Mp4 = AVI won't open correctly - what codec?

I have an avi file from a client that is in MPEG-4 format. Its five years old or so and was created in a Windows environment...
I can get the audio, but just a white screen in QTime player - - - -
How can I find out what codec to use here? Thanks.

Try playing it with the great free VLC player. It plays almost everything you throw at it from the pc world. It also plays DVDs ignoring the region code etc etc. The latest version shoul be able to do some transcoding. Havn't tried that out.

Both iPhotos open to a default library (#2) which has 300+ photos, I attempted to "switch to library" under the file tab in iPhoto and tried to choose "other library" which had most of my photos. When I attempt to open it, it doesn't do anything. I can see it and there are 2 libraries but it won't open.
Have you tried to open your old iPhoto library by double-clicking it directly, instead of using the File menu? That should work, if you are running iPhoto '11 and the library has been created by that version or an older version. DO you get an error message, if you select the library directly in the Finder?
I checked and it is the latest version of iPhoto.
Is it iPhoto '11, version 6.0.5? "Latest version" is ambiguous, because it will depend on your system version.

I uninstalled 4.0 and reinstalled 3.6 using there instructions from your forum...
If you still want to downgrade to Firefox 3.6.* you can uninstall Firefox 4, but do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data". If you select that option it will delete your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.
You can then install Firefox 3.6.* available from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html - it will automatically use your current bookmarks, passwords etc.
To avoid possible problems with downgrading, I recommend going to your profile folder and deleting the following files if they exist - extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite and localstore.rdf. Deleting these files will force Firefox to rebuild the list of installed extensions, checking their compatibility, and reset toolbar customizations.

The directions you posted look good to me, though I would not have deleted the files, there is no harm, Firefox will recreate them.
I expect that you have an extension that is bad probably one bad enough to be listed in

I would suggest going back to Firefox 4.0.1 and trying to fix your problems there. In either case you will need to open in Firefox Safe Mode, see [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_Mode Safe Mode - MozillaZine Knowledge Base] which will disable extensions and I would expect that you would be able to run Firefox that way. If you can run okay only in Safe Mode then that almost certain means an extension problem.
If you can use menus but not use "Enter" on the location bar that proably points to
"AVG Safe Search" extension and you would have to follow directions in Problematic extensions to reinstall AVG Free without the Link Scanner Component. If you can't easily identify the extension causing problems then see

Firefox 4.0 is not a problem you thought it was, since you can customize the appearance.

The make of the disk doesn't really tell us how your data is being backed up onto that disk. Do you know what software it uses?
For example Time Machine copies files every hour in a way that is not bootable, but you can extract those files & get all your data back into a working OS.
Carbon Copy Cloner duplicates a disk in a way that is bootable - it would appear when holding alt at startup so you could use that to boot & inspect the state of the internal disk.
It may also be Seagate's own software that does something different.
Please try recovery mode, if that works you can try repairing the disk in Disk Utility.

If that works, select Disk Utility & see if the internal disk can be repaired in the first aid tab.
Recovery mode can also download OS X & reinstall it, however you really need to know if the backup contains everything before that is attempted, otherwise you may lose data. The OS is also around 5GB so you may have issues if your internet is capped or unstable etc.

Now Logic won't open. What should I do?

I had two versions of Logic Pro on my laptop (Logic Pro 8 and Logic Pro), so I deleted the older version. Now Logic won't open. What should I do? I also upgraded to Mavericks lastnight, but it worked fine until just now.

Restore what you deleted from your backups? Use Time Machine to go back to a time prior to the problem occuring? (You do make backups yes? If not, now you know why you should start doing so!)
Failing that,
Launch Logic Pro and then as soon as you have cliced on the icon, hold down the option key and keep holding it down until eitehr you see a dialog box or Lagic completes loading...
This stops Logic loading the last project or template you used... in case the project or template has become corrupted in some way...
If that doesn't work.. do the same again but this time hold down the Control Key....
This makes logic start without loading Audio so you can then go in and select the internal Audio in Logics Audo preferences in casse its a problem with some drivers or Core Audio itself...

