.mp4 vs .mov - which better for encoding?

I'm new at all this, and have a question about bringing video clips into the computer from the video camera.
Using a Canon HF20 (1080i, 1920x1280), it appears I have (at least) two options. I'd like to know if I'm understanding these options correctly, and if either has advantages over the other:
1. Use the Elgato Turbo.264 HD to encode clips onto my hard drive as HD 1080p mp4 files, then use something like MPEG Streamclip to convert to QT with AIC compression, then import into FCE for editing.
2. Use FCE log and transfer directly from the Canon, which creates AIC compressed .mov files, which I believe are 1080i(???).
My eventual output goals are both web/iPhone exports, and exports to DVD for TV viewing.
Thanks! Diane

sorry to jump in in the middle of this thread, but I have a question (Tom) about your answer. are you recommending that he changes the sequence field dominance in item properties to none because of interlacing? the sequences in my fce projects seem to have "upper (odd)" as the field dominance, but everything is grey-ed out and i don't know how i can change them.
my problem is interlacing, but that's another thread i'll have to start...

  • Quicktime Pro won't save mp4 as mov

I've got several .mp4 files (created by myself with Sony Vegas using h.264 codec) that I'm trying to convert to faststart .mov files for Internet playback. I just picked up QT Pro and as I understand it I should be able to open the file and simply Save As a mov file to get a new non-rerendered h.264 encoded .mov). When I attempt save as, new files never get created. My save window goes away. When I close QT it asks me to save my changes again, still without saving the file.
I also attempted to export from QT Pro using same h.264 (same codec as mp4 was created with). The file that is created is large (obviously re-encoded, something I DON'T want) and I don't see video, just hear audio.
The original files play fine in QT 7.
    Any thoughts?

Does the vegas create proper .mp4 files or are these
in an .AVI wrapper? Just trying to determine why a
    simple "Save As..." wouldn't work.
The file is a regular .mp4 file created using Sony Vegas. The file plays fine in QT 7 players. I put some screen shots of my test mp4 with movie info and the encoding options for export. As you can see, I don't get a "passthru" option, so I don't get to far with the work around.
Here are the two screen shots:
    http://jewellhome.net/MovieSettings.jpg
    http://jewellhome.net/ExportSettings.jpg
Another thing you can try is to do an export BUT set
the compression settings for the audio and the video
to "Passthru". This will just take what you've got
and wrap it in QuickTime's .mp4 format, then a "Save
As..." to a movie should work.
The other thing I've noticed, I don't see anything in the preview window when I try to select different settings for the export. As I mentioned earlier, exported files end up with a white screen in place of video (and a large file size, go figure).
    Any other thoughts?

  • How to save a Windows 7 PSE video project to a .MP4 or .MOV file format?

I've created a pan & zoom video slide show with PSE 8 and saved it to a WMF file for use by my church.  However, they recently switched over to using a MAC for presentations.   Does PSE 13 allow you to save video projects as MP4 or MOV files suitable for Apple platforms?  I know about free malware like Format Factory.  I uses that once and learned my lesson.  I'm hoping that the PSE 13 is friendlier to Apple formats.  Yea or nay?

  • Why cant I encode a .mov using Adobe Media Encoder CC to .mp4 or .ogv to use in Edge?

Why cant I encode a .mov using Adobe Media Encoder CC to .mp4 or .ogv to use in Edge?

Yeah, mp4 in HTML5 browsers is h.264 encoded - h.264 is a subset of MPEG-4 standard. More info here:
H.264/MPEG-4 AVC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For ease of use in AME, if you look at the right side of the UI in the presets, the Web Video > YouTube presets are the ones that will encode to h.264 with the mp4 extension.

  • Can some explain 1080i and 1080p which is better for a pal project in HD

I am new with these type of codec, plus which one is better for a pal projects not NTSC. Also I want to know if there would be any problems when I take a project that is done in Pal and move it to NTSC would there be some frame problems.
    thanks

I like the p footage better because it looks more like film, plays better on the computer, and looks better in web streams... as far as going to NTSC in the end, Compressor's "advanced format conversions" or Graeme Nattress' Standards converter does a fine job of PAL to NTSC... Edit in the native format you've shot though, then in the end do the standards conversion. You needn't worry about anything special here...

  • Which Os x is better for a MacBook 1.1?

    Hi.
Which Os x is better for a MacBook White 1.1.For Networking, movies and music.
    10.5.8 or 10.6.8 ?
spec: 1.83 Ghz Intel Core Duo
             1 Gb ddr2
    Thanks

You need to install 10.6.8 because 10.5.8 is no longer receiving security updates and increasingly applications are not compatible with it. However, I recommend increasing your RAM from 1 GB to at least 2 GB, 4 if your system will support.

  • Quicktime Pro VS Sorenson Squeeze which is better for uploading to YouTube?

I'm thinking of buying Quicktime Pro or Sorenson Squeeze - which is better for uploading to YouTube? Which would give my video better quality?
Also, with regard to Sorenson Squeeze: The website says these are its requirements - could someone explain what each of them means in logical terms?
    Mac OS X system requires:
Power PC with G5 processor or greater or Intel processor - (I'll be using this program with a MacBook Pro - will this work?)
Mac OS X 10.4 or later - (Again, will this work with a MacBook Pro?)
    512 MB of RAM
    QuickTime 7.2 or later
DirectX 9.0b or later (What is this and how will I get it? Is it free?)
    * Mac users must have the Flip4Mac plugin from Telestream (Is this plugin free?) ** Windows only feature * Plugin sold separately
Please be as specific as possible.
Thank you so much in advance for answering my questions! It is really helpful!

