(MP) RAM Previews haven't worked reliably since February

I was really hoping the CC 2014 update would address this issue I've been experiencing since February, but the issue remains and if anything is worse than ever. Long story short, sometimes RAM previews work as expected (as in I press the RAM preview button and After Effects actually generates a RAM preview) and other times pressing the RAM preview button results in delays ranging from several seconds to several minutes or simply never doing anything at all. Sometimes, it's the horrendous "Initializing Background Processes this may take some time..." message, and other times it's "Rendering frame (MP) 2 of XXX requested" followed by...nothing ever happening. Try to imagine how frustrating this can be when on a deadline or with clients in the room.
I'd read that the size of your project can be a major factor in such delays. Well, I just started a brand new project that contains exactly one asset (a 1920x1080 22-second H264 video file), added a couple filters and clicked RAM Preview, only to be met with the "Rendering frame (MP) 2 of XXX requested" message and no frame ever rendered. Activity monitor showed 8 red "aeselflink (Not Responding) processes that didn't go away when I quit After Effects. I quit After Effects, logged out and back in, relaunched the project and RAM preview worked as expected. As I said, completely unreliable and unpredictable.
I need RAM Previews to work all of the time, not some of the time, and I need them to work with multi-processing enabled. I realize that disabling multi-processing for RAM previews resolves the up-front delays - but using only one of my eight CPUs is NOT a fix (considering each RAM preview would therefore take 8 times longer). Nor is rebooting and relaunching After Effects a dozen times per day a real solution, right?
My system is a 2013 New Mac Pro, 3Ghz 8-Core Intel Xeon E5, 32GB RAM, Dual D300 GPUs running Mac OS X 10.9.3 and purchased in January; I don't recall experiencing the issue prior to the February 13th AE update). The issue is present with both Adobe After Effects CC 12.2 and Adobe After Effects CC 2014 13.0. My Memory and Multi-Processing Preferences are in the attached image. I truly appreciate any help that can be offered. Thank you!

Rick, please read my third paragraph. While yes - disabling multi-processing helps, effectively turning my computer into a one-processor machine instead of an 8-processor machine is not a solution.
And I experience these long delays even with NO filters or 3rd party effects whatsoever. I just rendered an animation that was nothing more than a couple sliding illustrator layers with a 3D camera move and the render took 3 full minutes to get beyond "initializing background processes, this may take some time...". This just after a fresh launch of Adobe After Effects.

  • Audio preview no longer works correctly since AE-CC update

    Hi everyone.
Since updating AE CC a couple of days ago (now on 12.1.0.168) on OSX 10.8.5, 2.7GHz i7 16GB RAM, the audio and RAM preview no longer functions correctly.
    The steps I follow are:
    Open AE
    Open project
Press . to preview audio from where I am on the timeline, OR RAM preview workspace
What happens is my cursor turns into the wheel of doom for a about 20 seconds, then the playback begins but the audio is sped up which is wrong. Video is correct speed.
If I stop the audio or RAM preview, then preview again, everything is fine and plays instantly. If a RAM preview loops, then the audio reverts to normal speed.
I can open up any and all of my different project files and audio previews perfectly and instantly as it should. It's just the first time I press the . key on a freshly opened instance of AE that I get this problem.
I've tried restarting my mac to no avail, and also changing the pref settings away from what the settings have always been and that doesn't work either. I've even trashed my prefs and that also doesn't work.
I work exclusively at 25fps. Frame rate for RAM preview is set to auto (25) and changing this from auto to 25 doesn't work.
Memory settings are default since trashing my prefs, 16GB installed, 4GB for other apps, no checked boxes are ticked.
Any ideas on what has happened please?

  • How to limit RAM preview to the work area?

    Sorry for mistakes, I'm German!
My RAM preview is not limited to my work area and I couldn't find any way to change this behavior. Is there a preference to check or any other solution?
I'm using (I don't know, which information is needed, so I'll list everything I have in mind):
    Windows 7 64bit,
    After Effects CS5 10.0.1.19,
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz,
    GeForce 9300M GS
It would be great to get an answer, so I thank you in advance!

    Thanks a lot!
I don't know why I couldn't figure it out because I actually tried this out, too...
    But anyway, thank you!

  • Ram Preview isn't working

Hey, I am trying to ram preview in Adobe After Effects CS6, and it just doesn't work. It doesn't show it loading or anything.

What exact version of AE are you using? 11.0.0? 11.0.1? 11.0.2?
Is your playhead at the end of the comp?
What's in your comp? (Effects, number of layers, format and codec of footage, etc.)
How are you trying to invoke the RAM preview?
    What are your computer's specs?
And all the rest of these pieces of information would be helpful too.

  • I use preview for my work and since switching to Lion it's unusable.

