MP4 vs MOV

I bought a Flip video camera and used the included FlipShare software for the first week. It did a fine job of editing video clips. Then I got iMovie. The first thing I noticed is that where FlipShare would take about 3 minutes to download 800MB of clips, iMovie took about 25 minutes.
I could see that iMovie was converting the MP4 files from the camera to MOV. The MOV files and more than 3.5 times bigger than the MP4 files.
What is the point of this?

There is no best. You decide based on your viewers' expectaitons or the site admin's specifications.

Great hearing for you all! I thought I was all alone this past weekend. I did learn a lot this weekend. I really like the InDesign product.(half-the-battle) But to be helped by the prestigious “Sandee Cohen” was an honor indeed.”  I ordered the InDesign CC today.  Peter, I appreciate all the feedback on Lynda too. They are loaded with lots of good videos. Derek too honed in on one of the most important aspects!  Since I have been working with Word for most of the first portion of the book this will be a big help. I looked at the comments big help ! Thanks a ton ALL!  Have a wonder day or evening whenever you read this reply.

  • TS1382 my ipod will not play any format of film i have tried mp4 and .mov and it says this format not supported what is the problem

i have an ipod classic and i have tried to put films on but every format i try it keeps saying thei format not supported i have tried mp4 and .mov and it will not take it anyone got any suggestions on what format to use and the best way to convert films

If these problem videos are already stored in your iTunes library, try using the iTunes built in convert to convert the file to an even friendlier iPod format.  To use it, highlight the video in iTunes and choose Advanced -> Create iPod or iPhone version from the drop down menu.  When the conversion process has completed, try syncing the new version over to your iPod Classic.

  • .mp4 and .mov files are just LARGE

Sorry, without posting all the encoding details, is there an obvious reason why my .mp4 and .mov files are ~10x the size that they should be after AME? I'm talking about files that are 30mb .mp4's before and 300mb.mov afterwards. If you need details I'll post. Thanks.

File size is determined primarily by only two factors - duration and bitrate.  The codec used, resolution, frame rate, etc. all have little or no effect on file size.
Duration, and bitrate.  If you want a smaller file, one or the other of those has to be reduced.

  • ATV doesn't work with mp4 and mov files

Apple TV doesn't play the mp4 or mov files that are in my iTunes Library.
    ATV plays only m4v video.
    How can I do?
    Thanks,
    Lud

Thanks Rudegar and Churchill for your answer and sorry if I answer so late.
I didn't create such files... I only downloded them from internet...
I have tried to convert them with "Any video converter" bought on App Store. If I tried to convert the files in a ATV format the software creates a m4v file, but offen the audio is out of sync...

  • ITunes won't play audio with mp4 or mov video

I have wasted many frustrating hours now trying to get iTunes to play mp4 and mov videos but can't get any sound. A few months back it was working fine. Tried ALL the suggested fixes like uninstalling, updating and checking all the MIME/File boxes. When I went back to QT 7.5 and played the files independently of iTunes everything was fine. Quicktime  7.6, 7.67 & 7.7.1 do not play the audio independently or under iTunes and of course iTunes won't play video with QT less than 7.7.1. The same mp4 videos uploaded to my iPOD work fine. I currently have iTunes 10.5.3.3 installed on a Windows XP SP3 on an e-machines pc. Ideas please!!

I got this problem as well. Seems as soon as I moved to version 7.6 it stopped playing my video audio. My music plays fine, but my video audio is non-existant. It's not the file itself because I can play off my iPod (though not off my iPod through iTunes) just fine. I've done all the suggestions above and NOTHING has worked. Is there anything else we can find???

  • Quicktime Pro won't save mp4 as mov

I've got several .mp4 files (created by myself with Sony Vegas using h.264 codec) that I'm trying to convert to faststart .mov files for Internet playback. I just picked up QT Pro and as I understand it I should be able to open the file and simply Save As a mov file to get a new non-rerendered h.264 encoded .mov). When I attempt save as, new files never get created. My save window goes away. When I close QT it asks me to save my changes again, still without saving the file.
I also attempted to export from QT Pro using same h.264 (same codec as mp4 was created with). The file that is created is large (obviously re-encoded, something I DON'T want) and I don't see video, just hear audio.
The original files play fine in QT 7.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks, Kurtmo

Does the vegas create proper .mp4 files or are these
in an .AVI wrapper? Just trying to determine why a
    simple "Save As..." wouldn't work.
The file is a regular .mp4 file created using Sony Vegas. The file plays fine in QT 7 players. I put some screen shots of my test mp4 with movie info and the encoding options for export. As you can see, I don't get a "passthru" option, so I don't get to far with the work around.
Here are the two screen shots:
    http://jewellhome.net/MovieSettings.jpg
    http://jewellhome.net/ExportSettings.jpg
Another thing you can try is to do an export BUT set
the compression settings for the audio and the video
to "Passthru". This will just take what you've got
and wrap it in QuickTime's .mp4 format, then a "Save
As..." to a movie should work.
The other thing I've noticed, I don't see anything in the preview window when I try to select different settings for the export. As I mentioned earlier, exported files end up with a white screen in place of video (and a large file size, go figure).
    Any other thoughts?

