Mpeg 4 H.264 files

I just recently purchased the Sanyo E1 waterproof flash video camera. After importing some of the mp4 files into FCE, I continue to receive an error message when trying to preview the files in the preview window.
Viewing via Quicktime works flawlessly as does viewing the clips in FCE post rendering.
Is there a setting or simple fix that will allow me to preview mp4 files in FCE to make the editing easier?
The errors are "not found" and "out of memory" after double-clicking the clips in the FCE browser.

I just read another post about converting the file to DV prior to importing to FCE. This method works well.
Is there a way to skip this step without pre-converting or rendering post import to FCE?

Unable to create iPod-playable h.264 files using Compressor

I've been running some video compression work for iPod, and have been able to do "quick & dirty" exports to iPod via QuickTime Pro (standalone & from within FCP).
To get more of a handle on the compression parameters than the default "Export to iPod" setting allows, I have had success using 3'rd party tools, and using customized settings in QuickTime Pro (most excellently discussed in Ken Stone's page here: http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/video_to_ipodstone.html)

What I really want to do, though, is create a saved Compressor setting for setting up batches of iPod conversions, and so I don't have to hand-tweak each export in QT Pro.
I am running current version of QT and Compressor, but CANNOT create MPEG 4/h.264 files that will load onto an iPod for the life of me.
Here's how it goes down for some different Compressor settings, with their results:
1.)
File format: QT
File extension: .mov
Video: 320x240 15 fps MPEG-4 Video (note for those playing along at home that there is **no way** to specify h.264 nor "Baseline Low Complexity" in the Compressor dialog)
Audio: AAC
Result: a quick to encode, plain old MPEG4 file with only so-so quality that will load and play on an iPod
2.)
File format: QT
File extension: .mov
Video: 320x240 15fps h.264 (again: no way to select "Baseline Low Complexity" within Compressor)
Audio: AAC
Result: Slower to encode, higher quality and smaller file that will NOT load onto an iPod. Error in iTunes states that the file "cannot be played on this iPod"
3.)
File format MPEG4
Extension: mp4
Video: 320x240 15fps Basic (0) ISMA profile, Medium VBR. Note that there is no way to specify h.264
Audio: 44.1/128 kbps
Results: Same as in #1 above
What I feel I have it boiled down to is that there is some weirdness in Compressor that doesn't connect to the QuickTime compression settings properly. Where you SHOULD be able to specifiy h.264 and Low complexity settings (as you can when using QT Pro) for an MPEG4 file, you cannot in Compressor. Similarly, when specifying h.264 in Compressor, there is no way to specifiy Baseline Low Complexity.
Long post- sorry! I have tried many more iterations than are listed here. I'll spare everyone those, as the examples above I think illustrate my predicament.
Anyone have any thoughts?

OK.. first, thanks for the reply. Sort have had given up on finding an answer here and just checked back here yesterday. Lo and behold I do see the iPod setting on a newer machine- and started to look into why exactly it isn't on the main workstation here.
Turns out that you don't get updates unless the software is registered. Maybe it's just me, but I never bother with product registations (until today I guess).
So a word up to anyone else who does the same. You won't get FCP automatically updated unless you register.
I assume after I update everything I should be AOK
Also- I should have marked your reply as SOLVING my problem- but my first instinct was to say to myself "Of course I'm using current versions- what kind of jamoke does this guy think I am, anyway?" So, feeling very charitable, I marked your reply as merely helpful.
And now I have to eat my words! Sorry about that. Guess you'll get good karma points somehow. Maybe I'll look into that some more while I'm downloading updates this AM.

Problems converting h.264 files for use in Premiere

Hello,
Given the fact that I've searched for an solution to this and everything I read is two steps ahead of me, I'm sure there is some basic no brainer thing that I'm overlooking and I apologize for being a noob. I'm attempting to edit HD files for the first time and the files come out of the camera in h.264. I first tried converting with mpeg streamclip but most of the codecs were apple. I tried a few codecs but none of them worked properly with premiere (video in source monitor was jerky, or it'd play fast and freeze on the last frame for the duration of the clip instead of playing the entire clip at proper speed, etc.).
I went through a few other programs and I've still had no success. Every conversion I attempt has some issue in Premiere. My new computer should have no issues running HD clips. It's an i7 quad core with 8 gb RAM.
I know I need to convert the h.264 files to edit in premiere, but I just need to know what program I can use to convert it and what codec will work in Premiere.

I'm going to guess that you're on a PC. Most folks editing Canon HDSLR on PC's seem to be transcoding to Cineform codec to get realtime editing. They have plenty of flavors at prices from $199-$1499 for the Prospect4K that is specifically built for Premiere. You can download 30-day fully functioning trial from www.cineform.com. You'll also find lots of helpful stuff over at www.cinema5d.com
CS5 promises native, realtime editing of multiple layers of h.264 files so I'll actually be putting my dough toward a new system rather than the cinefom plugin.

