MPEG-2.5 won't play

I can't believe no one has mentioned this problem here before!
I have a ton of preexisting songs in my library encoded with the .mp3 wrapper, but as MPEG-2.5 files. Some of these play in iTunes, some do not. They all work fine in Winamp, which is why I've never noticed a problem in the past. However, NONE of the aforementioned files play on my iPod Classic! I've tested this on firmware versions 1.0.1, 1.1.1, and 1.1.2--same issue with all.
These songs worked on my old 15GB 3g iPod, which seemed really weird to me.
Am I stuck with no other option but to reencode these? Is there some way I can "trick" the iPod into thinking they're MPEG-1.0 Layer III instead of MPEG-2.5?
Thanks in advance!
Zach

Well, I found a solution. In case anyone comes across the same issue (which, considering no one apparently has in the past, is unlikely), here's what I did:
Load the offending files into foobar2000.
Right click track(s)
Utils -> Rebuild MP3 Stream
Voila.

  • Mpeg - 4 videos won't play on ipod classic

I have several movies I've created in mpeg-4 and they won't copy to my iPod classic because it says the format isn't supported. Guess I don't understand since they are supposed to play on an iPod classic.

try to make sure that the bitrate and resolution is suitable for playing on iPod.
the general limits which the iPod carry.
    H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
    MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
Try to lower the bitrate and resolution, maybe this will help.
if this still doesn't work, try another video to iPod video converter instead.

  • Windows Vista User upgraded to iTunes 7.7 and now MPEG-4 videos won't play

I'm a windows vista user, and I just updated to iTunes 7.7 with Quicktime.
Prior to the update all my videos & related codecs files worked just fine(e.g., MPEG-4 and H.264 codecs).
However, since the Quicktime & iTunes 7.7 update, now only videos coded as H.264 will play correctly and MPEG-4 video files only have sound but no video picture.
Any suggested on how to fix this issue is greatly appreciated.

  • IPod won't play mp3 files

Recently had to reset my iPod & reload iTunes incl my whole library. Now all of the mpeg song files won't play on my 80g iPod. They will xfer but won't play. B4 the reset all of my files played. I would convert them to AAC but i have over 11k songs-- i shouldn't have to as the player supports these files. It has played them all before.
The imports setting on iTunes is already set to convert to AAC but it never physically does it. It has never mattered before.
What settings, resets, changes can I make.

  • Mpeg-2 won't play

I've got tons of old home videos that I transferred from camcorder to Mac when I had my old Mac mini. I've got a new iMac and the videos won't play. They're mpeg-2 format and when I double-click one to watch, it says there's a missing codec. I spent $20 on quicktimempeg2.dmg but it own't let me install it on the hard drive, saying it's for an older version of Quicktime.
What do I do?? I can't lose these videos.

Actually, what it probably says is "This software is intended for an earlier verson of Mac OS X."

The QT 10.1 Player has built-in support of "muxed" MPEG-2 file, including those with AC3 audio but is more touchy regarding file extensions. For instance, it won't play "muxed" MPEG-2/AC3 content with an MOV or VOB extension. Moreover, this support is limited to the QT 10.1 player, so if you want to play the files in the QT 7 Player or MPEG Streamclip you will have to install the purchased QT MPEG Playback component.
What do I do?? I can't lose these videos.
Since you already purchased the QT MPEG Playback component, my recommendation would be to install it in order to maximize various playback options. Basically, you have three options here:
    1) You can install the component on an older system and then transfer the codec to your Lion system.
    2) You can download the MPEG Streamclip "Beta" package which includes a utility that will open/install the component directly on a Lion system.
    3) You can use an app like Pacifist to extract/install the component directly to the Lion system.

  • Won't play my mpeg files

I have two mpeg files exactly the same as my others except that they for some reason won't play in quicktime. They work in w.m.p and are in a format that quicktime recognizes so does anyone know why they won't play. One of says 'quicktime does not recognze this format' and the other says 'cannot open because of bad file name'. They both should work. Is there anything I can do?

QT seems to insist that mpeg files conform exactly to the mpeg standards. Assuming that they are both mpeg-1 files they should play and if they do not there is nothing much you can do to correct them. QT does not play mpeg-2 files without the purchase of the Apple mpeg2playback component. I mention this because sometimes mpeg-2 files are named with a mpg extension but not otherwise identified as mpeg-2. One last matter is that the mpeg2 playback component only plays program streams, not transport streams.

  • Audio won't play on MPEG files from camera?

