MP4 won't display on apple TV - Sound is working but no pictures

I have converted some DVD's using Handbrake Software so I can watch them on Apple TV (using Handbrake's 'normal' default output settings).
After converting them I added the files to itunes. When I play these files on the Macbook they are great - all good.
When I then Synced with Apple TV the files are shown on the TV under the 'movies' menu with the names, duration and a photo of the film.
But when I play them on Apple TV I only hear the sound - There is no pictures.
Apple TV is connected with HDMI cable.
Does anyone know what could be causing this to happen? All responses welcome...

I use "hdmi to component converter" to connect apple tv with my old plasma tv by component cable. Sound is ok but the picture split 2screens left and right. Still can't fix it. Anyone can help or has any idea? should I try convert to av?

Your TV hasn't entered some odd picture in picture mode has it with two 'inputs' side by side?

i have this same issue. The sound was working fine. I have to pause the streaming, and then when I hit play again, no sound. I have also tried, unplugging, for 30 minutes (everything: sound cable, HDMI, power, and network) then restarting. I tried switching the HDMI source. The sound works fine on the tv without the apple tv or with the dvd. Just not with the apple tv. I have updated the software. The sound doesn't work for streaming via airplay, playing anything off itunes, it doens't even have sound for the sound effects when you navigate on the home screen. I too am extremely frustrated. Google TV here we come.

yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
ls /Volumes

In addition to pixel density, you are up against the translation driver card in the TV.
If you read the fine print of computer-resolution-capability in the TV user guide, you will see a chart as tall as the manual page. At the top is the smallest resolution capable, at the bottom is the full use of the 1080p in the TV.
Mac falls into the top 25% of the page, maxing out at 1366x768 often. This is because the TV control card is expected to do too much of the work, but is not designed for computer-monitor processing.
I looked at the resolution charts on 2 TVs before deciding to buy a 1080p LCD monitor that has a TV interface/connector. Computer monitor first, TV second. But the thing is only 27 in. Good thing TV is not as important to me as it is to others.

ok i just bought a new soundblaster Li've! 24-bit and i got the sound working but my microphone doesnt work... what the hak? im 50% positi've that its in the right jack, and i also disabled onboard sound on my BIOS and in my creative surround mixer application, under the REC section i changed to microphone and i made sure the "Do not monitor" has not been enabled. can you pleaseeee help me? thnx.., o yea more question, the soundblaster Li've! 24-bit uses creative labs EAX regular? not creative labs EAX 2 or 3. thx please answer

Welcome to the forums.
If you have a video that is muxed it is possible in converting it that one or the other tracks (audio or video) will get left behind. You will need to demux it first and then convert it to MPEG4 if this is the case:

Now, this assumes the video was MPEG1 or MPEG2 in the first place. If it started life as an MPEG4 it ought to convert properly -- check it out in iTunes (Ctrl-I) and see what the resolution and maxbit rate are to make sure they don't exceed the iPhone specs. If within the specs you can always try resetting your phone (it never hurts and sometimes helps).

23" Cinema HD Display-Turns on, recognised by Macbook Pro but no picture

I have a 23" Cinema HD Display. It turns on, my Macbook Pro can see it in the Displays panel but there is no picture.
*Any thoughts / ideas on how to get it working again?*
- The power light does not flash any diagnostic pattern.
- If I shine a torch to the display I can't see anything, even faintly.

I just posted a question about a similar problem. In my case I believe the cause of the problem is the Cinema HD Display 90w Power Adapter (a.k.a. the power brick). I was fortunate to test this out because we have several identical displays in my office.
My problem now is locating a new power adapter for the display. Apple doesn't seem to sell them online as a separate unit, as far as I can tell. I'm heading down to the local Apple Store next…

Had an Iphone 4 for about 3 months now. This happened to the first one I had and they ended up having to replace it at the apple store just a couple weeks ago 6/2. It happened again last night to my new one. This time i was able to correct it by going to itunes, backing up the phone to icloud, and then restoring the software. Mine did not work with voice memo, but did work with headphones plugged in, and would also work on speaker. I could hear callers but they couldn't hear me. I had purchased a new case (lifeproof case at $79.99) because it comes with plugs that cover the headphone jack, and the charging port, and is also waterproof. I heard that the root cause is due to lint, dirt, etc getting inside the headphone jack. Well, must be something else. It's a 10 days old phone, and has been in this overpriced case the whole time, and I have not used the headphones. I hope this doesn't keep happening.

Sound quit working but this solves the problem

Good news.......It seems that a lot of people are having the same problem with sound suddenly not working, even though all diagnostic test indicate that it is on. I unplugged the power and took out the battery for about 5 minutes. When I powered back up ......... the sound was working just fine. Give it a try. Toshiba does need to address this issue. I'm going to send in a complaint and suggest that others do the same.

I am having issues sending email from the apple mail application. reciving works but somtimes it takes an hour to send if at all. any thoughts?

I administrate an office and we switched to macs very recently. Now the problem I am having is one of the workstations will send emails but very slowly and it sometimes it doesn't send at all through apple mail. It work fine through gmail client but this client needs to use apple mail and it just won't send it will recieve messages flawlessly. Any ideas? This is the only computer having problems with this!

edited the rc.conf
sound works but when i reboot, before the root i get the error... sound card not found?

check in rc.conf and see if your sound module isn't listed. Odd that it doesn't find your sound card on boot.
U may also need to run alsactl store as root. Permission problem, possibly?
sounds like alsaconfig is finding and loading the module each time u reboot, but its not being loaded because I think u need to run alsactl store as root, since it needs to be loaded by the kernel. That would require root privileges I would think. That's my best guess.

Ok, I checked the tv, it works fine with vcr, so the pic and audio is good. the box is functioning, changing channels and such. the guide comes on to tell you what is on at that time and shows current, but no picture or sound....whats up with this??? I am in FL. Thanks for any help!

You might want to check your Fios TV page on the website to see if it says "Your STB record cannot be found". I started having this problem today. Everything was fine last night. I got forwarded from Verizon to somewhere else where they were supposed to add my boxes back in. The individual said it was done and I should have the picture back momentarily. I waited 1 and a half hours. Called back. gave them the "M" numbers for my 2 boxes. They said it would take up to 24 hours to get the picture back. Unfortunately that doesn't help me when their is boxing on tonight that I want to watch. If it is not fixed in time for football tomorrow I am not going to be happy.

Sound not working, but itunes works

i dont know what happened. im assuming i pressed some configuration of keys and did something. itunes works, plays music, if you select a ringtone it works, but only for the preview and not when my phone is ringing. no other sound effects works. what gives? i turned it off and back on and nothing.

I finally have sound thanks to this site!...
Essentially:
- double tap the home button
- swipe finger to the right & the orange music icon + play controls will appear at the bottom of the screen
- the sound icon will likely have a slash through it, indicating that the sound is muted --> tap the sound icon to remove this slash and turn the sound on
That's it!
*I also discovered that this set of controls provides quick access to altering screen brightness (located beside the sound icon), as opposed to adjusting it via settings (which is more time consuming)!!
Below are the directions provided on the site I referenced, which I paraphrased and provided additional details to above. Read these if you need further explanation:
"Open iPad “Settings” -> “General”, if “Use Side Switch to: ” is set to “Mute”, then make sure your iPad’s Side Switch is not turned on.
If “Use Side Switch to: ” is set to “Lock Rotation”, then double tap the “Home” button, swipe from left to right on the task bar, until reaching the first page. Make sure the “Sound” icon is not set to Mute."
