MP4 Video Handling / Media Player

Hi-
I'm using Lightroom 3 on Windows 7 64.  It handles and plays .mov files just fine through Quicktime.
However, I picked up a new waterproof camera that saves video in .mp4 format.  Here, LR shows a distorted thumbnail for all videos (just the first few lines, then a small green spot, then grey).  If you try to play them, Media Player will crash immediately and not work again until Windows is restarted.
However, Media Player plays the mp4 videos just fine in Explorer.
I don't want to associate mp4 video with Quicktime, because it is terrible at playing larger files.
Anyone see this before?
M

Update - converting the files to .avi files works in media player when launched in LR3.  So the problem apparently is specifically mp4 format.
Not a solution, though, because .avi files are way too big..

    Hi Travis,
According to Microsloth it can play WMV9 codec material
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/codecs/video.aspx
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/codecs/audio.aspx
As can Flip4Mac and older QuickTimes

But no mention of 10 and I don't have anything here in that format to test it out.

    Hi,
I may be able to offer something back.
After downloading Mussorsky I think you will be very happy as it will enable you to media index.
I have the Nokia Comes With Music 2 year unlimited and this kicked off my 5k song plus digital music collection and then buying my N900 for storeage. Then I found N900 / Nokia won't allow DRM files on it, oh dear! This caused me to look elsewhere for music and fill up my N900 in conjunction with using Ovi Music with my X6 CWM and Ovi Music.
In the main approx 95% the albums index fine, and I will use Ovi Music to assist between my computer and N900 for non DRM files.
Also, with CD's as you mention, I can't remember why I but I ended up using Nero and then similarly using Ovi Music between my computer and N900.
Mussorsky was the icing on the cake to brush up the odd 5% of indexing.
This has been after hours trial and error but I've got there.
Hope this may be of assistance.

  • Transfer videos from windows media player to iTunes

Want to transfer personal videos from media player into iTunes

The only way iTunes could play the content of a commercial video DVD would be to use a third-party tool to break the copy protection and convert the content to a format iTunes can handle, and that's not something we can do here since breaking the copy protection is illegal in the US.

  • Captivate 6.0.1 published MP4 play with windows media player

    Hi
    Pls help.
I publish my Software Simulation to MP4 without any error.  Then I play this MP4 with Windows Media Player. I could only hear the audio but the video is all black.  The review works well.  Does anyone have any idea?
    Thank you!
    Rgds, YYY

Try viewing your MP4 in a different player to see if it works there.  For example, the Adobe Media Player is a free application that you can insatll and use.  It's more likely to be compatible with Adobe-created video than Windows Media Player.
Your Windows Media Player may need updated codecs to decode and display the Captivate MP4 video.

  • Encoding iMovie files for Windows Media Player

    iMovie 11 / 9.0
    Mac OS 10.6.8
I edit audio/video in iMovie (currently the only program I have) and need to output for streaming on the internet. Most of our subscribers are using older versions of Windows Media Player and as I understand won't be able to play MP4. I couldn't play the MP4 using Windows Media Player 9.0, "invalid format" error.
What software could I use to convert MP4 to a format for streaming on the internet that our subscribers play using WMP? Should I save the file out of iMovie in a different format to convert?
I have Adobe Media Encoder 4.2.0.006 but my options are h.264 or flash, got error messages when I tried to "Edit Export Settings".
    Thanks

The easiest way is to upload video to YouTube and embed videos on your site from there. This way you don't have to worry about which version of Windows, which version of Internet Exlorere, etc.
Another way, ask your users to install QuickTime For Windows. Then export normally,
Another way, get one of the paid versions of Flip4Mac, and you can convert files to wmv using QuickTime Pro or MPEG Streamclip or Compressor.

  • .mp4 video's audio won't play on Firefox, even with Microsoft Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin 1.0.0.8

Title says it all: trying to play any .mp4 video files, or anything that utilizes .mp4 files period, will have the video play just fine, but with absolutely no audio at all. I run a Windows 7 Home Premium, and have tested several sites that utilize .mp4 video files, and have tested it on Internet Explorer, with Explorer showing better results at playing both the audio and video.
I have checked to see if media.windows-media-foundation.enabled is true in the about:config menu, and restarted Firefox, but to no avail. Any ideas as to what could be the root of this problem?

