Mp starts then freezes; cd won't open

I am trying to get the info from mp 2006 onto a new imac. Disk Util told me several days ago that hd was corrupted so start from original install disc then run disk repair. Because the cd/dvd won't open, I cannot boot from anything but hd. And the mouse doesn't work properly so I can't change startup preferences even though I have an external cd/dvd (with Snow Leopard on it) and a Lion usb stick. I have original install disk, disk warrior, disk genius, but can't run them.
I have made my mbp temporarily primary with most important programs and data; but not all. So what I am trying to do is 1)boot from somewhere other than hd, 2) then repair hd, 3) then time machine backup to ext hd, 4) then "restore" to Imac.
Any advice or help would be appreciated.
Jack

Hey guys, I really  appreciate your help and advice but I have to tell you that I am a 90 year old retired WWII and AF pilot and I am just not up to doing some of the things you recommend. But, I guess I am stubborn enough to want to fix it myself -- with your help, of course!
So:
  1) the hd is backed up on the ext drive.
2) I wll not put it on the Imac
3) I'll keep trying to fix the mp hd
4) if i do I will be back asking more about Migration Assistant
-- I hope it would let me select programs/data to be brought over
-- and if thunderbolt can be used (I have cables)
  5) Then I will install Lion on the MBP. Imac has it already. I bought office 2011 and, because Quicken is on windows, it will run ok on Lion.
And, if all else fails, I am prepared to live with the programs/data I have already pulled over: quicken, word, excel, mail. Then install other programs from discs/downloads.
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks for bearing with me and thanks again for the help.
Cheers.
Jack

  • Windows 7 64 bit: I just upgraded Firefox to 7.1 , I can't watch video on youtube, video freezes, then the browser freezes. I right click on the icon showing the page is open on the taskbar & click close then cancel, it starts then freezes again?

When I watch any video on youtube, every video first starts with short freezes then freezes the Firefox 7.1 Browser window. I have to right click on the icon that shows the browser is open on the taskbar at the bottom of windows and then click on close& cancel to get it to start working again. Also, on any site, I am having problems with links & functions that suddenly stop working, site connections being dropped frequently for no reason, my Modem is stable & internet shows connected. On facebook when I click a button(photos) it doesn't work, in Amazon I click on "submit" and the button stops functioning, in yahoo mail I can click on a button to "send" mail and it won't work. I can open them in IE9 or Chrome but not in Firefox. I have tried disabling all plugins.I also have tried disabling all but flash and still the problems persist. I have uninstalled and reinstalled FF.

Command + R *should* take it to a recovery console. Command + Option + P + R resets the PRAM, but that doesn't sound like your fix.If all of your buttons are working fine on OSX side, I would ignore PRAM / NVRAM / SMC reset tricks, since these are tested as working fine.
I would say you should probably reinstall the drivers for bootcamp. I tried this with 5 in Windows 8 and it gives you an option to repair. The reason I say this is because the UI isn't showing up, which means that it's using another driver.
If this doesn't work, go into device manager and then roll back to your previous settings.
One more thing comes to mind. Do you ever use Parallels or VMWare to load your bootcamp partition? They have their own driver packages which can cause some unwanted behavior when using windows natively.
One last thing you can do is try to by-pass the GUI powerplan entirely. You can use the Powercfg command, which, as it happens, has instructions on how to forcefully set the brightness values. You probably won't be able to make it through these instructions since you will get an error at some point, but that will give us more diagnostic information.
    Good luck!

  • Bridge in CS3 starts then freezes.

I have had trouble with Bridge ever since I installed CS3. On occasion I would have been using Bridge and randomly it would crash the whole computer necessitating a restart. As of a few days ago, it will start but then freeze. I click on a thumbnail, for instance, and nothing happens for a few seconds, then get the SBBOD, then nothing. I have to do a Force Quit on it. Start it again, same thing. It doesn't matter if I try to start it from PS or the Apps folder or Recent Items.
CS3 Extended on iMac 2.0 Core Duo 10.4.9

Just haven't had the time to install 10.4.11 and my CS3 is 10.0 (no time for 10.0.1 either) and Bridge is 2.1.1.9.
RAM is maxed at 2 gigs, I use a 250GB FW external as a scratch disk, and my HD has 363GB available. Like Hillary, tho', I misspoke. Bridge hasn't given me trouble ever since I loaded it but the troubles started soon after installing CS3. I have the same disk loaded on my PB G4 1.25 w/ 1GB of RAM and it works fine; I do have 10.4.11 installed on that machine however.

  • Help! Mail freeze: window won't open, nor will it close so I can restart

I've just had a strange problem with Mail. The window won't open - or has issues with opening (it did, but only briefly). It's generally having problems - its menus aren't dropping down - and I would like to quit and restart the computer (a Mac Mini). I've tried an apple q and nothing is happening. So the computer won't restart unless I force a shut down by manually holding down the button.
    Any suggestions most welcome…

  • Videos start then freeze

Just re-installed fresh version of Vista ultimate to try and fix this problem. Whenever I click on a Movie or TV show to watch, it starts and freezes 6-8 secs into it. Itunes (not responding), but it seems the media is still playing but frozen. Any help is appreciated.

