MPB temperature questions...

just 2 quick questions. Ive searched the forums a bit, and while Ive found hints, i cant quite answer my own question.
First, my macbook pro 2.6ghz (Merom proc) can run as hot as 165-170 degrees Fahrenheit while surfing the web/streaming videos. This seems a bit hot to me... I realize these computers tend to run pretty warm, and as i slow down net usage and the computer idles more, the temp drops as low as 120 F, but usually hovers (with casual use) between 140-150 F. I've heard of some macbook pros running much MUCH cooler, as low as 100 F. These might be older models though, with considerably slower processors.
Second, how does apple handle heat-related issues? Ive heard of people replacing the thermal paste (I'm VERY reluctant to do this myself)... is this the sort of thing apple maintenance would do? Or will they just send me on my way and tell me its normal.
I don't use my laptop ON my lap ever, but i worry about the machine overheating, and the kind of damage this can do to the processor or the internal circuitry... at what temp should i REALLY begin to worry that my processor is pushing it too far...
Thanks
Chris

Actually, the older MacBook Pros ran hotter - which was when people got really exercised about replacing thermal paste and the like. My first MacBook Pro, which was the first generation ran substantially hotter than my current beast. The first generation was Core Duo rather than Core 2 Duo - hence the temperature problems. When they made the transition to Core 2 Duo the angst about temperatures kind of died down.
As for MacBook Pros running at 100F - I'd be amazed. Desktop processors might, but that is not the way these things are designed to work. Maybe that reading is an external case reading rather than a core reading. But marginally above room temperature would be remarkable for a laptop processor. With the first generation people were happy to get their core temperatures down to 60C ~ 140F. I'd consider that bog standard for my current MBP - a 2.4GHz Santa Rosa (forget what name people give to the processor because I don't care about Meroms, Penryns, Flagelates, Bornswindles or Fliggelhoofers - just that it works.) When you tax the processor it should jump to about 80C ~ 175F. Some websites can do that because they need all those ads to run smooth animation endlessly.
You should worry if you burn yourself or the computer doesn't function properly - otherwise trust that Apple hires thermal engineers that are competent at their jobs and forget about it.

  • Dv7 turbo boost and temperature question

I have the core i7 2630QM @ 2.0 ghz with turbo boost up to 2.9 ghz.  My question is, even while running prime95 (all 8 threads at 100% usage), cpu-z says the processor only gets up to 2.6 ghz.  Now its not really a big deal because even at that speed almost nothing can max it out, im just curious why its not getting all the way up there.
And now its time to discuss temperature...even after just 15 mins of prime95, all 4 cores of my cpu were up to 80 degrees celcius and the motherboard sensor said 82...that's rather high isnt it? While im gaming all temps hover at around 70 or 75 degrees...is that near the danger zone? I appreciate any answers! thanks

    krrmit
I don't think there is any way to turn these off. The processor will use hyperthreading and powerboost automatically depending on the load on the CPU and whether it needs hyperthreading and powerboost. Powerboost is used for heavy graphics if I'm not mistaken.

  • MBP i7 istat temperature question

    My very first post!
anyways, quick question....i recently installed istat on my mbp and the temperature section lists 2 memory controllers, one is at ~36 C at the other at ~94 C. Why are there two memory controllers and why is there such a big temperature difference?? this is under light workload btw

reinstalled istat and now only showing one "memory controller" at "normal" temp.
perhaps the high temp. at ~94c caused the istat to freeze.
anyone else ever have this problem?

  • IMac (early 2009), 3.06 GHz, ATI 4850 - fan speed and temperature questions

Well, so I downloaded and installed Temperature Monitor and iMac Fan Control - mainly for observational purposes and not for toying around with the fan speeds and I've got some questions. Mind you, I haven't tampered at all with the fan speed settings, just installed Fan Control. Here are my readings (while browsing the internet with Safari and doing a chat via iChat):
    Fan Speeds:
CPU fan (desired) 1300 RPM / (current) 1530 RPM
HD fan (desired) 2100 RPM / (current) 2099 RPM
    DVD fan (desired) 1300 / 1298 RPM
    Temperatures:
    CPU Heatsink: 92°F
    Internal HD: 108°F
    Internal DVD: 95°F
    GPU Heatsink: 107°F
Are these, under the circumstances, normal readings?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Your welcome and no problem. I would say only the Apple engineers can tell you why the fans are set to those speeds however my best guess is the obvious they found those speeds the closest to keeping the temps at an optimum operating temperature. I found when I'm doing graphics intensive work my machine heats up but quickly cools down when I'm done.