I'm having issues with my new video camera. I want to use my final cut express to edit the videos, but the audio on the video files won't play. The videos play just fine, just no sound. I've turned the volume all the way up on my mac, but still nothing.
Any suggestions to make the audio work?
(I'm not the most familiar with computers, so simple/specific instructions would be best)

You have to separate out the audio and video tracks (referred to as "demuxing") of an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 file before you import it into FCE. Try MPEG StreamClip to convert the MPEG files into an editing format (DV Stream, for instance). If your camera outputs MPEG-2, you'll also need the MPEG-2 Playback Component.
    Hope this helps.

  • MacBook Pro won't play .mov or .wmv files.

Since "upgrading" to Lion my MacBook Pro won't play .mov or .wmv files, all I get is a black screen and the audio.  It's so frustrating!!
I've read many other posts all along the same lines and wherever possible I've tried to follow the advice which has been given but nothing works.    I've updated all the drivers I can and I've even reinstalled Lion, nothing makes a difference.
I'm not really looking for any more advice, all I want is someone from Apple to read these posts, realise there is problem and get working on a fix or update.
I had no problems when running Snow Leopard and it would seem, looking at everyone else's problems, that the common issue is Lion.   Seriously, this is one area where Lion is a backwards step.   It should just work (like most things from Apple), but it doesn't.
Personally I believe there is a problem with Lion but from what I've found out from speaking to friends with other Apple kit, this might be a random issue only affecting some people as some have said they've had no problems while others have had the same issues as me.    One guy reinstalled Lion and it resolved the issue for him, I've not been as lucky.
As I say, I'm not really looking for more advice, simply some sort of update from Apple to fix it.   PLEASE!!!

This is a peer-to-peer user forum. Perhaps you would see more action if you and others would file a formal "Bug" report with Apple QuickTime technical people rather than repeatedly reporting a possible problematic problem which may or may not affect others on a random basis. QUICKTIME PRODUCT FEEDBACK
Since you aren't seeking further advice here is what I have observed. Not being a regular WMV file user, I had to create my own sample file to test—a WMV 9 file containing WMV3 compressed video and WMA2 compressed audio. Since I normally use QT 7 as my primary media player, I also stored the WMV data in its partially decompressed form in an MOV file container to avoid pre-playback delays in "classic" player routines and also provide a secondary playback test of MOV wrapped content. These files play as follows using the Flip4Mac component/player support and uncoded URL uploads:
QT 7.6.6 "Open File" - both files play correctly.
QT 7.6.6 "Open URL" - both files play correctly.
QT X.1 "Open File" - WMV file plays correctly. MOV file plays video without audio.
QT X.1 "Open Location" - WMV file appears to open but plays with "black" screen and no audio. MOV file plays video without audio.
VLC "Open File" - WMV plays correctly. MOV file doesn't open,
VLC "Open URL" - WMV file plays correctly. MOV file appears to open but nothing plays.
MPEG Streamclip "Open File" - both files play correctly.
MPEG Streamclip "Open URL" - both files play correctly.
GarageBand - WMV file will not import but MOV file does.
iTunes - WMV file will not import. MOV file container is accepted but as soon as iTuness sees the compression formats, it aborts import.
Safari - WMV file URL auto-downloads and playes in the QT X.1 Player. The MOV file URL opens and plays in Safari.
As you can see from these results the files do play but are subject to many different constrints based on old/new video technology support, independent QT subsets and/or container trapping constraints. In short, individual user results will depend on presence/absence of component support, actual compression formats, file container, application being used, and how the application is being used. Unfortunately, most users here can't or won't provide the prerequisite information or a sample file for independent examination. This makes it next to impossible to give advice in these matters or categorize the specific nature of the problem.

  • Some Songs Won't Play on the iPod

    I have a bizarre problem.
All of my songs that are on my iPod are in iTunes (How else would they get on my iPod xP) and they all work fine. In general, the songs on my iPod work/play fine, minus a few.
When I go to play them, the load up, I see everything that should be there (album cover, band name, song name etc.) but the song doesn't play. What does happen though, is that the iPod rapidly goes through the album, going song to song, without playing any of them, as if I were pressing the skip song button. (which I am not pressing)
Then it slows down and stays on one song, staying at the 0:00 mark, even though the play arrow at the top is there. If I press pause and then play again, the arrow icon changes, but the song still won't play.
Now if I go to any other song by any other band the iPod won't play that song. If I press the center button, and move what part of the song it is at, it skips to the next song, and it doesn't matter how far into the song I put it. It's like the screen shows there is 4:24(or any time, this is just an example) of a song but the iPod thinks there is 0:00.
A simple restart of the iPod sets everything back to normal, I can listen to my other music without a problem, but the same thing happens when I select any of those songs.
At first I thought they were just broken files on the iPod, or even from the CD which I uploaded to iTunes. So I just ignored it, and didn't play those songs. But then I got more music yesterday and put it on my iPod, and the same thing happens to the entire album. So I decide to go open iTunes, and see what would happen if I tried to play the files on the computer. In the iTunes library, they worked fine. I go to where my iPod is listed, and play it from there it also works fine. So it's only on the iPod.
Is it the format or the bit rate of the file? I don't think this is the problem, but maybe it is, so here's the info on the files.
    Kind: MPEG audio file
    Bit Rate: 320 kbps
    Format: MEG-1, Layer 3
    Encoded: LAME3.93
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

