.movs are much brighter than Self contained export after Compression

Hey there, I have a very interesting problem....
My .movs after using compressor are much brighter than the original self contained file from FCP.
My workflow is as follows
1. I make one export from final cut 6 as a self contained pro res movie file
2. I open the self contained file in compressor and add a h264 setting for both a .mov and a wmv
After the encoding process is done my wmv is very close to the original sequence in FCP, however my .mov is much brighter
I have tried adjusting the brightness and contrast within Compressor settings, but I find I' m losing color. The original footage is HDV and we are capturing it as Pro Res.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? Or any suggestions?

After a day of tedious test work I have discovered a few things....
There is a display setting within QT preferences that says 'Enable FCP' this corrects the situation as WMV and .MOVS use different color settings and therefore a discrepancy in gamma. However this is only a solution within that computer, as it is merely a display option.
There is a gamma filter within compressor that gives us the best results for a blanket compressor setting that allows us change all .movs that go to our clients.
This does not give identical results between WMV and MOV but a very close comparison.
Will they ever be identical? or is it a fundamental difference between codecs and platforms?

No, I haven't noticed. I have an AT&T phone, and the Verizon phones in my office sound about the same when they ring.

  • Chapter Markers and Self-Contained Exports

OK, Final Cut Express 2.0.3 on a MacOS 10.3.9 system
I pull in some digital video and edit out unwanted parts by making a sequence of sub-clips, each marked with a Chapter Marker.
To save some drive space, I export the sequence, with Chapter Markers, to a self-contained Quicktime file in full DV format.
Re-import the resulting file and I see no Chapter Markers anywhere in FCE. If I drop the same file on iDVD, all the chapters show up, so I know the markers are there.
Anyone know of a way to get them to show up in FCE ?
    Thanks.

I just saw my chapter markers by opening my FCE 2 DV export in QuickTime Pro 7.0.3. They show up as a text track and display across the top 32 pixels (or so) of the movie. I disabled the text track. Even so, the QuickTime Player shows the Chapter labels to the right of the controller bar. However, they disappeared for further exports.

  • Images in Bridge have suddenly become much brighter than when I call them into Photoshop CS6.

Images in Bridge have suddenly become much brighter then when I call them into Photoshop CS6. My monitor is calbrated.

First go the Bridge / Camera Raw preferences.
Inhere under 'default image settings' are 4 options to put a checkmark in front.
If there is a checkmark in front of "apply auto tone adjustments' deselect it and try again.
Otherwise select one problem file and with right mouse click menu choose 'purge cache for selection'. If this works then go to menu tools / cache/ purge cache for folder.
If still in trouble could you provide more details about versions and OS and preferable a screenshot to clarify the problem more?

  • Output is much brighter than preview

    Hello,
I have a problem with video output. As you can see on picture below, output is brighter than preview. I'm using LUTs and export is H.264 with no calibration or auto correct. Is there any way to have same output as a preview? It's really annoying to experiment with it - it mainly waste a lots of time.
    Thanks.

    Hey Filip,
the "brightness" you see is cause by the quicktime gamma shift.
Please activate "automatic color calibration" during render to get a right result OR add a LUT-Layer with a 'Quicktime_gamme.ilut'
automatic color calibration feature compares input & output and automatically calculates and apply a correction lut to prevent gamma shifts.
    Hope that helps,
    Duy-Anh

  • "full quality" movie is much fuzzier than compressed movie

Here's a strange one. When I export a clip as full quality and then play it back as a quicktime movie, the resolution is not nearly as sharp as when I export using "expert settings". The "full quality" file is, as I would expect, about 10 times larger than the compressed file, but much fuzzier.
What's going on here? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

But a friend suggested that I could do better by not compressing twice
Exporting as Full Quality DV doesn't involve any conversion, since DV is iMovie's native format.
But the strange thing is that On2Flix actually does a better job when you feed it a compressed file. I tried giving it a dv file to convert, and the result was poor.
Contrary to what many users beleive, DV is compressed. DV is 13GB per hour. Uncompressed video is (I think) over 50GB per hour. And that's for standard definition. HD is much larger.
So I checked their help section, which reads; "While Flix can encode uncompressed video files, it creates better looking SWF video files from video sources with some compression." I'm actually producing flv files, but I assume the principle is the same.
DV is indeed compressed, so I wonder why it doesn't work.
I have never heard of On2Flix before, so I have no idea why it doesn't like DV. Sorry.

