MPB behaving strange after (automatic) winter time adjustment

Last night I left my MPB running when I went to sleep. I presume it eventually shut down to standby before it automatically changed the time in order to adjust to daylight saving time.
About 9:30 I was woken by the fans working at maximum speed. My MBP was not warm at all and I remembered shortly waking up earlier that night and already hearing the fan noise but since it did not cross my mind that the MPB could be the source I went back to sleep. So probably the fans were working all night.
The MPB battery was completely drained although the magsafe connector had been connected all night and was displaying the orange charge indicator.
The date and time was reset to 1am 01.01.2001 and the MBP neither started charging the battery nor would it let me connect to my wifi network until I corrected the date manually.
What happened here? Am I the only one who experienced this?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Not really sure what happened, but it sounds like your Mac may have lost all power at some point. The power adaptor, the battery, and the logic board battery all serve to keep the time and date correct. Generally if the power adaptor is not connected and the main battery becomes drained, then the logic board battery should be able to keep track of the date and time.
It sounds like possibly the power went off for a while, the battery drained, and the logic board battery was not able to retain the date and time. Don't know if this is what happened, but it's a possible scenario that would explain what happened with the date and time.
However, I have no idea why the fans should have been going at maximum speed. Does everything seem to be working OK now?

  • Safari behaves strangely after upgrading to Lion

After upgrading to Lion, Safari is behaving strangely. When re-opening Safari after quitting, all windows from previous session re-opens. It didn't used to happen and also quite annoying. How can that be fixed? I only want my homepage to open, if I individually quit the windows by the red x-button, and then quite Safari normally, it opens up as priviously. Any ideas?
    thanks

It is one of the over 250 new features of the World's Most Advanced Operating System called Resume.
If this is all that's bothering you just close all windows before quitting Safari or hold Shift when you launch Safari
If the whole resume thing is overbearing then...
Also in System Preferences > General there is a hard-to-find checkbox under "Number of recent items" you can turn off.
Also, you can hold the shift key to disable resume on a one time basis.
If you want to turn it off on a per app basis, (TextEdit is by example, replace TextEdit with the name of the app)
Launch Terminal and copy/paste this at the prompt...
defaults write com.apple.TextEdit NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false
    Press return.
YOu can aslo accomplish this thriugh the GUI by going to ~/Library/Saved Application State/TextEdit and delete that file/
    To turn off Resume globally...
    chflags uchg ~/Library/"Saved Application State"
    Press return
The reverse of the first one is to replace false with true.
The reverse of the second one is
    chflags nouchg ~/Library/"Saved Application State"
Again, you can accomplish this through Finder by going to ~/Library/Saved Application State and deleting the folder.

  • MacBook Pro (Early 2011) behaves strange after GPU replacement

I have an early MBP 2011 and had the GPU issue. After Apple finally announced the replace program I immediatelly went to a a stor and the fixed it. But now my System acts very strangely ever since. Here a list of all the strange things:
    - The overall performance is not as good as it was bevore
    - Yosemite allways asks for my iCloud Password on startup. If I enter it, the message just reappears. this happens till I click on "cancel" twice! (In the accounts settings everything is running and all the options in the iCloud menu are checked)
    - the spotlight search does not work anymore. If I enter something and press Enter nothing happens except spotlight is freezing on the spot for some time till it disappears.
    - Safari, iTunes and Mail have no, of very little, internet connection. But the strange thing is: Chrome does!!!
    - Finder sometimes does not work correctly. I have to restart it quite often (I never had to do this before) and sometimes it does not react when clicking on the dock icon.
For me all this makes no sense. What is wrong with my system?
I should mention: I built in 8GB of ram (over two years ago) and I put an SSD in and removed the optical drive (over a year ago). I use the TRIM enabler for the SSD.
    Thanks for any help!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1281 ' 0.5 0.25 50 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 5 5 5 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1 300 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144 20     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

