.MP4 720x480 displayed as 640x480

Hello All,
I am trying to create an MP4 (h.264 video) with a 720x480 interlaced source (PC not MAC). The goal here is a DVD equivalent file that can be projected onto a wall. MPEG-2 files are NTSC 720x480 and are displayed correctly as 640x480 on television monitors.
Question 1) If I set my MPEG-4 profile to 640x480 VGA will it still be a
720x480 file that will display as 640x480? (this is the goal)
Question 2) If no to answer 1, will leaving the image size as "current" display
the file correctly as 640x480?
Question 3) If no to answer 2, what image size option will allow the file to
remain 720x480 but display as 640x480?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer my question. I've been searching for a while but can't seem to find the answer.

Hello Paolo, and welcome to the Final Cut Express Forum.
FCE supports certain fixed resolutions & codecs, namely DV (720x480 DV-NTSC or 720x576 DV-PAL) and Apple Intermediate Codec (1280x720p 25/30 or 1920x1080i 25/30). HDV and AVCHD are transcoded to AIC during capture from a camcorder.
If you are using material based on other codecs and/or nonstandard frame sizes you must convert them before importing into FCE. MPEG Streamclip is an excellent utility for doing these conversions.
If you absolutely require a specific, nonstandard resolution (e.g. 640x480) then you will need Final Cut Studio.
What is the source of your video ... and why do you want to maintain 640x480 size?

  • Satellite A100-250: Display resolution 640x480 under W2k

    Today, I purchased a Toshiba Satellite A100-250.
Since I have quite some software I want to run on it that works far better under Windows 2000, I installed Win2k on the laptop.
And since a fresh Windows Install gave me a 640x480 resolution, I went to the ATI-site to download the Radeon Drivers.
But, when I downloaded those (6-2_xp-2k_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_30152.zip) and tried to install it, I got two errors.
The first one is: "Severe. INF error. Video driver not found."
The second one is: "Severe. Setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup."
So I checked the Device Manager. Under "Other devices", there's a listing of "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)".
No matter what I try (Windows Update, Windows CD, standard inf files), I can't get a video driver running.
Can someone please tell me what's going on here?
And can anyone give me a solution?

    Hi
As far as I know it's not advisable to use not Toshiba graphic drivers.
The other drivers are designed for the usage on the desktop PCs and not for the notebooks.
The graphic cards on the notebooks are not similar with the desktop PC graphic cards.
The problem is that I don't found a Toshiba graphic driver for the W2k for this unit.
But I have got a idea.
You can use the Windows XP on you unit. The best way is to use the Toshiba recovery CD. The Windows XP supports a compatibility mode.
If you right click on an exe file and choose the properties so you will see the compatibility tab.
There you can enable the option and choose the W2k.

  • Tell tale signs that a clip is a dv stream?

    Hello all,
I have a question about how to recognize a dv stream clip when I meet it. I've read through the forums and now understand that FCP pretty much hates dv streams. I also have learned that the easy ways to know a dv stream clip are:
--know that it came from iMovie (or potentially another non-FCP app)
--see that the file extension is ".dv"
But here's where it gets curious for me... I have some clips that end in ".mov". When I put them in FCP, they behave a heck of a lot like dv streams, in that they need rendering (because the audio beeps). The client who brought me these clips "doesn't know" where they came from. But I suspect that these are dv streams inside the Quicktime mov container, but I don't know how to confirm that for sure...
In Quicktime Pro, if I open an .mov that is, say in h.264, if I choose get info, it will tell me that it's h.264. However, when I lined up a known DV/NTSC clip with my suspected dv stream clip and compared the info windows, the only difference I can see is that the DV/NTSC clip lists this:
    DV, 720 x 480 (640 x 480), Millions
    16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
while the dv stream clip suspect only lists:
    DV, 720 x 480 (640 x 480), Millions
    DV, Stereo, 32.000 kHz
Everything else is exactly the same!
Long winded way to ask my question, but does anyone know a sure-fire way to confirm that a clip is a dv stream? Or is the info I have above the only way to... guess?
    Thanks,
    David

    Randy,
You're right, dropping these things in to Compressor gives me a much faster way of being able to flip through the videos to see which is which. I still don't what I feel is a really solid answer to my original question, just a hypothesis. The clips that play fine have these characteristics:
    Encoded Bounds:720x480
    Display Bounds: 640x480
Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC CCIR 601/DV
    Native Field Dominance: Bottom First
    Frame Rate: 29.97
Audio: 16-bit Integer (Big Endian) Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
The ones that don't work are like this:
    Encoded Bounds:720x480
    Display Bounds: 640x480
Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC CCIR 601/DV
    Native Field Dominance: Bottom First
    Frame Rate: 29.97
    Audio: DV Stereo (L R), 32.000kHz
I believe that, therefor, that the hypothesis to my original question is that .mov files that are dv streams show their tell-tale signs of being dv streams in the characteristics of the audio. It says "DV",... and then in FCP behaves like DV stream... therefor, I believe it to be a DV stream. Sound good?
Thank you all for your help figuring this out.

