MPEG-2 import

Hi,
I am looking to work with the Prelinger Archive and am interested in knowing if there is a way to edit MPEG-2 with iMovie. I tried importing and it just glowed back at me without doing anything.

  • MPEG-2 Import: How?

    Hi,
Googled a lot, but nothing helped. I have mpeg-2 movies from my digicam, which are already on disk. I don't want to convert them before importing into iMovie. I tried putting them on a disk image, but it did not work. How exactly can I import mpeg-2?
    TIA
    Arne

If you have iMovie '08, then you can import the MPEG-2 files without using MPEG-Streamclip. You just have to trick iMovie. Grab a USB 2.0 external drive and create a folder called MP_Root in the root directory of that drive. Inside the MP_Root folder, create folder called 101PVN001. Place your MPEG-2 files inside that folder and change the extension to .MPG (if it isn't already). Then open iMovie '08 and it should recognize the drive as a camcorder and begin to generate thumbnails for the MPEG files it finds in the MP_Root > 101PVN001 directory.
If you googled this issue, you should have come across the following URL:

  • MPEG-2 import in FCPX

I apologize if I ask again a a frequent question but I doen't find the answer.
A colleague provides me a HDV file in mpeg-2 format.
But FCPX doesn't allow the import of this file in my event library.
Does I really need to convert this file ? (which is quite heavy 12Go)
Thank you much for your answers...

If you can't simply drag and drop it into an Event I'm guessing that's likely in a format the FCP doesn't support directly. So try this instead: http://www.squared5.com/ and then: http://www.divergentmedia.com/clipwrap

  • Mpeg 2 import issue

    Hi,
I keep having the same problem importing an Mpeg 2 file (.m2v) into DVDSP 4.
The file name appears in the asset window, however it's color is faded. then after 5 seconds or so, it disappears.
The 'Video Asset' details appear on the right side of the screen but then disappear at the same time as the file name.
no error dialogues appear at all.
    Any ideas?

How did you create the MPEG-2 file? What settings did you use?

  • MPEG Streamclip imports .... shakey audio???

Per people's recommendations here, I have "hijacked" some video from homemade DVD's via MPEG Streamclip. The quality looks excellent. (It was either this way or with Toast or with Popcorn ... I settled for Streamclip.)
When I go to import and edit the video in Final Cut, once I render it to make a new film, I get clipped audio .... almost static-like. Any idea what's causing this? Some of the stuff I imported looks and sounds fine, then others sound bad once rendered in Final Cut.
    Any advice?

Verify the audio you brought into FCP was 48khz/16bit.

  • H264 MPEG AVI import video timeline problem

    Hi,
I am a new user of Adobe Premiere CS4.  I am having a problem of importing H264 MPEG AVI files.  I set my project to be HDV 720p 30fps.  I grabbed Gspot and it has identify my video is a H264 codec name H.264/MPEG-4 AVC.  When I import the video I setup the timeline and when I do a playback review in the far left window (default setting).  It play the vido super fast, but the audio is playing normally.  I zoom in the timeline and it seems to think each second is one frame.  So it is playing the video like 30x speed(not 100% on how much faster, just lot).  What am I doing wrong?
After playing around some more, it looks like the video are keyframes as the time jump from frame to frame is huge, not what it look like in a WMP.  Did I somehow imported and it stripped out the deltas?

I looked at the thread and tried it, I get this error.

  • MPEG Video Import Issues (Not Trial)

    Hi Everyone,
I am fairly new to PP CS3. Up until recently I have been using basic Video Editing tools. I have decided since I like video editing so much, that I am going to try and go into it full force. So I bought my friends copy of CS3 Master suite off of him (because his company bought him two licenses and he only needs one so I got it cheap) and away I go.
So, with that in mind. Please be patient if I sound like noob because I am. I am a system admin, but when it comes to this stuff, I know very little compared to most of you I am sure.
Right now I am just doing something really basic to get my feet wet. I have imported a bunch of Kids shows I recorded using my Media Center PC and want to make a compilation of just the musical scenes for my little girl. I have done this type of stuff with Pinnacle in the past but I seem to running into a weird issue.
The video's are a standard MPEG 2 DVD compliant format. The capture card I use is a Hauppauge PVR 150 so it does the hardware encoding on the board.
If I watch these files on my TV or in Media Player Classic/WMP/VLC they all look fine. The minute I view them in PP CS3 they get this weird distortion. It looks like digital artifacts from say a bad digital cable stream, except it is all colorful and such. Dare I say the "Technicolor rainbow" :)
I thought at first that maybe it was just because the preview is a lower quality. So I did a small amount of editing and exported the video. After watching the exported video, the weird distortion IS there. So I am not sure what to do about this. I did see one post on the forums that suggested simply changing the file extension to AVI might help. I did this and odly enough, it did fix the video issue, but then the sound was completely out of synch.
I have looked around the forums and seem some references to MPEG file issues but none seem to describe the issue I am having and most seemed related to trial versions of the software not having the MPEG codec licensed. That would not be my situation.
Just as a last note. I know that MPEG files are highly compressed and are usually and especially in the case of DVD's the final product not meant for further editing. However, in this case I am just cutting sections out so I didn't think there would be an issue. Also, as I mentioned above, I have done this without issue on Pinnacle.
If anyone has any suggestions. I would appreciate it.
    Thanks again.