Working with 720p h.264 files

Is my Mac supposed to be able to work directly with 720p h.264 files? Macbook Pro 2,33 Ghz with 2 gig RAM...
From my limited testing, I have seen extremely slow scrubbing with the previously mentioned files.
I was thinking of buying a Elgato turbo.264 HD for importing video from my Canon HF11... but I don't think its worth it, if working with the video is so slow...

h.264 is primarily a playback format. It is designed to be highly compressed, yet give high quality pictures. It is similar to AVCHD in this regard. AVCHD uses h.264 internally.
The way h.264 compression works is the [Group of Pictures compression technique|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groupofpictures], where for every full frame, there are, say, 24 frames of highly compressed information. For example, imagine a video of an eagle flying. You get one full frame of the eagle flying. The next 24 frames say, "background is the same, but shifted over to the left, eagle's wings are moving up and down, etc."
When you import AVCHD, iMovie converts all these partial frames to full frames in the Apple Intermediate Codec. You can do the same thing for h.264 by using a free tool like MPEG Streamclip. You can drag your h.264 file into streamclip and export as AIC full frames.
This makes it much easier to edit.

Can I import 264 files into Premiere Elements 11

I get a generic error when I attempt to import some 264 files. These were created on a cctv system.

As soon as I saw this post, I searched for the .264 extension in my hard drive. Found two files - could play both of them in Premiere Elements 11 and 12. Just imported them and played them on the expert room timeline.
Pathetic quality of the video though. I am not sure how these are there in my hard drive! Got to check with my friends for whom I have edited some projects if it belongs to them.

Converting MPEG-4 video files to AppleTV

I'm trying to convert an MPEG-4 Video file in iTunes to AppleTV. I have tried various settings when exporting to iTunes. The imported file plays fine in iTunes, but the converted file just gives me audio and a white screen - no picture. The converted file is only about 39MB, when the original MPEG-4 file was about 2G. It appears that the audio portion is converting, but not the video. Can anyone out there tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I think the mystery has been solved. I switched to H.264, and it worked beautifully. Apparently, that's the only format that works. Too bad that neither QuicktimePRO nor iTunes mention this when you attempt to do the conversion to AppleTV...

To Decode and play MPEG-2 Video files with JMF

I amin serious trouble with a problem. I am developing a Simulator, a function of which is to decode MPEG-2 Video files in real time and play it as well.I have got a MPEG-2 Decoder implemented in C from an open source and need to integrate with my Simulator which is writtebn in Java. The integration part I am doing via JNI(Java Native Interface). Now I have a bunch of C files in MPEG-2 decoder which are to be compiled during the Execution of the Java Simulator.Can anybody give some idea about how to call multiple C files from the Java Source through JNI at one go? Another problem I am facing is in calling a single C code from the traditional "HelloWorld" Java Code itself. The problem comes when I am trying to compile the shared library between the C native code and Java Code in my Linux Machine...I am getting the following message:

How can I view and convert .264 files from my security cameras for use on my Mac and the web?

My security cams record in a .264 file format HD. I want to view, edit, etc on my Mac, what software will do that and are there any easy tips to do this? I'm new to Mac's so I'm not sure what is the best format to convert to? mp4? Suggestions?

I have downloaded the trail....and it won't recognize my .264 files....not sure what the deal is? Here is a screen shot-they files are "grayed" out....and won't highlight. Do you see anything wrong? I'm pulling the files off of a Lorex DVR security system. LHD200

I have iMovie '11, and I am unable to access mpeg HD video files that I want to edit. The files are fine (I can open and watch them using VLC), but I cannot seem to import the files into iMovie. File Import does not work. Any suggestions??

More detail: I have a bunch of mpeg HD video files that were shot on a SONY HDR-HC3 Handycam camcorder. I would like to edit these into a single video production. I can access and view the mpeg files using VLC (Quicktime does not work with them). However, I seem to be unable to get the mpeg files to interface with iMovie '11 -- I cannot use the File --> Import command, nor can I drag-and-drop them into iMovie.
Is there something anyone might suggest to get this to work? Or are these files incompatible with iMovie? If so, I assume I must purchase a different video editing software program (e.g. Adobe Premeir Pro). Suggestions???

Yes, I tried that.   The files were ordered by their original numbers as imported from the camera, but I batched them through Phocoshop to downsize all of them into a more manageable file size.   I opened that destination folder from quick time from where it said select image sequence.   I clicked on the first one and opened it.   The result was a large image with an arrow indicating a movie was ready to go.   When I pressed the arrow, though, I realized it had only imported that one frame so there was no movie.   The files are Jpgs and are about 450 KB each.
    To your knowledge are there any links to iMovie tutorials or quick time tutorials that may address this situation? Maybe there will be one I haven't looked at yet.

