hope this will help other people who encounter similar problems in the future!

  • Bridge CS3 now crashes when moving/copying files

    As the title says.
A few days ago Bridge started freezing and I dumped the preference files from the user Library, the computer's Library and also the one in the "Save preferences" folder. Now it's giving me problems when moving/copying files with the 'Move to" and "Copy to" commands on the File menu. It works fine when I use one of the options on the "Recent Folders" list, but when I want to select a folder using the "Choose Folder" option, it just crashes.

    Hi Robert,
I'm a developer from Br team. Thanks for reporting Br. problems.
It seems like a memory issue. Please try this to help us identify the root cause:
    1. Disable all startup scripts (Edit->Preferences->Startup Scripts->Disable All), then restart Br.
    2. When Br is running, kill "SwitchBoard" process in task manager.
    3. When do Copy&Move operations, don't use Drag&Drop, try to use "Move To / Copy To" menu. (A known issue of Bridge, should be fixed in later versions)
    Does the crash still happens?
    Thanks very much!