  • Any way to make my .mp4 or .mov 3D animation background transparent

I created my background as transparent but when I render my .mp4 or .mov 3D animation, it is black. I tried importing it into After Effects and it I can't get it to bring in all my animations I added in photoshop? Apparently the engines are different now between photoshop cc and after effects CC. Any thoughts?
    Thank you!!

MP4/ H.264 can't have any transparency. Quicktime can have transparency with Animation and PNG CoDecs. Otherwise simply render to image sequences.

  • How to save a Windows 7 PSE video project to a .MP4 or .MOV file format?

I've created a pan & zoom video slide show with PSE 8 and saved it to a WMF file for use by my church.  However, they recently switched over to using a MAC for presentations.   Does PSE 13 allow you to save video projects as MP4 or MOV files suitable for Apple platforms?  I know about free malware like Format Factory.  I uses that once and learned my lesson.  I'm hoping that the PSE 13 is friendlier to Apple formats.  Yea or nay?

  • Converting mp4 fo mov in QT Pro

When I try to convert an .mp4 to an .mov in QTPro the converted file only has the audio portion.
    Any help?

Couldn't care less about Wondershare. I brought that up so who ever read this would know that Wondershare has no problem and converts the file from mp4 to mov the problem was why Quicktime Pro which is supposed to do the same is not converting it.
Frankly, I am still trying to figure out what the things you've already said are supposed to mean.
When I try to convert an .mp4 to an .mov in QTPro the converted file only has the audio portion.
First off, MP4 and MOV are file containers--not compression formats. If the compressed data in the source file is already QT compatible, then there is no need to "convert" anything. If you want the data in an MOV file container, you simply use the "Save As..." option to copy it from the source file container to the MOV file container. If the compressed data is not, already compatible with QT, then you would need to ensure you system is configured with the proper component to allow you to "Export" (i.e., convert) the incompatible compression format to a QT "edit" compatible compression format for editing. Unfortunately, you never mentioned whether or not the files "play" in QT 7 Pro. Some compression formats are "playback" only compatible. Others may be "playback" and "conversion" compatible but not "edit" compatible while "fully" QT compatible files play, convert, and are editable natively.
Good question, I have a video project to do in Final Cut Pro. I was given various .mp4 videos and a .m4v intro. In FCP I was going to import all the files, edit the intro and the main video together and they want the final file as an .mp4 But FCP does not play .mp4 files so I have to convert to .mov.
Since you indicate the MP4 files will not "play" in FCP, the implication is that the video compressed data is not QT compatible. Unfortunately, QT and apps based on it are very "standards" conscious and may not be compatible with proprietary files or files encoded with hybrid profile/level standards which was why QTKirk asked about codec specifics and the source of your files. (The latter of which you failed to answer and which could be key to your problem.)
Isn't AVC the same as H264?
MPEG-4/AVC is the same as H.264 but AVC alone could simply refer to a proprietary or hybrid Advance Video Coding third-party codec.
Now for argument sake I took the original.mp4 file, opened and edited down in a trial of Wondershare Video Converter. It saved the file
Was this really a "Save" action or an Export/Conversion? If a simple save, then it implies the original data was QT compatible which may indicated it is the file container that is giving you problems and may either contain improper headers (which QT checks) or is not properly terminated. On the other hand, if the action was an export/conversion action, then that would imply the source data was not QT compatible. For instance, the Wondershare Video Converter appears to support XviD MP4 which would require a third-party component for use with QT apps.
I imported that file into FCP and it plays fine. But the file extension is still.mp4 so I changed the file extension to .mov, imported that into .fcp and That plays fine as well
Why would you think this would make a difference? QT looks at both the file internals, as well as, the extension. Any supported third-party compression format can be placed in a "real" MOV file container and will play just as well in either container. Changing the file extension normally has no effect on whether or not the file will play since the QT app will check the file "internals" whether or not there is an extension. However, changing the extensions can effect both the display of the finder icon and/or which application will try to open the file which, in turn, could determine whether or not the file will open in the called app. That is why QTKirk stated "We don't change a file extension just so it can 'work' with our apps."
Couldn't care less about Wondershare. I brought that up so who ever read this would know that Wondershare has no problem and converts the file from mp4 to mov the problem was why Quicktime Pro which is supposed to do the same is not converting it.
I doubt QTKirk cares about Wondershare either. What he would likely care about is actually seeing a sample snippet of your source file in order to run independent tests on the problem.

