MPEG-4 in widescreen stretches to fullscreen in iDVD

I import an mpeg-4 file into iDVD and i burn the project. The mpeg-4 is a widescreen format but it is stretched when I play the dvd in any dvd players other than my G5. Is there anything to do that will keep it widescreen in other dvd players? any workaround or anything? HELP!!

What happens when you try to play the videos on your

Yes, my videos are not there at all on the i-Pod, but the videos I bought from i-Tunes all show up and play. And I have constantly updated i-Pod and i-Tunes.
Strange thing is, ALL the videos (mine and purchased i-Tunes) show up in i-Tunes and can play in i-Tunes.

  • Widescreen QT movie squished in iDVD 08 16 X 9 project

I've seen this question in a few forums but have yet to find a satisfactory solution. Widescreen movies look squished on iDVD 08 DVDs. Here's what I've been doing:
I edit and export a widescreen QT movie in FCP 6.0.4 (from a DV source).
I open the movie using QT and change the video track properties as detailed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2179
When viewing the movie in QT, it is in the proper 16 X 9 aspect ratio.
I create a new iDVD project and make sure it's widescreen. The theme is widescreen, the menu looks widescreen.
I add the 16 X 9 QT movie into the IDVD project and it looks squished from side to side, with grey bars appearing on the right and left sides of the movie's frame. This is seen on my computer screen as well as my widescreen TV (and my DVD player's settings are correct for the display). When I play the disc using my Mac's DVD player program, the screen shrinks from the widescreen menu to the squished banana-headed-people movie.
What gives? What's the correct settings and workflow to display my widescreen movies correctly on iDVD-burned discs?
    Thanks for any help!

Pretty sure DVDSP will let you set the flags for 16:9 "manually"
    From the DVDSP manual
SD DVD Menus, Tracks, and Slideshows
    • Display Mode: Choose the default aspect ratio to use when creating menus, tracks,
and slideshows in SD projects. You can choose from 4:3, 16:9 Pan-Scan, 16:9
    Letterbox, and 16:9 Pan-Scan & Letterbox.
16:9 Pan Scan & Letterbox: You can have up to 12 buttons.
Since I'm not a DVDSP pro, so you might want to ask in that forum!

  • MPEG movie files converting to another format for iDVD

    Hey,
Friend of mine recorded video of a concert. The files from her memory stick are in MPEG movie format.
I burned them from the memory stick to a disc. Now I'm trying to insert one of these MPEG movie files to a current iDVD dvd project. BUT for some reason or another it is not letting me.
Could someone please let me know how to take a MPEG movie file and insert it into a iDVD project.

Ive not actually tried protected iTunes Store files with this solution so not sure if it works (if not, yes, you would need to burn them to Audio CD and re-impot them unprotected.)
AACs are compatible with the PSP as-is however, it's just the PSP does not like the .m4a file extension. Simply renaming the extension to .mp4 will address this.
On a PC, you can create a batch file on your PSP memory stick with the following command:
    rename *.m4a *.mp4
Run this batch file after copying your iTunes AACs to the memory stick and they will work fine.
I'm sure the same can be achieved on a Mac with AppleScript or Automater, I don't have experience with those to achieve the same results though - perhaps someone could create a rename multiple files example?

  • Widescreen v. Fullscreen

I know the difference between widescreen and fullscreen, but I wanted to know if I use iMovie to make a photo slideshow that will be mainly viewed on a widescreen tv in HD will my photos stretch that entire horizontal length and will they look poor in quality, opposed to using fullscreen format iMovie slideshow on a widescreen tv?

    Hi gursk:
Select "Scale photos to fill screen" so black borders don't appear with photos that aren't cropped to the correct size ratio for your display.
Are you planning to send it iDVD?

  • MPEG DVD Pal Widescreen at 1.458 PAR, what were Adobe Thinking?

Okay apart from the fact that Adobe wanted to stiff me for another £999 to upgrade from the CS3 Production Premium suite to CS5.5, my first HDV project on the new system messed up; and I thought I was moving forward (apart from my bank balance) phew got that off my chest.  Whichever way you look at this and no matter how many technicians tell us otherwise, DVD players, You Tube, Vimeo, well the world really have been happy using a PAR of 1.422222 for PAL Widescreen and now Adobe are using 1.458 the "correct" PAR for the BBC apparently having read previous threads (well yippee da).  This doesn't help me uploading my videos for a client to You Tube, Vimeo or a DVD and having black bars either side, they couldn't care less whether it is the correct standard for the BBC or not they just want their footage to look like everyone else's.  What are you playing at Adobe, just give us another option in Media Encoder to export the same way we have been happy doing for years and stop rolling over for the BBC.  Incidentally I upload MPEG2 DVD to You Tube and have been getting good results so that is why I am using MPEG2 for You Tube and Vimeo (but I'm sure someone will now give me a good reason not to).   I have been fighting Adobe's (and Window's)  corner for the last god knows how many years while the Mac crew have been tempting me with that alluring mistress FCP, more stable audio and better colour resolution.  Adobe sort this out we've had enough of this nonsense, what is it with big companies they become god like in their sheer arrogance, give us what we want and stop toying with your minions.  This really hacks me off.

