MPEG-2 Encoding Results in Silent DVD

I exported a 23.98fps video from FCP to Compressor and then encoded with the MPEG-2 6.2mbps 2-pass setting under the "DVD: Best Quality 90 Minutes" folder. The DVD I burned from that file in DVD Studio Pro is silent. No audio. What am I doing wrong? What are the exact steps I should be taking to make a DVD of a 23.98fps
video from FCP without encoding it as 29.98fps?

Encoding via Compressor to DVD requires 2 separate encodes, one for video, one for audio. Video, as you may know already is m2v. The recommended audio encode format is Dolby ac3.

  • No Audio? On MPEG-2 encodes for SD DVD

    Help. I'm new to Compressor.
I'm trying to encode an MPEG-2 Elementary Stream for SD DVD production. According to the documentation DVD Studio Pro will only work with the elementary streams but it also states "that no audio is provided in this stream". So how am I supposed to encode to MPEG-2 (supported by DVD Studio Pro) and get my audio to go along with it?
Am I missing something obvious? Here are the details:
Source - 1080i60 HD .Mov file
    Encode - MPEG-2 16x9 elementary stream.
Video comes out fine, just no audio to be found anywhere?
    Thanks.

Correct. When you bring your source file into Compressor you need to create two settings. One setting for your MPEG-2, another for your Dolby Stereo .ac3 file. This will output two separate files, one video and the other audio. You then bring those files into DVD SP for authoring.
However do not use the default Dolby 2.0 setting. Start with that but change the dialog normalization to -31 and the Preprocessing Compression Preset to None.

  • Encore says file is not mpeg - Media Encoder says it is! Help please.

    Hi,
This is all about the "file is not a valid mpeg" error.
I'm using Encore 5 to author a DVD, with elements produced in Premiere 4, After Effects 4 and Soundbooth 5.
Video has gone through Media Encoder 4 and audio through Media Encoder 5.
Video is m2v and audio is ac3. There are not other formats.
Check Project gives no errors on anything.
When it comes to authoring the DVD, 4.67 gb have been used leaving 24MB free disc space.
The first few times I tried to author the DVD, after initially reporting no errors, it then wouldn't burn a disc because it said one of the timelines used audio files of different formats. It didn't, but I put them through Media Encoder again anyway, which seemd to solve that problem, but who knows.
(In the DVD Transcode Status, in the Project window, most ac3 files say Don't Transcode, but the three smallest - less than 1MB - say Transcoded [then Automatic in DVD Transcoding Settings]. Don't know why it does that or if that has anything to do with the authoring problem.)
Anyway, now, every time I click Build, it works for a while but then gives "file is not a valid mpeg" error and stops. Doesn't say which file. ALL the files are mpegII.
It will take me days to re-render all the files. Is there any way to find out which is the problem file - it doesn't do anything useful like tell you - or any reason why it isn't recognizing an m2v file which I can do something about, please?
This is driving me crazy. Any advice will be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

I have never mixed different Bit-Rate materials, on the same Timeline, and especially as I usually do one Timeline for each Video Asset (edited to be a "scene," or Chapter). I cannot tell you.
What happens if you create one Timeline for one Asset, and then another for the remaining one?
    Does that change anything?
I had been thinking that you had an MPEG that was out of the DVD-spec., but that usually results in Encore needing to Transcode again, to bring the file into spec.
Good luck, and I wish that I knew more about mixing Assets with differing Bit-Rates.

  • MPEG 2 encoding

Hi - wondering if anyone has run into this problem.  I have Premiere CS4 and I'm trying to encode MPEG2 files with ac3 audio.  I do have the SurCode plugin for Premiere.  Here's my problem.  My video player the files will ultimately be playing on is capable of playing files with a data rate up to 15mbps.  I have encoded using the MPEG2-DVD preset and everything seems to be fine although I would like the video to be a bit cleaner, its a bit blocky- the DVD preset will only allow up to 10mbps files.  When I try to use the MPEG preset I can't seem to get the audio to play.  I can increase the bit rate of the video which makes it look better, but the audio amp/receiver will not detect the ac3 file.  This happens as soon as I switch from the MPEG2-DVD preset to the MPEG2 preset.  I have tried a number of combinations but nothing seems to work.
    Any thoughts??
    Mike M