  • Converting .mp4 to .mov for iDVD

Here's my problem...I am trying to make a DVD with different music videos on iDVD. Each chapter button would be the actual video (meaning when you touch the chapter video, you will get to watch the corresponding music video). Everything looked good and worked in iDVD, until I tried to burn the project. It kept giving me failure with the video. I am assuming that error is because some of the files are .mp4 and .m4v. Is that correct? I tried a DVD with only .mov files and it actually allowed me to burn the project. That brings me to the next question. I have now started to convert all of the other videos from .mp4 to .mov using QuickTime Pro. Most have converted just fine, but others convert very fast, then when the file is complete, it doesn't work correctly. It opens as a blank white screen. The audio is fine, but no video. Is there something I am doing wrong? What can I do to convert these .mp4 files to .mov?

If all you want is a movie in a MOV container, and they play in Quicktime already, then open the MP4, etc., file and do "Save As" and the same or any file name you want. It then saves in a MOV container in a matter of seconds. Since it does no compressing or transcoding of the video.
When it "gives you failure with the video" rather than say that what does the error message actually say, or is there one?
I don't use iDVD much but it should work with videos that Quicktime plays except MPEG-2 (and maybe even MPEG-2, no idea).
Have you tried to make a disk image only first? Vs. burning right to DVD? That is often a far better choice as if you get a successful image you can actually mount and play it like a DVD and then if it works you can burn as many copies of the image to a true DVD media blank. It also separates the encoding from the burning and on some macs, especially lower powered ones that can help.
PS If you want to do many of these to be honest even though it costs money buy Toast Titanium. If you can find even Toast 8, say on eBay, (current is 10, about $100) it is all you need, and it is far more intuitive, works with more types of video, is faster and WAY simpler to use. IT is drag and drop, give it a name, name each title, pick a background and burn - same idea best to do an image then burn that.

  • I need an app for my Mac Pro to convert MP4 to MOV  format to play in a DVD player

I need an app for my Mac Book Pro to convert MP4 to MOV  format to play in a DVD player.  Thanks

    Quicktime can do this.
Open the MP4 in Quicktime Player. From the menu bar, File >Export > select quality. The subsequent file will be saved as .mov
Alternatively, you can simply change the extension on the mp4 file to mov since the codec is the same.
*I should mention that .mov format is not DVD format (TS_VIDEO), and the DVD will not play in a DVD player, even if you successfully burn the file to it.

  • Image Capture and MP4 and MOV with iPhoto

Using Image Capture, I tried to transfer pictures and movies (MP4 and MOV) from my iPad 3 to iPhoto on my iMac. Things were looking good, images and movies were transfering fine, iPhoto had opened with all of them in a new event. I was able to play both MP4 and MOV from iPhoto. Then I quit iPhoto and Image Capture and launch iPhoto again and try to play the movies that I just imported, iPhoto says it can't find them. It seems that it can't find them if Image Capture is not running !? Although the pictures are fine. Can somebody help me ? Thanks for the help.

I needed that option off because I want to keep them only on my NAS, so PC users can still accesses them when needed. I didn't want different sources, only on that I know is "the actual source".
Now, I did import them on Images directory using Image Capture and it worked. Then I moved them to my NAS.
But I just realized that the iPad appears in iPhoto and that I can import them into iPhoto directly ! It works fine, meaning that if I disconnect the iPad from the iMac, the movies play just fine. The initial setup was to launch Image Capture when the iPad is connected to the iMac. I disabled it. I plan to use the import from iPhoto instead.
But I still need to keep those pictures and movies on the NAS as well. It means that I will need to export them on the NAS eachtime.
Thanks for your help, it really helped.

  • Converting flash to mp4 (or mov)

does anyone know of a FREE program that can convert flash files to mp4 (or .mov)?
    thank you if you do!

Most serious mac users would have this excellent and free program - MPEG Streamclip.
You can get it here also from the downloads section of this Apple site:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
Download the beta version 1.9.3b2 and you will be able to directly download YouTube videos (File > Open URL).
Otherwise just drag your file into the MPEG window then click on File > Export to QuickTime.
From the first choice (compression) choose Apple Intermediate Codec.
Leave all else alone until you get a handle on it.
Choose a destination for your video then you will be able to import it into iMovie: File > Import > Movies...
    Z.

  • Issues with .MP4 and .MOV

I am doing an inventory of my photos and movies.  Movies have been taken on a variety of cameras.  I found an entire group that are not able to be viewed both .MOV amd .MP4s.  Quicktime opens up, it will show a length of the video of up to over 5 minutes in certain cases.  It plays through the entire clip, however the the image is entirely black and there is no sound.  Has anyone ever seen this and is this something that could be fixed?
    Thanks
