MP4 Video Playback in PSE8 & Windows 7 Without Quicktime

I have several MP4 videos that play fine natively in Windows 7 with Windows Media Player (no codecs have to be installed/downloaded).  However, PSE8 tells me I have to install Quicktime to play these files and generate thumbnails.  Is there any way to tell PSE8 to use Windows Media Player or the built-in codecs for this?

Yeah, hard to believe, but Adobe technical support has gotten even worse in the last six months.  It got so bad after they outsourced/offshored it that an Adobe VP published an open letter to customers in August that was published across the Adobe site.   It's no longer available at Adobe.com, but you can read it here:
http://www.macworld.co.uk/blogs/index.cfm?entryid=806&blogid=12
I've seen no evidence that things have gotten better, and some evidence that it's gotten worse.   The support for PSE prefaces each reply with "sorry for the delay, we're overwhelmed", and they acquired a bad habit of arbitrarily marking cases as withdrawn (something only the customer should do), preventing customers from replying and preventing an email notification from being sent to the customers.

    As with transferring any other video that is in an iPad compatible format - via the iTunes sync/transfer process.

  • Video playback slowdown (on window focus shift)

    Hi,
    I have a Mac Mini 1.42GHz 512mb RAM 80GB machine that I've been using for light OS X 10.4.7 usage. I've noticed that when a Safari window playing a video (Quicktime plugin or Adobe Flash 9.0) loses focus, that means when I change to another window, the video playback becomes very choppy to the point of being unable to watch it. I've noticed this tendency in DVD Player as well. I was wondering if someone could tell how I could turn off this. It's a real bugger because I multitask quite a bit and would like to hear videos play smoothly (the audio chops too) while it is out of focus.
    I'm a Windows user by default so I really don't know if this is proscribed behavior for OS X to facilitate higher process responsiveness while in focus. I've done a couple of searches regarding the issue and haven't found anything. Hope I'm not treading well worn paths
    Bonus question:
    I've noticed DVD Player playback quality is atrocious with any dvds I've played on it, I haven't seen any major complaints regarding the Mini's playback quality so I was wondering if someone had any pointers? The quality level is about that of any regular mpeg2 video without any postprocessing attached, it looks very crude. I've had this 'issue' since Panther. Is this a problem related to ATI's 32mb graphics core or...?
    Thanks in advance.
    Mac Mini 1.42GHz PPC (512mb, 80GB, 10.4.7)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    The video slowdown in the Flash player is a built in "feature" (I actually think it is a feature, but your milage may vary!) of Safari.
    I actually recently read something about this, but I'm not sure I'll get it all exactly correct. And of course I can't remember where I saw it. But the long-short of it seems to be that Flash doesn't have its own clock. It relies on the hosting platform to feed it its time cues. Different browser manage this differently, but Safari is evidently designed to drop Flash (and probably other things) to about 4 frames per second when the window doesn't have focus.
    There seemed to be a similar limitation within Firefox as well. The discussion I read was asking some Flash plug-in developer if they could bypass these controls. The developer pointed out that (especially in the Firefox case) that was a community decision as a way to limit folks from having the dreaded "Death of Five thousand little Flash banners."
    So even with a more powerful computer I don't think you will be able to get around this issue. Maybe I'm wrong.
    As for the DVDs issue all I can say is that with a Mini you probably won't be able to watch DVDs and do other stuff.

  • Video playback in separate window

    I used to have Video playback in iTunes to play in a seperate window. the 10.4 update seems to have reset this to play in main iTunes window.
    I can't see the option/proference for altering it back.
    Has this feature been removed from iTunes?

    Thanks Jim - yes, that's sorted it.
    View options does seem a logical place, but altering what was a previous preference is a bit odd.
    Thanks for your help

  • My video playback, in separate window, has no volume or jog functionality

    I can not use the progress jog bar, as well as the volume bar, when viewing videos in a separate window via iTunes. If i click on either of them it will simply pause the video and not slide.
    To adjust the volume or skip forward or back I have to open the iTunes main window and do it form there. I can use the keyboard shortcuts but I prefer to use the separate window to control playback and volume.
    Running current version of iTunes (64bit) on Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit) which was freshly installed this past week. Was also having this issue with the RC and RTM version of Windows 7 I was running prior. Seems to have broke with a recent software update to iTunes as I did not have this issue before. I have dealt with this issues for some weeks now and just see no reason to it to keep happening.
    Any help?

