Mp3 files mysteriously converting themselves to jpeg's

a very weird thing has been happening to my music collection in itunes. some of the files (mainly, mp3, but other formats also) seemed unplayable. when i clicked on the track and "get info", it shows that the file - although keeping the same track name - is now a jpeg file of a family photo in my iphoto library. moreover, on just about every album i loaded into itunes, at least a couple of tracks are showing up like this with no discernible pattern as to which ones or why.
is this a bug, a virus, or have i done something silly?
thanks...

Now that's a weird one.

  • Photoshop files mysteriously converted to textedit?

I went to open a bunch of photos that were in Photoshop on my Mac- and they were mysteriously converted to textedit?
How can I convert it back to it's proper format- Photoshop?
I tried to open command I (information) and "open with Photoshop", and that didn't work- kept saying Photoshop won't recognize format..
Any answers on why this happened?

Having an extension on a file will indicate to a program what kind of file it is. If your Mac sees a file and doesn't know what kind it is it may just default to TextEdit even if TE doesn't know how to open that kind of file. If you put a Photoshop extension (.psd ? - I don't know) at the end of a file it will tell the Mac that this is a Photoshop file. Be careful because if you put a Photoshop extension on an Office Excel file it will confuse the computer and Excel when it tries to open the file! If these are JPEG files and you put .jpeg at the end of the file it may have several effects. One will be it will get automatically flagged to open in whatever program is designated in LaunchServices to open jpeg files. That may be Preview but you can change this with the get info feature. The other may be (and I don't have PS to test this) that if Photoshop sees a file without an extension it may have to approach it carefully, or not at all, because it is an unknown. If it has the .jpeg or .jpg extension then it knows it is a JPEG format file (because you told it) and can open it immediately.
Use a utility such as PSRenamer or Renamer4Mac to add extensions to groups of files.
I hope this solved the problem for you.

  • Is it possible to improve the quality of an MP3 file by converting to aiff?

    itunes 11.0.4 (4)
I am contemplating the costs/benefits of purchasing digital downloads of mp3/mp4 files instead of purchasing actual cds.  I am aware that the MP files are compressed and are thus lower quality.  I have already purachased some digital music, from Amazon, and am now burning cds.  While creating playlists and burning, I noticed the option 'convert to aiff'.  I did this with one album.  I now have doubles of each track of that album, the original mp3 and the converted aiff.  The aiff file size of one song, for example, is 71MB compared to 12MB for the mp3 version.
Did my aiff conversion do anything to improve the quality of my mp3 files?  If so, to what extent? E.g., how close is the quality to that of a cd?  The added file size of the aiff must represent some difference.  I am asking because I am skeptical that my converting an mp3 using itunes could improve the quality of that with which I began...i.e., the mp3 file.  Is this conversion effectively 'uncompressing' the mp3?
If an aiff conversion increases quality, I see no reason to worry about mp3 compression.  It would make sense, economically, to purcahse mp3s and then convert to aiff, saving time, money, and transportation costs.
Finally, is there anyway to convert to aiff just for the purpose of creating one playlist and then burning so that I do not have to maintain double files in my library?  Thanks for answers.

All you accomplished by converting the file to AIFF was to make the file much larger. As AnaMusic said, there's no way to put back the information that was lost during the process of compressing to MP3. If you want CD quality, you'll either need to buy the CDs and import them yourself or see if the album is available through one of the download stores that sell music in CD quality or better, such as iTrax, HDTracks or eClassical. They've only been able to license a small subset of what's available, but you might be fortunate.

  • Office Docs and Excel files mysteriously converting to tmp files

I experienced this twice this month with two different customers. What happens is certain folders with excell and word docs will be moved inside other folders and the files will be gone only some random character file.tmp (
54F81A6B.tmp) The first incident happend on a synology diskstation DS213 Shared Drive where the only fix was to reset the Diskstation and restore from backup. The second incident was on a Windows Home server share.  Both computers
are windows 7 pro 64 with office 2013. Im starting to think this is a bug with office 2013. I scanned for viruses and none found. Where do i start to resolve this?

    Hi,
Did the issue only occur with the Office files? Do you install some sync software?
I recommend we try to install the Office 2013 SP1.
Next, as far as I know, the Office temp file will display when we open it or use it. We may try to use
Process Monitor to collect which program open/block the Office threads during you copying/pasting.