Thanks Dan - yes, I'm aware that DVD's are limited to 9.8 mbps.  I'm not making a DVD however.  I'm trying to make an MPEG file which will play on an MPEG player capable of 15mbps.  I'd like to take advantage of that additional bandwidth and increase the picture quality.  As I indicated, the MPEG-DVD preset works fine- but the picture is still a bit blocky.  It just seems that as soon as I go to the MPEG preset the audio disappears.

  • Same MPEG-2 encoder in AME and Squeeze?

Can anyone tell me if the Mainconcept MPEG-2 encoder used in AME CS 5.5 is the same encoder as the MPEG-2 encoder in Squeeze 8?
I'm evaluating Squeeze, more or less, to see if helps produce a better DVD from an HD project.
    Thanks...Ben

Apple doesn't want users to export using the MPEG-2 exporter any longer.
The new video editing suite of apps includes Compressor which is what you should use.
The older method will still work but may require you to re-install DVD Studio Pro.
You may also need to update the MPEG-2 Playback Component. Current version is 6.4.

  • Using PXI-5431and PXI-1411 to test MPEG-2 encoder/decoder

I am looking into a way to test an MPEG-2 encoder/decoder.  I have found the PXI-5431, that can generate a NTSC signal which is what I need and the PXI-1411.  So, I guess my question is: would this be a good set up to use the 5431 to generate a signal and the 1411 to acquire the signal and do some comparisons to the two.  Has anyone done this type of testing?  What type of comparisons could be done to the two video signals to verify signal quality(I know very little about video signals)? Or maybe acquire using the PXI-5122?
    Thanks,
    Brian

    Hi BrianPack,
I have some questions.  Please be much more detailed and specific in your next response.  Try not to use pronouns.  Instead, every time you want to use the word "it" or "card", instead use the proper names, such as the "PXI-5122".
What card are you referring to in your first sentence?
When you say (it) "can be configured to decode and encoded MPEG video", do you mean to say you are attempting to encode analog video?
With all the MPEG encoding and decoding, which cards are you referring to?  Your two cards, or two NI modules?
When you generate into the encoder, are you wanting to generate from the NI 5431?  If this is true, what video standard are you wanting to use?
The Frequency Response, Video Resolution, SNR, and composite signal amplitude measurements should be available with the NI 5122 and MicroLEX VideoMaster.  I'm not sure about the NI 1411 because I only support NI's Modular Instruments, but here are the specification sheets for VideoMaster:
    http://www.microlex.dk/products/video/videomaster-component.pdf
If you want more information on the NI 1411, it would be best to post a message on the IMAQ/Vision forum.  For now, please respond with more specific information and I'll be happy to assist you!

  • Encode Rates For Replicated DVD

We're about to send off a master DVD-R to replicate a DVD.
I've been told, but can't confirm, that I can go sky high on my video encode rates for replicated DVDs.
That's the opposite of what I've read for duplicating DVDs.
Any of those out there confirm that I can go to 8 or 9 mbps for an under 1 hour DVD with Dolby2 audio?
Or should I stay at 7.0 as I've always done.
    thanks

HI David - if going to replication on DLT then you can max out the bit rate if you wish to... however you need to think about whether you need to.
There is a law of diminishing returns here - anything above about 8mbps and I doubt anyone except a well trained 'eye' could see any difference in the quality. All you'll be doing is increasing the file size. Also, it's worth remembering that there are still players which have trouble reading higher rates off a replicated disc (check the DVD FAQ - section 1.41 makes for interesting reading, although not all of these are down to high bit rates, of course).
I tend to encode at various rates with short samples of material and look for the differences. Where I can't see any, I opt for the lower rate. So far this has served me well!
Don't forget that a duplicated disc is using a very different material for the reflective layer and it is far less reflective than a replicated disc. This is largely why you need to keep the duplicated disc bit rate low - players struggle to read the higher bit rates from the less reflective surface and so stutter on playback.
Personally, if you can't see any difference between 7mbps and 9.8mbps I'd advise staying at 7. If there is a difference for your footage then try again with 8mbps, but don't be lulled into a false sense of security over the fact that a replicated disc should be able to have 10.08mbps combined bitrate... the quality of the player is really the issue. Whilst most will, some won't, though all should!