  • Neo2 Platinum Temperature questions

    hi,
2 questions i have to ask..
its useful to have them answered by somebody who knows somehting about a program called motherboard monitor...
question subject 1: Motherboard monitor shows 3 Temperature sensors. what are the correct settings for the sensors?
does anyone know of where there is a diagram of the locations of these sensors are situated on the board?
question subject 2: is 46-51'c (room temp 27'c)  a good tempterature for a 3500+ A64 to be running at?
and if anyone else has an Akasa EVO 22 on their 3500+ a64 what are your temperatures? (please include room temperature, and typical RPM of fan)

I think I've some problems with temperature monitoring on my MoBo. For example, when I had ASUS A8V, my СPU (3000+) was running @2385MHz (1,6V) and max temperature with box cooler was 61'C (load). Now I've changed MoBo to MSI K8N Neo2, CPU is @2205MHz (1,52V) and its temperature with the same cooler is about 70'C  ...
From what I understand different boards have their temp probes in slightly different locations, which will affect indicated temps.
I've also heard that the Neo2 reports temps 3-4C higher than actual (I'm not real sure about that though, if anybody has that scoop - lemme know).
Regardless, your temps are way high & I'd look into a more robust H/S than the boxed cooler. 70C is within meltdown range, 60C is toasty - 50's under load would be preferable.

  • Ge70 2PE-689XES Temperature Question

    hello!
I bought a week ago the Ge70 2PE apache pro , and i was playing games at my house . But I am kinda worried about the temperature of the laptop!
When i am playing Warframe on ultra , it goest till 85 degrees.
Same happen with Tera on medium settings and 1600x900p
When I am playing League Of Legends or Heroes of the Storm the temperature of the CPU is around 75 degrees.
    So: My question is:
Are those temperatures normal? I read in some other posts (with similar laptops models ) that the temperature is around 65-70 degrees... .
I am worried. Help! I am from Almeria , Spain. We are around 30ºC . I think the laptop is so hot because that. Could be?
I am sorry for my English. I am not English native! Dont be rude please

Just don't directly blow the vent, otherwise it will cause the resistance of the heat air flow.
    Like the following scenario:
Fan air --> <-- Heat air direction from the vent
This will cause resistance, but if you blow the hot air from the side, it's helpful to take away the heat.
    Fan air

<----Heat air direction from the vent

Help to blow away the heat
    Sorry for poor drawing...
Thanks you a lot for the advices I will put the fan right now in the correct position! xD

  • IMac operating temperature question

Hi. I am thinking of getting a new iMac.
I see on the iMac technical specifications webpage :
    http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html#specs
...that the iMac is required to be in a 50 degree Farenheit or warmer environment. "Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C)"
So what if the temperature goes down to 35 degrees Farenheit in a low heat overnight situation? Is this a real cause for concern?
    Thanks.
    Thomas

The Dell XPS One has these specs:
    "Temperature:
    Operating 10° to 35°C (50° to 95°F)
    Storage –40° to 65°C (–40° to 149°F)
Relative humidity 20% to 80% (noncondensing)"
(I had to download the "Dell™ XPS One™ Owner’s Manual" to find them. Annoying.)
The important word is "noncondensing". If your machine gets cold and the water vapor inside it condenses, then you have liquid water covering certain parts. This is never good.

  • Temperature Question

This has puzzled me for a couple of years, hesitant to ask because it might be borderline ridiculous but since it is the same story in CS6 and new Bridge/Camera Raw, I just have to ask. Every thing I have seen (books, tutorials, videos) shows the temperature (under Basic and just beneath White Temperature) as a 4 digit number. Mine is just -100 to 100. No 4 digits. I am not so silly that I don't understand that I get a full range of temperatures available (it is all relative. I get that). But it is making me crazy that everyone else on the planet appears to have 4 digits and I don't. Does anyone know why this is so for me? Not quite up there with how they get the caramel in the Caramilk Bar but truly an itch I am dying to scratch.

The behavior you are describing is what happens when you open JPEG images in ACR. To get the full range of temperature values you have to be working on raw images.

  • G550 with geforce g150m gpu core temperature question

my gpu core goes 77 when not using any games ... and goes high as 103 c approximately... should i be worried ? i mean it still work normal.  using riva tuner to see core temp....
    nfo file of laptop
where should i clean if necessary

the temperature should be about 39c* while idle
it looks like you are having "cooling" issue.
have you tried to clean fan?

Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.
    3. Do you have plenty of free space on your hard drive - at least 15-20 GBs?