    Hi Soundless_Cyborg,
Can you please specify an example url where this is happening, sometimes the video player does not support the codec.
Maybe you need to set it as default for this file type:
Open Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Set your default programs > Select Windows Media Player from the lists under Programs > Set this program as default > OK

  • Windows 7 freezes / hangs when playing video or audio on any media player

I've had this issue since installing Windows 7 (32 bit) over 2 months ago and have been actively seeking a fix for the majority of those two months. In windows XP pro (32 bit), I had no issues whatsoever. The problem manifests itself as a complete hang of all system functions and inability to interact with my computer aside from moving the pointer around.
This only occurs when I am playing some sort of media (mp3, avi, mp4, mkv, etc) on any media player that I had installed at the current time of testing (WMP12, VLC, Realplayer). The initial response is a hang of the system which then can become a freeze if I click around too much during the hang. After approximately 3-5 minutes the problem is alleviated and the system plays catchup with the video/audio sync.
Below is a complete rundown on my system and fixes floating from other threads that I have attempted.
    My System Spec:
Windows: Windows 7 Ultimate (32 Bit) Version 6.1 Build 7600
    Motherboard: Gigabyte Ds4-X48 Crossfire Ready
    GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256Bit DDR5
    CPU: E8500 Wolfdale (3.16) Core2Duo
    Ram: 4GB ( 2x 2GB OCZ Reapers @ PC8500 1066MHZ )
    PSU: 600W OCZ GameXStream
    HDD - Primary - 1.5TB Seagate
    HDD - STORAGE - 1.5TB Seagate + 500GB Western Digital
    Audio - Integrated Realtek
Drive Bays: SATA Combo Drive (Samsung) + IDE Lightscribe DVD-MultiRecorder RW
As you can see, my system is more than capable of running Windows 7 and probably just as qualified to captain a space shuttle.
Things I have tried to no avail
    - Changing the Power Plan
    - Adjusting the overclock of my GPU to factory defaults
    - disabling Media Player Network Sharing in services.msc
    - Only having WMP12 installed
    - Shark007 Codec Pack
    -Not having Shark007 Codec Pack
    - Undergrading WMP12 to WMP11
    - CLEAN BOOT - Freezes/hangs still occured regardless.
    - Registry optimization and cleaning
    - Playing video after fresh install still causes freezes
    - SQMClient/MachineThrottling IS NOT THERE TO BE DISABLED OR DELETED
    - Adjusting RAM timing, frequency and voltage in BIOS
    - Use Display driver provided by Windows Update for ATI Radeon HD 4870
    - Tested several other Catalyst and Display drivers
    - Updated Chipset , Audio Driver, Network Driver
    - Clean installed 4+ times ( I clean installed inbetween all of the previous attempts listed above)
    - Uninstalling programs such as AIM, MSN Messenger, Adobe products, Daemon Tools Lite, Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX
-My computer is not eligible for the Intel Matrix Storage update
    -Disabling aero
I am now starting to suspect maybe Company of Heroes may be an issue as it is Divx endorsed.
I froze once while typing this up due to wmp12 playing a mp4 music video in the background.
Can anyone recommend a good skin and theme that will make Windows XP look like 7? I'm starting to think that it's my only solution.

    Hi,
    Thank you for your posting.
As for this system freezing issue, we generally need to analyze the performance monitor logs and memory dump files to locate the root cause. Unfortunately, debugging is beyond what we can do in the forum because of the nature of forum support. A support call to our product service team is needed for the debugging service. I'd like to recommend that you contact Microsoft Customer Support Service (CSS) for assistance so that this problem can be resolved efficiently. To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a look at the web site listed below:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;PHONENUMBERS
If you are outside the US please see http://support.microsoft.com for regional support phone numbers.
Having said that, I'd still like to provide the following general troubleshooting steps to see if we can eliminate this problem:
Note: Please perform a complete system backup first. If any unexpected issue occurs, we can quickly restore the system to the current status.
    1.    Scan your system to make sure that the system is virus free. Temporarily disable your anti-virus software to see if this problem is gone.
    2.    If you have recently installed any software, hardware or drivers, please remove them.
    3.    Run Process Explorer to check which processes are using a lot of memories or cause high CPU utilization:
    Process Explorer
    4.    If the process is a service, you can use these steps to find out what applications are using most of the CPU: Open Task Manager, click on the Processes tab, look for the process that is using the CPU and note its PID (Process ID). Note that you may need to go to the View/Select Columns menu and make sure that PID (Process Identifier) is checked.
Once you have the PID run the following from a command prompt:
    tasklist /svc
This should give you the application associated with the PID you identified in the previous step.
However, if the issue still persists, please contact Microsoft Customer Support Service (CSS) for further troubleshooting. I hope the problem will be resolved soon. Thanks!

  • I just purchased Premiere 13 and the video files won't play in Windows Media Player. I have audio but no video. What can I do? I have Premiere 12 and everything works fine with it.

    What can I do?