i have this exact problem on my 120 classic. it started earlier today on a few song i had downlaoded from the iTunes store. i thought it was an accessability issue since i had just updated to the latest iTunes, but it started happening on my songs from CDs, and then what you described happened on every single song i played on shuffle (out of about 10,000 songs total)
i got home and plugged it into to itunes only to find it told me to restore it. so i did. then it looked as if it was fixed (the bar at the bottom showed everything on it)
then i unplugged it, and it said no songs, yet there was 50gb of info on it.
i checked under settings and it said it was all 'other'. then i plugged it in again and restored it again and the same thing happened, 50gb of other.
iTunes works perfectly still. im not sure what the problem is, and ill probably go to the nearest iTunes store this weekend and ill tell you how it goes if theres a way to fix it.

  • DVD videos won't play, although audio works?

since upgrading to 10.8.4, DVD videos, including rental movies, discussions from teaching sessions, and conversions from home movies won't play, although sound is audible. Video player is "App version 5500.38.2; Framework version 5.7.1. I have rarely used DVDs on the machinge, but did work fine in past. Any suggestions appreciated

What comes to mind is that the DVD player will only work with certain original Apple manufactured DVD drives.  (Licensing issue since Apple pays a license fee for the MPEG software on the DVD drive.)  Are you using the original built-in drive?  VLC doesn't care about the license but states that it is up to the user to insure proper licensing.  Look in About This Mac to see what information it has about the DVD drive.  Perhaps it is somehow sending the wrong information.
Can you view MPEG movies on the Apple site.  For example the movie trailers.

  • Encore DVD Writing Cancels won't play on DVD player issue

So I have a very confusing issue with encore.
When I press build everything works fine. Then writing begins. The moment the writing reaches the end of the progress bar (the exact moment)  the progress bar goes to empty and the bottom bar says canceling and ejects the DVD. Usually (not every time) a pop up menu saying "end of file" appears next. When I press ok for end of file message the pop up disappears and suddenly the DVD progress bar is filled and the DVD says completed (as if nothing just happened). So I'm confused whether it worked or not!
I reinsert the DVD that just ejected into my Mac and it works! Then I put it into a DVD player and it won't play, it won't play on my old Xbox 360 either, but it WILL play in a Bluray player?!
Everytime I rewrite the files I get different results. They all work on my Mac and blu ray but only 1 of 4 works in the Xbox. The one that does work in the Xbox will read in the DVD player but plays choppy and  skips  around as if the DVD is scratched or damaged?
! Other differences involve the write speed, sometimes the options are 8x or 4x. Other times its 3x,2x, and 1x. When the latter write speed options occur I cannot press "test before writing" it's greyed out. When 8x and 4x are the speed options I can check it.  I used different DVDs and it didn't help.
I work for a company that needs to copy the DVDs but they can't be copied. Don't know why?
    Here are my settings

I really need help with this weird issue quickly thanks.

Just an Update, I've tried many things to no avail still have a few others to try. Being a Large file it takes a while to try things.
I went ahead and got Toast, but considering that the Image Iso and the DVD Folder both gave me the End of File Error and the Disc "Failed Completed" Error I figured it a no go and it was. It did however give me something that Opened everywhere (Mac,Xbox,Dvd) , but it did not play on the Dvd correctly.
I've done numerous things in the Mac permissions end Like trying as a different user and running as the Root User, but it was also unsuccessful.
I've Re- Exported the file many different ways, but finally had a breakthrough using a version of M2v.  It's definitely an error with Finalizing. My disc previously began to mess up and give "END of File" after it finished writing, it never even made it to the "Writing Lead Out" stage. I beleive this is why it plays it certain places fine, but probably not as well in systems (like Dvd players) that require those last few steps like writing Lead Out.
The only issue I have now is that when I put it into the DVD player it say "No title"!?!? AY CARAMBA!!!
Now I'm working on trying to figure this NEW problem! I have all my menus and links in place, but no go. I think it may be related to the previous problem in that something beneath the surface is wrong with my computer. Being a used Mac with a restored Hard Drive there are probably endless possibilities, but I hesitate to think that way because it may also have absolutely nothing to do with it.
So any help is greatly appreciated
whether it be a specific issue you know of dealing with used Macs and issue similar to mine
or just on the "NO Title" error as a separate issue. I'm hoping this "No Title" is something simple and unrelated,  I've already burned through about 13 discs and even more pain pills for the headaches!!