  • You guys are much smarter than I... Please help!

I thought I could do it, but I messed up!
At first itunes gave me a message "iTunes cannot read library because it was created by a newer version of iTunes"
(I have the latest version of iTunes)
I took some steps described to me in a link at Apple.com and now it is more messed up than ever.
    MAIN POINT IS HERE!!!
NOW my iTunes library is completely empty. I can add albums or songs from my hard drive one at a time, but since I have thousands upon thousands of songs, dozens of video's and all kinds of playlists I can't see how it would take any less than a week of solid work to do it all manually.
Someone help! I know you can!!! Please tell me how I can get my library back. ALL of the files are still on the computer. I just need them to be in iTunes!

I am doing that right now... there is no way it was that easy!!!!
Oh man.... thank you so much!!!!!
I seriously can't believe it!!! You are a lifesaver!!!!!
I mean, wow... it finally works!

  • My jpeg file sizes are much larger than they used to be.

Just recently the file sizes on my .jpeg files have become excessively larger than they used to be just a week or so ago. Where I used to go almost a week to need to archive to DVD a bunch of saved images, I've now got to save to DVD almost daily.
For example, a 300x300 pixel image which shoud be about 32 Kb reads 383 Kb in the finder. I'm not doing anything to these images, just draging and droping.
Where I used to get 7 K files on a DVD, I'm now getting less than 2 K files to each disc.
Any thoughts on what's changed and how to fix it?

What App & JPEG compression rating are you using, some apps can reduce file size by dropping colors for instance...

  • AdobeAcrobatPro: Downloaded pdf's are much smaller than scanned ones. How to get scanned ones to be fewer px and not lose quality?

I have several accounts which post .pdf's to be downloaded. These are good quality and are small (kb) files.
I find when I scan paper documents, they have huge pixelation... and as I make them smaller, they lose readability.
I've tried to scan at 72px-300px. I've tried to save as .jpg which was then added to a .docx. I've tried to simply save as .pdf all from photoshop.
Is there a way to get the quality of a downloaded .pdf document and it's low pixelation when starting from a paper document which must be scanned?
I have a Canon CanoScan Lide 100. and I'm using Adobe Photoshop CC 2014 as well as Adobe Acrobat Pro.

Generally, if you want best quality you don't start with a scan. It's just a HUGE picture.
But you can try the "text recognition" feature of Acrobat ("OCR"). Be sure to experiment with the settings, they have huge effects on the result.
For OCR to work you need good quality scans of good quality originals using common fonts in an expected way (e.g. a page from a magazine).

  • Forwarded images are much smaller than the original

Something new has happened. After 10 years of Mail I am just experiencing this phenomenon. When I forward an email with pictures or illustrations attached, the forwarded images are about 75% the size of the original. In many instances that takes the readability away. Does anyone have an idea how I can fix this or what causes it? Thanks.

  • Velocities are same value but some are much louder than others.

I've been using the pencil tool to write lines in the matrix view. As I understand, it will draw the same note value as whatever note was drawn or selected before it.
The parts I'm writing all have a static dynamic and are all red (max velocity value of 127). However, regardless of this information, some of the notes play really loud and jack my track meter into the red. I checked my track automation to make sure that I didn't accidentally draw in any volume changes, but there's nothing.
I have no idea why this is happening, but it is very frustrating.
    Any help appreciated.

    Hi,
As other before me have stated:
What is the instrument being played?
If it IS an instrument that has built-in effects/modulators, you can and will hear large differences in volume.
Also, why on earth are you inputting notes all at max volume? You are setting yourself up for later mixing problems, and also, you are getting rid of any internal dynamics that the instrument itself might have at different volumes.
My 2cents have been spent now,
    Cheers

  • Capacitive keys are brighter than normal after Den...

