Moving windows to 2nd monitor...

not microsoft windows, APPLICATION windows!
seems to be an os issue, so posting here.
i just got an external monitor for my 12" powerbook (LG 19" widescreen...recommended!).
i have it (physically, and in the 'arrangement' window) above my powerbook; the menubar is on the pb.
sometimes, i cannot move a window (ie safari) to the LG; it can't get past the menubar.
any ideas? for now, i open displays, move the menubar to the LG, then move it back, but...seems over-involved.
thanks!

hmmm...
i can move the mouse freely between the 2 monitors, going above the menubar to the ext. monitor.
just sometimes, a window won't move up (safari happens mostly; stuck at menubar...)
any other thoughts, anyone?

  • Displays - gather windows from 2nd monitor? OR - turn off detected display?

I use my Sony HDTV (960XBR) via HDMI as a 2nd monitor sometimes (also use a 17" LCD sometimes). When not using the Sony for the Mac (like actually watching TV!), the Mac still detects it as a display and allows any program windows I'd placed there to remain on that display, even though it's not actually displaying the Mac signal.
Question: is there any way to "gather" all program windows onto the primary display? Or "turn off" a detected display from the Mac?
    Thanks!

Most applications support the following: under the Window menu, you'll see a "Bring All to Front" command. If you hold down the Option key, that changes to "Arrange in Front". Choose that to have all windows arranged in front. That should probably force all windows to the main screen.
    Hope this helps.....

  • Spaces switches away from application when moving window to another monitor

    Using multiple monitors in Mavericks:
I often want a window from the same application on each monitor. Why?  Because I'm working in one window, and I want to refer to another.  Mostly it's the brower (Firefox), but sometimes it's Word or Excel too although I think this is a Mavericks issue.
Here's the issue:  When I move the a window to another monitor, Spaces on the original monitor changes away from the current application.
This is frustrating, because I have to keep Cmd Tabbing to get back to my original application on both monitors... how do I prevent this from happening?
    Thanks!

This reply from Grzegortz Krzminski was helpful - problem solved:
"Hover your mouse over the tasbar icon of the application (the thumbnail preview appears) > right click on the thumbnail preview > select Move > hold the button and move the window."

    Hi,
No, it's up to your decision, we don't need external speakers for laptops. This has nothing to do with a second monitr/screen.

  • Windows 10 shows the 2nd monitor has 1920x1080 but actually it is 50% less around 1080x840

The resolution of the 2nd monitor, a Vizio VF551XVT 55-inch 1920x1080 HDTV connected through HDMI cable, shows 1920x1080 (Recommended) on the Windows 10’s Display Screen Resolution setting utility but the true resolution of the 2nd monitor is less than 50%; around 1080x840. All applications on the 2nd monitor displayed their header & boarder frames twice wider on screen, which waste/occupy lots of the 2nd monitor’s display area. Please advise how to correct this critical lower than the set/expected resolution problem of th 2nd monitor.  Thanks. The 1st/primary monitor in this case is a mobile PC Display (1920x1080), Lenovo Z710 Intel i7 4710MQ notebook with NVIDIA 840M GPU. Previously running under the Windows 8.1 OS with the same configuration, the 2nd monitor resolution was also displayed incorrectly but just initially right after the Windows 8.1 reboot, i.e. 2nd monitor shows 1920x1080 resolution but actually the 2nd monitor is about the same as Windows 10, the actual resolution is much/50% fewer than 1920x1080. However, the resolution of the 2nd monitor (HDTV) under Windows 8.1 can be corrected (worked around) by switching the main display from 1st to 2nd monitor, then switching main display back from 2nd to 1st, but such Win 8.1 work around doesn't work for Windows 10 OS . Also, please advise whether Lenovo, MS Windows or NVIDIA is responsible for the displays re-position issue. The re-position issue is, when a TV, PC, shared 2nd monitor is disconnected to watching TV, etc., Windows OS currently moves all the display positions, both active and minimized displays, from 2nd monitor to 1st/main monitor, but ideally would be just moving/re-position the active displays to the main/1st monitor and maintain/leave those minimized display positions intact, so when 2nd monitor reconnects back (done watching TV), user doesn’t need to re-align all the displays back to 2nd monitor again. Thanks for helps.

If you won't lose anything and if it is not a big hassle, I would re-install.
Mainly because Win 10 TP is, after all, a beta OS. Too many possibilities of bugs and glitches. It is better off to reinstall.
The latest build 9879 has a ISO download link. Use the ISO and burn it to a bootable DVd. Then use the DVD to do a clean reinstall.