Preview has become useless to me. I have to resize photos to upload them at my newspaper. Sometimes, for some God-known reason, I have to switch formats and switch back to make them upload on my website. In the old Preview, I could simply do a screenshot, open it, select "save as..." and save it as a jpg, then adjust the size, save it to my folder and then upload it.
The new version forces me to duplicate. If I then save the duplicate as a jpg, (or anything else) I can't do anything else to it because it says I don't have permission. I have to then find it in finder and change the permission on EACH photo, trying to change the permissions on the whole folder doesn't work. Once I've done that, I have to make ANOTHER duplicate, resize that, and save it. Soon I have versions of the photo all over my computer.
Conversely, I could resize it first, and then save it, but if I resize it as a PNG (which is what a screen shot is) and then save it as a jpg, it throws the size off.
If I upload the thing as a PNG it comes out smaller than does a JPG.
Furthermore, in the last Preview, the Save As.... option included a slider that allowed you to change the size in KB. Now it jsut shows a slider from best quality to least quality. Given that so many website limit KB size to 50 or 60, I am surprised that it's so hard to adjust to a specific number of KB!!! I have to keep guessing on Preview to get the photo as close to 60 as possible without going over!
If any part of this problem resonates with anyone, if anyone knows of something I don't know about in Preferences or something, for God's sake, my work life just got very difficult and any help is appreciated.
Also, somehow iPhoto got uninstalled on my computer. How can I reinstall it? Maybe I coudl do this photo resizing more easily in iPhoto and heck with Preview?
Note: I tried resizing on line, but it's very slow. Also requires intense guess work to get the KB right.

What happened was I selected the folder in the finder window, chose "get info" scrolled down and saw just the same thing you have there in the image.
I clicked the lock, chose a photo, did a screen shot (which landed on my desktop), retrieved the screen shot, put it in the folder with the original, then saved it as a jpg. (This is what my impossible website seems to make me do photos that came to me really large. It's not enough the merely resize it, I have to screen shot it, return the screen shot to a jpg, then resize it, and it will load. I have tech support working on that, but in the mean time, it's what i've got.)
So I then opened the jpg and tried to resize it....and got the same error message! You don't have permission! And I opened finder, found the jpg, clicked get info, and lo, same thing you show above, even though I'd theoretically changed permissions on that whole folder! And here's the kicker, I'm the person who supposedly has permission to read and write, but it doesn't seem to recognize me, and won't give me permission to edit my own dang photo!
    Oh, GRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!

  • CS5 RAM preview is slow if I do other things while it's building

    Good morning!
    I'm experiencing a strange issue.  1080/29.97 comp on an 8-core w/ 16GB.  Multi-proc rendering is off.
If I RAM preview the comp (800 frames or so) and wait while AE builds the RAM preview, it plays back fine & at speed.
If I start the RAM preview, then go work in Photoshop while it's building, then return to AE and attempt to play it down, I have the green bar like a normal RAM preview, but it plays very slowly -- almost as if it's re-rendering every frame (actually slower than if I just hit spacebar to render&play on the fly).. maybe 1fps.  If I stop and play those frames that it's slogged through, they then play normally.
Is it possible that RAM previewing while I'm using another app (e.g., Photoshop) is resulting in the frames being written to swap disk or elsewhere so that they're being re-read into RAM when I actually try to play it?  Disk caching is disabled in the AE Prefs, but...?
Thanks in advance for any ideas -- very annoying.

    Yes. That is possible.
Be sure that you're reserving enough RAM for other applications.

  • Ram Preview Issue with Yosemite

Hi, I have updated to OS X Yosemite, I am using AE 13.1.1.3, and now I am having an issue with RAM-Preview that makes working with AE problematic: When I start the Preview by hitting "0" on the Numpad the Ram Preview starts, but I am not able to stop it anymore until it has rendered to the end of the work area.
It is also strange that I am able to move keyframes while it renders.
The Shift-Ram Preview is also affected by this bug.

There is a known bug with Yosemite and the RAM preview, but your issue sounds different. Anyway, see the known issues here: After Effects good to go with Mac OSX v10.10 (Yosemite)

  • MacPro does not react to Clear RAM Preview

In order to see the movie fluently I make a RAM Preview. That works fine. But I cannot erase the RAM-Preview. Only after restart of motion, the RAM is free again. When I check with "istat pro"-Widget, I can see that the RAM is full and clicking on "clear RAM preview" has no effect. Anybody knows what the reason for this behaviour could be?
    Thanks for help or advice.