  • Computer Behaving Strangely After Adding ADC Monitor

I recently added a 15" ADC monitor to my daughter's quicksilver G4 and ever since the computer has been turning itself on at random times during the day and night. I have zapped the PRAM many times and have even replaced the PRAM battery. I can't end this weird behavior. I have tried swapping video cards - the current one is a Radeon mac pro 9000. The computer is a 733 MHz with 768MB of ram and it's running OS 10.4.10

The monitor in question does have a remote start button and no we don't have housepets. I've seen it go on all by itself. The connections are all solid and the monitor behaves the same on different computers and with different video cards. A defective button seems a very likely suspect. Before I go drop this monitor in the garbage ( I mean take it to the recycling center) is there a way to replace the button or does this monitor present a non-user friendly environment upon opening. This monitor didn't cost enough to spend a lot of money fixing.......but it is a really pleasant screen to look at.

  • Mail behaving strangely after Mavericks update

The Mail app opens no problem, I can see all of my mail and folders on the left (iCloud & Gmail accounts) but when i try to open a mail to read it nothing happens. I can see I have mail in my inbox but I cannot open it to read it. Then, after maybe a minute, Mail becomes totally unresponsive. I cannot click or highlight anything. In effect Mail is now completely useless. Not sure what is going on or how to fix it?

I had the same issue yesterday. For a time it stopped working altogther. It would open but I couldn't do anything. I shutdown several times without any luck, but this morning when I started up it opened fine and everything is still there.
As an aside, and a reason I am here this morning, is that the app store is telling me I have to download Mavericks when it's alread installed. I did download it yesterday, again, but the message is still there.
Good luck, but I think mail will recover itself.

  • GDM behaves strangely after gnome 3.6 update

I searched the forum for a similar problem but I couldn't find anything.
I updated my system to gnome 3.6; upon reboot (I'm on a full systemd system) I noticed:
    - the boot was slower than usual
    - the console screen (which usually I see only for a couple of seconds before GDM kicks in) lasted for longer than usual, while the mouse pointer appeared upon it for a few seconds
    - then appeared the blue stripes GDM background, but only for an instant
    - the screen then became grey, and *on this grey background* appeared the panel with my username, where I can put my password and login
I was able to login in Gnome 3.6 which, apparently, is running fine.

This is not what I am looking for. GDM is still much too slow, since I am booting from an SSD drive. The system takes less than 10 seconds until the first sign of GDM activity appears - this is the mouse pointer in front of the systemd starting output. Then it takes about 5 seconds before GDM shows an image, and then again 2-3 seconds before the gray background appears and I can finally log in.
I found the switch for detailed debug output: Somewhere in the arch bbs I read to add "Enabled=yes" to /etc/gdm/custom.conf's [debug]-section. This is wrong, it has to be "Enabled=true". Now i get debug output, and the timestamps show where it hangs:

Maybe now there is a bit more content to analyze? Here is my /etc/gdm/custom.conf:
    # GDM configuration storage
    [daemon]
    [security]
    [xdmcp]
    [greeter]
    [chooser]
    [debug]
    Enable=true
I hope this helps. I really wonder if there is some issue with a timed login since there is nothing like that defined in the custom.conf file.
EDIT: Just to mention there is nothing wrong with the gdm home directory, I cleared it without any change.

  • Browser now behaving strangely after 1.0.7.2670 upgrade

Strange in two ways - not sure if related.
    1) when first  logged into gmail, the whole email user interface is offset a little higher (say 1/2 cm) so that at the bottom beyond the blue frame showing the "logout" button, there is this white space. When I scroll the email list on the left, sometimes it works but most times it just drags the whole email user inferface around as if it is letting me reposition the whole thing on the screen.
    2) when I view this very forum on the browser, when first loading the page it appears normal. However, once I click into any of the threads and then go back to the prior page, the view is zoomed in. By that I mean the fonts of the thread titles don't seem (at first) to change but the date of the threads on the right hand side no longer show. Then when I pinch to zoom out, the dates show up but then all the fonts become very small. Hence the "zoomed in" look I was referring to.
Any ideas folks? Bugs to be fixed in the next release or some setting I'm not aware of? Thanks.

