MPB 30" Monitor

I just purchased my first Mac product a MBP. What I’m trying to find out is if the MBP can support a 30" monitor with the following requirements for best viewing. "Have a dual-link DVI-D graphics card that supports 2560x1600 resolution”.

I connect MacBook Pro to a 24" Dell monitor every day at work, and nothing goes into convulsions. I also use a 24" Dell at home with my Quad G5.
Dell monitors are a much better value than the Apple monitors, and in my opinion, deliver better picture quality.
There are small issues - brightness control isn't as convenient, and there is no sleep button for the Mac on a Dell monitor.

  • External display suddenly isn't working any more

    Hello,
I have a MBP 13 (mid 2010) running OSX 10.8.4 conected with a Dell 1707fpt via DVI cable.
Everything worked fine without any problems until this morning and usually I have the MBP closed with an attached mouse and keyboard.
Since this morning the monitor no longer works on MBP. I therefore once connected my MBP to the DVI adapter and cable to another monitor (Samsung...) and it works. I also conected the Dell screen via DVI cable to another PC. It works as well.
Only the combination of my MBP and the Dell does not work! I put the adapter in the MBP and the MBP is just blue for a second and the internal monitor is functioning normally than. Unfortunately the Dell never wakes from sleep. I can only see the orange light (normal is green). Is there any solution? I've done PRAM and SMC reset.
Apparently all of the hardware works independently, only not together.
Oh and the monitor if it is connected does not appear on the MPB under "Monitors" ...
I was looking in some other communities and it seems that I'm not the only one with this problem, but no solutions found yet.
Do you have an idea how to fix this?

I am having similar symptoms using Lightroom 1.2 and CS2. I just updated to Lightroom 1.2 this week.
The first time I select edit in CS2 Photoshop launches fine and the image is transferred. If I attempt to edit a second image Lightroom hangs indefinitely on "Preparing the file for edit". Lightroom is dead at this point. Any attempted operation, including canceling the edit, just adds to the hanging stack. The only out I have found so far is to exit Lightroom, tell it to abandon all uncompleted tasks, and then restart it. At that point it will again work correctly to edit one image. It is the editing that causes the hanging, other functions performed after an edit do not (e.g. working in the develop module on a second image).
Lightroom 1.1 did not have this problem. The images I was working on were imported into Lightroom after I updated to 1.2. I am working under XP Pro and off of an internal (vs external) hard drive.

  • MPB/Monitor Problems

I've recently purchased a Samsung Monitor, and the Mini Digital Media to DVI adaptor for my 17" MBP, running snow leopard, and everytime I plag the laptop into the monitor, the monitor flashes. Which is obviously a refresh rate issue. Can I make it work?

But, regardless, the monitor is working now. I didn't do anything, it just started working.
Just for your future reference, that's a 15" machine.
I suspect that "jiggling" prefs may have righted something, or maybe the connection wasn't tight on one end or the other. Either way, glad it's working for you.

  • Color problems with duo monitor (MPB and 24' Cinema Display)

I have a new 24' Cinema Display attached to my 15' macBook pro 2.66 (not the new one with the SD slot) and I keep getting weird colors on the MBP display.
Here is a screengrab from the MBP. The main display is fine. What is my MBP screen experiencing?!
    http://www.madreview.com/images/screengrab.jpg
You can ell the colors are off on Tiger Woods on the bottom and on the background. Please help.

If I may jump in, I have almost the same question and would like to clarify the Cmd-F1 suggestion. (I'm looking at buying the 24" LED for my slightly older MBP with max resolution 1440x900.) If one runs this monitor in extended desktop mode, you can reach the max resolution for the monitor, if I understand correctly, but is some of your "desktop" then spread across your built-in MBP LCD? That's less useful than having the entire 24" available for keeping multiple windows open.
Just want to understand whether this is really worth it! Thanks, and PMFJI.