Can't Play Encoded h.264 Files

I'm trying to export a sequence from Premiere CS6 (6.0.3) that combines an AVI file and an M2TS file into a h.264 file. In Premiere it looks like it encodes, and in Adobe Encoder the preview windows shows the video, yet when I try to open the file in Quicktime, VLC or Windows Media Player it won't open and I'm just given a black screen. If I encode just the AVI clip or just the M2TS clip the results are the same. However, if I set export using Match Sequence Settings it exports fine.
Has anyone experienced this? Any ideas how to resolve the problem? The last project I worked on was fine, yet for some reason this one is giving me problems. The only change is that I'm now using Windows 8, though Premiere is suppose to be compatible.

I figured out the problem. I was trying to export just the video, so I was un-checking Export Audio. Not sure why, but with no audio the video players couldn't play the video. Weird issue, but at least I can create a workaround now. Thanks for stepping in to help.

Remove closed captions from H.264 file after converting?

I processed a video file in Compressor using the Blu-Ray settings, and included a reference to a closed captions file. I now need to use the file in another application (Adobe Encore), but the closed captions appear to be hard coded in.
Is that correct? Is there anyway to remove closed captions from a H.264 file after it has been converted with Compressor?
Please help This is for a film festival, and I may not have time to process the video in Compressor again without the closed captions.

Fixed question spelling from 'form' to 'from'.

From the user manual:
"QuickTime files: Compressor adds the closed caption file as a closed caption track to the QuickTime output file."
The closed caption "track" can be turned on and off. It is not burned into the screen, as is the CC standard. Encore should handle the file just fine. You should be able to tell the DVD to have Closed Captioning turned off by default. That's all it takes.
Sub-Titles may be burned in to the screen. If you did sub-titles, yes, you'll have to re-encoded from scratch without them. When doing sub-titles in an DVD authoring program, you have the ability to enable and disable them, but in Compressor, they're burned in.

Some .mp4 (h.264) files will not stream using fms!

I've made several mp4 file using Camtasia for Mac. No matter what settings or player I use the files won't play. Encoding them from Camtasia Windows version works just fine. I assumed this was a question for Camtasia/Techsmith but they're saying there is nothing wrong with the h.264 files Camtasia for mac is encoding and says this is an Adobe/FMS issue.
I'm using the latest Camtasia version and FMS 3.5. I've used several different players and they all play mp4 but not the ones encoded in Camtasia for mac.
What might be the problem and how do I solve it. I need to be able to encode from both the Camtasia Mac and Windows version.

Would it be possible for you to install the FMS 3.5.6 update (free maintenance update) from http://www.adobe.com/support/flashmediaserver/downloads_updaters.html and check if the mp4 files play on that.

Converting h.264 files for editing

When you convert h.264 files to edit, does it matter if you convert them to apple intermediate codec or prores? I'm going to export the finished project back to h.264 anyway so I just wanted to know if it made a difference, and what the advantages and disadvantages of converting the footage to either of those two codecs are. Thanks.

Because the camera records H.264 with a bunch of settings that are specific to that camera. I guess that you can try to match those settings when you export...but to what end? Where will you show your work? How will it be displayed? YouTube/Vimeo doesn't play back video with that high of an H.264 data rate. Nor does DVD...BluRay has it's own spec.
The question is...what will you be exporting to for delivery...for final viewing? You'll be exporting a ProRes 422 as your master source...but then encoding from that the formats you need to deliver. Unless you plan on playing back in the camera, or via a laptop onto a projector...you won't be going back to that original spec.

Higher data rate...yes. But it will have gone through one layer of compression. But very good, low loss quality. Your eye really won't see the difference. But it will be better suited for editing and color correction...as H.264 is 8-bit 4:2:0 color space, and ProRes is 10-bit 4:2;2. It will be in better condition for editing and grading, but quality...about the same, ever ever EVER so slightly less quality. Nothing you'd notice.

Album/playlist downloaded from iTunes includes mpeg-4 video file?

I have downloaded from iTunes an album that includes an mpeg-4 video file? What is the best medium CD or DVD and format for burning the playlist? Assume it could be played on a CD player (for sound only) or a DVD player.

Handbrake includes a universal setting which makes the video compatible with the iPhone/iPod, Apple TV, and with iTunes on your computer. It also includes an iPhone/iPod compatible setting.

Upgrading to iTunes 10.6.0.40 imports MPEG-4 movie files as "QuickTime movie file" not "MPEG-4 Video file"

Recently updated itunes to 10.6 and since then adding any new MPEG-4 Video file itunes is flagging as QuickTime.
This creates an issue since my Apple TV doesn't recognize these types of files in iTunes.
To validate it's the itune upgrade, previous "MPEG-4 Video file" entries added and played on Apple-TV were imported an now show as "QuickTime Video file"

This problem has been resolved after the ATV update was received.
The ATV now recognizes the videos marked in itunes as Quick time eventhough they are Mpeg-4 video files.