  • What are best Mpeg encoder settings for making DVDs?

In switching from PP1.5 to CS3 the procedure is different for making DVDs and we have to encode mpeg files that later get picked up by Encore DVD build proces. What are the best mpeg encode settings for making the DVDs?
    Thanks,
    Chuck Taylor

    Question:
If you are doing a video that is small enough that you are not worried about size, what is the absolute best quality encoder settings? Would a Continous Bitrate result in a higher quality file generally? VBR is for trying to make a smaller file I assume.
I'm frustrated with even white letters on black titles that have some flicker. I just don't seem to get the smooth quality I desire.
Should I look at a different encoder?
If you output PP3 to an AVI and then import it into encore, isn't there a reduction of Q. due to the save to the AVI file?
    thanks.

  • MPEG-1 Encoding Specs for DVD

Wondering what the best encoding specs are for MPEG/MPEG-1 for a Standard DVD. Thanks.

You still need to verify how your client is going to be using this disk. The problem with MPEG1 is that you're not going to be creating a DVD. You're going to be making a DVD-ROM that contains video.
There really are no "best" settings for MPEG1. The default within Compressor is 240x360. If you need larger, you must duplicate one of the settings, rename it, and then modify it.

  • Will a DVD-5 (HD MPEG-2 Encoded) play on my Blu-ray player?

Is there any way of checking that a 30 minute HD DVD recorded on a normal DVD-5 will play on a Blu-ray before you buy it?
I am thinking of getting a very cheap Philips BDP 3000.
I suppose I could always get the sales staff to agree to let me return it if it didn't work!

In Compressor, HD DVD means just that. It is referring to the obsolete format. Most of us would like to see that removed from the Final Cut suite; it just usually leads to confusion.
In compressor, you can create a new batch from template, select "create blu-ray disc" and it will do just that, with limited but nice looking menus. It will also create an AVCHD disc (Blu-ray structure on a DVD-5 or DVD-9) if you have a DVD-R in the drive.

  • MPEG-2 Encoding.. Gamma and/or Black Level?

    Hello,
I am using MegaPEG.X Pro to encode MPEG-2 from my QT files that have been output from my FCP5 sequence.
The MPEG-2 files from MegaPEG.X look much darker (deeper blacks) than the original DV Movie when viewed side by side in QT. In FCP I used the waveform to set my blacks at 0 with the CC filters. So the DV Movie output from FCP should be correct, shouldn't it? The DV levels look better than what I am seeing in the MPEG-2.
I downloaded the demo of BitVice, and when I export from BitVice (I have Luma Correction checked) the resulting MPEG-2 file is much closer to the original DV Movie.
    Any input would be helpful.
    Thanks,
    Matt

Have you applied any filters, etc to the MegaPEG settings? Which settings did you use?
Have you been over to the digigami web site and had a hunt through the info there? Gen is really helpful and keen to solve all and any problems, it seems... you could always email him directly!