  • How to copy MP3 files to SD Smart Card

I am trying to create a smart card for my Zumo 550 to allow me to play MP3 files on my motorcycle. My problem is getting the MP3 files onto the smart card. I get about 150 files loaded and then it won't let me load any more. I get a message about being unable to form new directory or something with the files so that it won't allow me to store anymore. My capacity on the 2GBSD card is only about 25% full, so I have the room. I highlight my MP3 files after converting from audio files in itunes and then I open up the smart card via My Computer, and then I click and drag to the smart card open window..works great for the first 150 or so files, then it won't load anymore. Any helpful suggestions why I can't get anymore files onto my smart card??
    Thsnks,
    Tooth Doctor

Thanks for the input. I don't have my laptop with me at work, so I can't remember the exact wording of the message that pops up...I have tried other files, I have tried loading albums of artists so maybe naming the folders or files wouldn't be so complex,....neither of which worked. I had attempted this on my old laptop, using Windows XP and thought when I got my new one which now uses Vista, that maybe things would work better, but didn't seem to help....I was wondering if there is a different way to copy of MP3 files from Itunes playlist to the Smart card media....I looked at "exporting" the files, but they come out as txt files, not mp3 files. I will get back on this evening with the exact wording and see if you or anyone can assist me....

  • I am trying to convert a whole lot of MP3 files and I keep getting error -50, on some of the tracks, but a significant percentage of them.

I have several thousand mp3 files I'd like to convert to AAC, to allow Itunes Match to have a better chance at actually getting a pozitive match.
Howver, after doing maybe 30 or so files I get an error - Error occured converting the file "<track Name>". An unknown error occurred (-50).
    Any ideas anyone?

Doing a quick Google search with this search criterea "iTunes An unknown error occurred (-50)" found several types of situations for that error code. I suggest you use the same search critera in a search and see if anything applies.
An Apple article found Here has to do with downloading music from iTunes. I assume that does not apply to you, but may be worth looking at.

You can use Adobe's free DNG converter to convert proprietary raws to the universal DNG raw format. Here are the links:
Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Adobe DNG Converter 9.0
Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Macintosh : Adobe DNG Converter 9.0
Converting to JPEG will be an extra step afterwards.

  • I converted aif files to mp3 files in I tunes so I could put them on a flash drive.  Now when I transfer an album to the flash drive I get both the aif files and the mp3 files in the flash drive.  How do I get the iTunes to only copy the smaller file?

My suggestion to use the smart playlist was more along the lines of making one list with rules to show everything in your library as long as it was kind "mpeg" (= mp3).
Smart playlists cannot be edited manually, only by changing the rules.  You can use them as the basis for another smart playlist though.
There is added overhead to using smart playlists, so don't go overboard.

  • How can I convert the ringtone (m4r file) I made into an mp3 file on itunes?

How can I convert the ringtone (m4r file) that I made into an mp3 file on iTunes? I want to put it on a CD, but I can't figure out how to convert it. I didn't buy it, I made it by converting a YouTube video into an mp3 (I wanted to get the little song in the video for a ringtone.) I'm not sure what to do.

    Hello ed2345,
Thanks for the help, but this is not the problem.
It's hard to describe the problem, but I'll try it again, this time with pictures.
I was left with the following folders in the iTunes Downloads folder.
    http://www.picfront.org/d/7yb3
These TMP Folders have a download.m4a and a Info.plist file.
After moving the audio files in iTunes a bit I get this.
    http://www.picfront.org/d/7yb2
As you can see no other Information for the download.m4a than the length.
That's how the .m4p file looks like
    http://www.picfront.org/d/7yb1
And this is how the same .m4a file currently looks
    http://www.picfront.org/d/7yb0
Like I said, I could edit all these download.m4a files by myself but that would leave some information out.
Note: Sorry, I hope the links do not spam you with annoying ads. I don't get any but I was told that there can be some annoying one.

  • Can i convert AIFF audio file into an MP3 file please?

Can i convert AIFF audio file into an MP3 file please? I will be doing this on an imac 2008 model. thank you for help!

Since this is the Logic forum and you may be working in Logic, you dont even need iTunes. To convert Aiff to MP3:
    1 - Go to the Bin>Audio Files
2 - Select the Audio File you want to convert ( and not a region or edit of it)
3 - Go to Audio File next to the Link icon ( Audio - Edit - View ) and down the menu to Copy/Convert.. gives lots of options

Everybody's wrong wrong wrong. You don't need garageband. Select the song, go to info. You need to select a start and stop time for the song that can't be any longer than 40 seconds in length. Then in advanced mode you convert the song to acc. once done locate the file on the computer. it should end in .m4a . Change the a to an r so it reads .m4r Drag the file to the desktop, double click and it ends up in ringtones folder.
