Mpeg 2 to mpeg1 via Compressor 2

Here's the situation: Client calls, needs versions of their TV spots for a powerpoint presentation. I'm given the DVD originals and asked to provide it. I:
1) Rip the spots via Cinematize to Quicktime files with an mpeg2 video track and an integer (big endian) audio track. This plays just fine in Quicktime 7.
2) Drop the ripped .mov files onto Compressor, apply my tweaked mpeg1 .ppt compressor and submit.
Results are a file with audio, but flat black video, which changes to pure white somewhere within the clip.
I then do the same thing with Sorenson 3 output. Same results.
Then test with MPEG-4 Improved NTSC, Pixlet, and 3GPP, and the video is there.
Use MPEG1-DVD1.85Mbps and the video track is just like my mpeg1 and Sorensen settings.
So it's not just my settings.
What's going on?

An additional observation: I took a .dv file as input, applied the same Compressor mpeg1 settings that are failing me with my mpeg2 source file, and got a perfectly fine mpeg1 file out.

  • Burning a DVD from Final Cut Pro X via Compressor - No audio?

I have attempted to burn a DVD from a Final Cut Pro X project using Compressor, however the result was silent.
I used compressor because my FCPx project is in NTSC and my DVD is for air on Australian TV (PAL).
Image seemed to burn OK however there is no audio.  Can anyone advise what I may have overlooked?
This is the first time I have used Compressor, and I am fairly new to FCP X.
    thanks,
    Geoff

Thanks Russ.  OK, I am now rendering again via Compressor 4, this time I have 2 files in one tab - 1) a MPEG-2 and 2) an AC3 file.  Seems to make sense.
To burn the DVD immediately after, I added a 'Job Action' to 'Create DVD' after the render, and the dialog confuses me.  No problems with the 'Job Action' tab, but the "A/V Attributes" tab indicates the follwing:
Type:  Final Cut Pro.app  (shouldn't this be a reference to the rendered file/s?)
Video - showing the same dimensions of my FCPx Project file (NTSC  ..640 x 480)  instead of the MPEG-2 (Pal ...720 x 576).
Audio - Properties show Linear PCM... 6 channels, etc... not the AC3 file.
My question is, how do I create a DVD from the newly rendered files output from Compressor - is the Job Action the way to do it, and if so, how do I get it to reference the new files?
    Thanks,
    Geoff

  • Exporting via Compressor - submit - failed

When I use Export via Compressor - and I use QT Pro Res - and destination is Movies Folder, then submit - then in the History window it has returned "Failed" 3 times now. The status bar shows, but never any indication that it even starts to work its magic or anything - just after a few seconds, maybe a minute, the word Failed appears. Argh. The motn project is 5 minutes long full of stills and a little video with audio. Help - what am I doing wrong?
In looking thru this forum, I thot the best export would be QT ProRes - is that causing the failure?
I previously exported via QT(not compressor) and the resulting file is 10gb which doesn't run smoothly but jerks and hiccups like a pre-rendered file. And 10gb wont fit onto DVD which is where this project will go - as a gift.
    help

I surely do not take it personal. I have learned that you folks in this group are the best resource I have. I know I am in way over my head. I truly do not know about codecs.
I have taken Motion directly in to FCP - but I didn't think it would work this time. I should have tried.
Someone came along at work and told me to use Visual Hub and use setting for mp4, and also try using the DV - ready for FCP - I did both. I really never think of it as wasted effort if I can learn by what I doing, and that is occurring as you are all explaining to me what I should be doing.
Now as for workflow - I think I did the right thing by starting with Motion, then with the big file sizes went to Visual Hub - but probably could have just gone to opening the Motion files in FCP - then rendering out for DVSP.
System settings are a boggle to me - so I just use NTSC - DV 720x480 and hope that works - so far the results in my projects are good.
Again, Thank you for taking time to explain - I appreciate all comments.

  • DVD Studio Pro not playing back audio of asset converted from FCP via compressor.

    I exported project via compressor:
    File Extension: m2v

        Format: M2V
        Width: 720
        Height: 480

        Crop: None
        Frame rate: 29.97
        Frame Controls: Off
        Aspect ratio: 4:3
        Field dominance: Bottom first
        Average data rate: 3.6 (Mbps)

            Maximum data rate: 7.5 (Mbps)
        High quality
        Best motion estimation
Closed GOP Size: 15, Structure: IBBP
        DVD Studio Pro meta-data enabled
This took about 7.5 hours.  I exported the audio separately as AC3. Finder plays it sound & pictures.  Quicktime plays the video.  DVD Studio Pro, when I drag the assets (video, audio) to the timeline editor, so I can play it in the viewer, it plays the audio the video is black.  No setting in view or any other setting will get it to play the video.  This project is due to ship today and I don't want to re import it if I don't have to.
I exported this project before the MPEG2 export as a Qicktime with .mov suffix.  This plays alright, but there is artifacting around motion.  I think this is due to low VBR, but don't know.  Can ayone help?