I understand the frustration that your tone implies, but you've run off the tracks here.
The computer world uses square pixels.  Vimeo, YouTube, etc.  When people upload anything but square to those services, the resulting picture is distorted, as it's displayed in square pixels.  And I see a lot of distorted videos on YouTube.
    http://support.google.com/youtube/bin/static.py?hl=en&guide=1728585&page=guide.cs
I'm fairly certain that if you upload an MPEG2 to YouTube, they're going to recompress it to FLV or MP4 for you.  It's not one of their "supported formats."  So, I wouldn't be surprised if they muck it up.
£999 to go from CS3 to CS5.5. sounds like a pretty good deal to me... that's a three version jump.  I also believe Adobe has become more responsive to customer input in the past few years, and not just "rolling over" for big clients.  But, those are opinions.

  • GridView Items stretched vertically (fullscreen)

I have a GridView which is bound to a collection of items. I'd like to style the items so that the fill the screen vertically. However I can't seem to find a way to do this.

Here you find 4 combinations to choose from for 'grouped' and 'non-grouped' items. It is essentially a matter of playing with horizontal and vertical orientation properties.

  • When switching to 16:9, Keynote stretches all fullscreen images

My presentations are hundreds of slides, no text, 1024 x 768.
Occasionally, a client wants me to present on a 16:9 screen. I go to the document pane and change it to 1920 x 1080 and voila... EXCEPT
Except that any image that was full size (covering the whole screen) is stretched. Not only that, but the metrics pane is set for constrain proportions. So now for each and every slide, I have to go in, uncheck constrain, move the picture so I can see the handles, use my eye to judge what it ought to be, unstretch it, and move it back where it belongs.
How do I instruct Keynote to leave these pictures alone, the same way it leaves any picture that isn't all the way to the edges alone?
Failing that, how can I change the images in bulk?
    Thanks!

    I appreciate your patience.
Imagine a photo that shows 10 people side by side (Albert Einstein is in the middle). In the original presentation, I placed the photo to fill the squarer aspect ratio, and thus only 7 people are shown, 2 cropped out to the left and one to the right. But Einstein is still there, so it's a great shot.
Now, I get the chance to use the wider aspect ratio, because the presentation will be done for 1000 people on a really expensive 16:9 hd projector. Great.
I change the aspect ratio of the presentation and Keynote does exactly the wrong thing. It stretches the photo, making it wider but not taller, so that einstein and the other brilliant scientists are stretched wide, making them weird.
So I have to go that slide, click on it, go to the inspector, unlock the aspect ratio (which Keynote ignored), slide it a little so I can see the handles, grab the side handle and make it narrower to get the faces back to thin again (by eye) and then slide it back so all 10 guys are showing.
There are no circumstances under which the user would EVER want Keynote to take a picture and make it wider and not taller. And yet it does.
The fascinating thing for me is that if I start with the picture inset just a little from the edges of slide, Keynote leaves it alone.
So, unless you can help me, I have to take my original, make every picture a little smaller, then change the aspect ratio and then go back and make every picture fill the screen.
Hope that was clear. I thank you and Albert thanks you.

  • How to make Widescreen Videos Display correctly in iDVD?

I shot video with my sony dvcam in 4:3 format. PAL.
I took this video and edited it in iMovie and Exported as follows:
    DVCPRO PAL; Aspect: 16x9 25fps.
Size: 720x576 16:9 (i do not preserve aspect ratio).
I take this quicktime movie file and drop it into iDVD using a non Widescreen format menu (but i go ahead and choose it to switch to widescreen when it asks me).
I have 10 small videos i do this too and out of the 10 only 2 actually play in widescreen. The other 8 start off by displaying grey side vertical bars on either side of the screen then proceed to move into a 4:3 aspect.
Why is this happening? Why only 2 work? What is happening to the other 8?
Each of the .mov files i am using display in widescreen when i open and play in QuickTime.
(i have checked using QTPro and all the aspects are set to 1024 x 576 (PAL) for each movie.
Can anyone point me some clues as to what is happening?
    THANKS

