Mp3 players - mac compatability  ? (NOT itunes compatability )

hi
i want to buy a cheap mp3 player ...
btw i dont use itunes music store so i dont need any compatability
with itunes buttons and all that.
i want to use it for my audio book collection.
I'm a bit confused about the mp3 player- mac compatability debate.
Seems like when alot of people say mp3 players are bot compatable with macs - what they mean is not compatable with itunes music store downloads.
Am i correct in thinking that all mp3 players can be mounted as external drives and i could drag n drop folders of mp3s - and that this is a universal rule of thumb ?
If this is so, does it not mean that all mp3 players are effectivly compatable with macs ? If it doesnt , then why ?
Thanks for helping me work this out
d

I think, as you said, it is that they have not written any software to specifically work with the Mac. Also, even if they think it should work with a Mac, in the case of a Mass Storage Device, if they haven't specifically tested their products on the Mac, they are not going to claim any compatibility to avoid angry customers if it turns out to not work as smooth as they assumed.
I use a flash drive, 512MB Sandisk model, and previous used a 128MB Lexar version. In both cases I never really had any trouble using these in Mac and Windows systems and in fact have used the same flash drive in Win 2000, Win ME, Win XP, Mac OS X, and Mac 9.2.2 systems and it works on all of them. It shows up as a removable drive and you can drag and drop to or from the flash drive just like any other drive on the system.
Because I want the flash drive to work on both Windows and Mac systems, I don't format with a Mac format but always use DOS format (as it is called under Mac OS). If formatting on a Windows system, be sure to use Fat32 format rather than NTFS. Mac OS X.3 can read NTFS format, but not write to it. I think Tiger might be able to write to it now, but Fat32 is pretty universal and will work on all the above mentioned operating systems.
My guess is that Sony will work just fine on your Mac.

  • Mp3 Players suddenly will not play on published website

For 2 years, the two MP3 included on one particular page successfully played when published within iWeb and then uploaded to the internet.
Today, upon checking the site, on this particular page, the MP3 players appeared with '?'. Whereas, on other pages MP3 players are loaded and could be played.
I have remounted the page several times to no avail, then went back to iTunes and re-loaded the two songs on separate Playlists and chose MP3 player file format to ensure I have good versions.
The two MP3 players were drag/dropped from iTune onto a new page where they play perfectly well, but upon publishing the page within iWeb, the new versions still would not publish.
I am at a loss as what to do next. This is a very well-visited page with 2 beautiful songs on it.
Why, after 2 years of successfully publishing and uploading this page to the internet, the two MP3 players do not function as noted above.
I apparently have enough web space, but my internet speed is low.
Would the low speed be a factor?
I know that during business hours, my time allotment wanes and have to wait until 2:00 a.m. to do the Media upload. Try to access my Domain Host techie takes several days meanwhile the page remains on website with dysfunctional MP3 players, which is not good for viewers.
I am now questioning if this is the problem, that is, low internet speed? That can be resolved by purchasing higher internet speed.
    HELP!
Thank you, in advance for your assistance.

How are you loading the audio into iWeb?
Where are you publishing to - MobileMe or another server?
If you are using QuickTime and are publishing to a "real" server, make sure your audio file is present in the "media" folder on the server.
Have a look at this section for more information on playing audio on your site......

  • Airtunes streaming skips in iTunes 10 Mac but not iTunes windows

I have had problems with airtunes for a fair while now, definately the whole time i've had itunes 10, but recently noticed that using the same computer (MBP booted to Windows 7 using iTunes Windows) it streams perfectly. So now I'm really confused. Help!
    Problem:
Here is the problem. Mac iTunes 10, play music streaming to me Airport express, will start to play then stop, pause, start, pause, play.... aarrrggg. Doesn't matter which song.
    Environment:
I have Airport Extreme connected to Linksys modem. Wireless g/n network connecting to Airport express which is hard wired to stereo. Wireless network is perfect except for this airtunes issue, and support various mobile devices plus n and g apple notebooks. My main computer is Macbook Pro with dual boot windows 7 and mac snow leopard. I've recently found that itunes only behaves badly in Mac mode!
    Diagnosis:
Have tried switching wireless channel from 1, 7, 11 etc to remove interferrence - but identified that this does not remove the issue.
Have tried streaming airtunes from iTunes windows on same computer and works FINE
Have tried streaming airtunes from iTunes on iPhone 3GS with iOS5 and works about 50% (skipping, but not as bad as from mac, but unacceptable quality)
Have tried streaming airtunes from iTunes on Macbook Pro with snow leopard and iTunes 10 and basically skips constantly

ASk in the DW firum and be much more specific. Web page rendering issues are specific to specific versions of browsers and you may simply be using some bad code that messes up your page.

  • My mac computer has suddenly stpped recognising my ipad as a device. something about the aps not being compatable

My Mac computer has suddenly stopped recognising my ipad as a device - something to do with not recognising some apps. What can I do to fix it?

Make sure your Mac is running iTunes version 11.

  • ITunes with other MP3 Players

I am SICK and tired of my iPod not working correctly... I want to buy another MP3 player... can I use the iTunes songs (that I already paid a ridiculous amount of money on) with systems other than apple?

Purchases from the store are in protected AAC format which will not be compatible with anything but an iPod. If you change your purchase to mp3 format, you will have to burn to an audio CD, use the audio CD to re-import as mp3.
I nearly forgot this link from Scott P. & Hudgie which will explain iTunes compatibility with non-iPod devices. Unfortunately, the short answer is that they won't work.

  • Supports many Rio MP3 players, but not Rio Forge?

In brief: iTunes 7 appears to support many models of Rio MP3 players, but not the Rio Forge. Why not? Can future versions of iTunes include support for the Rio Forge?
I recently upgraded from a PowerBook G4 to a MacBook Pro. On the PB, I could use my Rio Forge MP3 player with iTunes easily. I just had to download the iTunes plug-in from the MP3 player manufacturer's web site. However, I just now discovered that this plug-in is not compatible with Intel processors. That's the manufacturer's problem, right? Or is it?
My wife tried her new Zen Nano Plus MP3 player with iTunes. Without installing any drivers, iTunes recognized her player. It thought it was a "Nomad MuVo", which is another player model from the same manufacturer, but it works.
I concluded that the support for the Zen Nano (as a Nomad MuVo) must be built into iTunes. I looked through the files and found that's true. I also found that there were several Rio MP3 players mentioned, including the Rio Chiba and Rio Cali, which use the same iTunes plug-in from the manufacturer as the Rio Forge. If that same plug-in can support all those MP3 player models, maybe it would be a small matter to extend iTunes' support to include the Rio Forge.
    How about it, iTunes developers?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iTunes 7, Rio Forge

It may work with other players but iTunes does not actually "support" any players except the iPod.

  • Using other MP3 players with ITunes

Can anyone give me some guidance? My little girl wants an ipod after having great fun listening to my ipod shuffle. All my music is now stored on iTunes so the question is; does itunes support any other MP3 players or will it only support ipods - I was going to buy her a cheap £15 player.
Any help would be gratefully recieved.

    JoJo70,
To elaborate slightly on what polydorus said, cheap mp3 players play mp3 format files only, full stop. The one I have used (in the same price range you are talking about) connects to the PC via USB, and opens in Windows as a folder. You can then copy/paste files into it, or delete files that are already in it. It truly does not care if iTunes is present or not.
To your comment that "All my music is now stored on iTunes": not really. Your music is stored on your hard drive, and iTunes only contains a library that points to it. There is no reason you can't use the same song files for some non-iTunes purpose, and that is what you will be doing with your daughter's player.
Sooner or later however, she will want an iPod.