Autocad 2012 is NOT Mavericks compatble.
So, you either need to find and pay for an upgrade AutoCad 2013 which is compatible with OS X Mavericks or pay to upgrade to AutoCad 2014.
If you have a cloned backup of your previous system before upgrading to Mavericks, it would have been easy to revert back to your previous OS X version.
If you don't have a previous backup, your only option, now, is to create a backup of your system and important data , now, to an external hard drive. Once you have a backup, you need to purchase and clean install OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion (if you haven't purchase Mt. Lion already).

Have you tried power cycling your iPad? shutting it down then resttarting it. Or resetting it by holding down the home and power button until you see the silver apple.

Premiere Elements 12 Files Won't Open Correctly in Windows 8 (64 bit)

I haven't found a good format yet that will opening correctly in Windows 8. Some open with video only, others open with audio only, one opens video and audio but the image is elongated. Nearly all of the file formats I tried that wouldn't open in Windows 8 were fine on a Vista PC

Please give the specific properties of the source media that you are trying to import into Premiere Elements 12 on Windows 8 64 bit. I have Premiere Elements 12 on Windows 8.1, previously 8, 64 bit and am not having the same type of issue that you present.
For your source video, what is
Video Compression
Audio Compression
Frame Size
Frame Rate
Interlace or Progressive
File extension
Pixel Aspect Ratio
What is the camera that these videos are coming from - brand/model/settings for recording?
The project preset should match the properties of the source media. In Premiere Elements 12, the program takes over the job of doing the setting of the project preset. Sometimes it does it right. Sometimes not. When not, then you set the project preset manually based on what you know are the properties of your source media. So, it is important to know the properties of the source media to set up the project correctly.
There are certain video compression that are not compatible with Premiere Elements (any version), others incompatible on some computers but not others. So back to need for properties for your source videos to sort out what we are dealing with.
Please put together the information requested, and we will work with you to get the importing, editing, and exporting of the program that you want (if possible).

Iphoto 6.0.6 won't open correctly on desktop

I have a desktop Mac containing OSX 10.6.8
It had Iphoto 6.0.6 and will not open correctly, it shows that its on in the desktop but nothing displays, tried connecting cameras and Iphones but wont open fullscreen.
It just becomes visible when i click the side buttons of my mouse, then i cant click on it to open it.
Any help would be fantastic.

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

Photoshop CS4, Saved a Tiff file now won't open correctly

I saved a file as a .tif and it saved as normal then I shut down Photoshop and then the PC. The next day when I try to open the file it doesn't open correctly it opens but the right hand side of the photo is on the left and the left hand side of the image is now on the right, its like its been cut in half and put pack the wrong way.
It also didn't open with the layers only as a locked background. When I view the file in the icon it looks fine until I open it.

Laura, I'd guess this is not promising for you. TIFF files tend to be large, so I am wondering if you might have closed Photosho and the PC before it had finished saving? Do you remember the pixel size of the original image, and what is the file size in Mb? I am not sure how Photoshop treats TIFF images, depite them owning the file format after buying it from Aldus a few years ago, but it sounds like it was saved as a series of tiles, and the information about the order of those tiles is corrupted. You might be able to Google TIF file recovery program, but it is unlikely you'll get the full file back with all the information saved with it.
If you don't get a better answer, keep a weather out for when Chris Cox is posting, and bump this thread.

It sounds like you moved Mail out of the Applications folder, and mapped that Mail to the Dock. Go to the Applications folder and see if your current operating system compatible Mail program is in the Applications folder. Note 10.7 is Lion. 10.6.8 and earlier versions of 10.6 are Snow Leopard. You posted in the wrong forum for Lion. We can ask a moderator move the thread once you verify what operating system you are running, and update your profile to be more accurate.