  • Often lose wireless connection when using HDTV as monitor

I have an unusual wireless networking problem when using my Samsung HDTV in my living room as a monitor for my MacBook (when watching Internet TV shows, for example). Frequently when I switch URLs, networking freezes, even though the connection appears strong, with the Airport symbol at the top of my screen showing all bars. To re-establish the wireless connection, I have to go through the process of re-joining my network through the “Join Other Network" option. The signal holds as long as I don’t try to change it, as in selecting another URL.
I connect to my HDTV via HDMI cable, using a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter from my Macbook’s video-out port. The audio connection is a mini-plug from the Mac’s headphone out jack to stereo RCA plugs associated with the TV’s HDMI port.
The wireless connection is through a Lynksys Wireless-G 2.4 Ghz, 54 Mpbs Broadband router.
I’d appreciate any solutions the Apple user community has to offer.

I'd say this has nothing to do with your display. The problem will likely lie in either your router settings, network settings or a simple signal strength issue. Try first changing the broadcast channel on your router, and make sure all settings are correct for your desired network.

  • After OSX.4.11 update external monitor unresponsive+problems w/sleep etc

I've read some of the recent display problems. Here is my problem and what I've tried, my problem just started 6 hrs ago. I updated to OSX.4.11 a few days ago - eveything worked fine, yesterday I reinstalled epson printer driver as it was crashing and also yesterday I worked for several hours in iMovie 08. Nothing else unusual. This is STRANGE!
Today went to wake my MBP, 2.4 GHZ, 4GB ram, Cinema display 20", wireless keyboard/mouse up from sleep to check mail. Cinema display flickered and then changed to dark blue solid - and unresponsive. Couldn't get external display to function. Never had any problems with it. Tried to restart everything, unplug all cords, etc. Everything started up I got the log in password screen on my external cinema display - typed in my password - then saw my desktop photo for a second and the cinema display flickered to dark blue again and wouldn't change. It was unable to mount the desktop.
I went to my MPB while still connected got the screen on the MBP and saw the desktop but there were sort of black lines through the names of my folder files on my desktop. I then disconnected the cinema display, restarted just the MBP and the screen (of the MBP) that mounted was perfectly normal - no black lines through file folder names.
Then I tried various things. I assumed my cinema display was broken (almost 3 years old). But then I hooked my MBP up to an old 20" cinema display (they kind with 4:5 ratio and plastic all around), I think it uses some kind of converter to the DVI port anyway my MPB worked with that old display fine, desktop fine, but it would not stay asleep - no matter what I tried. I've never had that problem ever before.
Then I took the "newer" 3 year old cinema display (aluminum one) that I use all the time I I suspected was busted and hooked it up to my old Powerbook G4. And it mounted the desktop and worked fine!! The G4 just got updated to 10.4.11. Interesting thing is though when I closed the lid which usually made the G4 PB sleep it shut it down instead of making it sleep. Very odd.
Then I ran down to Apple store and bought new version of Disk Warrior and ran it on my MBP. I've never had anything Disk Warrior couldn't fix. It rebuilt my directory. I then hooked the MBP back up to the cinema display (aluminum) and the same thing happened I got my log in screen after startup, logged in password saw the photo desktop for a second then the cinema display went back to a dark blue screen that was unresponsive. I then ran Disk Warrior again with the cinema display attached to see what would happen. Disk Warrior mounted and I saw the whole process on the cinema display. The cinema display will mount disk warrior but it will not mount the MBP desktop as of 6 hours ago.
I then read these recent posts and tried a "safe" boot. I got my MBP desktop on the cinema display (aluminum) but as soon as I clicked on system prefs the cinema display went to dark blue unresponsive screen.
But the same cinema display (aluminum) works fine with the Powerbook G4 except for some issue with sleep
And the MBP works with an old plastic cinema display except again, it won't stay asleep.
But the MBP and the aluminum cinema display that I've been using together for my photo/video editing for 4 months straight now and I've never had any problems with - they won't work together as of 6 hours ago. That is when I get the dark blue unresponsive screen on the cinema display (aluminum).
    Upshot is:
    1) Something is up with sleep mode and the OS X.4.11 update on 2 different machines (G4 PB and MBP)
    2) Something is affecting the way both the MBP and the Powerbook react with both my cinema displays. The MBP and the 20" aluminum Cinema display are the ones I need to work with and the ones that as of 6 hours ago just lock up in cinema display dark blue screen (almost black but not quite).
Is this a problem with sleep, startup or DVI output and OS X.4.11?
What can I do about it? I need to use my 20" aluminum cinema display it is clearly the better one of my 2 cinema displays. And even if I switch to my 20" older plastic apple cinema display the computer won't stay asleep any longer?
Please, Please I need some help.
Also since this is happening on 2 separate machines and 2 separate monitors there is something odd going on.
Apple tech people, is there a major problem with .11 and sleep and external displays?
    Sincere Thanks, Carol
PS Note, I tried all this numerous times with both bluetooth and regular wired keyboards/mice along with MBP and PB keypads.