  • ITunes w/ other MP3 players

I just purchased an iPod touch. My children have cheap MP3 players. I do not want to manage multiple music libraries and playlists. Is there any way to use iTunes to sync other non Apple MP3 players?

iTunes does not natively support players other than an iPod. But you may be able to get direct support by using iTunes Agent. Give it a try; it may work for you. Note that the tracks in iTunes must be in a format the kids' players can handle; if they're not now in an appropriate format, you'll need to have iTunes make new versions of the tracks in the format the player needs.
You can also just use the procedure provided by the player, getting the tracks directly out of the iTunes Music folder.
    Regards.

  • Itunes and multiple users/mp3 players

I got my wife an ipod for christmas and subscribed to itunes. I have since noticed that purchased songs are not availible to sync with the kids mp3 players as well. Will I tunes not allow purchased music to be put on all of our mp3 players? Do I have to get an account for every kid or device?

+I looked at amazon and walmart and several titles are not availible in mp3 format and come as wma with drm+
If you are using a mix of iPod and non-Apple players, you should keep all your music in MP3 format. It is the only format that is compatible across the board.
The iTunes Music Store does not sell MP3s, so it is not where you should be shopping. As Katrina noted, amazon.com would be a better choice for you.
You may have seem protected WMA files at walmart.com, but you did not see them at amazon.com. Amazon sells only MP3s, with no DRM in sight.
If there is some song that you really want and cannot find a non-DRM version, then you may have to resort to DRM. It will not play in at least one of your players, but you can always use the correct program - iTunes or Windows Media - to burn it to an audio CD.

  • Itunes compatibility problems?

I am having problems with my itunes compatibility settings, apparently. Whenever I open itunes, a window opens telling me that "itunes.exe has been set to run in compatibility mode for an older version of Windows. For best results, turn off compatibility mode for itunes before you open it". Then, itunes will open but the colors on my computer will become very distorted and the images will look three times as big as they are supposed to.
I have gone to "properties" in itunes setup and turned off compatibility mode, and also tried every combination of older versions of windows and different color settings. I've uninstalled and reinstalled itunes about 10 times. I just got a new ipod nano, too, and tried installing itunes with the ipod with the installation cd, but nothing seems to work.
    It's really frustrating!
If anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate your advice!
    Thanks!

    Dell xps 400 Windows XP

Just double-checking... make sure this is what you've done:
    Go to:
    C:\Program Files\iTunes
RightClick on the icon for iTunes application
    Compatibility tab
"Run this program in compatibility mode" is UNchecked
    Click OK
    Restart the computer
    Try to open iTunes.
If this is the case, make sure you have Service Pack 2 installed on your Windows XP.
Click on Start, right click on My Computer and click on Properties.
If you need to update go to Start -> All Programs -> Windows Update
If you're up to date and compatibility mode is off, you may need to reinstall.
    To Uninstall:
Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs
    Select iTunes, click on Change/Remove
    Go ahead and remove it
(NOTE: Your music files are saved in \MyMusic\iTunes)
Once it's done, go ahead and download/install from the site

If you do not lock that folder immediately after deleting all the contents, it will simply populate again (Resume - a "feature" in Lion). You do that by doing a Get Info (highlight folder and press Command + I keys), unlock the lock at the bottom, enter your admin password, then check the box to lock the folder. lock the lock and you're done.
Yes, that is correct. The alternative is to quit all applications prior to logging out. Lion will then have a chance to remove the saved states.

    And, for the OP:
It has also been a regular feature of Mac OS to automatically open any window that was open at shutdown. To avoit that behavior, simply close any Finder windows and  properly quit applications by closing their window and using Command + Q (or File >Quit).
This was true only for the Finder. Prior to Lion, no other apps would launch unless they were included in the Login Items for the account. And the OS would not restore windows for other apps.
A very small number of apps (TextWrangler is an example) implemented this capability prior to Lion. They could restore previously opened windows. But that is an application feature, and can be controlled by the application's preferences. Lion implements it at the system level, and users have virtually no control on a per application basis.
