Mp3 won't play. "The Resource map is incorrect".

Symptom:
When I double click an mp3 in finder, quicktime gives an error:
*"The movie could not be opened. The resource map is incorrect"*
When I press spacebar to try and hear it, the preview shows the artwork, but no music plays.
*What I've tried:*
When I do a "get info", finder correctly reports that it is a "+Mp3 Audio+" and not a movie
I tried to reinstall quicktime 7.5.5 to no avail.
The music opens fine in itunes.
Any ideas? Thanks!

How is the drive where the clips are stored, formatted?
Macs use HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) formatting which provides for support of Resource Forks in files.
Windows FAT format does not provide this functionality -it is a so called flat format -Resource Forks are stripped from the file. Your Mac needs that information to tell the operating system how to handle the files, for instance, what application opens them.
If your drive is indeed FAT formatted as most "off the shelf" drives are, you will have to reformat (Erase) it using Disk Utility and recapture the footage. This will of course destroy all information on the drive.

  • General error: The resource map is incorrect?

I'm getting a 'General Error' with a number of clips on the timeline. I go to the media, try to open it in Quicktime, and get a pop-up: 'The resource map is incorrect.'
Is any repair possible, or do I have to recapture the material? It would be interesting to know what the 'resource map' is, and if there is anything I might have done personally to make it 'incorrect'.

For some reason all of my quicktime files on my external hard drive will no longer open.  I get this error :  The resource map is incorrect.
Is there anyway to fix these files or get them open?

  • "Resource map is incorrect" - msg.  can't open QT mov.

I thought I safely backed up a number of files, including movies and stills to an external drive. Now when I try to open these, I get the following message:
*The movie could not be opened. The resource map is incorrect.*
This is a first for me - and a scary one, although I think I have other copies of most of these files on another drive. I wonder what happened? Googling around, it seems others have had this experience - possibly a resource fork being stripped in the data transfer...and apparently, virtually no way to reconstitute or recover, although someone thought that a ResEdit expert (I'm not that) might have some luck. The same thing happens when I copy these files to the desktop.
With the jpegs, I'm getting a message: *Couldn't open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn't recognize.*
I'm at a loss...you'd think your backed up files are safe. As I recall, these were simply dragged from files on my computer to the plugged in external drive - as I've done for years. Oddly enough, a few of the movies in certain folders do open up - apparently not affected.
A real mystery. Any help/suggestions appreciated.
    k.

    Thanks BD and Japamac,
MS DOS/FAT - a Windows format? I don't think so. This is a Seagate Barracuda 200 GB/7200 RPM typical of drives I use to back up files. It's possible it wasn't formatted correctly, although every drive I have gets the usual initiation. Get Info tells me its Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
One of the files that does open is a 5.83 GB QT movie.
I'm going to drag a few files into this drive to see what happens: OK, dragging a 1.67 GB movie into the external drive gives me an error message (Error code - 36): "Finder cannot complete operation because some data in (file name) could not be read or written" This is a file that plays fine in QT player on my computer. Let' try a few jpgs": These are Graphic Converter copies, but GC isn't recognizing them (Unknown format message.) Tried a few more QT files and Picture Viewer ones - all getting Error-36.
Could the drive be corrupted in some way?
I think Japamac's idea to use cloning from now on is a good one..but D&D never failed me until now...
What about wiping this drive and reformatting? Any recommended optional procedure in Drive Utility?
Also: yes, this is FW, and I've had no issues with the cable so far. Will try another external drive to make sure.

i added some songs to my itunes but now my itunes won't play the songs - it says it can't locate the song although the Itunes match is turned on and it says all of my songs are in the cloud - anyone have any thoughts

Did you delete the hard copy of the songs from your computer after you uploaded them?
If so just highlight the said songs and delete but do not check the box that says delete from iCloud and your songs should play fine.
This happens when the original file is moved from the location that itunes was looking for it at and if you did this because you uploaded it then it will still be in the cloud you just need itunes to read from cloud and not think it's supposed to be finding the original file

  • When I ask Siri to play a song it goes to the song but won't play the song

when I ask Siri to play a song it goes to the song but won't play the song.  The song shows when I open the music app, but the bar does not move and there is no sound.  Even if I hit pause then play nothing happens.  If I go back to the playlists and select another playlist or song then music plays.

After doing and changing EVERYTHING on that page, I ended up re-installing Quicktime by itself and finally that solved the problem. Thank you for the advice page though, it had a lot of good information on it that related to my problem.