Sorry please forgive me, I'm so exhausted I posted this in MacBook instead of MacBook Pro, I'll try to move it but if I can't I'll try to copy it and post in MacBook Pro, regardless I think there is a problem with the .11 update.

  • Out to tv monitor

I've been trying to go out to an lcd tv I have next to my MPB and I'm trying to make it an extended desktop, the back of the TV has a VGA input and when cycling through the "input" settings on the tv there's everything, component 1, component 2, etc, then "PC" for the VGA input.
Obviously the DVI->VGA adaptor that comes with the comp isn't nearly long enough, so at an electronics store I was looking for a male to male VGA to make a longer connecter, all they had was a much longer DVI to VGA (male) and since that's what I needed I got it, I took it home and hooked it up and selected 'detect displays' and it detects it, it reads that there is a TV monitor connected... but when I'm viewing the VGA input on the TV I see nothing. If it were a black screen I'd think the resolution wasn't matching and that can be fixed but the screen is just blue, like when you are on an input setting but not receiving any signal...
    help, please.

You mention the MBP is properly detecting the TV. So what resolution is being sent to the TV? Have you tried alternates? Are alternates even offered under Display Prefs?
It could be the video cable. VGA-to-VGA cables are very common. They ship with virtually every monitor sold. Can you possibly borrow one from someone and try that with the DVI-to-VGA adapter?

  • Connect MBP to external Samsung monitor

Hi all, I see similar q & a's but not exactly this :-
I have a late '09 MPB (pre thunderbolt), I want to connect to a Samsung SyncMaster 940MW.
I currently run 2 of these synmasters as a dual display for my MacPro with no problems using two DVI cables.
I purchased a (I admit 3rd party) Mini DVI to DVI adaptor and I get no picture - just black screen
I am not sure if that's the correct name for the port on the MBP but its the correct plug on the adaptor cable.
The DVI end is the same dual link DVI as mates with the cable to the monitor.
Not sure if i've described it well enough, and I don't think I can put a picture of the adaptor cable up?
    Any ideas folks?
    Thanks Graham

Mini-divi?  According to MacTracker 2009 MBP's have a mini-displayport.  So you need a mini-displayport to single link dvi adapter (since that monitor's max resolution is only 1440 x 900).
Assuming you are just wrong about the terminology because I don't know how you could plug a mini-dvi into a mini-displayport anyhow make sure the mini-displayport plug is pushed firmly in so that essentially all the metal part disappears inside the socket.  Mini-displayport plugs can be a little tricky in that you need to make sure the plug is fully seated in their socket.
On your computer, if you open the Displays preferences and do not see an Arrangement tab (or there is an Arrangement tab that shows only a single monitor) then there is something physically wrong with the connection.  Try clicking Detect Displays just to see if the computer can now sense the presence of the connection.
If you do have an Arrangement tab, and it shows two screens, then click Gather Windows to bring the monitor's Displays preferences on to your main screen.  Set the proper resolution (1440 x 900 I hope is shown).  Set the refresh rate if that preference is shown.  Hopefully you should see a picture at this point.
The DVI end is the same dual link DVI as mates with the cable to the monitor.
They all are physically compatible.  They only differ by which pins are used.  See the pictures here.
Dual-link dvi adapters look a bit different and require additional power supplied by usb.  You only need dual link adapters if the video resolution is greater than 1920 x 1200.