  • GNOME 3.4 changing remembered automount and display settings

    Here's an interesting observation.
My setup is the following: notebook computer + external display.
    2 user accounts A and B and I'm using GNOME 3.4 in fall-back mode.
I think it's important to know, account A was created before I bought external display and started using it as a main one. Account B was created when I already used external display.
So, I use only external display at 1920x1200 resolution:
    xrandr
    Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1200, maximum 8192 x 8192
    VGA-0 connected 1920x1200+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 518mm x 324mm
       1920x1200      60.0*+
       1920x1080      60.0
       1600x1200      60.0
       1680x1050      60.0
       1280x1024      60.0
       1280x960       60.0
       1024x768       60.0
       800x600        60.3
       640x480        60.0
       720x400        70.1
LVDS connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
       1280x800       60.0 +
       1280x720       59.9
       1152x768       59.8
       1024x768       59.9
       800x600        59.9
       848x480        59.7
       720x480        59.7
       640x480        59.4
I also have a bunch of external USB drives connected to this notebook computer and they get automounted with the help of udisks2 helper:
    mount |grep udis
    /dev/sdb1 on /run/media/A/9d244934-d9fa-4a8e-8dd7-5c595f5518cf type ext2 (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uhelper=udisks2)
So, I boot my Arch Linux, external display is connected and notebook is configured (by clicking Fn+Display key to choose to output video signal to external display only), I see GDM. So far so good, only external display is used, choosing automatically correct native resolution of 1920x1200.
I enter user account password in GDM, GNOME starts loading.
What happens for user A is that:
    - notebook's display gets lit up, showing video output in its native resolution of 1280x800
    - external display duplicates the video output apparently in this 1280x800 resolution (because the image is kind of zoomed and unscaled, blurred: because it's not a native resolution)
    - I have to click Fn+Display key to switch available modes and choose one when only external display is used. When it's done, native resolution of 1920x1200 is chosen for external display and all is good.
However, when I resume from sleep notebook when logged in as user A, even though the external display is used in native resolution, just as it's supposed to be, I can see that notebook's screen is glowing, but not showing any video output. I need then to turn off power for it pushing Fn+Sun (an icon depicting sun with one half filled, and the other empty signifying on/off modes) .
The USB disks. When GNOME is loaded for user A I can see in Places my drives, but I have to manually click them to get them mounted. When resuming from sleep, I have to do it again. They're automatically detected, but aren't mounted.
All of that shouldn't be normally happening. Why?
Because for user B none of that is true.
External display works as expected on GNOME's start, when resuming from sleep under user B notebook's screen never isn't glowing. USB disks are automounted when user session is loaded, or OS is resumed from sleep.
Obviously, I want the same for user A. But there aren't really any settings to tweak, at least none that I know of or could find myself.
It would seem that something like session settings are different for these two user accounts, but I know really little about session management in GNOME. Might be something else.
I would appreciate it if you shared your insights or ideas as to how to make user A GNOME session to behave much like user B's in respect to displays and mounting of external USB drives.

I have the same problem as you. I can't access the system settings nor the online accounts thing. I guess we will have to wait till the next patch or something. Here is the bug report.

  • Nothing displayed on TV through HDMI.

I have an Acer 4820T with Intel HD 3000 graphics and am trying to use a Sharp LC-37GA8E as a second display. It works in Windows 7 without problems but not in Arch using arandr/xrandr. The TV will change resolution as you try different settings but the screen is blank. Arandr/xrandr does work perfectly with an LG M2262D through HDMI.

  • 720x480 -- SD and Widescreen not 4:3 or 16:9

    Hi,
This is one of those topics that I've not seen answered definitively.
NTSC DV is 720x480 square pixels.
If it's NTSC SD, the final display is 640x480 -- a 4:3 "frame" or screen aspect ratio. The pixels are squished (taller than wide) such that the pixel aspect ratio is .9091. But if you multiply 720 by .9091 you get 654.552. What happens to those extra 14.552 pixels?
If it's NTSC widescreen, the final display is 853.333x480 -- a 16:9 "frame" or screen aspect ratio. In this case the pixels are stretched (wider than tall) such that the pixel aspect ratio is 1.2121. But if you multiply 720 by 1.2121 you get 872.712. What happens to those extra 19.37867 pixels?
Thanks to whomever clears this up or points me to a definitive answer.
    Jeff S