    Never mind. It's because I had audio and video going through HDMI through the Thunderbolt port. As soon as I shut off my Amp, the separate windows appeared again. Very strange.

  • I may have a solution for choppy video playback for iTunes Windows users

    My setup:
    - Intel NUC (i5)
    - 8gb memory
    - Intel 5000 Graphics with 1GB memory (share of system memeory)
    - iTunes 12
    - iTunes library on NAS via GigaLan
    Had problems with very choppy and freezing HD video playback in iTunes and tried everything... Every other player works fine.
    1. downgrade audio playback
    2. played with Quicktime settings
    However, I think I might have a workaround. You need to do the following,
    1. Install Quicktime 7
    2. Install iTunes
    3. Download ffdshow (Sep 2014 version) and install the codecs: pretty much leaving all do default
    4. Set audio quality in Sound and Quicktime options in control panel, and iTunes to 16bit 48k
    5. In advanced options of Quicktime in control panel, deselect "Direct 3D" & "Enable directdraw on seondary display", ONLY tick "enable directdraw accerleration"
    Well, at least this works for me for now.
    HOWEVER!!!
    @Apple! You need to address this issue once for all, I can't believe there is no solution. As a paying customer who buy quite a few of your movies in iTunes, I expect to have a harssell free experience. Consumers should NOT have to go through all these troubles trying to fix a product you have released and making billions out of.
    Reason why I switched from Android to Apple for my phones and tablets is becasue of the seamless user experience, regretfully I have to admit, this advantage is quickly going away. The amount of glitches in your recent ios updates and itunes are simply unacceptable.

    Downloading videos on 7.0.2 hasn't worked as well as everyone had hoped. I still can't get mine to work, but i do know a few people who haven't had trouble with the newer itunes.

  • Audio and video playback latency ,since windows 10 help please

    hi everyone I'm having a problem with my laptop ,video playback is lagging and sound to , sometimes making robotic sounds, and it all started when I upgraded to windows 10.my laptop: Lenovo ThinkPad x220 intel core i7 2.7 GHz processor 8 GB of ram previously had windows 7 pro now windows 10 proI tried resetting my computer , you know to have it clean and fresh, I thought this might help , maybe some old programs from windows 7 were causing this problem , but it didn't help , I also tried disabling and enabling the drivers from the device manager , is a trick I found on youtube , but it didn't work , I'd be very thankful if you could give me some advices .

    Can you try disabling the Ethernet adapter in Device Manager?

  • MP4 Video playback problem - any idea how to make it work?

    Mp4 video files are working when opened from local filesystem but now working when opened from the web
    Here is example:
    var video:Video = new Video();
    addChild(video);
    var nc:NetConnection = new NetConnection();
    nc.connect(null);
    var customClient:Object = new Object();
    customClient.onMetaData = ns_onMetaData;
    var ns:NetStream = new NetStream(nc);
    ns.client = customClient;
    ns.play("http://www.voyda.eu/projects/not_working2.mp4"); // here is actual a file so you can test it
    ns.play(url);
    video.attachNetStream(ns);
    Using above code will result in not playing the video file. Interesting think is that the same video file is played well when opening from local filesystem. Just download the file, change ns.play param to "not_working2.mp4"
    ns.play("not_working2.mp4");
    and see if it's working.

    My first guess would be that you're running into a security/sandboxing issue.  Can you send me your Flash Builder project file?
    Thanks,
    Chris ([email protected])

    Under Playback tab, highlight each device and click Properties button
    Go to Advanced tab and change Sample Rate to 16bit 48000hz (DVD Quality) or 96000hz (Studio Quality), OK n OK.

