Mp4 files are black

Hi,
I have some mp4 files that were created from an iPhone that were supplied to me. I can see them fine in QuickTime.
when I import them in to FCP,  the video is black.
is there a way to fix this, or do they need to supply me with something different? If so, what do I tell them?
thanks,
Dave

Use MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 (free software) to convert the media to something like ProRes 422, then import into FCP X.
MPEG Streamclip can cope with many codecs.

  • TIFF and JPG Files Are Black?

I have posted this question twice before but didn’t get it resolved. I really need to get some help on this.
I have some old projects that I use in the classroom while I am teaching. They are TIFF images and often have sound clips with them. I create slideshows and then convert them to tracks. This has been working really well.
Suddenly, all TIFF or JPG files are black. Old files in old projects and new ones I import are all black. PICT files are okay and I am doing new projects using them, but I cannot go back and edit old projects because all of the TIFFs are black.
Can anyone figure out why this happened and how to resolve the issue?
    Thanks!
    Mike

I have seen this when I save over a graphic while the fcp project is still open. The tifs come back inside fcp when I restart the app then trash my render files. If these are really old fcp projects try disconnecting your media (the tif and jpeg files), trashing your render files then reconnecting your media using the locate tool.

  • Mp4 files are playing back green

All of the mp4 files on my computer are suddenly playing back mostly green and pink video. I can hear the audio but the thumbnail and the video are green. If I hover over the thumbnail and press play they begin to play fine. I can then press the space bar while the thumbnail is playing and the file will open up and play normally using quick view. I am running 10.9.5 and also have the most rent version of VLC installed.

    >I reset the TV but even it didn't work. It still didn't play the mp4 files
    Did you do this correctly?
I mean you have to rest to default settings. In such case every option which has been changed, would be set to the default.
To do that you have to go to:
    System Setup -> Reset TV
When the set powers back on, the Quick Setup screen will appear. Press OK to advance the setup and perform an auto tune.
Furthermore the user manual provides a list of Media Player Supported formats (page 93)
There is a list of supported formats for movie files and music:
    _Music_ mp4 files are supported.
The files extension should be .m4a
The audio codec should be MPEG-2/4 LC-AAC
The max number of files in the folder: 1000
    The _movie_ mp4 files:
The supported file extension: .mp4 or .m4v
    The supported video codec: H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC), MPEG-4 part12,14
    Supported audio codec: MPEG-1/2 Layer3, MPEG-2/4 LC-AAC and MPEG-4 HE-AAC

  • How can I format a movie file so it plays on FF3.6? my mp4 files are blocked due to a quicktime issue.

Creating a landing page for a client with embedded video. She prefers not to embed a YouTube video on her site. Is there a way I can embed an mp4 file in her site so that it will play in firefox 3.6? Now it is trying to launch quicktime, which firefox blocks due to extension instability. Thx.

If you have the latest QuickTime version then it should work.
You can also look at players like JW Player: http://www.longtailvideo.com/
    http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/jw-player/13/embedding-flash
    http://player.longtailvideo.com/player.swf
You can also consider to recode the file to ogg to allow Firefox to play the file natively.

  • AVI files are black during download from my Casio EX-Z750

they will play audio with Quicktime 7 but no video just a white screen. Downloaded Divx to no avail. In iPhoto they show as a movie but are black also. Anyone has an issue with this? Latest version of Quicktime and all the lastest patches and updates on the Mac.......

    Kim:
Is this camera new or were you able to download and play movies before? If it's the latter did you run any updaters of any sort before this problem began. Also try playing them with VLC (you can get it from VersionTracker.com).
    Do you Twango?

  • Certain mp4 files are not importing into iMovie

I downloaded various files from the video page at a blog website [ http://www.911blogger.com/ ]; they're mp4 QuickTime. They won't properly import into iMovie, and quickly return a "An Unknown Error Has Occured" message box.
This is confusing, especially since iMovie can make mp4 movies. And since mp4 is a QuickTime format -- and QuickTime is made by Apple, who also makes iMovie.
It doesn't matter what size of file; none import. I asked the guys who own/operate the blog website if they put any special locking features on their video file downloads from their podcasts, and they said they (paraphrasing) "didn't do anything except use an iPod video converter" or something to that effect.
    So, any idea's?