The DV NTSC pixels have a pixel aspect ratio of 0.91 (nonsquare). DV pixels, which are always rectangular, are vertically oriented in systems producing NTSC video ...
    Ann,
I should have worded my initial statement differently. But, it is essentially correct. It should say:
NTSC DV starts its life as 720x480 square pixels.
NTSC displays those pixels at a frame ratio of 4:3 (SD) or 16:9 (Widescreen). Those pixels are altered -- stretched wider or narrower -- to accomodate those frame ratios. But, those pixels taken on their own -- when they are just pixels and not displayed as NTSC signals -- are square.
A nifty way to see this, is to use the Export Frame feature in the P Pro Program Monitor. Use it on an NTSC SD clip (in an SD sequence) and on an NTSC Widescreen clip (in a widescreen sequence). In both cases the resulting image will be 720x480 square pixels.
    Jeff

  • How did it become 720x480??

I imported some footage from a video camera into iMovie a few years ago and just noticed that this footage is 720x480 rather than 640x480. How could this have happened? Does this mean the aspect ratio has been modified?
It is possible that I wrote out the footage in full DV and then moved it back into iMovie. Perhaps this is when the aspect ratio got messed up.

I imported some footage from a video camera into iMovie a few years ago and just noticed that this footage is 720x480 rather than 640x480.
This is probably normal if your file was captured/imported in the NTSC standard. If you open the file in the QT Player and check the "Inspector" window, you will probably see somethings like this:
As you can see the format is listed as "720 x 480 (640 x 480)" which indicates that while the file will display as 720 x 480 on a "rectangular" pixel device, it is displayed properly on a "square" pixel device as "640 x 480" in QT applications unless the "Current Size" settings have been modified.

  • Xrandr providers : display all of them?

    Hi all,
I have 2 graphics cards, one integrated Intel and one discrete ATI.
Both are listed as providers with xrandr :
    $ xrandr --listproviders
    Providers: number : 2
Provider 0: id: 0x8c cap: 0xf, Source Output, Sink Output, Source Offload, Sink Offload crtcs: 2 outputs: 2 associated providers: 0 name:radeon
Provider 1: id: 0x45 cap: 0xb, Source Output, Sink Output, Sink Offload crtcs: 2 outputs: 4 associated providers: 0 name:Intel
But actually only the ATI card is showing something, the Intel card displays a black screen... :-/
Please, how can I display something on both card at the same time ?
For information here is xrandr output, only ATI card outputs are shown :

  • Quad video output problem @ 640x480

When I connect my new Quad to a TV with the DVI to Video adapter there are some glitchy looking artifacts at the very top of the display. Some pixels of random colors but most of them are just black. This only affects the top 30 pixels or so and only on the TV (not on my main screen). The problem only exists when displaying at 640x480 and with overscan on. The problem persists whether using s-vid or composite cable. I have the stock graphics card, the nVideo 6600. I'll post a picture of the glitch to this thread when I can get my hands on a digital camera.

I have same problem: lines going horizontaly from down to up..same video card...maybe flash bios would help but i'm not shure..still have that problem..

  • No Display on TV - Booting Thru BootCamp

I definitely don't consider myself an idiot when it comes to computers, but what seems to be something SO simple just isn't working.
I tried to connect my mac mini to my TV via DVI to S-Video converter. Nothing is showing up on the screen. I've searched a lot of online articles on how to do this and it seems like I should just be able to plug it in and -- voila -- have picture and just adjust the display. But I'm not getting anything.
My TV has 2 input sections (Video 1 and Video 2). My DVD player is plugged into #1 and Xbox is plugged into #2. Since #1 is the only one with S-Video, I disconnected my DVD player and plugged the Mini into #1. No picture. Just a blank blue screen (which it shows if the input device is turned off)
So I plugged the DVD player back in and tried plugging the Mini into the DVD player. The DVD player has 2 inputs (L1 and L2). I've used L2 to play my no-console-necessary Wheel of Fortune game before and it works fine. So I plugged the S-Video in there. Instead of getting the blue screen, I get a black screen (which it usually does if the device is turned on, but no DVD is inserted). I changed the channel on the DVD player between L1 and L2 and swapped the S-video between the two inputs with no results.
I booted up the mini using a monitor and changed the display to 640x480 on the Mac side and 800x600 on the Windows side (which is the smallest for each) and I'm still getting nothing.
Is there something I'm missing? Another setting maybe? Does it have anything to do with the fact that I'm starting up using BootCamp? If so, what can I hit on the keyboard to get it to boot directly to OS X?
    TIA!
    ~Coral

    I had a similar problem-
Then I remembered something I read in the tv's manual-
It said to have everything hooked up and then plug in the tv.
    IT WORKED.
Maybe it's not hot swappable like usb.