    Kyle,
It sounds like it could be a CODEC issue. I'd start by getting a bit of freeware, G-Spot, http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ and installing it. Run your MPEG-2 in G-Spot and see what it says about it. Your capture card could be doing the compression in a CODEC that PP does not work nicely with, or that it does not/can not access on your system. G-Spot will give you the CODEC used/required. Also, it will render the file with just a few mouse clicks and you can view it, with audio, in G-Spots viewer. How does it look there, just like in WMP?
I assume that you are doing all of the work on the same computer, right? If so, any CODEC available to WMP (and G-Spot) *should* be accessible to PP.
Actually doing a "conversion" to AVI would be better than just chaning the extension of the file. The Premiere-pedia has a full set of FAQs on file conversions. Eddie Lotter, the "gate-keeper" of the pedia offers this link:
    http://premierepro.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ%3aHow_do_I_import_%E2%80%9Cxyz%E2%80%9D_format_files %3F
Hope that the forum does not truncate the URL.
As for sync issues, if the Audio & Video are out of sync by a constant amount, you can alt-click on the Audio and adjust it, until the sync comes in. You will want to Zoom the Timeline and also turn off the "Snap" feature, when you begin adjusting the sync. Find a point that is pretty obvious, like a sound that has a distinct visual associated with it. Dialog can be used, if the visual is shot tight enough to see the actor's lips. Do this BEFORE you do any cutting of the Clip. Once you have matched the sync, then you can cut and all should stay the same. However you should not have to do this, if your file is something that PP can play with. PP likes DV-AVI footage, that one shoots with a DV tape camera best, but should work with what you have, to a lesser degree.
Doing VHS captures to PP on my system (Turtle Beach A-D card) yields an 8 frame sync issue, that I have never cleared up. However, with the above syncing technique, it edits fine. These captures are done AVI uncompressed, but the sync problem exists with all of the possible formats from the TB card. Some day, I need to address this problem, rather than just do the workaround.
As for the exact distortion, that you describe, I have not seen that, but maybe others have and can tell you that I'm full-of-it, but give you a fix. Hey, that's all that's important, right? Believe them.
You might want to go up a level in the hierarchy of this forum (to get ALL versions of Premiere) and do a search for "MPEG + distortion," and similar, to see if someone else has had this problem. The Premiere-pedia is another good source of info too, though its "search" is not as good. I often find that Google does a better job, searching the P-pedia. Premiere-pedia:

  • MPEG-1 import & No Audio--Options???

I just switched to Apple from Windows, and am trying to use iMovieHD to work with video I take with my Sony camera. The camera takes the video in MPEG-1 format, and I see a FAQ comment to explain what I experience: iMovie won't import the audio with this format. What options do I have to edit these video clips with audio? One big reason I went with Apple was for the iLife package, and not to be able to work with my video clips effectively is a BIG problem. Thanks!

Thanks for the tips, but this is exactly the sort of multi-step, find-a-way-to-make-it-work with obscure, home-made 3rd party software nonsense for which Windows catches such crap. MPEG-1 is a mainstream video format that Sony, at least, uses on all its digital cameras, to my knowledge. Apple shoud support it, or offer clear warnings to people that an entire camera line is unusuable with its supposedly user-friendly iLife suite. I'm glad I haven't sold my much high-end Windows laptop yet--I'm going to rescosider this switch, as I refused to clutter my computer with junk soiftware that works half-assed when avoiding it was the purposde of buying the Apple in the first place; if I'm going to deal with this process, I might as well do it with my 3.2 Gz Windows laptop!!!

  • MPEG-2 import into Photoshop

The specs for PS CS3 Extended Edition says MPEG-2 is supported if an encoder is available. Is it possible to import MPEG-2 clips into PS? If so, how? What I want to do is move HDV clips from Premier Pro CS3 to PS Extended and do some corrections and then move back. How is this done? Thanks!