hello, about the GMail interface, there are four browser interfaces:
the basic HTML website : two columns : folders on the left, and messages list on the right (when you click on a message, it opens a new page containing the message)
the desktop website, two columns : folders on the left, with chat window, and messages list or discussion on the right.
the mobile HTML5 website, with two panes : on the left, the messages list, and on the right the current discussion
the mobile HTML4 website : just one messages list, with some actions at the bottom. It is the one you can get with the OS5 browser on the 9000.
With the PlayBook browser you can access interfaces  1,2,3. Which one are you referring to? If you are using interface 2, which I do not recommend because scrolling is not practical, which GMail theme are you using?
The search box on top-right of this page is your true friend, and the public Knowledge Base too:

  • LR 3.56 behaving strangely after update to MAC OS 10.7.2

When I go to the develop module with a previous import, and click on an image in the small row of images below the main part of the window, the large image says loading for a few seconds and then ends up black. If I then go to the slideshow or print module, the same image displays properly.

Problem resolved:  I re-installed MAC OS 10.7.2 and LR3.5 started behaving just as before-  works very well.  I was suspicious because another image processing program started behaving oddly.

  • DVD Studio Pro 4 behaving strangely after install

Hi. I just did an upgrade from DVDSP 3 to 4 and it’s not going smoothly. First, I hadn’t used 3 in a while and in the interim, I went from OS 10.3.9 to 10.4.9. When I finally opened DVDSP 3, it was not a happy camper: slow and full of unusual quirks, such as when I go to IMPORT -> ASSETS, the pop up window disappears immediately and then is no longer accessible; when I import assets via the Assets window, the assets come in, however the "importing assets" progress window will not close; and I could not open preferences.
OK, so I upgraded to 4, but with all the same results. It’s acting very buggy. What can I do? I found another post in this discussion, all the back to late ’05, which cited the “Preferences window won’t open problem” but he/she was very vague about how that problem was solved.
Also, Compressor 2 won’t stay open for more than a second before quitting out. (I posted this issue on the Compressor board, of course.) I have a feeling these things are hand-in-hand.
    Thanks!!

There are error messages for Compressor. In the console.log:

As for DVD SP, nothing pops up in the system.log, but the console.log has this error:

  • Software issues after restoring from Time Machine backup.

    Hi all,
I recently had to do a full restore from my time machine back ups. Everything worked flawlessly and when the restore was done, I appeared to have my OS, apps and data all the way they were prior to the failure.
Now I'm experiencing strange behavior from some of my applications.
First, when I use Safari’s "Top Sites" feature it shuts down the application with no associated error message.
Second, when I attempted to launch MS Word, I received an error stating that there was a problem with the Office database and it instructed me to use the included db repair utility (I'm sorry, I'm at work and I don't have access to the actual error messages at the moment). I did this, and after some time it reported the same error.
I shrugged my shoulders and used the included uninstall to remove Office from my machine and then re-installed. After the install was complete I launched Word and got the same error.
Is there any history of applications behaving strangely after a Time Machine restore? How can I totally remove MS Office such that whatever db the error references is gone as well?

The hard drive was bad. The OS locked up after trying to load iTunes. I rebooted and after the reboot everything ran very, very slowly. After several reboot attempts, the machine would not boot past the grey apple screen. I attempted to use /sbin/fsck -fy to repair and after running that several times (with varying outputs but all stating that the disk could not be repaired) I eventually was getting the same output over and over with a statement that no repair could be made.
I then bought Disk Warrior and ran it against my iMac using my wife's MacBook Pro. Disk Warrior returned a similar error stating that the disk couldn't be repaired.
Finally, I decided to re-install the OS and restore from back up but after several attempts to re-install the install would invariably fail after the consistency check of the DVD had completed and the install was to begin. It said something short like "There was an error with this install. Please try installing again." At this point, I surmised that the disk was a lost cause. I had the hard drive replaced and then restored from my Time Machine back up.
After the change in hard drive, the OS install ran just fine and the restore ran fine as well.
    Thanks!

  • After effects video automatic time adjustment

With adobe after effects I am currently producing wedding picture videos. If I want to run 6 videos at 10 seconds a piece for the first hour, then on the second hour I want to run 5 videos for 12 seconds a piece. How do I program after effects to automatically adjust?
    Thanks

no that is not what i am trying to do.
if i take out a picute or take out a video  is there a way to make after effects fill or adjust the time of the missing picture or video without having to edit the entire Comp?
or is there another adobe program that can do an automatic fill and re calculate the time for missing footage?
    example see perivous post.
i guess a simple question > is there a way to auto recaluate time to fill the missing area?

    Hello s0ha1b
If all you get is the Apple logo and it powering off, then the next step is to put your iPhone into recovery mode and then use iTunes to restore it. If you have a back up, then you can put that on there to once the restore is complete.
If you can't update or restore your iOS device

  • Has anyone ever encountered layer blend modes behaving strangely?

I use photoshop quite a bit for retouching and photo compositing. Tonight I encountered a strange problem. I was trying to create a vintage look on a photo and had a number of adjustment layers including a curves, levels, color fill and there were also a few texture/noise layers all set to varying opacities. Near the top of all this I had a vignette layer that was black around the edges and white in the center set to blend mode of multiply. Well, when I was clicking on and off I realize that that vignette layer was definitely lightening the center part of the overall image quite a bit (the part that is white on the vignette layer), almost like a screen. So I flipped the vignette layer through different opacity modes and saw that there was no change in its behavior, every mode was screening the white, even darker color and multiply. I thought maybe it was interacting in a weird way with one of the other layers so I turned all the others off except the back ground-- still no change. Then I dropped the layer down one at time until it was below the background. When I started to move it up again, it was behaving normally for a moment until I moved it up a couple levels in the stacking order and then it went back to the screen behavior. Anyway I shuffled it around a bit but there was no consitency to when it would display the correct opacity and when it wouldn't, so it did not seem to be an interaction with any specific layer. I don't know, but I can't really think of any case where white set to multiply should produce a lighter result even if it were interacting with another opacity. In any case it does seem to me that there is something going on with the overall computation of opacities. I tried creating a new black and white layer and it was also doing the same thing, behaving strange and not displaying the correct opacity.
I'm tired, so I'm going to bed. I'm going to shut off the computer and hope this goes away when I reboot, but if it does not, does this sound familiar to anyone? I'm not a regular visitor to this forum, but I thought I'd put it out there in case anyone else has experienced anything like this. I've only got 5 gigs of ram on this computer and I've been working away for a while... maybe photoshop just couldn't keep up(?) I'm using Photoshop CS5, RGB Adobe 1998 colorspace.  I've never had anything like this happen in the last 11 years I've been using photoshop. Hmmm.... hope I don't have to reinstall or call support or worse. fingers crossed.

Nevermind. It is still having the problem. I have to think that this file is just corrupt somehow because I just opened another file and can't seem to cause the same problem. Basically, I can fill a layer with white, put it to a blend mode of multiply or darker color and it will block out everything of the image below, ie totally opaque. The opaqueness varies depending on the if there are other layers also on blend modes, but it does not seem to correspond to normal blend mode interaction. If I put it right on top of a regular layer with an image on it, it totally blocks it out on a blend mode of multiply... weird. I am going to scrap this file and see if the problem recurs in other files. My 2006 Mac Pro is getting some years on it and has been running pretty slow. I'm not a hardware expert but I've done everything I know how to do to maintain it. Was thinking of upping the ram to see if I can hold out a bit longer before I upgrade the computer. Wouldn't surprise me if this problem is related to the computer.

  • Finder behaving strange

    Hi everybody,
After upgrading to Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite, my Finder is behaving strange. Every time I open op a new Finder window, it appears like below image. The icons look very strange and they are not clickable, well you can click something and notice a change in the window name in the top.
I really don't know what is happening, nor don't I know what to search for, to find a solution, as I even can describe i properly.
My Mac specs is as below:
I hope some of you guys might be able to help!
    Love and cheers!
    Kenn Nielsen,

Is Dropbox the only application you are seeing this in? Try the list and column view to see if you get the same thing.
    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.