    If I may chime in...
I'm a little confused on the "what plays what" part, but  all that really matters is what DVDSP sees/plays.
I've worked on a system like yours and what I'd recommend is:
    1. NEVER export via Compressor. It's just ungodly slow on anything less than a Quad. Export a self contained QuickTime Movie using the first export option and use that to feed Compressor.
    2. Segment your output into manageable clips (I like 15-20 minutes) both to perfect the encoding and so you aren't re-encoding the whole show if something goes sour. It will all play fine as long as it's all in the same DVDSP timeline.
From what you describe, I'm thinking you're on an early version of Compressor that had A-Pack as the AC-3 encoder. This is no biggie, I mention it mostly to verify. Early Compressor was good too.
Make maybe a 5 minute piece to tune up. Just export as normal, then into Compressor. Your encoding values seem about right. Get the AV pair into DVDSP and it should play. I'm guessing that part of your problem is that the processor is fighting to handle the project size. Build the test clip project and look at it in DVD Player to view what would have been burned. If all looks OK, go for it. If not, bring back the results for discussion. This should be a snap, it's just a really big project.  Keep your head up, I had a friend do a 225-minute disk on his G5...

  • Export as QT or via compressor

    Hi everyone,
Sorry for cross posting, but I've had no replies on the DVD SP forum.
I'm editing in FCP and making a menued SD DVD. I've had success in laying out the DVD project.
The source material is low quality and duration overall a few minutes. I'm adding a few supers to the clips.
My question is, will I get better result exporting via compressor or via a QT export (using current settings PAL 25FPS 16:9)?
    Thanks in advance.
    Steve

You know, I've found all the functionality of compressor in dvdsp-- it's just that you have to drill really deeply into the settings to get there.
Not saying use DVDSP necessarily, but the functionality is there.
EDIT forgot to add that exporting FCP directly to compreessor is a really time consuming process and locks up both applications. Best to export a self-contained movie, do NOT recompress all frames. That way you're just copying your sequence.

  • Exporting Multitrack Via Compressor to AC3 5.1

    Hi all.
I've been trying to export separate tracks from STPro via Compressor to create a 5.1 AC3 file to use as audio for a DVD. I've been told it's 'as easy as it gets' but i'm not having much luck...
I only want simple spot FX, using the video preview to time them.
However, when I export and make a DVD (and rush home after work to test it) all sounds are dead centre. My DVD Player says t's a Dolby Digital sound alright - but mono.
I've been exporting the tracks to different outputs, thinking they would go to each channel in turn. What am I doing wrong?
Or is there a better way - perhaps in DVD Studio Pro - using seperated mono files...?
Thanks in advance, especially to the following post...

    Hi,
I did a quick check on my PB (Standard stereo output) and it seems that you cannot export it this way, since you can only assign 1 or 2 to the various outputs and the channel layout only takes a look at this. If you have an output unit that supports more than two channels it would work.
    Another albeit more cumbersome workflow:
    - Put each channel in a seperate track and do the mixing.
    - Mark the tracks you want to export
    - Go to File->Export and choose "Export Selected Tracks"
    - Specify where you want to save the files
    - After exporting the files open up compressor and select File->Import Surround Sound Group
    - Put the saved files in the correct channels
    - Convert it to AC3 5.1
I have not found an easier way to create 5.1 files without 5.1 hardware support, hopefully future versions of STP will take care of that.
    /Mike

  • How to convert a .flv file into a Youtube sharing .mov file via Compressor?

I'm trying to convert a .flv file into a Youtube sharing .mov file via Compressor but every time I submit it, it fails due to error code -50. It worked two hours ago (albeit, very slowly) with another .flv file but now it refuses to even try. Please help!

Sorry you're having problems, but it's not surprising. The error code is invalid media.
The easy way is to forget about Compressor and upload the Flash file directly to You Tube with their uploader.
You'll also save a generation of compression loss.
    Good luck.

  • Export to AppleTV via Compressor, Chapter Markers Wrong

I'm exporting various projects out to AppleTV via Compressor with Chapter Markers. Works great except for the Chapter Markers, which are out of sync...significantly, by 30 seconds or so. Any ideas on what the problem might be or how to ensure Chapter Markers will transfer over to the AppleTV setting in compressor?

So this is a Compressor-specific issue, right?
What I mean to say is, if you're exporting QT movies out of FCP, those do not exhibit the shift in chapter markers, correct? Just trying to determine if FCP/QT is the culprit here.
Or are you exporting directly to Compressor? Or adding the chapter markers directly in Compressor?

  • NEW & IMPROVED! Export Via Compressor

I just noticed that Export via Compressor no longer ties up FCP! Once you submit your batch, you're free to go back into FCP, close that project and open another and work.
    Sweetness.
I'm on 5.1.4, not sure when this was implemented.

    EDIT, FALSE ALARM.
I just realized after I posted the topic that I had added a surround sound group to my batch before submitting it. When I looked at the monitor, it was working on the surround sound group. Once it hit the stuff off the timeline, it grabbed FCP again, so, false alarm.