  • Increasing Bitrate for Encode resulting in horrible results

I've been migrating from Final Cut Studio to all the various Adobe alternatives and having an issue with Encore right now.
I've been successfully making DVDs and letting Encore automatically encode for me (As I often times end up making a BluRay as well of a project, this gives me the option of swapping out the footage and keeping the chapter markers intact).  So far it's been working great and calculates things to within 20mb of utilizing all available disc space.
I'm having problems with my most recent project, however.
Initially it was going to be the standard warning video intro and a 1:45 video. Had everything encoded and it looked great (and the show video was 3.9GB).  Then the client decided to add another 10 minute slideshow to things and everything...went downhill.  Original encode still worked and fit on the disc, but in a moment of stupidity I thought it would be good to re-encode so I had everything fresh. And for some odd reason the show's size shrank from 3.9GB to 3.2GB, leaving over 500mb of unused space. It looked OK but I thought it would be good to reclaim the underutilized bitrate. And every effort to do so has resulted in really horrible lacing issue/jagged piano strings and lines footage on the DVD.
Not sure why given that all I've done is increase the Target Bitrate of the standard Transcode setting (NTSC DV 23.97 High Qulality 2 pass 4mb) from 4 to 5 mbps and the Pixel Aspect Ratio from Standard 4:3 to Widescreen 16:9 (thus increasing the Estimated File Size from 3212 to 3900)
The source clip is 720X480 (1.2121) 29.97fps, progressive
I've kept Field Order at "Automatic" (so think I'll try changing it to None (Progressive) in case it wasn't really doing it automatically).
Is there anything else? It's a pretty static concert one camera shot
    Thanks for any help
    Jonathan

That's what I'm afraid of   I was hoping I was going to hear something like "the algorithn for bitrate doesn't like 5, try 4.8" or something like that..
I re-encoded as I noticed the default for Encore was 23.97 and as my footage is 29.97 (and output usually is 29.97 for DVD isn't it?) I wanted to see if it made a difference. And the answer is no...
Here is the preset I used:
Here is what came out (screen shot from playing via VLC):
And as a frame of reference, here's how it looks when I just let Encore do it's thing automatically:
I will try creating a new project and importing all the footage as fresh timelines, plus the main menu to access things, to see how an automatic encode changes via that workaround. Seems like an odd...bug? Lack of feature? not to be able to add things after one reaches a certain point in a project and having to start over from scratch (especially since I do a lot of tweaking of the menus by sending things back to Photoshop to get layout, highlights, etc just right and it's one of the features I love about Encore vs DVD Studio Pro or any other option I've looked at)

  • MPEG2 encoding fails, but MPEG2 DVD and MPEG2 Blu-ray works

    Hey friends,
Every time I try to export with the standalone MPEG2 format option in Premiere Pro CS4 the file comes out empty (0 bytes) and both Windows Media Player 11 and Adobe Encore 4.0.1 say that my machine lacks the necessary codec to play the file (although, I'm thinking that this message is popping up really just because the file is empty/corrupted. I'm running on Vista SP1). Nevertheless, if I export to the MPEG2 Blu-Ray format with not too dissimilar values, everything works fine. The MPEG2 DVD format also works, granted that's lower bitrate and resolution. So, what gives? Could it have something to do with the audio?
My source files are NTSC 29.97fps HDV 1080i .mpeg files, captured from DV tape.
Here are the settings I'm using with the regular MPEG2 encoding (which fails as mentioned):
NTSC, 1440x1080i, 29.97fps, 18.50 max Mbps, 48kHz MPEG audio, which gives me a final file extension of .mpg
And the settings for the MPEG2 Blu-Ray encoding (which works perfectly):
NTSC, 1440x1080i, 29.97fps, 30.00 max Mbps, 48kHZ PCM audio, which gives me a final file extension of .m2v with a separate .wav audio file
Anyway, any help would be appreciated. Did I just completely miss the boat on some well known MPEG2 audio encoding issue or something?
Oh, and my system is Core 2 Duo 3.33 Ghz 4 gigs of ram gigantic harddrive, etc. I'm fairly certain this isn't a hardware issue. The source files playback without hesitation and the rendering time is not overly long.

Since the destination is DVD, don't waste the time or resources to encode at HDV frame sizes. It will just have to be encoded again so that it will fit the standard def DVD frame size. Re-transcoding will significantly reduce final quality.
    NTSC DVD:
    720x480 with a PAR of 0.9
    29.97 fps
"Best Practices" would dictate elementary (separate) video and audio streams (.m2v and .wav). Avoid multiplexed .mpg files.
"Easiest Practices" would dictate exporting from Premiere as an .avi file and letting Encore handle the transcoding automatically.
