Moving win 8.1 to msata ssd on U310 touch

Hi all;
Just upgraded the 24GB msata to a 120 GB msata and I'm having trouble cloning the hard drive over to the ssd with Clonezilla. The plan is to move the OS to the msata ssd and wiping the original hard dirve and using it for back-up and storage. The BIOS is current set to AHCI with Lagency OS support active but trying UEFI first. I've done this before with win 7 systems; but this is my first foray into win 8.1 w/UEFI. The system does reconize and access the 120 GB Crucial M500 msata disk; it just won't mirror the 8, win-8 partitions. I reinstalled the HD and rebooted the system; to ensure I didn't mess something up and everything seems to be working; though on the slow hard drive.
Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.
PS. I did boot from the USB drive with Clonzillia on it and used the drive to drive cloning option
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Here is what I did for all the issues.
I had installed Ubuntu in this machine. Forgot the steps I did to install Ubuntu. Later I decided to upgrade the machine with 8 GB memory and 250 GB samsung EVO 480 mSATA.  The problem was moving win 8 to mSATA.
The bios had many boot entries
1. Windows Boot manager
2. HDD western Digital
3. Ubuntu
and many more.
By the way the, machine (with prebuilt win8) has SATA mode in ACHI, Boot mode in UEFI and Secure Boot Enabled and USB boot enabled by default. you can disable secure boot by first setting admin password.
I tried cloning HDD to SSD using Acronis True Image Western Digital version (Its free). But it could not clone rather it added an entry "Acronis loader" in Bios and there is no any way to remove bios entries or at least I could not find the way to remove.
during linux install, I had resized the win OS partition to create Ubuntu partition. I had no issue with the bios at that time. But when I deleted the linux partition, I no longer could access the bios again until I reflashed with bios file given here.  https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/U310-can-no-longer-access-bios/td-p/896225...      It really works for U310 touch.
Sorry for my whole story. you probably dont need to bother with the things I said above. Now below is what I did to install windows 8 on mSATA
A) Created UEFI bootable USB Win 8 install drive
I had win8 pro retail DVD image with serial Key. But in fact, you don't need the serial key. If you find win 8 installation DVD any way, it works because the win8 key is burned in your system Bios (Probably)
1.  Insert USB drive ( 8GB or more, probably 4 gb works But I had 8)
2.  make it UEFI bootable
go to cmd (command prompt)
diskpart
list disk
select disk # (# is disk number of USB drive)
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format quick fs=fat32
assign
exit
exit
Now insert win8 installation dvd / mount win8 iso image
go to cmd (command prompt again) and copy the win8 installation files to USB
xcopy d:\* f:\ /s /e
here d is win8 dvd/ win 8 iso drive letter and f is USB drive letter
once the copy process finishes,
exit
turn off the computer. remove the regular HDD. If you don't remove HDD, the new installation will add another boot menu for windows that is already in your HDD.
3. Insert newly created bootable USB drive
4. press the NOVO button(One key recovery button), go to bios setup, change the first boot device to USB, disable secure boot. you dont need to change UEFI boot and ACHI SATA operation.
5. save and exit.
Now your computer boots from the USB drive you created. The installation process starts. select clean install, select mSATA drive.  and wait for the installation to finish. The installation will never ask you to enter the win 8 serial key. as you complete the installation, the win 8 will automatically be activated without all the bloatwares Lenovo ships with their laptop.  In my case, I had win8 pro retail DVD, but the install activated Win8 only.
Delete the win OS partition of HDD but dont delete its recovery partitions in case If you need the recovery in future.
Note: The Recovery  function of NOVO button is now useless. But you can use NOVO button for boot selection and bios setup. In fact, If you have any windows8 installation DVD/image ( you dont need serial key) , the recovery partition of  your laptop is virutally useless as you can always recover your windows by 10 minute installation rather than waiting hours for recovery from recovery partition.
Hope this helps.