  • Iphone 5 video playback problems over quicktime?

    ive recently got a new laptop, pre windows 8, and downloaded quicktime pro in order to play my iphone videos right side up because windows media player will play them upside down alot of the time. something i immeadiately noticed was that all my videos from my iphone 5, when played back via quicktime, have a big judder/skip in them every 2 seconds whereis all my iphone 4 videos playback no problem. the few videos i have that are recorded right side up from my iphone 5, because of orientation of the phone during recording, play perfectly fine on windows media player so this this leads me to believe it is a quicktime issue. i have updated to the latest quicktime just a few days ago with hopes of it being corrected but no such luck. im curious if anyone else is having this same problem or knows a fix? also if anyone knows how to flip videos with quicktime so i can just watch them on windows media would be great also. i found a write up how to do it but everytime i try it, after i save it it just reverts back to its orgional orientation. thanks for any help, Jamie

    Add me to the list of people having this problem.
    I'm running Macbook on 10.5.8. Quicktime is 7.6.9, in case this has any bearing on things.
    OK......I just searched a few places and came up with this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perian
    It's called Perian, and it's one of a few different options you could use to solve this problem....I just installed it (free), and now the videos play without a hitch. It's a plug-in for Quicktime.  There are others that can supposedly do the same thing--look around and give it a shot.
    (Also, supposedly this Perian is no longer in open development, and may not work with the newest Quicktime update for the newest Macs, but, like I said, there are other options out there that may work for you instead.)
    I have a feeling my problem may have been due to my particular Quicktime/Macbook setup being a bit outdated, but who knows?
    Good luck!

  • Can Quicktime Pro convert .mkv video formats to mp4 video formats

    I purchased Quicktime Pro believing it could convert .mkv video formats to MP4 video formats, however, the resulting output file is just a 60kb file from an original 971,936 kb file.
    I registered the key as given to me in the purchase receipt email, I used Export to MRP, I selected the input .mkv file. All seemed to be OK until it ended creating the short 60kb file.
    Suggestions please.
    Mel from Oakville.

    I purchased Quicktime Pro believing it could convert .mkv video formats to MP4 video formats, however, the resulting output file is just a 60kb file from an original 971,936 kb file.
    As indicated on the Apple web site, keying the QT Player for "Pro" use merely unlocks editing and conversion features built into the app but not available without the key. It does not add any new file type or codec support beyond that for which the QT Player is already configured on your platform.
    I registered the key as given to me in the purchase receipt email, I used Export to MRP, I selected the input .mkv file. All seemed to be OK until it ended creating the short 60kb file.
    An MKV file will convert only if you have support for both the MKV file container (which is not natively QT compatible) and codecs to handle the specific codecs contained in the MKV file container if available for QT use.
    Suggestions please.
    I do not normally use MKV files on a daily basis and so, on those occasions when I do need to use them as a source for conversions to mobile devices, I use the free HandBrake application. As I see it, you can either try to add the missing support needed to use QT 7 Pro or you could download HandBrake for iTunes managed/mobile device files or use FFmpeg (on which HandBrake is based) for more general target conversions. As a non-PC user, I am assuming here that the Windows versions of both the HandBrake and FFmpeg apps have the same features as are available in the Mac versions of these apps.

  • WINDOWS VISTA ITUNES VIDEO PLAYBACK ISSUE!!!!!! AAHHHHHHH!!! HELP!!!!!!!!!!

    am using a Dell XPS GEN 5 PC with Windows Vista Premium Edition as the current OS installed. I have latested up date for Itunes and QuickTime (7.1.6) Installed. I have recently bought and downloaded 3 of the Original Star Trek Tv Shows from Itunes. When I try and play one of them, they don't work. The Screen comes up, the show starts, then stops. Sometimes the sound keeps on playing, and then stops. Sometimes it just dosent even come on. I'm guessing (as a highly advanced Windows PC User) That this ia a "video/playback issue, related to a Apple/Vista Compatibility problem. I would like help solving this problem.

    hi slideaway!

    good lord. are you getting any sort of blue screen? if so, what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)

    if you're not seeing a blue screen (or just a flash of one), we can use this technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:

  • .mp4 video, won't play in QT, Real, Windows Media, but DOES in VLC

    I have a .mp4 video which plays fine (video, audio) in VLC, but does NOT play in QuickTime, RealPlayer or Windows Media Player.
    I have the latest Flip4Mac plug-in installed, as well.
    Is there a way to convert this into a video that will play in QT Player?
    (I also tried iSquint - doesn't work there either)