Well I never tried it. But from what I read photoshop uses quicktime for importing media. According to Apple mpeg2 is an option you can purchase for quicktime pro.

  • MPEG-4 Import Variation Speed

    Imported a 700mb MPEG4 file into iMovie6 = 15min
    Imported a 500mb MPEG4 file into iMovie6 = 1.5hrs
    Why?
Both were ripped with the same software (Handbrake) from VOB -> MPEG4.
    iMac 2ghz Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

H.264 is one of the slowest things to convert to. n Running it single pass or twaking the setting will speed it up. If you have a really fast machine you can rip things faster than realtime.

  • AE CS4 Is no longer importing my mpeg files - error 86: 1

    Hello,
This is really weird. As of yesterday my HD mpeg files imported and played just fine in After Effects. Today I went to import a new clip (that I just captured in Premiere CS4) and it gave me error 86:1 saying it is an unsupported format, when it isn't.
I have over 20 AE projects that contain mpeg clips from my camera, none of these projects will open any of these clips as of today. Every project I open gives me error after error saying this clip and that clip are unsupported then it says the clips are missing footage.  Yesterday everything was fine but today not so good.
Does anyone know what the hell is going on here?
I am on a Mac running the latest version of Leopard. I installed the 10.5.8 update a few days ago and these mpegs have opened in AE since then.So I am ruling that out
Other than that everything else has been normal. As I said, yesterday these mpeg clips were working fine. Now they are not.
any advice anyone can offer is appreciated.
    Aloha,
    ~ 0

well shortly after posting the same problem started happening with Premiere as well, except Premiere would tell me the pixel dimensions were to large on the footage (??1920x1080 too big)anyway, I uninstalled and then reinstalled both AE and Premiere and repaired my disk permissions again and everything is okay now. Wheeeeew. was praying I did not have to reinstall my os.

  • Import mpeg from PC

In continuation of my previous mail, when I open the mpeg movie (imported from a PC) in FCP, I do get the image that I can rotate but now...
I don't have any sound ! while the same clip run in a PC movie application shows the sound piks and play the sound..
I tried to import the file in imovie. Worked. then tried to extract sound. Did it twice and twice the application quit when I wanted to extract. Happened again after trashing pref of imovie.
Is there a way to extract sound from such an mpeg movie directly in FCP ?
Should I change format of the clip ? (I can do it on the PC). If yes should I use AVI or MPEG5 format (these are the options on the PC)
    Thanks in advance
    Bernard

Export the file from the PC as quicktime.
Either that or try MPEGStreamclip on the MPEG2 file to Demux the audio from the video.
    Cheers,

  • New to Editing and Have Some Important Questions

    Greetings All,
I would consider myself a new editor - only because I feel I have so much to learn. Currently I edit for a local television show that broadcast on a cable network - I have been using makeshift solutions to get the job done - but would like to move into being a total professional.
Currently I have - Final Cut Studio 2 (will be upgrading to the new release in approx. 2 weeks) - 8 Core Mac Pro (upgraded video card & and extra ram)
    - 23 inch Display (will purchase an additional 30" HD Display in approx. 2 weeks) -Mac Book Pro
    -Adobe After Effects
I know that I need some sort of deck that can be used to put the tapes in and log and capture into final cut pro - (currently I rec. the footage on dvd and use MPEG to import the footage into Final Cut) - any recommendations on the type of deck I should get - something affordable that is universal that can be used with many types of tapes. Also I have been told that I may need a broadcast monitor - I've also been told that if I get the 30" HD display that I won't need a broadcast monitor- thoughts on this please? As a side not I have a 32 inch 720p flat screen Samsung television could this be used as a monitor? I've heard some discussion about Konika video capture card - after researching I'm still not sure I understand exactly what it's purpose is? Please help - is this something that I will need? What am I missing in my workflow? Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated - thanks

only because I feel I have so much to learn<</div>
Including where to post. This here's the LiveType forum.
You don't need one deck, you need a deck specific to every kind of tape you have to use. You probably only need a DVCAM deck. If you need Beta you already know that. If you don't know that, you need to start with a basic video production class at a college or high school. That's not a service we provide here in these forums.
The 30" Apple Cinema is way more screen than you need for FCP. Save your money and just get another 23".
Konica does not make capture cards. You may be thinking of Kona, easily researched.
You may or may not need a broadcast monitor. What you need is the firm knowledge and experience to make that decision on your own.
My suggestion is to look up a video expert in your market area and prepare your management to pay them for their expertise as a consultant. Your post indicates you have way too much to learn. You can do it in books and in many hours of online research but you're going to spend more time and money doing that than you would simply by hiring someone to do the easy parts for you.