    First.
You have no control over the conversion to Flash video (done during the YouTube upload) if you use QuickTime .mov format.
    Second.
YouTube does allow H.264 Video for its "high quality" display so you would want a QuickTime .mov container.
Now you are even more confused than when you started.
Flip4Mac allows export from QuickTime (and apps like iMovie that use it) to Windows Media Player (.wmv) formats. They will also be converted to Flash Video by YouTube so you gain nothing by using it.
You don't need Squeeze, QuickTime Pro or the Flip4Mac upgrades. Just use iMovie 7 (part of iLife '08).

  • Converting .mp4 to .mov for iDVD

Here's my problem...I am trying to make a DVD with different music videos on iDVD. Each chapter button would be the actual video (meaning when you touch the chapter video, you will get to watch the corresponding music video). Everything looked good and worked in iDVD, until I tried to burn the project. It kept giving me failure with the video. I am assuming that error is because some of the files are .mp4 and .m4v. Is that correct? I tried a DVD with only .mov files and it actually allowed me to burn the project. That brings me to the next question. I have now started to convert all of the other videos from .mp4 to .mov using QuickTime Pro. Most have converted just fine, but others convert very fast, then when the file is complete, it doesn't work correctly. It opens as a blank white screen. The audio is fine, but no video. Is there something I am doing wrong? What can I do to convert these .mp4 files to .mov?

If all you want is a movie in a MOV container, and they play in Quicktime already, then open the MP4, etc., file and do "Save As" and the same or any file name you want. It then saves in a MOV container in a matter of seconds. Since it does no compressing or transcoding of the video.
When it "gives you failure with the video" rather than say that what does the error message actually say, or is there one?
I don't use iDVD much but it should work with videos that Quicktime plays except MPEG-2 (and maybe even MPEG-2, no idea).
Have you tried to make a disk image only first? Vs. burning right to DVD? That is often a far better choice as if you get a successful image you can actually mount and play it like a DVD and then if it works you can burn as many copies of the image to a true DVD media blank. It also separates the encoding from the burning and on some macs, especially lower powered ones that can help.
PS If you want to do many of these to be honest even though it costs money buy Toast Titanium. If you can find even Toast 8, say on eBay, (current is 10, about $100) it is all you need, and it is far more intuitive, works with more types of video, is faster and WAY simpler to use. IT is drag and drop, give it a name, name each title, pick a background and burn - same idea best to do an image then burn that.

  • Which Imac would be better for gaming?

So i've got a choice between these two models -
    £1329.60
3.1GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
TB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
    8gb Ram
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 1GB GDDR5
    Apple care
    27 inch model
    3.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    8GB (two 4GB) memory
    1TB hard drive1
NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M with 1GB video memory
    Apple care
    £1407.60
Basically, the decision is down to, do I want a slightly better graphics card and bigger screen, or a smaller screen and better processer?
I just want to gauge opinions, i'll be using it as my day to day computer as well, some video editing, but nothing too strenuous. How big is the difference in graphic and processing powers.
    Thanks for your help

With all due respect the question was "which iMac would be better for gaming?".  Key word here is 'better', not 'perfect', not 'ideal'; just 'better'. Unqualified answers and/or sweeping statements do very little to contribute to a discussion, let alone answer the question under consideration.

Why do you need a expensive MacBook Pro?
Your attending high school and unless everyone else is rich also your likely going to be a target by the more poorer students for theft or damage to the machine.
You could keep it home, but if you need it for class then your exposed again.
Also at that age your not very careful yet, a MacBook Pro is a expensive and easily damaged machine.
Unless your made of money and so are others at your school, I would recommned a low profile, just does the job cheap Windows PC.
If it dies, gets lost, stolen or damaged because of your inexperince handling senstivie electronics then it's no big deal.
You can buy a Mac later on when your sure you have a need for it, currently there isn't much advantage of owning a Mac compared to a PC, they do just about the same things now, one just looks prettier than the other.
Since 95% of the world uses Windows PC's your going to have to install Windows on the Mac in order to keep your skills up there or be unemployed, so it's a extra headache and expense.
    good luck

all pretty identical tho I would go with cs, just because I
    like the GUI much
    more than other versions...

  • Which is better for bulk message scenario in sap xi RFC or Proxy

which is better for bulk message scenario in ( RFC or Proxy ) ?
Edited by: prabhatxi on Aug 6, 2010 4:44 PM

Proxy will alwaays be better option in this case, as it is adapter less framework, and communication happens directly with XI central integration engine. So it is always fast communication and gives good performance.
But still you should consider other factors, you may consider using RFC as well, as sometime we go for RFC/IDOC as this are the standard interfaces already available rather than creating structure...
May be you can share more info on what type/volume data are you planning to send via XI?
    Hope this cleart your doubt..

For some reason that link I gave you isn't working right now, but it was today, weird. I would get Tomcat simple because sun uses it in its examples and recommends it. Here's sun's link then, it's probably more useful anyway. http://java.sun.com/products/jsp/

  • Which is better for music production: macbook air or pro?

Which is better for music production: macbook air or pro?

The MacBook Pro has higher specifications, depending
on the model, and then CTO additional upgrades.
The Air does not have a Retina display, but has lesser
specs, so that may make a difference. They still offer a
    low-end MB/Pro w/ optical drive, w/o Retina; specs vary;
it may work in your instance. You'd have 14 days to take
a new Apple computer back, so keep that in mind.
    Good luck!