  • [Solved] Playing movie on external monitor gives me a blue screen

Nevermind.  I found the xvattr package in the AUR.
I've tried this on both VLC and Mplayer and everytime the movie starts I see blue instead.  On the built in monitor for my laptop the DVD is viewable.  To get tv-out I use this command:
    xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1024x768
I thought that this might have to do with the standard that is set so I tried to change it with the advice on the wiki (for ATi drivers):
xrandr --output VGA-0 --set tv_standard ntsc
    But it gives me this:
X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
Major opcode of failed request: 150 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 11 (RRQueryOutputProperty)
Serial number of failed request: 27
Current serial number in output stream: 27
How do I get DVD's to play on an external monitor?

So I have the exact same issue (never a problem with my G4 12" Powerbook).
I found this in an Apple support document:
"When you are finished using your MacBook Pro, MacBook, or PowerBook G4 in closed-lid mode, the internal display will not come on when you open the lid until you have disconnected the external display. If you want the internal display to enable again, remove the external display connector, put the computer to sleep, and then open the lid. This will toggle the computer to come out of closed-lid mode and once again provide power and a video signal to the internal display."
I'm not sure how you put the MBP to sleep in closed lid mode if you have already removed the external display....
I am going to try putting the MPB to sleep, THEN removing the external display, then re-waking..... We'll see
    The article is at:

  • Thunderbolt + DVI chained monitors on Macbook Pro

    Hi All,
I'm a software engineer, and I work on building distributed systems.  I usually have my IDE window open on my Thunderbolt display and several terminal/ssh windows open on my MBP's display.  I'm getting to the point where I'm connecting to too many nodes to fit them onto my MBP display.  I have a spare Acer monitor I previously had connected via a DVI->Thunderbolt adapter cable to my MPB.  I only have 1 thunderbolt port in my MBP, and I've tried the following configuration. Unfortunately, my Acer monitor doesn't receive any video from the MBP.  Is it possible to have 2 external monitors with the following configurations.
    Acert--(DVI + Thunderbolt adapter)---> Thunderbolt display----> MBP
Where --> is the male adapter of the cable.
    Thanks in advance!
    Todd

Anyone?  This seems like it should work.  It's my understanding that thunderbolt is just a comm's bus, so I'm suprised the the monitor didn't "just work".  I'm not sure what else I need to do, does this require special hardware?
    Thanks,
    Todd

  • Problem with mpseal.exe referencing an MPB file

Is the mpseal.exe that came with scom 2012 R2 (dated 9/6/2013) capable of sealing a management pack that contains references to management packs that are included as only MPB files?
I get a missing reference error when sealing a management pack referencing Microsoft.SystemCenter.Visualization.Component.Library for which I have the mpb (version 7.1.10226.1015) in the INCLUDE directory.

One way to fix this is to locate the *.mp file for this mpb and put that in my INCLUDE directory, but I cannot find that *.mp file.
Is this fixed with a new version of mpseal.exe?  Worst case, I will pull out the dashboard stuff from this management pack and leave it unsealed.  I use sealed management packs as a way to ensure the version from one management group to another
    is the same.
    Ted

Thanks for the insight here. I was able to use this, along with the following post to figure this out:
    http://scsmnz.net/sealing-a-management-pack-using-fastseal-exe/
Basically, I didn't use fastseal, but I did use the article to get the new public key token from the key pair I was using and then replace the <ManagementPackPublicKeyToken> for the management pack that was being referenced in the management pack that
I was getting the error on when trying to seal it.
In a nutshell (from above article):
Extract the public key from your new snk into a second new snk:
    sn -p yourkey.snk yourpublickey.snk
Get the readable public key token from the second file:
    sn -tp yourpublickey.snk > yourpublickeytoken.txt
The last line of the txt file will say something like “Public key token is c2e33c3aa46ba97e”. You need this value in your Management Pack.
Note that sn.exe switches are case sensitive.
Edit the XML for the management pack you are trying to seal and replace the value between the following tags with the new public key token you found above (make sure it is the one associated with the <ManagementPackName> for the MP that is being referenced,
there might be more than one and if you edit the wrong one you'll just cause more problems):
    <ManagementPackPublicKeyToken>OldTokenHere-RefencedInError</ManagementPackPublicKeyToken>
Save, and then you should be able to seal it.
    Hope that helps.