    OK found my solution.
Something in iDVD was not translating the .mov file correctly and not showing my .mov files in proper 16:9 format. It did so with 2 of them but not the other 8.
So i found a work around that made it work perfectly.
I made a new iMovie file in widescreen format. Closed iMovie. Then did a "view contents" function (cntrl click on iMovie file and "view contents"). Next i dropped the 16x9 .mov file into the Media folder. Open the iMovie file again and move the .mov file from the Trash into the Timeline. Save iMovie file. Then i dropped the iMovie file into iDVD and now i have my 16x9 movie with no problem.
I had to make these different aspects and formats because i needed 4 DVDs of each movie:
    Fullscreen PAL
    Widescreen PAL
    Fullscreen NTSC
    Widescreen NTSC
Glad i got it all to work out OK.
Also be sure to select the correct fps in the iMovie preferences before making a new iMovie. And deselect the "pillarbox and letterbox" option.

  • How can I burn an mpeg onto a DVD without having to use IDVD or IMovie?

So I've got a few jpg's and mpeg's that I would like to burn for PC friends, but the only way I can figure out how to get these onto a CD or DVD is by using IDVD or IMovie with my IMac. Is there a way around this? Why doesn't a blank DVD or CD icon come up on the desktop once inserted so that I can simply drag and drop my photos and short movies to it to be burned accordingly? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for responding Dave, but this option doesn't
seem to appear in the preferences of IDVD, DVD
Player, or Quicktime. It seems strange that the only
way I can burn a movie is to create a new IMovie
project and and then burn it via IDVD. This is a
huge hassle when all I want is a few short videos in
no particular order saved on a CD or DVD. My CD
player doesn't seem to be listed separately and is
tied into Itunes. Isn't ILife suppose to make
things easier? Thanks for your help.

  • Format bpt needs conversion to mpeg-2 so it can be used in idvd, any suggestions ? Also, it has been stated that some Mac OX'S need a download to read bot format. I have Mountain Lion 8.5

I have downloaded "Photo Theater Slideshow Movie Maker" from Apple. The format is if bpt, this is not recognized by idvd. the program does alllow a DVD to be created, but only one (1) To use idvd, several movies can be put on a DVD. Therefore, I need to get this bpt format converted to mpeg-2.   Any suggestions ? I have "Prsim" & "iskysoft", neither of these converters recognize the bpt format.

Export your Photo Theater project to .mov, which is QuickTime.  The PhotoTheater documentation indicates it can export to multiple formats, including .mov.  Import the resulting .mov file into iDVD.
iDVD, Toast and similar DVD authoring tools are normally what encode video to MPEG-2, which is the codec used on playable DVDs.

  • Problems with FC widescreen 16:9 movie and iDVD 4:3

Running: FCE v3.5 HD and iDVD 8
I'm doing a large domestic film project for friends which requires me to author my FCE movie as a DVD (as a broadcast professional my editing is normally just played straight out to digi-tape and so I'm a little green in this department!)
I've now edited the entire FCE movie and exported it as 'stand alone' files in two ways (giving me two separate movie files). One is created via the simple Export>Quicktime Movie option in FCE but, when this didn't appear to be 16:9 widescreen in the iDVD preview, I went back to FCE and created a Quicktime compressed .mov with a DV PAL 16:9 ratio.
The latter also doesn't appear as 16:9 widescreen in iDVD 8 (nor is it widescreen when I burn the DVD and play it on a TV). Both of them play in 4:3 squeeze ratio despite the iDVD project menus being in lovely widescreen.
    Why is this?
I can't see any setting that will solve this so I'd appreciate any solution or offers of help on this!
Before anyone asks, the FCE project is defintely captured and edited in 16:9 DV PAL format. I've printed it to DV video for an approval viewing and it was beautiful 16:9 widescreen.

  • Convert .mpeg files from JVC Everio HD Camcorder for iDVD/iMovie use?

    Hello,
I am a brand new Mac user, but an experienced PC user. I have a JVC Everio 30gb HD camcorder that records video as .mod files, which can then be changed to .mpeg format to view. I want to edit these files and make home DVDs with iMovie and iDVD, but they say that the .mpeg format is not recognized. What do I need to do to use these .mpeg video files with these software programs?
    Many thanks in advance!

welcome batman to the  board ...
well... the iApps iMovie and iDVD are meant to work
    with firewire connected miniDV camcorders...
you lose the convenience of the iApps... anyhow:
    Streamclip
(free) is the weapon of choice, in case, your
    HDcorder stores as mpeg1...
for mpeg2 conversion, you need additionally the Apple
    mpeg2 plugin (20$) ...
    helpful?
    Thanks for the quick response!
Well, I think they are in mpeg2 format, but not positive. Anyway, I did away with miniDV camcorders because they transfer much slower to the computer than the HD camcorder...but now I get this issue! lol I guess that's what I get for switching to a Mac!
Is there any other way besides the $20 plugin to convert the file? Will the plugin lose any quality in the conversion process?