  • 10.3.9  booting classic 9.2.2  on ibook G3 display  srinks

I posted the following as a reply to someone with similar problem in" ibook dual usb display" discussions board,-to no avail except being told i may have installed the wrong OS- but thought that i may get a better response if i post it to OSX board - sorry if the duplication is not appropriate - classic works fine in osx
In OS 10.9.3 i boot to OS 9 directly the display screen starts out full size 1024x768 but than reverts to a half size 800x600 - i do not have the original cd's that came with the ibook - i have original 0sx 10.3 cd's but they do not include classic system - have been told that there was an extra install disk that had os9 classic system, but i do not have it and can not find it anywhere- 9.2.2 runs fine from osx (10.3.9) classic, but i have one proprietary software package that will not boot from classic and i have to boot into 9 directly to get that software to run, which it does - BUT - only having a half size screen is a pain. Is there a workaround to get the system to recognise the full screen display? The monitor control panel indicates i have two displays one 640x480 one 1024x768 - somewhere read that by plugging in external monitor jack and reinstalling 9 solved the problem - do not have cable any discussion on this would be helpful!
I just plugged a rgb monitor into the rgb port and the ibook boots using 9.2.2 and the screen is full size on both the RGB and the LCD - monitor control panel shows both lcd and rgb at 1024x768 when i disconnect the rgb plug the screen stays full size - BUT upon reboot with the RGB plug out it boots to the half screen again - boot with the RGB monitor plugged in , but not powered up it boots to a full screen - i am stumped - id like to use this ibook with a full screen without having to plug in a RGB monitor to have it work correctly - is it a OS problem? or what any ideas??????
I am currently reinstalling 9.2.2 on the ibook with a full screen after starting up with the RGB monitor plugged in but do not have much hope that it will reboot full screen - That did NOT work
thanks in advance for any assistance - you all have been nothing but wonderful in getting to the bottom of problems. thanks!

  • Masked QT movie doesn't display correctly in Safari

I've only tested this in Safari so far, but here's my problem. I have a QuickTime video that I've letterboxed with black bars across the top and bottom. I applied a mask to get rid of the bars. The masked video plays perfectly in QuickTime Player. However, when I play it in Safari (embedded or just in its own window), there's a thin black bar on the left side and the right side looses a good 50 or more pixels, so my video looks off-center. If I take the mask off, it works fine. Any suggestions?
I think it may have something to do with the 720x480 vs. 640x480 thing (which I still don't fully understand. I tried creating a mask at 720x480 and still get the same problem.

Could you post a URL so we can check?
Rather than use a mask you could use an app like MPEG Streamclip (free) to "crop" the file.

I don't have an xorg.conf file at the moment.

I think I have narrowed down the cause to Cairocompmgr, when I turn that off I can switch between my monitors and operate at the correct resolutions.
I don't have any 10-monitor.conf at the moment and even simple xrandr commands like xrandr --output LVDS --auto --VGA-0 --right-of LVDS were making things go crazy. I haven't tried doing dual head yet without cairocompmgr, mind.
Edit: Confirming that with cairocompmgr disabled, everything works as expected.

  • Display Setting Problem

I accidentally chose an unsupported display. If I boot the mini it starts up and then the display flashes "no support." If I start up in safe mode everything is very large. I go to system preferences and there is not a display selection.
Is there a way to rest this? I have done the control option P R start up, and it did not help.
I did the 10 second hold down where the computer bongs for a long time on start up. No luck. I'm at my wits end.
    CG

The lack of a displays preference pane when you safe boot is something I have not come across before - indeed, when I messed up the display settings of a mini connected to a TV and ended up with a display that wouldn't sync, I was able to resolve the problem by safe booting and resetting the resolution and refresh rate in the display preferences.
One thing I have found has worked on some Macs where the display settings have been set out of range and the display therefore doesn't work is to disconnect the display completely and then boot the mini. Once it has started up and there's been sufficient time elapsed for the desktop to appear, then reconnect the display again.
What that OUGHT to do is cause the mini to set a default minimum display setting when it fails to detect a display. 640x480 or 800x600. When you reconnect the display, the desktop should then appear at that default minima.
You should re-enable automatic logins (the checkmark in the security preference pane) before you do this since the mini may not detect the absence of the display before it cycles into the user's desktop.
Even if this works, it's of some concern that under safe mode the preference pane is missing. To me, that would indicate the problem is a little deeper than merely preference settings, but this is worth a try.

  • 640x480 Desktop Issue

My Mac Mini is plugged into an LCD TV monitor, the max res. it will display is 640x480
My problem is that when I run software update the "I agree" button on the license terms is OFF SCREEN so I cannot click it and proceed.
I get this with many other menus and options.
Is there a way I can scroll the desktop or some software that will allow me to do this.
    Thanks
    Dave

Open the Universal Access pane of System Preferences and turn on the Zoom option under the Seeing pane. Options include automatically displaying the highlighted control and scrolling whenever the cursor is at the edge of the screen.