    Hi, guys
If you whant to use the msata drive as the 2nd drive in the system you've to initialize it.
For making it bootable the are seveal methods. I've used the next two:
    1. I used Intel Data Migration Software tool (based on Acronis technology) to transfer all image from the stock hdd to the new Intel SSD drive 320 Series (120 gb). At this moment the new drive was plased into the external usb box. Then I've booted from the new drive and resized the partitions using the Disk Management applet.
    2. The second method is to use the factory recovery media (USB stick in my case). I did that for the new msata SSD drive (non Intel 128 gb). Insert the new drive, boot from the usb stick, fully recover, reboot into the bios setup, change the boot priority for the new drive, reboot from the new drive, resize the partitions and delete the Lenovo_recovery partition on the new drive. I'm sure the cloning tool will work for msata too.
No actions were carried out with the SSD drives (I mean initializing, partioning...) before data migrating in both cases.

  • U310 touch new 120gb msata win 8.1

I bought a 120 GB msata and I'm planning to clone the HD with win 8.1 to the new msata drive and use the hard disk for storage.
Can you give an outline of what I need to do?
I tried to move the win 8.1 to the new msata on another u310 (non-touch) and now I can not access the bios.
    Thanks

    Hello,
I have a U410 Touch (which is very similar to the U310, I believe), and here's what I did with mine:
Ordered factory recovery media from Lenovo.
Opened U410 to remove 1TB HDD and 24GB mSATA SSD.
    Installed 120GB mSATA SSD
Powered up, entered BIOS, and changed UEFI option to Legacy/BIOS/CSM option (I forget the exact name)
Installed Windows 8 using recovery media and external USB DVD±RW disc drive
Downloaded Windows 8.1 ISO from MSDN and extracted that to a 8GB USB flash drive
Ran Setup (filename: SETUP.EXE) from USB flash drive to install Windows 8.1
At that point, I was up and running.  For some reason, the Windows 8.1 installer didn't like the Product ID Key that came with the system's Windows 8.0 installation, so I temporarily entered one of my MSDN license keys while installing it.  Afterwards, I used the Software Licensing Manager (filename: SLMGR.VBS) with the /IPK option reinsert the Lenovo product ID key.  You can look up yours up before installing Windows 8.1 with a utility like Belarc Advisor or Nirsoft Produkey.

  • Reinstall Win 8.1 on new SSD

    Hi,
This is for my GS70 2PE with one 1Tb HDD.
I have installed a new SSD mSATA Crucial 256Gb.
I would like to have it as Primary Disk and use the 1Tb as Secondary Disk.
I thought it would be possible to clone my HDD to the new SSD mSATA and tell the Bios to use the SSD as Primary Disk but I haven´t managed and it doesn't seem possible.
It looks like I will have to reinstall Win 8.1 on the SSD and do a restore.
Am I right or am I wrong.
    regards,

I agree wit Dblkk make a fresh installation are the best
About boot on USB disk, an easy way that go to bios ae to press F11 key when MSI logo are show for get the boot menu and sthe USB/DVD (vase on system you want use). Note that the USB key/DVD should be connected/insert inside ODD before you turn on the NB ormaybe you can't boot on because UEFI system and then you need to reboot.
If you really need to copy your HDD to SSD, it's possible, you can use software for doing that. personnaly I use Casper for make back up/copy of HDD it work under Windows and are very easy

  • Best practice: 1.8 inch msata ssd to use as system disk?

Can I use a msata 1,8 inch ssd as a systendisk in the Y500 ? and wil it be faster dan the HDD ?If yes, I doubt using the Kingstone KC380 240 GB or the 120 GB. I need 70 to 80 GB for the OS all my programs, filesys etc. . So both will do, but is both are good I buy some reserve capacity. Only the disavantage of the 240  is that it has random reading :21.000 IOPS ?? and the 120 GB : 54.000 IOPS. (the sequential readin and writing is for both 520MBpS).is this random reading speed difference relevant for what I want? are there other reasons to prefer one to the other ?Thanks for informing me, I have no clou.  Iris

It will definitely be much faster than the normal HDD you have. The sequential read/write is usually noticed when moving large files from/to the SSD.  Random reading speed is basically how many operations are done in random 4KB files around the disk, and is a measure of fast you'd move pictures, for example. A big folder with lots of small pictures will take longer. 21,000 is a low number when speaking of regular SATA-3 SSDs, but I'm not so sure if its a normal number speaking of m.SATA.

  • X230: Questions regarding included 32GB msata SSD

    Spoiler (Highlight to read)
Hi... I've got a couple of questions regarding the X230 offered in Singapore, which comes with a msata ssd:
"Up to 5x Boost 32GB Micro Solid State Drive Outperforms 5400rpm Drive "
I AM assuming this is a msata ssd?
    http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/sgweb/LenovoPortal/en_SG/special-offers.workflowho...
    1) Given the limited size of this msata SSD (32GB), can I assume that only the operating system (Win 7) is installed here by default?
What about the folders under "My Documents", "My Pictures" and etc. Are they also installed into the SSD by default? I tend to leave all my work documents in that file, and it fills up pretty fast.
    2) I assume that the recovery partition is still located in the 320GB SATA HDD(7200rpm)?
    3) When I do a recovery from the Lenovo rescue/recovery programme (from the recovery partition), will Win 7 install correctly into the SSD, and not the HDD.
    4) If I do a factory recovery using the recovery DVDs (which I will create as soon as I receive the x230), will everything be installed correctly? Windows 7 to SSD and recovery partition to HDD?
    Thank you for your time!

the expressways software would make the 32 gigs mSATA a drive cache for the main HDD. Nothing is really installed on the mEATS, only files that are frequently used or predicted to be used frequently will be replicated on the mSATA.

  • How to add mSata SSD as HDD cache (for Windows 8)?

    Hi,
I have T430 with HDD and Windows 8, 64.  I have installed a new 32 GB mSata SSD, but I cannot figure out a way to set it up as a cache.
I am aware of the solution where ExpressCache needs to be installed  but I have Windows 8 and the below link does not apply:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT074404
I have also tried installing Interl Rapid Storage software.  It does show my SSD but there is no option to "Accelerate".  Googling points out that in BIOS I need to change SATA mode to RAID, but I only have Compatible and AHCI options there.  Installing latest BIOS and lates Intel Rapid Storage drivers did not help.
Any other options I might be missing?  Looks like it is either Lenovo publishes ExpressCache for Win 8 or adds IRS / RAID support in BIOS.
    --Pavel
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Ok, I have figured it out.  Turns out that ExpressCache link for Windows 7 works for Windows 8 as well.  After installing it I had to remove the volume from the SSD using disk manager and then run from the admin command prompt (can get there using Win+X key combo):
    eccmd -partition
This command automatically found my SSD (again trick here is to make sure it is wiped clean first - not formatted and not partitioned).
Now I can see the status and effectiveness of caching via:
    eccmd -info
Impressive - about 60% of read operations right now are from SSD.  System is way more responsive and boots faster.  You can see even that HDD lamp lights up less frequently.  I definitely recommend adding an msata SSD if you have a HDD T430!
PS. ExpressCache.exe which I assume is GUI does not start though, I had to use the command line.

  • S430 mSATA SSD and Dual Boot

Yesterday my Lenovo Thinkpad S430 arrived, I have some questions concerning dual booting Linux and Win 8 from the mSATA. I have a Crucial m4 128Gb with the current firmware 07MH which I want to want to install instead of the 16Gb mSATA SSD which is currently used for caching.
For that I want to do a clean Win 8 install (I got the ISO and a valid serial) and presumably an current Ubuntu. Unfortunately I have no experience with UEFI and Secure Boot and that stuff. Is there anything I need to do, are there any problems with what I want to do?
The current UEFI BIOS on my S430 is the GAET71WW (2.07), should I upgrade it to the current 2.54?
Is there anything else I should know?
    Regards and thank you,
    meruah

If I'm reading Hemanth Kumar's post correctly, 16GB is the largest mSATA drive provided by and supported by Lenovo for use as a cache.
I'd expect that you can use most any capacity mSATA drive in that slot for a primary OS drive.  It is frequently done with Lenovo laptops to install a large mSATA SSD - as I did in my T420, 256GB - and keep the HDD as a data drive.
That said, I don't have specific experience with your machine.  It would be great if someone with specific experience would join the conversation.  Otherwise, I can only say it's probably OK.

  • X220 msata ssd 480GB? and recovery

    Hi all,
I tried to upgrade my x220 and I've successfully install my "Crucial M500 480GB mSATA SSD" .
I can see it when press F12 on the bios screen, and I've update my bios to 1.39 firmware.
However, I cannot see the harddrive after I enter win 7.
    Does anyone have some suggestion?
Also, I just burned my recovery disc into an USB harddrive and try to recovery it to default.
when I press F12 on the bios screen and click "enter" on the USB harddrive, it showed "Invalid partition table"
(I can open the recovery harddrive without an issue)
    What should I do?
    Thank you all.

  • MSI GE70 Apache Pro 0-61 msata SSD

    Hello guyz,
I have recently ordered the above mentioned MSI laptop. As it does not come with an ssd. So i thought of adding one to it. After searching google i found that an msata ssd can be added to this model. I wanted to confirm here on the official msi forum. I am thinking of buying a Samsung Evo 840 msata ssd 250gb for this upgrade. Can you please confirm will this ssd be compatible with this laptop model ? and is it ok if i install a new OS (windows 8.1) on the new ssd for booting purpose and not deleting the old OS. Lastly please do confirm if the laptop has an extra msata ssd slot . As i have still not received the laptop so thought of ordering an msata to use it with. Waiting for your replies Thankyou

The GE70 should come with 2 mSATA sockets (I believe), assuming that there is none installed already.
Yes, the Samsung 840 EVO should work fine. (95% sure about that)
I would use the MSI Burn Recovery disks that you NEED TO MAKE when you first setup your notebook (I HIGHLY SUGGEST MAKING THESE) to reinstall Windows onto the SSD. I would remove your OLD HDD and install the SSD and then use those recovery disks to install the OS.

Can I install a mSATA ssd in my HP ENVY 17t-k000 CTO Notebook PC? Added a 250 gb SATA sdd and 8 gb memory chip today but could not find any way to also add a 250 gb mSATA sdd. I looked on the front and back side of the system board.
Should I return the Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD I bought from Newegg?

The Service Manual is no help whatsoever. It says an M.2 mSSD is supported on "select models" but there is no picture of it in the Manual or indication where it is on the "Select Models". Those that do have it use an M.2 version (three connector prongs not 2) so your 840 Evo would not work even if you had one of the "Select Models". I believe on those that have it the M.2 port is right on the motherboard so if you do not see it there you are not among the select.

    Hi,
The SSD you linked is an mSATA part.  It will not fit in a y510p.  It isn't just the size.  As stated earlier in this thread, the slot in the laptop (if it is there at all - some don't have an SSD slot) is for M.2/NGFF cards.  They are a completely different form factor than mSATA.

  • Type of HDD in Edge E130 and question about msata SSD

I'm interested in thickness of HDD in E130. I read that in E125 was 7 mm HDD and there is troubles with 9 mm. So, is  E130 similar to E125(E130 is next-gen of this type netbooks, but there is huge posibility that Lenovo Engineers decided not to change HDD type)? Or 9 mm hard drive will work?
Installing msata breaks warranty agreement, doesn't it? And i have some, maybe, obvious questions amout msata SSD(i've read about installing SSD in other Thinkpad notebooks), but I need some proves for Edge E130:
1)Speed is limited by SATAII interface?
2)mSata drive as bootable device will work?
Last questions are not such important, but i'll happy, if Edge E130/E135 users will share their experience
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I bought the E130 as a travel computer, so I didn't have to travel with my X220T - which is a tank compared to this little fellow. I have the 3358-8dg model of the e130 (came with free-dos but I bought an extra 4GB Ram to up the total to 8GB). The HDD is the usual 7mm think ones as expected.
I've had my e130 for 2 days now and I removed the HDD it shipped with and installed a 64GB mSata instead.

I then installed Win7 with SP1 from a USB in UEFI mode (see this thread: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Discussion/Prepare-an-usb-thumb-drive-to-boot-windows-7-or-8-i... - installed Lenovo System Update 5 and installed all drivers and software along with all windows updates.
So, running only an mSata HD and booting from it is not a problem at all.
My windows experience index is 4.9 due to the Graphics: Desktop performance for Windows Aero.
The HD transfer rate is 7.9.
The exact model of the mSata SSD I installed is: Crucial m4 SSD 64GB, mSATA 6Gb/s (CT064M4SSD3)
    I hope this helps.