I have seen this issue posted several times on the WPC forums. Is there any solution.
Below is a copy and paste from their fourms.
Hey fellas. Just received the Long awaited denim update, with the flagship perks of course. But there something else im noticing. The capacitive keys at the bottom are much brighter than before denim. Now it maybe something in my eyes, or I just never noticed how bright they were...but I'm sure that before denim, the lights weren't that noticeable.Which is pretty distracting to be honest, cuz it doesn't help you to focus well on the screen. Anyone else feeling this? Any solution?
My ATT 1520 has this issue.

funny you bring this up. my 1520 is seemingly the same as well.
noticed that I could see the light where the buttons are located through the back of the red case in the dark last night.
I cannot see that there is anything we can do about it, and am not sure what or why it has even come up.

  • Am I exporting to Self Contained Movie properly?

    Hi,
I think I'm doing this properly, but perhaps someone will have more experience and expertice!  We shoot on a Canon XF300 camera, which natively captures on XDCAM HD422 720p30 (50mbs).  FCPro 7 could capture natively, but am I correct, X cannot?  (Please . . . somebody tell me Apple does have the codecs for XDCAM native import!)
No problem, we open 7 to capture from our cards we shoot on.  THEN we quit 7, open X and import the files!  So we keep the fast import speed and "smaller" files (50 mbs vs. 65 in Prorez) of the individual captured clips.  We import for highest quality at Prorez 422 into X.  Edit everything - and now for the question.
It's time to export a master.  I have "learned" this - I THOUGHT if  X was set (in the edit menu) to ProRez 422 better performance, or the Best quality, or Proxy - I THOUGHT when you export, the quality wa always the best X can do.  (Basically ProRez422 at 65mbs.)
But I find now I was wrong!
When I export to Self Contained Movie with settings left on "Proxy" the exported file is ProRes422 and plays at 20mbs.  Much "lower" quality than we want.  But leave all setting the same in X, except change the "quality" to original or optimized best performance OR BEST quality - the export is still ProRes422, but the data rate is 65mbs.  (Which I assume is "better"!)  BTW, we use 12x720.
So I was wrong!  It's important (I'm guessing and looking for conformation) that if we want the BEST export quality, we should NOT have it set to PROXY!
I think everyone will agree with everything I've said so far, as that's what we're finding.  But NOW I see X will export at XDCAM Prores422 at 50mbs (by changing the codec on the export menu.)  Now, the result is 50mbs (lower than 65mbs, good! Takes up less data)
But . . . WHY would X export at XDCAM Prores422HD (at 50mbs) but NOT IMPORT OUR NATIVE FOOTAGE OF THE SAME VINTAGE?
    What am I missing here?
Thanks - hopefully many people have the same thoughts?
    Larry

Tom, it's all a bit confusing, although I have spent considerable time with Canon on this!  What I KNOW is FCP 7 will import footage shot on our Canon XF300 natively.  The exact codec FC uses is
"XDCAM HD422 720p30 (50mbs)"  It works beautifully.  2 BIG advantages for us - it uses 50mbs when it converts to QT files (vs. 65mbs in ProRes)  and it imports native clips about 4 times faster than converting to Prores.  (On the other side, though - when you render in FC - if the sequence is setup on the cative codec above - it DOES take considerable longer to render anything but that's life, I guess!!
FC then exports using that codec as well, making the self contained exports play at 50mbs, NOT 65 that ProRes seems to.
BUT . . . as we discussed above - FCP X will export to "XDCAM HD422 720p30 (50mbs)" but NOT injest footage in the XDCAM format.  We  ingest with 7, then quit 7 and open X to import the files - I don't understand why FCP X exports in XDCAM, but not log and transfer files natively in that same codec?
    Thanks,

  • Exporting movie - self contained = help

    Hello,
I've finished my work in fcp, im ready to export; I need to make 2 different formats for every exported movie.. one is for dvd and the other is for internet (will use compressor)
when i export from fcp using quicktime movie, do I make it self contained or not? self contained takes a lot of space..... once i hand in the files, I will delete all, don't need a copy from that work...
my main question is, does it make any difference if I use compressor with a self contained movie or a NOT-self c m?
    thanks

referenced movies work just fine in compressor so long as you are not about to delete the raw footagen or render files.