You're not alone. Many people have encountered problems with iTunes videos on Windows Vista when the videos are stored on SATA disks.
No solution yet, sorry. If you have any other type of storage devices available to you (IDE drives, networked storage, some people have even reported success with USB flash drives), putting the videos onto that other storage seems to work.

  • PowerBook G4 has loud buzzing, then freezes, now won't start

I have a PowerBook G4 which started to make low "grinding" noises when it worked hard. It had done this for maybe a couple of months: sometimes the position (on lap or on table, etc) seemed to affect it. I always figured it was the fan(s). But a little while ago it suddenly started making a loud buzzing noise, like a fuzz-tone electric guitar or maybe an electric razor. If I put it to sleep the noise would start, and it would not start immediately upon re-awakening. I'm not really sure where the noise was coming from. Otherwise the computer was still functioning normally, so I figured a fan was going bad. Then it just froze, and I had to turn it off. Upon powering on, it got to the point with a gray screen, an Apple logo, and a bar that spins in a circle. Never more than that. I've booted the install disk and run Disk Utility: it found some big discrepancy, in a file allocation I think, but fixed it. Since then I've repaired and verified: disk appears OK. I've run the hardware tests and everything tests OK. I can also get the terminal by booting from CD 1, and can do directory listings of the disk contents. So the disk seems to be OK. I removed the suspect fan: the left one, and looked at it. Aside from some dust in the filter it looked and spun fine, as far as I could tell.
Upon booting in "verbose" mode, I get the following:
    member [46]: dsFindDirNodes returned - 14071, count = 2147483646
member [46]: Couldn't find root user. Sleeping and trying again.
    These two lines just repeat...
    I've got two questions here:
    1) What should I do to get the computer operational again? Is there a netinfo restore I can do, or should I reinstall the OS (10.4) from the install disks?
    2) How can I find out what caused the original problem?
    Thanks,
    Frank Huddleston

An update: I have reinstalled the OS, and all my user files were still there in Previous Systems, so I lost no data. The noise has recurred a few times, and I listened for its location: it really did sound as though it was coming from the upper left. No system freeze, though: the noise stopped on its own after the period of intense cpu activity finished. I have checked the disk with the Disk Utility, and it verifies (I did not do this in single-user mode, however). So far, so good: it looks as though my left rear fan is going bad.
Could that somehow cause the system lockup? If maybe the system temperature reached a high point?
I have installed the iStat widget and have looked at that when I hear the low "grinding" sound, and it shows the left rear fan running at about 1740 rpm. But the right fan is at 0. Is this normal?
The Apple Hardware reported no errors: I guess that means both fans are at least operational enough for the test. But what will make the system use the right fan as opposed to the left? Is maybe the right fan not coming on, then the left fan has to work too hard, and so now is failing? I have no idea what a "normal" rpm is for those fans.
Also, at this point maybe this topic is more suitable for another forum. If so, please advise.
Thanks for any help you(all) can give me.
    Frank H.

  • Safari freezes and won't open pages

Hi, I have been suffering from Safari freezing whilst opening the homepage, and then when click on any links it just stops loading anything. My homepage has been set to yahoo.co.uk, which partially opens, but then seems to not want to load images. The text and links show, but the links just don't react when clicked on. This has been going on for a couple of weeks now. I also have IE installed, which is fine, but I want to migrate to Safari for web use as more and more sites are recommending it.
    Can anyone help?
I also have an iTunes problem, which may or may not be related, but I'll post that in the relevant discussion.

Updating to Safari 6 for Lion may help.
Click here >  Safari Quits Every Time Opened: Apple Support Communities
Click the link posted by:  gregoryfromcork
That will automatically download this file >  Safari6Lion.pkg.download
    Now quit Safari.
Go to your Downloads folder and double click that file and follow the instructions for installing.
Then restart your Mac, try Safari.

  • ITunes gone-then after reinstall-won't open-error msg "unknown error (-50)"

While running, iTunes disappeared; then reinstalled; now states: "The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (-50)."
Also, keep getting msg that "parts of QuickTime are out-of-date. Updating to latest version could help this." We have, and still get that msg. Help -- can't access songs for ipod...!!!

You might be getting two different problems here at once, Wendy. The (-50) could be a problem with your Apple Application Support or possibly an iTunes library file issue. The QuickTime message usually indicates old QuickTime componentry lurking in unorthodox locations on the PC.
We'll start work on the (-50) first. First we'll try working out if it's an AAS issue or a library file issue. (This isn't going to be a cure in itself, but it should eliminate one or the other of the possibilities.)
Head into your user accounts control panel and create a new user account with full administrative rights.
Now log out of your usual user account, and log into the new account. (Don't use fast user switching to move between accounts.)
Now try launching iTunes in the new user account. Does it eventually open to a blank library screen, or do you get another (-50) instead?