  • MPEG Streamclip options for iMovie use and for iDVD use

    Hi.
This is my first posting so I apologise for all procedural inadequacies.
I am doing a montage of clips from different DVDs, using the DVDs as source material. For this I first run the DVDs through MPEG Streamclip, pick the relevant clips, then export the .VOB files as Quicktime files, then import them into iMovie HD, editing them together in it. I then save the montage as an iMovie HD project, import it into iDVD in order to burn a separate DVD which can be played on regular DVD players and on TV sets.
Everything looks fine until I see the final product on the TV screen. The picture quality is poor and it seems that the frame rate is odd. The sound is muffled, too. What am I doing wrong? I am not sure if I am choosing the right options in the MPEG Streamclip – Movie Exporter window (Compression, Quality, Frame Size, Frame Blending, Field Dominance, Interlaced Scaling, Reinterlace Chroma, Deinterlace Video etc.) I’m not even sure how relevant this is for this problem. I even tried exporting DVD .VOB files as MPEG4 files and as DV files instead of as Quicktime files, hoping the picture and overall quality would be better. It works in iMovie HD but when I try to import the edited montage into iDVD it won’t recognize it.
I’m stuck. Does anyone know what the optimal set of options is for what I’m trying to do? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
P.S. How do I alter the DV-NTSC setting which iMovie HD seems to have as default on the top of its window as soon as it starts up? I am in the UK and need to know that all is always set to PAL.

export the .VOB files as Quicktime files
"QuickTime" is rather vague, because it includes A LOT of very different codecs and qualities!
You want to output PAL/NTSC DV_streams if you want to import it to iMovie/iDVD! If the source is PAL, output PAL and vice versa (converting decent quality PAL<->NTSC is another can of worms).
But: if you want to preserve quality, you really should edit MPEG and re-author it as a DVD, and forget iMovie/iDVD because they want DV, and converting DVD->DV->DVD will lose quality!

  • Anamorphic widescreen or letterbox output to iDVD?

    I'm kicking myself.
We recorded our footage of a school play in 16X9 mode, edited tape to tape then, imported to a Final Cut Express project set to NTSC Anamorphic mode in "Easy Set-Up" and now can't figure out how to get widescreen or even letterbox output to iDVD.
The video appears letterboxed in FCE's preview window. But for kicks, I exported a short clip and burned an iDVD of it and it was streched on my set-top dvd player and 4X3 TV.
If the widescreen version would be truly anamorphic and appear letterboxed on standard (old) 4x3 screens, but actually scale up and fill a new widescreen monitor that would be great.
But at this point I'd accept a good, old-fashioned letterboxed version of the video. HDtv users be damned!
Any help? Hacks? Etc. P.S. I also posted this question in the FCE forum where someone suggested I ask it here.
Doing this on a 1Gig Powerbook with 1Gig of ram. iDVD 5 and FCE 2.?

    Scalzmoney,
The link on the previous post will work for you, I have done this.
    First use the Anamorphicizer
    http://homepage.mac.com/sith33/FileSharing34.html
to make iDVD5 see your movie as anamorphic. (iDVD5 is only looking for WS projects from iMovieHD, and this app does the trick for FCE/FCP projects)
Once this is done you'll fill up 16:9 TVs, and the video will letterbox on some 4:3 TVs/players combinations, but will appear "squished" on some 4:3 TVs/players. Changing the settings on some DVD players will help, but not all.
That's where you need David A's "cookbook" as listed & linked your first reply, above.
I've hacked several DVDs this way. For example, if I make a WS DVD without the cookbook, it plays as letterbox on 2 out of 3 DVD players in my house (not counting Macs). The cookbook fixes it for that last DVD player, a PS2.

  • Widescreen Quicktime goes square in iDVD

I have exported a quicktime from Final Cut that was shot in widescreen. I have exported it with the option for letter box and without. When I just play the quicktime it is in widescreen. As soon as I import it to iDVD it becomes square. I am using a widescreen menu in iDVD. The really weird thing is when I selected to letterbox if needed to maintain aspect ration it put vertical letterboxing in and made it even more narrow.
    Any thoughts

Use Anamorphizer to treat your video content so that it is recognized as anamorphic content. See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10885875&#10885875