I have QuickTime 7.1.1 installed, with a license for QuickTime Pro.
QuickTime Pro shouldn't affect the ability to import to iMovie. All QuickTime Pro does is enable certain movie editing commands in QuickTime Player. It doesn't add any codecs or new elements to QuickTime.
But third-party QuickTime codecs could certainly be affecting iMovie 6's ability to import a movie. If any are installed, they should be temporarily removed and the Mac restarted.
    They are discussed here:

  • HT4550 pdf files are black in Safari 5.1.7, why?

Many times when I wish to view pdf files using Safari 5.1.7 on my MacBook Pro with 10.6.8 , I get a black screen.  How can I fix this?

    Back up all data.
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Automatically add files to iTunes not processing mp4 files on Windows 8.1

I have iTunes 12.1.1.4 install on a Windows 8 (x64) system.  I have been using iTunes for quite some time and my library is located at c:\Music.  On earlier versions (version 10 of iTunes for example) I would drop an MP4 file into c:\Music\Automatically Add to iTunes" directory and iTunes would process this file and add to either the movies or TV Shows section.
I have not used this feature in some time but now have started to.  Currently, if I place the mp4 in that directory, iTunes does not do anything with the video.  I have gotten to using "Add Folder to Library" and iTunes will then process the directory.  I do have "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" checked.
How can I get iTunes to recognize that a file has been placed in this directory and process it?

    Two possibilities:
iTunes has processed the file but has categorized it as "Home Movies" rather than other video kinds - in this case you'll be able to find it under that heading in iTunes.  Note that there's a bug in iTunes 12 where even if you then change the media kind - for example, to "TV Show" or "Movie" - it will be shown in the new category in the iTunes UI but the files will still be in the "Home Movies" folder under iTunes Media
If iTunes has not been able to process the file, you should find within a Not Added folder under Automatically Add to iTunes - the most likely cause of this is that the MP4 files are using a codec that is not compatible with iTunes.

  • Bridge cs6 can't preview xdcam ex (MP4) file

In Bridge CS 5.5 I could preview my files. Bridge does not play/preview the file. But I it plays in Prelude, Premiere and AE . . . Should I re-install Bridge? I search the Forum and it seems I'm the only one with this problem . . . Help will be appreciated . . .
    Thanks
    Patrice

A reinstall rarely solves problems.  I would reset preferences first.  Hold Crtl key down and start Bridge.  YOu should get a reset window.
CS6 does well with mp4 files.  BUT, not all mp4 files are the same.

  • Loss of quality when importing Mp4 files

When I import Mp4s into iMovie HD 6.0.3, the video quality suffers. And if there's any movement (panning/tilting) in the video, edges also look wavy once imported.
These Mp4 files are not from a camera. Rather, the original video was on VHS. I dubbed it to DVD, then ripped the DVDs, creating the Mp4 files (which look fine in Quicktime 7.4).
I'm hoping someone here can tell me if I can adjust settings somewhere so that the mp4 files will appear just in iMovie HD 6.0.3.

These Mp4 files are not from a camera. Rather, the original video was on VHS. I dubbed it to DVD, then ripped the DVDs, creating the Mp4 files (which look fine in Quicktime 7.4).
Lets see: VHS > mpg-2 > mpg4 - that is a LOT of conversion steps if you expect to maintain quality.
I tell people to think of each conversion step as a 'hammer' that 'beats' on your data because every conversion step costs you quality. I doubt there is anything magic you can do to your mpg-4 files.
The BEST thing for you to do would be to transfer your VHS images directly into iMovie. Many miniDV camcorders have a pass-through feature that makes this easy. My second choice would be to use something like DVDxDV or MPEG Streamclip to convert the video on the DVDs to DV video for use in iMovie.

  • N79 unable to play .mp4 files

hi i have recently buyed n79.
i have converted the .avi files to .mp4 and saved the file into my mobile
but when i tried to play, it is showing the error message.
please kindly help me in this regard.