  • Airport Express temperature question

I am wondering what the highest operating temperature can be for the airport express?  I have a situation where the temperature will get to 120 degrees and although the tech specs stipulate 95 degrees there is usually an engineering factor/range that will accomodate for some degree of variation.  I would like to ensure that is operates reliably for the short and long term under the higher temperature.

Maybe there is a range, but I do believe the technical specs stipulate the "maximum" safe operating temperature. That nominal temperature is 95º F. Storage temperature can be as high as 140º F.
If you operate it at 120º F you must assume the risk that it will fail earlier than its expected life. And, most likely any damage during the warranty period would not be covered because it was operated outside of its stated maximum operating temperature.

  • Sorry- yet another temperature question

I've read through many, many posts on the ol' temperature issue but couldn't find an answer. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
20" iSight, 1 gb ram. For the 1st year and 2 months the CPU temp was consistently between 110-120F and the HD temp hovered around 105F. A couple months ago it started running much higher-- CPU around 170, HD around 125 (according to Temperature Monitor and xResourceGraph).
Nothing's changed-- same room, same ambient temps, same (not intensive) application usage. I understand that these temps still fall in the normal range, but why the sudden jump?
Perhaps things are just not running as efficiently as before, but I just thought I'd ask in case there's something that I could do (cleaning the fans?) or should have checked.
    Thanks very much!

Wow- it worked! Thank you so much for the suggestions. I was surprised to see the amount of dust that came out of the round vent in back. Then I reset the SMU (thanks for the link, MGW) and now I'm running around 110F CPU and 100F HD.
I wish I could have clicked "Solved" for both of you, but I guess you can only do it once.
    Much appreciated!

  • Heat/Temperature Question

I have a 2.16ghz MBP with 2 Gig memory. My baseline CPU temps are generally around 60C when using Safari. With heavy load, temp rises to 75-80C max.
I have the following questions: Does the 2.16 ghz MBP tend to run hotter ?? Would anyone even consider requesting a LB upgrade (don't have the whine) in view of some claiming a much cooler MBP after a LB upgrade (some claim temps of 40C when idle)??
    Thanks for any feedback.

This is old stuff. It's been beaten to death in the forums, which you'd know if you only took the time to do a search.
You won't get your motherboard replaced just because it runs hot. They all run hot. If you want yours to be cool turn it off.

  • Overclock temperature question with amd cpu

hi, I have a amd opteron 165 dual core, and I overclock  it to 2700 mhz,

66C is too high to me, yes, think its danger. its expected to be hot due high quantity of transistors compared to the other one, but 66C is in danger zone.
what vcore you use on it?
hi, my vcore, (ewverest ultimate edition) is 1.43 - 1.47 (on bios I put 1.48)
Quote from: Frankenputer on 31-January-07, 21:27:39
That does seem a tad too close to the danger zone. Is this the standard AMD HSF?  Check the case cooling. Do you have good airflow? Do you have fans that move enough air? Check the fins and fan for the HS for dust.  Neaten up the cabling and ensure you have good airflow inside and outside of the case.
You could try to clean the HS and IHS with some 90%+ alcohol, put on some quality paste, like ArticSilver5, and reseat the HS.  A better after-market HS would be a better solution than using the standard HS, especially for OC'g.
yes I have a good airflow, but...  I don´t use a quality paste... I use normal one... I tried this, and post them later
thanks guys!! and sorry my  bad english
pd: what´s means HSF?? HS and IHS???

On the thermal spec of the P4s the maxmum temp is over 100C but the on die would be 75C.  An interesting note is that when used with stock cooler supplied in the retail kit and running unOC\'ed the temperature reaches 55C at idle and 63C at load.
I have replaced my cooler with a Thermalright SLK900u and  OC\'ed to 3.2Ghz and I see a difference of 20C in cooling.  This is a huge considering I am running cooler than a stock cooler even at OC\'ed rates.
I use MBM 5 for my temperature monitoring now the only thing that concerns me is the thermal sensor\\\'s error factor and by most degrees should be about +/- 2%.  If anyone knows that actual value let me know.
Also MBM has detected a 3 third fan sensor but, I don\\\'t know where it is as it registers 0 for now and would like to hook it up.

Isn't thermalright a little noisy if you're using the 4800 rpm delta fan that ships stock with it?..
Personally,i'm using an ALPHA 8942 heatsink with a regular 2800 rpm antec case fan,(with RPM monitoring)and match your temps without even being able to hear the fan with the case closed, and it's a good 30*C outside(sweating bullets here because of the high humidity right now).... :D