  • MP4 H.264 video won't play in Flash Player

I am using a Mac Book, OS X 10.8.5; FireFox 32.0.1; Flash Player 16.0.0.305.  I am trying to play video (MP4 H.264 format) that works on VLC, Quicktime Player & Real Player but won't play through Flash Player.  Why?

I'll take a look at the GPL sources to see how the firmware encodes the video output, I think the mpeg encoder might be built into the firmware's Linux kernel (instead of a stand-alone encoder program), I see references to the IBM mpeg2 headers but I'm not sure. But honestly addressing this possible bug is not the first thing on my todo list, but I do fidn this report interesting enough to merit investigation.
May I ask what you are using for the Samba server (aka windows shares)? Do you use your desktop PC, or perhaps a NAS server?
As an interim thing to try, I advice you install VLC media player to view the files, or to use VLC to examine the media files properties to see what you can findout.
IF you must use Windows media player, then I suggest you look into the combine community codex package.

  • .MOV file won't play in QuickTime Player? QT Components?

I have a bunch of .MOV clips on my hard drive that I'd like to ultimately import to Final Cut Express (4.0.1) to edit (my wedding video!!). If I double click on the clip, it automatically opens in QuickTime Player (7.6.9), and I then prompted to a QuickTime Components website. I'm not sure why the .MOV clips won't play, since I believe I have the latest version of QT. What should I do?
Additional information on the .MOVE files: original format is MPEG HD, dimensions: 1280 x 720, Codecs: XDCAM EX 720p30 (35 Mb/s VBR) Integer (Big Endian), Timecode
    Thank you for your help!

Upon further research, I found that a certain QT plug-in is required to use XDCAM EX footage in Final Cut Express, which can be found on this website:
    http://www.calibratedsoftware.com/QXD.asp
I downloaded the demo, but have no idea how to use it to convert my files so FCE will accept it.  Is anyone familiar with this plug-in and what to do once it is downloaded?

  • Downloaded from iTunes, won't play in iDVD

I have some mpeg4 files that I downloaded from the iTunes Library online. I am attempting to use them in an iDVD project, but some of them will not play. Some others will play. The ones that won't play in iDVD will still play in iTunes.
The files that don't work seem to have a little padlock in the upper left corner that I cannot get rid of.
    Any suggestions?

    Hello Curt,
The tracks that won't play in iDVD, were those tracks that you imported from a CD? Or did you purchase and download directly from iTunes?
If you can’t play a song purchased from the iTunes Store, you may have exceeded the number of computers on which you can play your purchases.
Unless the song is an iTunes Plus version, you can play an iTunes Store purchase on up to five authorized computers. After you authorize five computers (by playing purchases on those computers), you can’t play the songs on a sixth computer until you deauthorize one of the five authorized computers. (For instructions on deauthorizing a computer, click the first link below.)
If the song is available as an iTunes Plus download, you may ugrade the song at the iTunes Store.
If you're listening to a shared library or playlist, iTunes skips iTunes Store purchases if your computer hasn't been authorized to play them. To listen to a purchased song in a shared library or playlist, double-click the song. If your computer isn't authorized to play songs purchased by the person who is sharing the song, you'll need to enter that person's Apple or AOL account ID and password to hear the song.
You might be trying to play an AAC file that was not created using iTunes or downloaded from the iTunes Store. Songs you download from the iTunes Store or import into your library using the AAC encoder are encoded using the new MPEG-4 AAC format, and play in iTunes and on your iPod. Other AAC files that you find on the Internet or elsewhere won't play in iTunes.
If you’re trying to play a song on a CD that you burned using iTunes, make sure the equipment on which you're trying to play the CD is appropriate for the disc's format. For example, if you burned a CD-RW disc, you can play it only on your computer and some newer CD players. If you burned an MP3 disc, it should work in your computer and on special MP3 CD players, but not on standard consumer audio CD players. You can't play DVDs burned using iTunes on most consumer DVD players.