It's probably because you didn't use a compatible format.
Not all MP4 files are the same. They could be a number of codecs or levels that are not supported. Also resolutions.

  • .mov files are grey and not able to import

Help.  I download files from my Contour helmet cam into my Imac but can't import them into Imovie because they're grey.  Some earlier files are black and "loadable" ... what's up?  Is there some importing ritual I screwed up?

I read similar posts about this problem and am having it myself with my Powerbook G4 550Mhz running OS X 10.4.5. I have 768 MB of RAM and a 60 gig HD so I know it's not memory that's the problem. Happened only when I recently upgraded iTunes. I tried the proposed fix about removing the CD Info.cidb file but it didn't work for me. Any other proposed solutions that someone has heard of? This is a real bummer as I've not had a single problem with this Powerbook in the 3+ years I've had it.

  • Will imovie 11 (version 9.0.8) be able to import the MP4 files from the Canon Vixia HF R 400?

I realize the camcorder is just available now but I assume the MP4 files are the same as in the R300 from last year. I just want to be sure that imovie 11 will be able to import andedit the MP4 files from the canon Vixia before I purchase the camera.I understand that imovie has trouble with some MP4 files and works fine with other ones. I don't want to transcode into another format and generate gigantic files of data. I also understand that the videos with AVCHD has better video but I prefer a easier workflow. I imagine one day Apple in it's infinate wisdom will eventually support AVCHD.

    two options:
    • not exhausting - go to
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html
these devices are tested by Apple 'bout functioning with iM
    choose one = works. guaranteed.
    • exhausting - learn about codecs, containers, bitrates .....
in short: AVCHD is a standard, details e.g. here at wiki
standard means: some settings are conform, some not. example: no 120fps in AVCHD.
    note: there's vers1 and there's a new vers.2 .......
    mp4 - just a container, or 'wrapper'.
means: like a box of chocolate, you could never know what's inside. example: 120fps in mp4.
    but ........
    AVCHD nor mp4 are 'codecs'.
    here comes h.264 - could be in a AVCHD/mts, could be in a mp4.
    iMovie: respects standards.
    does NOT import non-standards-conform files/videos/datas.
encode a 1080video as 30p/h264 = would 'fit' into AVCHD
    encode a 1080video as 60p/h264 = would 'fit' into AVCHD2 (=not supported by iM11), would 'fit' into mp4 (= iM11 supported) ...
mp4 is more ... 'open minded', more general; lacks therefor stuff like gps location data and other meta-tags.
the next iM13 should support AVCHD2, it's bigger brother FCPX does .....
    last word:
iMovie is NO general 'cuts all movin' pictures'-app!
it is meant for consumer convenience with consumer devices.
=> supports the most 'popular' standards. not anything.

  • Metadata in video (mp4) files

I just converted 14 years of DV Video-Material to mp4 clips using handbrake and imported the clips in a newly created LR3 catalogue.
So far so good. After tagging the clips with keywords and descriptions I tried to save the metadata into the clips and here the proble starts.
As far as I know mp4 files are capable to carry metadata. When I use itunes or other programs like SimpleMovieX I can save and read metatdata directly from mp4 files. But in LR3 none of this data is displayed when I try to import a mp4 file already containing metadata or when I try to read metadata from an already imported file. It seems like LR3 is solely managing this kind of information in its database and there is no data interchange between the metadata section of the mp4 files and LR3. My expectation was obviously different.
    Does anybody made similar experiences?

    I think that is correct.

  • Photoshop CS5 Extended won't covert mp4 files to layers?

I recently downloaded cs5 and it won't download .mp4 files to layers. whenever i go to file > import > video frames to layers, the mp4 files are greyed out and i can only click on .avi files.
there is no high quality converter from mp4 to avi, so it's quite frustrating.
any ideas about what may be wrong?
    thanks,
    catherine.

    Hi Catherine
Try importing it as a layer inside an already open file:
Layer > Video Layers > New Video Layer From File
If that still doesn't work, try:
    File>Place
but it will be opened as a smart object