  • Windows xp extended desktop not showing up on 2nd monitor all of a sudden

I've used a 2nd monitor as my main monitor for my T61.  I powered down today to move to another location, when I reconnected to my usual 2nd monitor, the screen just comes up blue, the cursor jumps between my 2 monitors, but there is no Windows coming up on the external monitor 2.  Usually everything boots up automatically to both of my monitors.......I've gone into Windows XP display settings, extended the desktop - but still nothing - just blue with the cursor either on my laptop monitor 1 or jumping over to external monitor 2.  Help?

    Try this:
    1. Go to Display Settings and set the Display to setting 1. (Multiple Monitors) and exit settings.
    2. Press Fn and F7 until BOTH Monitors are Shown.
    3. You shouuld be able to select  Either or  Both Monitors in Sequence.
I replaced my BIOS Battery and had the same problem.

HI. I am using windows side of my macbook pro. Yesterday, for some reason, the computer quit recognizing my 2nd monitor. Nvidia is one of the drivers used but I have updated this and it is not working still. Someone said that I should contact the maker of the laptop, apple, and get graphics drivers from them. But I don't know how to do this. Help would be appreciated.

  • IPhoto window suddenly moves to 2nd monitor

This only happens when iPhoto is open on my primary monitor which is the built in screen on my 27" iMac.  When I click on a photo the application will often partially minimize and then jump to the external monitor.
Seperate issue - after exiting full screen the application keeps running but is not on either monitor.  I looked and it is also not running on a different virtual desktop (can't recall what apple calls this).  The only way to get it back is to close iPhoto and reopen.
iPhoto does not act up with the 2nd monitor disconnected.  Other applications do not behave this way.

  • Pavilion Slimline 400-034 Windows 8 not detecting 2nd Monitor

Hello, I have a Windows HP computer, and I recently bought a 2nd monitor for my birthday, link click here. I have the same monitor for my first, and that works perfectly fine, when I bought the 2nd monitor, I realized I have a different port, and it's not a DVI-I, it's a DVI-D. So I bought a VGA to DVI-D connector, so I plugged my VGA into the connector and then plug the DVI-D into the tower. I turned on my computer, and the 2nd monitor wasn't detected, the DVI-D connected one, but the first one was. The monitor was set into mode auto, so it detected any working inputs, DVI, VGA, HDMI, and another. The 2nd monitor works thought while into the DVI-I port, but neither work in the DVI-D port. Any help (: ??

    Here are the specs for you HP Pavilion Slimline 400-034 Desktop Computer and here is the user guide for your Insignia™ - 24" LED HD "NS-24EM51A14" Monitors. Based on the specs of your computer, it has one DVI-D (digital only) output and one DVI-I (digital and analog) output as shown below;
    #3 - DVI-D (digital only)                     #4 - DVI-I (digital and analog)
    According the user guide for your Insignia monitors... VGA, DVI-D, and HMDI inputs are available. Using a passive DVI-to-VGA adapter will work on the DVI-I port because it supplies both digital and analog signals. Using a passive DVI-to-VGA adapter will NOT work on the DVI-D port because it only supplies digital signals. Please remove both DVI-to-VGA adapters and VGA cables and replace them both with DVI-D cables. You can purchase these cables online and at most local retail store such as Fry's, Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Radio Shack, Staples, Newegg, Office Depot, etc. Once you have purchased two DVI-D cables, please connect your hardware as follows;
    Computer ---> DVI-D cable ---> Monitor #1
    Computer ---> DVI-D cable ---> Monitor #2

  • Main screen window grew onto 2nd monitor

Help. I was working away and my main screen grew into 1/3 of my 2nd monitor. I've had my Imac for 2 years and never had a problem. Now I'm dead. I lowered the settings in Preferences. It made the window smaller, but the MAIN background is still larger than the screen size. Every time I open another program, it's onto the second monitor by 1/3. I've tried everything.

This is SO frustrating. I've been trying to figure this out for over 10 hours now. There is nothing I can find out there.

Got the "apple firewire ntsc" choice to show up even if grayed out and "missing" under "audio/visual" menus by recreating choices in Easy Setup under "final cut pro" MENU thank GOODNESS because I was reading horror stories on here about this under another thread with someone trashing preferences, reinstalling and the works and still not getting it to show up...on my search now for an analog/digital converter up at b&h...find it odd that the s video connector wouldn't show the crt monitor when I put both displays through the 3870...I switched it back to see if it worked again when only the one dell monitor display was there and there it is again mirroring the screen display on my desktop...just can't be seen as an "external monitor" in fcp...couldn't find anything specific in the shane ross threads to this. I'm sad the program doesn't just see the s video connection though the 3870 though my computer does fine and will query up at b&h in regard to what might be affordable as far as a digital/analog converter. It's also weird in itself that when I put the two dell monitors on the one card my computer no longer could see the s video crt connection...makes no sense. Will report in later as to what I discover up at b&h as I'm sure there's a world of people out there using this sony crt monitor still even into the upgrades with computers and software so I imagine therein lies the solution. Thanks again and I'll report in as to what hardware might be suggested for me.

  • Mission Control Dual Monitors moving windows between desktops

So far I like the new Mission Control however I am having what I beleive to be an issue.
I have a dual monitor setup and multiple Desktops configured. If I want to move a window from Primary Monitor Desktop 1 to Primary Monitor Desktop 2 it works but if I want to move a window from Primary Monitor Desktop 1 to Secondary Monitor Desktop 2 it will not let me. I have to do the move in two steps. First I have to move it to Primary Monitor Desktop 2 and then from there I can move it to Secondary Monitor Desktop 2 ?
Please can someone verify this ? Is this a limitation or a bug ?

Hehe, Linux+Compiz rulezzz. You can tweak it the way YOU need and not Apple think you should do 'cause they "just knows better what market needs"
My ideal setup on Linux workstation was: 2 Graphics Cards, 4 Monitors, 2 of them fixed, so I could put there applications and windows which should be permanently seen, for example -- Zenoss monitoring dashboard (screen 1) and stocks tickers (screen 2)
Screen 3 and 4 respectively were part of the Compiz Cube with Xinerama activated, e.g. one extra wide desktop across 2 monitors, seen as semi-transparent Cube during transitions between 4 virtual destops, so I could almost immediately see where all my windows are.
And now, Apple, could you tell me, If I've got Mac Pro with 2 Graphics Cards and 4 Monitors, is such a setup feasible with Mission Control?... OK, ok, you don't have such an eycandy as Transparent Compiz Cube, I could survive without, but having simultaneously 2 monitors as part of virtual desktop and 2 others fixed is absolut 'a must have', so, now's your turn... HOW?

  • Mac Pro 3.1 (early 2008) lags since I connected a 2nd monitor - HELP!!

    Hey guys,
I just bought a 2nd monitor and i have lags every 5 seconds which
last about half a second (feels like 10 or less fps during the lag).
It happens with all kinds of applications. It gets worse with multiple
applications openend at a time. The crazy thing is that it only occurs
when i start to use both monitors at the same time. When i e.g. use
Logic 9.1 and use one monitor everything runs nice and smoothely
but as soon as i move the window slowly to the 2nd monitor i can
see the window lagging while I'm moving it. This is really annoying
because it seems not every input from the mouse/keyboard gets
into the system and its not a smooth workflow at all.
I switched the monitors connections but it didn't help.
    Mac Pro (Early 2008) 2.8Ghz 8-core
    Snow Leopoard ( 10.6.2 )
6GB RAM (2x2gb kingston, and the usual 2x1gb)
    ATI 2600XT and 3 HDD.
    1 Monitor 24" LG W2452T running at 1920 x 1200
    1 Monitor 22" Samsung Syncmaster 2243BW running at 1680 x 1050
I really hope that you guys can help me out with this one.
What could be the problem? The ATI 2600XT should definately
be able to handle two screens at once with such little graphics
    in logic 9 ?!
I want to run Logic 9 and an analyzer software (Spectre from AudiofileEngineering)
at the same time but its not possible with the LAG.
The problem/lags also occur when i sync the monitors.
Would a 2nd graphics card be a solution? But as I said
before its not a graphics demanding application.
Is it a hardware or software problem?
    Summary:
    - The whole System lags (not just one monitor) when
I start to use both monitors (having application windows on both).
I've got minor lags when using only one display and leave the
2nd one with the desktop wallpaper clean.
    I tried:
-using only the 2x1 GB RAM which came with the mac pro
-using only the 2x2 GB Kingston RAM
Thank you in advance for your help guys!
    Rick

    Hey all,
I wasn't able to fix this yet.
I did everything I can think of. I even tried to wire
one monitor with a VGA cable but it didn't help.
I even have small lags when I am moving the Safari window
between the 2 monitors. Really little lags then but they
definitely are noticeable. I can make a video of that
if that would help someone understanding.
Hope there is someone out there who can help me with this.
    Thanks already for any advice!
    Cheers,
    Rick
Edit: Do you think a new graphics card like the ATI 4870 would
help it? But I really don't want to spend more money just to
have 2 monitors while i have already 2 dvi connections on the
    ati 2600XT.

  • Dual monitors screen management after disconnecting 2nd monitor

I have a 2nd monitor attached to my iMac and if open an app Window on the 2nd monitor the next time I start the app the Window always defaults to the 2nd monitor (even if the 2nd monitor is turned off). Since I don't always remember that the app was opened on the 2nd monitor I would like a way to force the app to default to the primary monitor so I don't always need to turn on the 2nd monitor to move the Window to the primary monitor.
I have tried using spaces for this but it does not seem to work.

Oups.. I got it   Just switched the menu bar, when I shoud have switched displays... Mouse was moving to second monitor from left instead of right... Fixed.