  • RAM preview questions

    1. Is there a way within the AE interface to monitor the amount
of used / available RAM during an active RAM preview?
    2. Is there a way to display the number of  the frame that is currently
being processed during the course of a RAM preview?
    3. Is there a way to initiate a RAM preview in reverse beginning
from the current frame?  Alternatively, is there a way to initiate
a "spacebar preview" in reverse beginning from the current frame?
    4. Is there a way to retain the processed frames of a RAM preview
after making a timeline change that does not affect the already
    processed frames?
    Question 4 examples:
-RAM preview first 120 frames, view result, extend the active
work area to lengthen the RAM preview, the entire RAM preview
needs to be re-rendered from beginning.
-RAM preview first 120 frames, interrupt and view, activate hidden
layer that begins at frame 100, the entire RAM preview needs to
    be re-rendered from beginning.
    thanks

First of all: I'm German, I make mistakes!
I don't know any real solution for any of your questions, but I have some work-arounds:
    1. Is there a way within the AE interface to monitor the amount
of used / available RAM during an active RAM preview?
    1. On Windows 7 you could look at the (I think it's called:) mini application on your desktop that indicates the usage of processor and RAM simply by hovering with your mouse over the little bar at the far bottom right, that shows the desktop. That's what I do!
If your not comfortable with that (or not able to) then the only way I know to figure something out about the (possible) RAM usage is to look under the preferences in the "Memory & Multiprocessor usage" (or something similar, I own the German version...).
    2. Is there a way to display the number of  the frame that is currently
being processed during the course of a RAM preview?
    2. Maybe you could insert a timecode effect. Just make a new solid and choose the effect from Text/Timecode.
    3. Is there a way to initiate a RAM preview in reverse beginning
from the current frame?  Alternatively, is there a way to initiate
a "spacebar preview" in reverse beginning from the current frame?
    3. I don't know any way to start a preview reversed, but you could set your work area to the area to want to preview (uncheck "From current time" option! That's what I didn't know How to limit RAM preview to the work area?! ) and also check the "looping option" in the preview panel to "ping-pong" (I don't know if they're called so...).
    4. Is there a way to retain the processed frames of a RAM preview
after making a timeline change that does not affect the already
    processed frames?
    4. After Effects actually does exactly that! But it doesn't seem to know, if the layer is above or beneath the already rendered ones. Also if you change a keyframe it will re-render everything up to the next keyframes. But apart from that it does keep the rendered keyframes without re-rendering really, really unnecessary parts.
I also just tried out extending the work are and it keeped the rendered frames. Maybe AE didn't had enough RAM to keep yours?

  • Multiprocessing works for RAM preview, extremely slow and aeselflink crashes when in Render Queue

    Hello all,
    System specs:
    Hackintosh
    OSX 10.9
    3.5Ghz (overclocked to 4.2Ghz) Core i7
Geforce GTX 580 classified 3GB Cuda GPU
AMD Radeon HD 6870 1GB Display GPU
    32 GB of RAM
    System SSD
    5 drive internal RAID
    After Effects CC 12.2.1.5
    Cuda drivers up to date
I'm having a problem with the render queue and multiprocessing. I have a moderate sequence with several effects and 3D layers. When I'm working in the composition, everything goes great. I can RAM preview and all my CPU cores will kick up to 100% and render the composition in no time all; with full resolution with no skipped frames. It works fantastically.
Then when I go to render the exact same composition with the same multiprocessing settings, AE will hang at the "initializing background processes" for at least 5-10 minutes, during which the CPU will ramp up to 100% but no frames will be rendered. AE still remains responsive, as I can hit the stop or pause buttons and the queue will be cancled. But then the aeselflink processes (up to 8 of them depending on my settings, I've tried several) will still continue at 100% cpu load even with AE not set to render anything. I will have to go into the activity monitor and force quit each process. If I leave it for 5-10 minutes, it will finally stop initalizing and start the render, but the CPU will still run at 100% but the frames will crawl slowly forward at about 1 frame per minute, with an estimated 28 hours to render frames that were rendering in under a minute during RAM preview.
I have tried both reducing the number of cores AE will use, adjusting the allocated RAM, and disabling multiprocessing alltogether. When I disable multiprocessing, the render slows to a complete crawl, and it will render around 1 frame every 5-10 seconds. Again, this is on a composition that rendered in less than a minute on full resolution with RAM preview.
The only way to get this composition to render is to export it to Media Encoder, which will render it (without multicore processing, unfortunately) in about 8 minutes, still not the blazing fast RAM preview but at least it finishes it in under 3.5 hours (the amount of time that the multiprocessing disabled render in AE will take).
Here's the multiprocessing settings that have been very stable and carried me through other projects. Disk Cache is not enabled. The only other thing that is disabled is the "Disable Layer Cache" under the Secret menu as the plugins I'm using (Plexus 2 in this case) doesn't like to update when the camera moves so this option has been disabled to force it to reset each frame.
Does anyone know what is going on?
Also, please don't tell me that I should not use multiprocessing or instruct me on basic steps as to increase preformance on my machine. I have been tweaking my memory and multiprocessing settings for a long time now, and it is completely stable in everything but this setup. So please no answers saying "just don't use multiprocessing". It was made for a reason, it's effective, and it's needed. And please don't say that it's the hackintosh, either, as it's the most stable and powerful computer I've ever used. Sorry for the disclaimers, I just want to have constructive help.
Thank you in advance for your ideas!