  • When I try to play youtube videos, it will start then freeze.

Hi, for about a week now my ipod will start a youtube video then just freeze 2 seconds into it; this happens with most videos. Also, I can't play my apps, it will do the same thing.

Try restarting your iPod. If that doesnt work try a hard reset which is you hold down the power button and the home button for about 15 seconds until it restarts. That should fix it.

  • CS4 Installs but then INdesign , Illustrator won't open

    Hello,
Can anyone offer me advice on this issue with CS4? My DVDs Install ok but when trying to open InDesign and Illustrator I get the message, 'sorry InDesign needs to close' I then send an error report to Microsoft - but the product didn't open at all to start with. Same happens with Illustrator, Flash etc. The only programs that will open are Photoshop and Fireworks (after reading other forum members problems with not even being able to install the program I kind of feel lucky for those small pluses!). I've spoken to Adobe support 5 times and reinstalled the product about 10 times after following their instructions.
I was using InDesign CS3 trial and had no problems with that (I did uninstall it and deactivate it before trying to install CS4).
I have all the required system requirement, 2 GIGs RAM, Window XP with service pack 3.
Owing to this I cannot go on with my class assignments now so it's pretty disappointing, but if anyone has any clues I'd be very grateful, thankyou,
    Allison

Thanks so much for your responses guys. I had a go at these sugestions, but nothing worked. Adobe phone support continued to offer patient support but nothing was working - anyway, as I was going to get a PC upgrade in the near future I went ahead and got it ahead of time on Monday - there was no problems with the install on this PC and all programs open up fine -( I've got a better graphics card etc and Windows Vista), kind regards, Allison

  • HT5517 When sending a tv show or movie to my apple Tv, it starts, then freezes, the little "wheelie" things appears and then nothing. This is new and I've never had trouble before. Any ideas ?

As above, when sending a TV show or movie to my Apple TV, it starts, goes for a few seconds, freezes, the "wheel" appaears on the bottom and then stops. Any ideas ?
This is a recent development  and has not happend previously.

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
Reset the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings)
Restore the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Restore)

  • After i start firefox several files won t open they contain .dll suffix

i just click them closed and then firefox starts 9 of them can i resolve this newer versions don t resolve this thx

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 23: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    *(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

  • Flash player video streaming starts then freezes

I can't play videos in IE9 or Chrome without it freezeing during playback.  It will load 30 -60 seconds of video then it stops. I have tried reloading and adjusting all settings.  I have disabled my Virus Software and tried other steps but none of them work.  I have a fast internet connection and downloads of other natures work very well.  Only my flash player files are affected.  I really don't know what to try next. I am not getting any error messages.  Any suggestions?

It is affected by all adobe flash sites I have visited. Pilotonline.com; wavy.com; cox.net; youtube just to name a few. On the cox site it affected the internet speed test which is flash based. Starts fast the stops in the middle just like the videos.

  • Itunes won't open, won't force quit, won't anything

This problem started about a month ago and now it's critical.
When I click the itunes icon, it bounces and then freezes. itunes won't open. It also won't force quit. I can't shut down because, it says, itunes won't quit. I have to hold down the power button 7 seconds to shut down and then restart. My IT guy at work (who is a Mac person) showed me how to repair permissions and the first half dozen or so times this happened, that worked. Now it won't. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes. I've tried reinstalling and repairing permissions. I've rebooted and repaired and reinstalled.
This is the kind of thing I switched from PCs to get away with.
Does anyone have any ideas? I really need to be able to use itunes.
    Thanks,
    Teresa

    Teresa
Here are some basic to try in turn, see if any one will help:
Ensure that you have the latest version of the OS and Quicktime and iTunes.
    1. Delete the com.apple.iTunes.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    2. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.
    Regards
    TD

  • Firefox 3.6 won't open, it comes up in the task manager and then disappears after about 3 seconds

Firefox 3.6 will not open, I have noticed that it loads in the task manager in windows vista 32 bit, after 3 seconds it then disappears and won't open, I have reinstalled firefox, all this did was to loose all my passwords and bookmarks, I have disabled my anti virus which is kaspersky internet security 2011, firefox still won't open, I have uninstalled various programmes and that does not work and I have loaded my laptop into safe mode and firefox still won't open,
if anyone can help then it will be most appreciated because I am so frustrated, everything I do seems not to work with firefox, yet my other browser which is safari works every time, there was only a problem with firefox 3 days ago, I have been using firefox for over 1 and half years with no problems, I have also have scanned my pc for viruses but this has not solved the problem.

Do any of the possible causes listed at https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+hangs#Hang_at_exit fit?
Your Firefox settings and info are kept in a folder separate from the Firefox program, called your profile folder. Try creating a test profile, to see if the problem still occurs. See [[Managing profiles]]