    Bonan
Premiere Elements 13 on Windows 8.1 64 bit
What are your export settings for this finished video from Premiere Elements 13?
For example - are you using
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    AVChD
    with Presets = MP4 H.264 1920 x 1080p30
    or something different like
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    MPEG
    with Presets = MPEG2 1920 x 1080i30
    or something different ....
We are going to have to get at your export settings which gets us to the properties of the finished video that you are trying to play in Windows Media Player.
If you take your finished video from Premiere Elements 13 and import that into a new Premiere Elements 13 project with Add Media/Files and Folders,
does it import into the new project. And, when the video is in the new project, does it display video and have audio in the Edit area monitor?
We need more details of the properties of the finished video. Knowing that you have no problems with this matter in Premiere Elements 12 and that
the finished video plays in CyberLink are important, but they do not help to figure out what is happening in 13 so that it does not happen again.

  • Windows Media Player 12, Windows 7 does not play AVCHD (.mts) video in embedded mode, but does in normal mode

I've run into a problem with WMP 12 on Windows 7 involved in playback of AVCHD files.  When run in 'normal' mode from Windows Explorer, WMP opens the video file and plays it back beautifully.  However, I'm building an application with
WMP embedded.  When running WMP from within the application (c#), the same AVCHD plays audio but no video.
I've seen this type of problem before with respect to audio playback of mp4 files in WMP from embedded-mode:  the MP4 license prohibited audio playback when run from embedded mode but played the audio fine when WMP was launched from explorer.
I was able to solve this particular problem by using a 3rd party codec pack.
In this case, I've tried a number of packs K-Lite, etc., but to no avail.  My problem persists.  I suspect perhaps I've encountered a similar licensing-type issue with a SONY CODEC and the state in which WMP is playing back files but I
have not yet been able to track it down.
    Any ideas?

    Hello,
It seems that you are using the Windows Media Player control in a window form forum,
as far as I know, the Windows Media Player control does not raise an exception when it encounters an error such as an invalid URL. Instead, it signals an event. Please try to set an event to try to catch the expcetion as described in the link below:

  • CS4 using a Mac and want to play video using windows media player

Hi I am having issues with file types to play video back using Windows media player.
I am producing video using Premiere CS4 on a Mac and I need to know what format to use to have the files play in windows media player as .mp4 is not compatable with wm player.
    Thanks

I have Windows Media Player installed on my PC workstation and I do remember installing a codec so that MP4 files could play in WMPlayer 11 on Windows Vista 64-bit (should work on 32-bit also)
look near the bottom section of this link for further information.  The codec is called DirectShow
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316992#34
Otherwise if you're posting videos on a webpage for example in the mp4 format use the Quicktime html wrapper so that people using Mac's can also view your videos that are encoded for PC's.  If you encode in wmv format (Windows Media Video) then provide a link to the "Flip4Mac" application that can use Quicktime on the Mac to play Windows Media Files.  I think you can find it on www.mactopia.com .

  • I definitely have put this under the wrong catergory but i don't care, I was wondering why everytime i click on a video to play it says: Windows media player has stopped working

Ok, so I made a video with Bandicam, and every time I click on it to play it (it is saved as an MP4), it just says: Windows Media Player has stopped working. Then it gives me two choices: Close the program OR look online for a solution. I REALLY want to
post these videos, but I can't. If anyone could help that would be great!

    Hi juderocks14,
Please first take a check with the other Players and see if they could play the MP4 file normally. If it can't be played, which means it might be corrupted. You may ask at the Bandicam side, or save the files again.
If issue insists, take a try with the Troubleshooter (For Windows 7, 8 and 8.1):
Open the Windows Media Player Settings troubleshooter
Fix Windows Media Player video, and other media or library issues
Or you may try to turn Windows Features on or off to reset Windows  Media Player:
Turn Windows features on or off (Before turn it on again, please remember to reboot first)

What happens if I turn off Windows Media Player?

  • Playing video in Windows Media Player

Ok I know, I'm the dreaded Windows user in the Apple forum. But I have good questions and as soon as I can afford it I'm getting an Apple laptop.
Why can't I play the videos I downloaded in Windows Media Player 10? I'm pretty sure it's because I don't have a codec to play a .m4v file but where can I get one? Any help?
    Thanks all

    Bravo!
EDIT: I miread your post. I'll renanswer differently this time.
Why can't I play the videos I downloaded in Windows Media Player 10? I'm pretty sure it's because I don't have a codec to play a .m4v file but where can I get one? Any help?
Because Windows media is competing technology. Since there's no real video "standard", different manufacturers use their own proprietary formats whenever they can.
Depending on the video files you have, you might be able to convert them into some format that can be played on the iPod or in iTunes.
Since I'm not a Windows user, I am not familiar with the format of videos downloaded using WMP.
Try to look for a converter that will put your videos into one of the following formats:
H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
If you can get your video into one of the above two formats, it will work just fine on the iPod.
Many conversion utilities have been mentioned in these forums. I believe Videora iPod Converter is popular amongst Windows users. I can't recommend it, since I have no experience with it. I just see it mentioned a lot. Seems users have had mixed results using it.