  • Closed Screen, External Monitor, Heat, and Fans

We have our MBP connected to an external Dell Ultra 22" dvi monitor (awesome!). We use apple BT keyboard and mighty mouse (again awesome!). Now, my concerns:
    1. Screen damage from keyboard - I've read (to my disbelief) that mac laptop/portable machines can't be closed without some type of material laid on the keyboard to protect the screen. Is this true? If yes, does this cause a heating problem?
    2. We use the MBP for email, web surfing, calendar, etc. Nothing very heavy at all. The fan comes on after 20-30 minutes of working and the machine is very hot (iStat 140F for processor and graphics processor).
Since moving over to mac at the release of the intel processors, I've bought 4 (17" imac, 20" imac, 24" imac, and now a 15" MPB). I do love the look and the OS but some of the issues are kinda silly. I can't believe we tolerate it so well.
Anyway, thanks for looking and any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

While many of us use some fabric that sits between the keyboard and the screen, such as ScreenSavrz its not needed. There is some clearance between the keys and the screen. I like it there just to be sure As for creating heating problems I don't keep the fabric on the keys while its own.

My MBP runs between 50 and 60c which is right in the ball park of your temps. Ambient temperatures also effect how quickly the MBP will warm up. That is, if its 32c (90f) then the mbp is going to get hotter quicker. I recommend a little app called SmcFanControl It gives you the ability to set the fan speed and thus provide better heat management on your MBP.

Well all computers and operating systems have their own idiosyncacies. Overall I think Macs and OSX are so much superior to windows and Dells that I don't mind some of the stuff we need to put up with

I tried 1080p and the screen look terrible. fonts are blurry, color off and there is a black (thick about 2") around the center where the '1080p' image is. I tried overscan, and it overshoot. and the picture / text are still blurry.
Apple Store said MPB 5,2 can't drive 1080p, but spec says can it drive up to 2560x1600. Did I missed something? There is no setting on this tv for 1:1 mapping. I tried both HDMI ports, restart in various order and even tried VGA (which at 800x400 looked better than HDMI).
Can this laptop drive a full 1080p HDTV at a clear enough resolution (no fuzzy and use all pixels) like a regular LCD monitor?
I took my laptop and cable to SamsClub, and tried hooking up to 22" JVC, 22" VIzio and anew 26" Vizio with the same outcome. It will not have a full screen 1080, and the display preferences doesn't show 1920x1080 as a setting and the 1080p setting look like crap.
So. Can I do this setup? what TV would work or what options have you all have?

First of all, the current stable driver from the repos is newer than what you have installed (349). Arch is quick on the uptake with new software versions, there's seldom a need to go into AUR if what you need is the latest driver.
Second, your notebook is likely using optimus, so you should be using Bumblebee and read through this article to find out how to set it up: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bumblebee

  • Connecting a 144hz monitor to 15'' retina macbook pro?

Hi, I recently bought the benq xl2411z 24'' monitor which has the capacity to run in 140hz as opposed to 60hz. I have been told that you cannot run 144hz in OSX but you can do it in Windows (bootcamp),
Right now the screen is connected via HDMI; however, I have been told that HDMI is incapable of running 140hz and that I need to use DVI.
So basically, I'm wondering what is the best way to connect the external monitor to run 144hz?
    Thanks!
BTW I have a mid 2014 retina macbook pro 15'' with intel iris pro (not discrete graphics).

Thanks for the reply, I eventually figured it out on my own. But for anyone else looking into this, yeah you need a Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI converter (the expensive one, not just the Mini Displayport to DVI). It does run 144Hz which is good. In my case I have a eGPU I was building, so in the end I didn't need the adaptor after all; but for most people you'll need the adaptor if you want to connect a high refresh rate monitor directly to your MPB.

  • MBP 17"  + 2 Dell 24" Monitors = ?

Currently I have my 17" MPB connected to my 24" Dell LCD monitor using a miniDvi to VGA adaptor. This setup works fine. Is there anyway I can connect a 2nd Dell 24" monitor to my setup? Even if it means sacrificing my actual MBP screen.
    I know, I am greedy

The Matrox DualHead2Go is one of the better solutions out there. Your sig says your MBP has Mini DVI, something the MBP never came with. I assume you mean Mini DisplayPort. Anyway, you'll have to chose your compatible model here:
