MPB, Fireface 800 and a 1TB drive, what next?¿?¿?¿

Hi
I just got a bare 1TB SATA HD WDC drive
I use this set up to record:
Computer: MBP 17" Hi Res
Interface: FireFace800.
*Options on Audio interface*: FW400/FW800
*Options on Computer*: USB, FW400/FW800, possibly SATA with a Xpress card.
+I know USB is un reliable and taxes the system, and for a Sata direct connection i will have to find a Xpress card that works with the MBP, if i am lucky.+
I was getting error after error before running of USB drives so i ran out and got this SATA drive here.
Now what i am asking here is what the best method i should use to get the most out of this drive., should i get a external sata to FW 800, or a Sata to Sata xpress for the computer, and shold i partition it as well?
Cheers

Thanks for your post!
Maybe i should get a enclosure with Firewire 800, 400, eSata and USB well as
In the mean time, i borrowed a very expensive one from our studio and i need to format this drive and at least load some sessions on it until i decide which enclosure.
--> So should i make a single GUIDE partition?
--> you guys reckon i go Sata Xpress card enclosure all the way and if so which ones would you recommend?

  • Seagate Barracuda ES.2 and 7200.11 drives - what's the difference?

I use my Mac Pro for music and so I currently have three 500Gb HDs installed, one for the OS and apps, one for samples and one which I record audio on to.
I want to install a 1TB drive into the remaining bay for backing up the samples and audio drives, but I don't know what is the difference between the 7200.11 and ES.2 Seagate drives - apart from about £70GBP, that is!
Please can anybody explain what the difference is and which is best for installation into a Mac Pro. I'm running OS 10.5.2
    Many thanks.

ES for enterprise server. Supposedly longer mean time between failures (more robust). I faced the same choice and after reading some tests that showed the ES version of the 1000Gb drive to be slower than the 7200.11 version, I bought two of the 7200.11s. Right or wrong about the speed difference, I am happy with 'em.
As easy to install the drives into your Mac Pro as installing software (Seagate or other drives).

  • RME Fireface 800 and Final Cut Pro

    Hi Forum
I have a RME Fireface 800. Trying to make it record in Final Cut Pro 6.05 and Soundtrack Pro. I't won't. Only through built in Mic can I record in FCP (or Line-in in iMac)
When using Fireface as default sound device, I see an input signal on the unit and I can hear output but ONLY through headset. I've been trying to fiddle with the settings in the Fireface Mixer but with no luck. (Everything works as it should in Cubase)
Fireface 800 connected through external hardrive, LaCie.
(Fireface 800 doesn't work if I plug it directly into the iMac, something with the firewire chip, they told me at the music store when I couldn't get Cubase 5 to work - it now works with that setup)
I'm using firewire 800 cable. Anybody can help me out?
    All the best, Ulrich

Did anyone have to roll back their firewire drivers to get the FireFace to work with OSX 10.4.10 on Intel - as mentioned here for a competing product?

  • Help! Lost all Captured Video Files Using FCE 3.5 and Lacie 1TB Drive

    Hi all...
I was wondering if anyone here could advise me on a most dissapointing occurence...
A few weeks ago, I started learning Final Cut Express 3.5. I began by setting my scratch disk to my new Lacie 1TB drive and loading about 5 tapes to the drive via the capture function in FCE... all went well. I then spent the next couple of days organizing all the clips and subclips into bins that I made based on the kind of clips I had shot (my first doc attempt on a local photographer).
Editing a trailer of sorts to practice in FCE, I slowly but surely came to understand the power and functionality of FCE... things were going well. Along with the clips, I also added folders on the hard drive with still photographs, title cards made in photoshop and sound clips that I had made of traffic noises with a mp3 recorder (all sound files were converted to aiff files in quicktime pro). All these files from the hard drive were then imported into FCE and put into their own bins in the browser to keep them seperate from everything else.
Late last night, while opening FCE for another session, the software reported that all of my video files were "offline" and "did I want to reconnect them". I'd had this warning before, but only when my Lacie drive hadn't been turned on while starting up FCE... this time it was on and I was still getting the reconnect warning.
Now I find that ALL of my video files are gone!! The 200 GB of space they took up on the Lacie drive has been regained... either deleted by FCE or by the drive itself... I don't know which. The weird thing is, that the folders containing the sound, and still photos that i put together are still fine, both on the Lacie drive AND in FCE. You'd think if it was a faulty drive that all files would be deleted, or if it was FCE going beserk, that it would kill all bins, not just the video files...
This issue really is difficult because I just don't know which item is at fault and I'm reluctant to try downloading all my data again because I don't know piece of hardware is killing my files... My FCE is not a pirated copy... am using a mac book pro 15" 2 years old w/OS 10.4.11.
Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated!!!
    Thanks very much
    Take care
    Mark

Problem solved - I had deleted all the necessary preference files. I did not reinstall Quicktime, thanks for the suggestions, though. I called Apple Care. A very helpful person on the other end of the phone directed me to trash the preferences (again). No luck. He asked me to create a new user, which I had not done, the problem was still there. The fix was a reinstall of FCE HD. All's good now. Thanks, Apple Care!

  • Aggregate device on the same firewire bus (fireface 800 and Lightbridge

    Hi,
I'm trying to set up a aggregate device with my old RME Fireface 800 (on the firewire 400 bus) and this new M-Audio Lightbridge. But allthough I manage to create the device, there is no sound at all. The Fireface acts as digital master via a word clock cable. The Fireface are connected via a 10 m. cable to the rear connection (on my nes Mac Pro) and the Lightbridge are connected to the front. I know it's the same bus using those two connectors, so do you think a separate firewire board would be a solution?
    Regards Stig

So the firewire "bus" and a firewire "interface" are the same thing then? Excuse my ignorance, I've just been put in the position that I needed to know this for the first time with this audio interface problem. The things I used my firewire ports for just worked without me having to learn much about it up until now. Also, I found some posts that the card had some issues functioning in a version of Leopard. I'm about to upgrade from Tiger (finally) directly to Snow Leopard. Do you (or anyone else who sees this) happen to know if there are any issues there? I appreciate the help very much Rod.

  • G5 w/New VeloRaptor  and WD 1TB drives shut down after 5 min. of inactivity

We partitioned the VelociRaptor and got it up and running yesterday. Loaded all the programs into it and installed a new WD terabyte scratch disk that holds documents. By yesterday afternoon the computer wowed up with its extremely fast performance.
This morning I booted up all the computers in the office prior to staff arrival. The designer found her G5 with blank screens and fans racing. We (hard) shut it down waited a bit and it rebooted instantly after startup. She went to work and the computer operated perfectly. A phone call interrupted her work, and while she was talking the screens went black and the fans started racing.
We (hard) shut down again, waited and started it. I reset the PRAM. Everything back to normal. Again during a period of inactivity the screens blackened and the fans raced.
How do we reset the NRAM?

As to why... or what is going on...
I always run Disk Warrior after cloning a drive just to be sure, and repair permissions one last time. Even reinstall combo update, whatever last you use (10.4.11, 10.5.5, etc)
Of and my themselves can't think why it is mis-behaving other than nvram / pmu. There are people with Quad G5s and 2.7DP PCI-X with 1-5 installed now.

  • I want to have an SSD (Solid State Drive) as the primary drive and a 1TB drive for storage.

Which HP laptops support this kind of 2 drive configuration?

All the computers with more than one drive bay. What kind of computer do you have? Is it a laptop or desktop? My Pavilion DV7 1285dx laptop has two drive bays and I'm running a Corsair 128gb SSD as the primary drive and the laptop's spinner drive as the backup. It works great.

  • Quadra 800 and internal SCSI drive

Could somebody advise me whether I can replace the second internal SCSI drive in Quadra 800 (MacOS 7.5) with something bigger and newer? I have a new Seagate Cheetah 73Gb internal SCSI drive (68-pin). Is there any way to use it in the Quadra? Is there any adapter that could be used for that?

    Yes, but.
The largest Volume supported on that Mac, provided you are running 7.5 or later, is 4 GB. So you would have to create about 19 partitions (Volumes) to use all the 73 GB. The full story is in this article about Standard Format -- Extended Format requires OS 8.1 or later:
8647- Macintosh: \[Standard] File System Specifications and Terms
    Volume
A volume is either a full disk, or a section of a disk, partitioned into separate parts. If you partition a single drive then each partition is considered a volume.
The maximum volume size under System 6 and System 7 is 2 GB. System 7.5 increased that limit to 4 GB and System 7.5.2 (and later) increases that limit to 2 TB on some computers, including:
    - any computer that came with System 7.5.2 or newer. \[your Quadra 800came with 7.1 and an enabler]
    - any Macintosh computer with PCI slots.
That 68-pin drive likely could use wide transfers and much higher speeds, but can be made backward compatible through careful use of adapters. Alternatiively, you could install a NuBus card to connect to it directly.

  • After 5 R's and Ipod reset utility, what next?

Nothing has worked so far to make my 1-gen iPod operable. (It has worked fine in the past.) I get a blinking orange light when it is plugged in to a usb port.
It shows up in System Profiler but not in ITunes or on my desktop.
The iPod Reset Utility either crashes when I run it or tells me I have "two iPods" attached to my computer, and that I should remove one. I do not have two iPods attached to my computer.
    Thoughts on next steps?

There are several different things to consider here:
    a) Disk Utility will only see your iPS when and if it's present as a mounted volume. Yours isn't mounting, it won't be seen. The fact that it's seen in the Profiles really doesn't mean anything at all.
    b) Disk Repair won't really do anything at all to a Shuffle.
    c) Re-formatting should NOT be done in your case. The only case when it's ever called for is a few cases where Windoze users have inadvisedly followed their own OS prompts to 'help out' by formatting this new drive that's suddenly popped up on their system. Even in those cases the Reset Utility will do the same thing and, beyond that, we're back to (a) above: If your iPS can be seen by Finder and Disk Utility then it can also be seen by the Reset Utility.
    d) You need to get to the stage where you can reliably open and use the iPod Shuffle Reset Utility. You might have to d/l a fresh copy of it, you might have to Repair Permissions, you might only have to log out to a Restart. What you DO have to do is to get it so that it will open and run.
    e) Once you do that, you have to make sure that you're exactly, exactly, following the instructions for its use. Severe cases absolutely require that it be run from a clean, fresh system start with nothing else at all going on, that it be given enough time to work, and that more than one run might be required.

  • Firewire 800 and Iomega 2Tb External Drive

I started using an Iomega 2Tb as Time Machine just over one year ago.
Initially it connected to my iMac 27" and worked perfectly with a Firewire 800 cable.
After a couple of months it suddenly stopped working and was not recognised in Finder or Disc Utility.  I contacted Iomega and they suggested I try a new cable.  I did and it did not make any difference.  I have no other Firewire devices to test if the problem is with the Iomega or my iMac.
I switched to USB and that worked perfectly for a while.  I have subsequently had problems with the Iomega "unmounting" itself, with a Journal Error comment when I run Verify in Disc Utility.
I have reformatted and remounted the Iomega twice but it has unmounted itself again.
I rotate three external drives as Time Machine back ups.  The other drives are USB Freecom and Seagate 1Tb drives.  They continue to work perfectly.
Because the Iomega has also given problems when connected by USB, I suspect it is the cause of the problem.
I would hope that we have reached the stage in home computing when we can buy a device, plug it in and it works, without having to waste time problem solving.
Can any one suggest anything else I can check?

Thanks Nick.  The Iomega is the only external drive with which I have experienced any problems so I guess I wasted my money and will need to try another brand.

  • Problem installing RME Fireface 800 drivers iMac OS X 10.8.5

    Hi,
The drivers for the RME Fireface 800 audio interface will not install on my iMac.
    iMac 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB Ram, OS X 10.8.5
(I have also borrowed a Fireface 800, which works, from a friend so it does not seem to be a problem with my audio interface).
I downloaded the latest drivers from the RME website and the installation proceedure appears to go smoothly but the drivers are not installed (and no sign of the two programs that usually install; the mixer application and the application for choosing the inputs/outputs etc..)
The Fireface 800 and iMac were both working happily together using OS X 10.5 but the iMac hard drive had to be replaced and the operating system has been upgraded to OS X 10.8.5.
I am trying Onyx to see if it clears this up.
    Please help me. Thank you.
    Ben

    Hi,
Onyx is asking:  Where is System Events.app
Does anyone know how I should action this or if this could be linked to the issue with installing drivers and if so what I should do?
    Thanks
    Ben

  • Bootcamp, SSD bootdrive and a 2nd Drive

I have a new iMac with a 256 Solid State drive and another 1TB drive. Obviously I boot from the SSD, where I also put all my applications, and keep all my media (photos, movies, documents, etc) on the 1TB drive.
I want to install Windows 7 for gaming and initially considered creating a 40GB partition on the SSD drive just to run the windows OS and create another partition on the 1TB drive to run all my Windows apps  (probably about 250-300GB).
I've read on these forums that Windows 7/Bootcamp doesn't need to be installed on my OSX boot drive and I could essentially put the entire partition (Windows 7 + all Windows apps) on my 1 TB drive.
Naturally I'd like to have the boot speed of the SSD for Windows 7, but I feel like I might be complicating the entire process by creating a seperate Window's partition on both of my drives.
Can anybody confirm whether both of these options are in fact possible and recommend which direction I should go?
    Thank you.

Windows doesn't like to see other drives with GPT than the one it is being installed on.
If you use the SSD, can unplug the 1TB or wipe it free after backup, and then restore.
So using the SSD for both, no trouble, then see if the 1TB as is you get into Windows Install, just after you select where the target partition, and see if there is an error message.
But always be ready with backups for good sake.
SSD needs room for garbage, writes so you don't keep reusing the same cells during a month.
256GB means you may get 115GB for each, maybe give Windows more than half....
