Mp3s / music starting over after exiting the player

Greetings. I've been having an issue with my iPhone forgetting where it’s at in a song when I exit the player and go back later.
I play long mp3's, up to three or four hours. I listen to about 20 minutes, then I pause it, use the home button to get back to the main screen and go about my day. I do this several times a day. About once every five times, when i go back into the player, it has forgotten where I’m at in the mp3 and it’s at the beginning of the song. It’s extremely frustrating to the point that when I pause it I have to try and remember the counter in case it forgets where it’s at.
I am running the 8 gig, 3rd generation using 3.1.2. It’s been happening for as long as I’ve had the phone. About a year in March.
Please help! I can't take it anymore trying to find where i've left off in the mp3! Sometimes it takes forever scanning back and forth!

The standard warranty is for one year, which begins on the purchase date. If you plan on keeping this iPhone for another year, you can purchase and register the AppleCare extended warranty anytime before the standard one year warranty expires, which extends the standard one year warranty by an additional year along with including free telephone support for the entire period.
I decided to purchase the AppleCare extended warranty for my 3G since I planned on keeping it for two years. I purchased my 3G a year and a half ago and I didn't have any problems until recently. Out of the blue, my iPhone no longer remained connected to my wi-fi network at home and my wireless network would appear and then disappear as an available wi-fi network to select. There was no change after any of the troubleshooting steps I tried which included restoring my iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from my iPhone's backup. I made an appointment at an Apple store and I was in and out of the store in 15 minutes with an exchange under warranty.
I usually don't purchase an extended warranty for anything, but since my cell phone is my only telephone access (I don't have a landline at home) and I've come to depend on my iPhone much more than any other cell phone I've used, I decided it was a good idea - especially since I'll be using my 3G until the next iPhone model is released which should end up being a full two years or close to it. I became eligible for a phone upgrade with AT&T in December, but I'm glad I didn't have to make use of it earlier than planned.
I can't say I have or haven't experienced the same since this is not something I need or want to make use of.