Hi Rick, not sure if you saw the part where I said please don't reply with turning off Multiprocessing, and I did not say that it works and is effective in all areas. However, if you actally take the time to read my post, you will definately notice that RAM preview with multiprocessing takes under a minute to render a scene. Multiprocessing disabled and rendered in AE takes 3.5 hours. In Media Encoder it takes around 8 minutes. Clearly it IS working and IS effective for my case and my rig. Any vendettas against MP does not help my situation at all.

  • Since I downloaded the upgraded software, my charger that came with my phone says "this cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this iphone"  It worked before but now it doesn't...I don't think I should have to buy a new one...

since I upgraded to the new operating system my charger no longer works...
It says"this cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this iPhone"

Try checking your cable socket/lightning cable for dirt, grime, pocket lint, etc. I could not find the solution to this issue myself and after much searching I found someone stating that cleaning this out helped them immensely.
After taking a wooden toothpick (making sure the phone was OFF first) and gently clearing out the edges and inside of the lightning socket this went away.) It is worth noting that I had a significant amount of dust or lint buildup along the edge rails which I think was causing the iphone to believe it was plugged into something when it was not.
Try it and see, ensure you are very careful and do not use any conductive tools to clean the area in question. Compressed air also does wonders here.

  • RAM previewing and rendering not working correctly

    Hi,
Today I was just about finished editing a video on CS6 and then when I'm about to add the last effect and render it it stuffs up on me:(. What happens is that while RAM previewing at some point during the loading of the preview it will stop loading, It will then proceed to play the ram preview on loop and when I press a button to stop it a small box pops up in the centre of my screen and the ram preview bar to show what has loaded (the one which shows green for parts that are loaded and blue for cached) turns black and sometimes other parts of after effects turn black. This has happened before and I fixed it by uninstalling and reinstalling After Effects about 6 times. I would do that this time though I would like to know the cause of it and any possible fixes as it is quite irritating. Another thing that may be happening is the RAM usage is slowly filling as I render. This has happened before on my laptop and I did not manage to fix it though it was not related to the first issue that time. The last time when it happened on my laptop the RAM usage eventually filled up to 100% and it would no longer render. I am not sure if it is happening this time as it is still currently rendering though I will update the thread if it does. Finally my render is going very slowly, I am not sure if this issue is realted to any of the above or if it is just the effects I am using though. My memory and multiprocessing settings are using 6 cores of 7 with 2 GB of ram allocated to each with multiprocessing on. My ram allocated for other programs is 6GB. To fix these Issues so far I have tried clearing the cache, purging the memory and image cache, restarting  my computer and reinstalling after effects. My specs are:
    i7 4770k non overclocked
    GTX 780
    G.Skill Ripjaws Z 2133mhz 32GB
    Samsung 840 pro
    Seagate Barracuda
    MSI Z87-G45
    H100i cooler
    Any reply is appreciated
    Thanks in advance
    Sam

How much experience do you have with AE? Ram preview can be lengthened by adjusting the resolution of the composition window, different parts of the project can be previewed using the work area, and preview length and render time are both a function of composition frame size. Complex, memory intensive effects like particle systems will reduce the render time and the length of a ram preview. Without knowing the details of your composition it's hard to say if you are running into a bug, running out of resources, or experiencing normal behavior.

  • Ram Preview not working correctly

On one machine here, when the artist goes to do a ram preview, they only get grey frames in the comp window. Either that or they get a freeze of the first frame in the render region, but no motion.
I have tried deleting prefs, zapping Pram, deleting the cache, purging memory. turning open GL on and off, all to no avail.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance

I'm not sure if RAM issues really show up during normal work. In most cases the operating system will constantly rearrange the memory allocation, so it may never touch upon that one damaged memory block. You wouldn't even know it, if it caused a crash once a week, because it could be anything. I'll admit that it's a far shot, but nonetheless one should not rule out what seems to be impossible at first sight. the only other thing I can think of would be a tool that suppresses screen refresh, which could be some widget ort system extension...

Winston is right. If it seems OK though, I would also add that you should make sure to check it at the same day and time you have tried to download the movie. I had the same thing happen to me and it turned out my speed was fine much of the time but was dropping to like a few hundred kbps from about 7-11 evenings (typically when we were trying to order a movie).

It is an option in the timeline window. Upper Right Corner...
Sometimes it causes problems. Maybe that is why it is turned off.