  • Export Sequence via Compressor

    Hello,
When I do File->Export->Export via Compressor and once my sequence is in compressor and I make some custom settings for compressing, my FCP doesn't respond anymore (visible in force to quite). I can't manage to get a job going since every time it does that.
    What can I do ?
    Thanks for reading !

Yes I know but if one has to always export via QuickTime movie before putting the movie in Compressor he looses time compared to going directly to Compressor.
Well, not necessarily. Compressor operates much slower when you export directly from FCP and you cannot make use of Qmaster to speed it up.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/blog/posts/usingcompressor_with_multiplecores.html
If your timeline is fully or partially rendered and you export a reference movie (i.e. deselect the "self-contained" option), you should experience a significantly faster export from FCP.

  • Can't make MPEG-2 with audio via Compressor

    Hi guys, help,
I'm trying to make a single file MPEG-2 with video AND audio exporting from FCP.
This file is intented for broadcast television, so i can't end up with 2 seperate audio/video files.
Every time I select MULTIPLEXED MPEG-1/LAYER 2 AUDIO I get some *.m2t file which I cannot play in anything. Is it possible to just get a simple MPEG-2 file with audio and video?
    Many thanks.

Are you using Compressor 2 or 3? In v.3 there are 3 MPEG-2 options, listed under Apple/Formats/MPEG-2/
    they are:
Elementary Stream which is your basic .m2v file, video only, used for DVDs
Program Stream which is a .mpg file - probably the one you would want
Transport Stream - .m2t file - what you are getting now.
I am not familiar enough with the different streams to give you a breakdown of what they all mean, but I have encountered similar issues. The .m2t file will play on systems that recognize the format, unforunately the Mac doesn't seem to recognize it natively (and yet it created it!!) The .mpg is probably what you are looking for but I remember having problems building it in Compressor 2 so you might want to consider the upgrade. Worth it for Compressor alone in our shop!
Now for my problem, does anyone know how to get a 5.1 mix embedded into the .m2t file??

  • HOW LONG TO BURN BLU RAY VIA COMPRESSOR 3.5?

Does anybody know the ballpaerk figure as to how long a 115 minute FCP 7 project exported to self contained movie and brought into Compressor 3.5 to burn a blu ray disk on an external blu ray writer will take? Is Roxio Toast any faster? Thanks much for your help.

    iamfrustrated wrote:
This is getting more interesting by the minute. I have now set the project up as two blu ray DVD's -each around 72 minutes. When I go to 'send to compressor' from fcp 7, if I select HD DVD 90 minutes (assume that is the correct method as there is no 'blu ray' option) and then set Job Action to Blu Ray, I get the message with that nice little yellow triangle warning stating: "Cannot create Blu Ray disc as no target that is either mpeg 2 video elementary stream or H.264 stream". The fcp project in compressor is dolby digital prof. 2.0 and HD H.264 6.75 mbps.
I'm obviously doing something wrong here(?)
The HD DVD presets create files that are usable in DVD Studio Pro for making HD DVD's - not for authoring Blu-ray discs.
Here's what you need to do:
Create a new preset from "H.264 for Blu-ray".
Leave the video format and frame rate set to automatic, but lower the bitrate down to 20 Mbps with a max of 25 Mbps.
Then add a Dolby Digital Audio track as a second target.
Under job action set to create blu-ray disc but save it to the hard drive rather than trying to burn directly. (I know this an annoying extra step but there's been issues reporting with burning Blu-ray/AVCHD discs over 10 minutes in length.)
This will get it onto a single disc and 20 Mbps h.264 will still look pretty good.

  • MPEG-2 Fails in Compressor

I have searched the forums long and hard and have been unable to find anything regarding this problem. I am creating a short 2 minute HD video that involves exported (QT - Animation 1920x1080) motion files and still images (I have tried TIF, PSD and even JPEG) and Cross Dissolves. Nothing more. I have been making similar projects involving the same material just different content for about 6 months now with no problems. But now I am having a consistent problem and constant failure when exporting.
My Sequence settings are Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920 x 1080 29.97 fps with Square Pixel Aspect. Everything renders wonderfully and exports wonderfully using any other format but the MPEG-2 Program Stream in Compressor. Unfortunately this is the format I need for our video productions playback for HD material. I'm almost positive the problem is within Final Cut because I have even tried exporting as a stand alone QT File and dragging into Compressor. I have even tried using MPEG Streamclip to convert my exported QT File to many different formats before using Compressor to do the MPEG-2 conversion. Every time in Compressor it says it failed with the log error 3x crash service down: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>
    <services></services>
Any insight on to what is occurring would be helpful, its just so weird that it only has this fail log when I convert it to MPEG-2 Program Stream. I am already exploring other formats that may work with our video production team.

Has the trial for After Effects CC expired?
You are allowed to launch After Effects CC one time after the 30-day trial period has expired, but when you do so a a bug exists in this state: MPEG2 files can not be read or written.
The only solution for this bug is to license After Effects CC; ex. purchase a subscription. My apologies for the problems you're having with the payment system. As Rick says, please contact customer support for help with this.