    Some of those are unfamiliar to me, but presumably you have them for a reason. Given that not all mpeg4 files are playable in Quicktime for the reasons stated, try moving some of those plug-ins to the desktop to see if it helps. My own 'portfolio' is as follows:
    These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
    It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, 3.1, 3.1.2, QT 7.3, 7.4.x and 7.5 and OS 10.4.11, and should also work with 10.5.4.
    Download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 11 (which is no longer in beta) for Mac from:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15540
    Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
    You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
    The latest version of Adobe FlashPlayer can be obtained from here:
    http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
    (You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.
    Note that Adobe requires you to uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
    and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first.
    Some users have mentioned that the latest Flash Player versions (v.9.0.115.0 and 9.0.124.0) in some cases conflict with Leopard 10.5.4, and that they have needed to revert to v. 9.0.47. This can be downloaded from here:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14266&sliceId=1
    You should also ensure that you have downloaded and installed all the correct versions for your Mac of Security Updates up to and including 2008-005. (N.B. Security Updates require both a restart and a permission repair.)
    In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
    Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
    Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
    Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
    You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
    There is an additional 'fix' you could try if you are having problems with Flash and Quicktime, depending on which type of Mac you have:
    On Intel Macs, make sure that you are not running Safari in Rosetta. You can check this, and change it, in the Get Info window.
    On PPC Macs, go to the Hard Disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, and drag the file 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' to the desktop. Quit and restart Safari. If things have improved you can trash that file. If they haven't put it back, as the lack of this plug-in can cause QT content in some widgets to cease functioning.
    And now there is an additional kid on the block: SilverLight. Microsoft has created their own version of what a replacement for Flash should be. You can read more about it here:
    http://silverlight.net/
    So, if you go to any sites that have been designed for this new Silverlight stuff, you can download the plug-in from here (but make certain that you are downloading SilverLight v.1.0 for OS X (10.4.8 upwards) if you are using a PPC Mac. Version 2 only works with Intel Macs:
    http://silverlight.net/GetStarted/
    Recommendation: Close all applications before installing any of the above, repair permissions, reboot, and repair permissions again.

  • Issues with video/audio playback and Source window

    I have some video that I am trying to import to get into my sequence. Anytime I open the video into my source window (or drag it to the timeline), the audio goes crazy. It starts skipping around and jumbling itself. When I open the video file in Quicktime on my computer, it opens and plays fine. Also, I don't know if it is unrelated, but sometimes when I open a video in my Source window, there is no audio. I can drag it to the Sequence and double click on it to bring the Sequence video into the Source window and it plays fine.
    The video that I am having issues with is a .mov filmed from an iPad (not sure which iPad model). It is filmed in Portrait mode, not sure if that matters. Please let me know what other information might be needed to troubleshoot this issue.
    Thanks!

    Ooh. Sorry about that.
    - I am using Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 v.6.0.3
    - I'm sure I have the latest update. I'm using Creative Cloud, and the Adobe Application Update Manager says everything is up to date.
    - Operating System is Windows 7 Professional (Service Pack 1)
    - Source footage is a .mov filmed in portrait mode (I didn't record it.. Haha) on an iPad, not sure the model.
    - I am getting no error messages.
    - I was just dragging the video file from the Media Browser to the Source window. Nothing special.
    - This is working on all of the other clips filmed from the same iPad at same resolution, etc. Also, this particular video plays perfectly in Quicktime. It's just when I try to play it in Premiere Pro.
    - Other software that is currently running is standard stuff: antivirus, Outlook, Gtalk, Dropbox. Nothing that uses audio.
    - I have installed K-Lite Codec pack when I got the computer.
    - I have a Dell Preision T7600, Dual Xeon Quad-core processors (2.00GHz), 16 GBs of ram, Nvidia Quadro 4000 (2GB), and running off of a 256GB SSD.
    - I am using the Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration.
    - The issue is happening on playback, both in the Source window and the Program window when I drag the video to the Sequence. It plays fine in Quicktime.