Both the AVI and the MOV file extensions refer to the file container and not the compressed data the file contains. Both are generic file containers in that each may contain any valid combination of audio and/or video data that is compatible with the codec component configuration of the system on which the file was created. On the other hand, whether a file is playback compatible, conversion compatible, and/or edit compatible depends on the data actually contained in the file container. So, you are basically dealing with two separate issues here—the container and what is inside it.
Basically, if you want to make your files ediit compatible with iMovie, you must change your file container to one that is acceptable to iMovie and convert the data to edit compatible audio and/or video compression formats as may be necessary. The best approach is to determine what codecs were actually used to create the original AVI files and add them to your system if possible. In most cases a codec package like Perian can be added to your system's codec component configuration to may the AVI file playable. Once they are playable, in the QT 7 app then they can be chnged or converted to file types and compression formats that can be edited in iMovie. (While Perian handles most codecs commonly used to create AVI files, it does not handle all possibilities and, while the Perian codec package still works under cureent Mac OS versions, its development group has decided to drop further development/support of the package.)
Background: AVI is a file container originally developed by Microsoft back in 1992 but for which official support was discontinued about 11 years. Despite its limitations, Windows users still tend to use this file based on its open source ease of use and generic nature, thus, making its use so popular that most users are unwilling to switch to more modern but less generic file types. Since some AVI legacy compression formats have never been transcoded for the Mac or use beyond OS 9 or OS X PPC platforms, it is often important to know what specific compression formats are contained in the AVI file to know which codecs to add to your system and which not to add in order to avoid possible codec conflicts.
You can use many different converters to convert AVI files to iMovie edit compatible files. Most third-party apps contain their own buit-in codecs which do not relay on the Mac codec component configuration. Free ones, like HandBrake, usually have limited conversion capabilities while those that have more varied outputs are usually commercial in nature and will cost you additional cash. QT 7 Pro or the free MPEG Streamclip app allow you to access you own system's component configuration and use any available codec component like DV, AIC, MPEG-4, H.264, Photo JPEG, etc.—all of which are iMovie compatible for editing purposes—but only after making the AVI file QT 7 player compatible.
In order to determine what compression formats wewre used in your AVI files you can
    1) Try checking the Finder "Info" window,
    2) Use the "Inspector", "Media Info", or "Properties" window of any player app that will open the file, or
    3) Use a general media utility app like "MediaInfo" to read the file characteristics.

  • My iPad and iPod touch won't play the music I choose. Has anyone any idea what the problem could be?

    Hi,
Since the IOS 5.0 update my iPad 2 and iPod touch (3e generation) won't play the music I choose. I choose a song from Michael Jackson for example and it's going to play something completely different. The images has changed aswel, so it is a bit strange.
I treind to sincronise them again, but this doesn't change a thing. Has anyone any idea what could be the problem and how to solve it?
    Kind Regards,

So just in case anyone else ever runs into this...
I solved the issue and it was that between the plug of the new earbuds being slightly thicker than the Apple earpods, and the width of the case that I was using for my iPod, there wasn't a connection being made to activate the remote function.
I took off the case and now the earbuds work exactly as they should!

I downloaded a song and it can up in my music library but it won't play the song

Depending upon what country that you are in (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) then try deleting the track from the Music app on your iPad and redownload it via the Purchased tab in the iTunes store app (or via the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes).
If you aren't in a country where you can re-download music or if the re-downloaded version also doesn't works then try the 'report a problem' page to contact iTunes Support : http://reportaproblem.apple.com
If the 'report a problem' link doesn't work then you can try contacting iTunes support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/- click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

  • Resource map is incorrect

I have a file showing a quicktime icon in a Final Cut Pro 5 folder. When I try to open it in Quicktime I get a resource map is incorrect error. Trying to open it in FCP5 give a general error.
What is a resource map is incorrect error and what would cause it?
    Any to correct it?
    Thanks

The "Google" in my post above contains the search parameters that I put into Safari.
I entered "resource map quicktime" -without the quotes. Maybe it only works properly if you use Safari as that is also part of the URL:
    http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en-us&q=resourcemapquicktime&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
The link to the thread here on AD was: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6141662
Depending on the browser, you might have to right click, choose copy link and paste it in the address bar.

  • Itunes 7 won't play, the curser does not move.

I have loaded the new Direct X, I have no plug ins, Windows is up to date. I loaded Quicktime separately, after which it worked for about an hour. It also worked for a short time after I added the folder in which all my music is in. I have also reinstalled itunes, restarted my computer. I have followed all the suggestions and it still won't play. What can I do? Please fix, or tell me something new that I can do. I use itunes hours everyday and this is a real problem for me.
