MPEG-4 Part 10 (H.264) Compatability

I want to create MPEG-4 Part 10 (H.264) videos, but I am unsure whether this format is compatible with all MP4 players, such as Sony Walkman, etc.
Which video players will be able to play MPEG-4 Part 10 videos? Should I be using MPEG-4 Part 2 for best compatability with devices?
The reason I want to use MPEG-4 Part 10 is because it's higher quality I find.

google "ffmpegx" or you can use the shell script which is a lot faster and more efficient. but its also a lot more complicated.

  • Converting Files to Mpeg 4 instead of H.264(x264)

Hi all. I need some help here. I'm using Handbrake to convert my DVDs to files for my Apple TV 2. My problem is that Handbrake takes 3 hours or more for a 90 minute movie. Homie don't play that. I've got like 50 movies I want to convert, and using mpeg 4 is faster! My question is, what settings can I use so that I can convert to mpeg 4 and still be able to watch the file on my Apple TV 2? I have checked the settings on the Apple site, but I still can't figure out how to set my target data rate so I don't go over the allowed limit!
    Thank you!

    1) To access the MPEG-4/Simple@L1 video encoding profile, switch the Video Codec from the "H.264 (x264)" setting to the "MPEG-4 (FFmpeg)" setting.
    2) To limit display dimensions to fit within the 640x480 (or 1200 macroblock) limitation, set the Anamorphic setting to "None" in the Picture Settings window.
    3) To set the video data rate limit, select the "Average bitrate (kbps)" Quality option and enter a setting of "2500" Kbps or less.
Be advised that while MPEG-4 Part 2 encoding is much faster, the codec is less efficient than the H.264/x264 codecs and the quality of a MPEG-4, Simple@1 coded file is roughly equivalent to what you would get with an H.264 encoded file having a bit rate in the 1,000-1,250 Kbps range.

  • H.264 compatibility

I'm having issues importing quicktime movies I exported from FCP with H.264 compression into DVD Studio Pro.
I exported them as 720p h.264, so they're not interlaced. I know the bitrate is fairly low.
is H.264 simply incompatible in any way, shape or form in DVD Studio pro 4?
If so, what's the best file format to export from FCP to use in DVD Studio pro? other than Animation codec... for quality?
I know I'm making a 480p SD DVD anyway so it probably doesn't matter, but I would like to preserve as much quality as possible.
    thanks.

might be highly compressed, but it's a heck of a lot better than mpeg2.
Your statement is irrelevant when discussing DVD creation. Yes, of course h.264 is a more efficient codec than MPEG-2; everyone knows that. However, since DVD-Video is MPEG-2, Eric is correct; it will have to be compressed again to conform to the DVD standard. And that will result in lost quality.

  • Apple TV - really not useful for streaming

I bought an Apple TV last week - I have 400GB of Apple Lossless audio files stored on my PC, and a number of TV shows in MPEG2 format, extracted from my Humax digital recorder.
The size of my media library means that syncing to the Apple TV's paltry 40GB HDD isn't an option, so I'm forced to use the ATV by streaming from iTunes.
First problem - whenever I shut down iTunes and turn off my PC (at night, for example) and restart it, ATV completely fails to be able to reconnect to the same library. Every time, I have to remove Apple TV from iTunes, go into the Sources menu on ATV, connect to iTunes, go back to my PC, enter the new passcode, and then streaming comes back up. This is, frankly, ludicrous. My Roku SoundBridge manages to remember a connection when the server PC shuts down - why can't ATV?
As I already have a SoundBridge, one of the main reasons for wanting an ATV was to get album art. But if you are streaming, ATV only seems to display album art that is embedded in each individual file - it can't make use of the iTunes album art feature, where artwork is stored separately to avoid bloat on the audio files.
Finally, the restricted choice of video codecs is ludicrous. I have video stored as DVD-standard MPEG2 program streams, but iTunes won't accept that, and QuickTime won't even convert it.
I wondered why, when I bought the ATV from the Apple Store in Bluewater, that the sales assistant told me, without my asking, that I had 14 days to bring it back in if I wasn't happy. I've never been told that in that past when buying anything - it does suggest a lack of confidence in the product. That said, I shall be taking advantage of it - the ATV is going back. I may buy another one in a few years when Apple have actually finished it...

    • MPEG-4 Part 10 (H.264) is in no way an inferior
quality format. It is in fact far superior to MPEG-2,
offering either smaller file size (better
compression) for the same quality or greater quality
for the same file size. It is the standard for HD-DVD
& BluRay, for most HD satellite services, & for most
terrestrial broadcasting (except in the US, where it
is being considered as an upgrade to MPEG-2 for
    ATSC).
If you are truly concerned about file size or
quality, this is the format you should be using, not
    MPEG-2.
A fair point - however, I do not believe that it is possible to convert MPEG-2 to MPEG-4/H.264 with no loss of quality. While MPEG-4 may well be a more efficient codec, not supporting native MPEG-2 results in lower quality DVD-sourced material, and I would contend that DVD is currently by far the largest source for content that people might want to display on their AppleTV.
    • Apple TV is not sold as a media server but as
iTunes for your TV. You seem annoyed that the product
isn't something it doesn't claim to be. This makes as
much sense as complaining that a car you bought can't
    fly.
Errr - no. I don't expect it to be a media server; I expect it to be a media client, which is what it is sold as. The fact that it ships with a limited size hard drive and then fails to offer full functionality as a client in a streaming system is my major complaint. It does indeed claim to be "iTunes for your TV", but what it actually is is "iTunes for your TV, as long as your combined audio and video library is no bigger than 30GB". (And yes, I do mean 30GB - it would appear that 10GB of the drive isn't actually usable for media files.)
    • Providing MPEG-2 support is a necessity for any
standard DVD player, & for that reason the cost of
its license is built into every player on the planet,
including those in computers. However, that license
only grants one right: to decode DVD content coming
from the player. To do anything else, you need a
license with more rights. If you don't like this
licensing arrangement, complain to the licensing
authority (& good luck with that), not to Apple. The
latter makes as much sense as complaining to Apple
    about Windows licensing arrangements.
Other vendors of competing products have included MPEG-2 codecs and (presumably) the appropriate license. It is technically possible to run the MPEG-2 codec on AppleTV, as hackers have already managed to do so. To avoid including this capability because Apple weren't willing to negotiate a license is ludicrous. The MPEG-2 codec is available from Apple as a QT plugin for $20 - an MPEG-2 license would not have added significantly to the cost of an Apple TV.
    • If you feel the Pinnacle ShowCenter 200 better
suits your needs, why not just buy it instead & skip
the rant? This is a support forum intended for help
with & discussion of the features of Apple TV. It is
a good resource if you are interested in pre-purchase
information or resolving post-purchase issues. It is
not a support forum for emotional release issues
(venting). There is nothing wrong with that -- in its
proper place, it's probably healthy -- but this just
    isn't that kind of place.
Fair point, but in that case, would someone like to correct either of my assumptions (if they are indeed incorrect):
    1. A streaming connection to AppleTV is broken to the point that it must be deleted and reinstated from scratch if the server PC is shut down and restarted.
    2. A streaming connection to AppleTV cannot display album art from the iTunes database unless that art is also embedded in every audio file streamed.
Nowhere in any of the publicity for AppleTV does it suggest that you get reduced functionality when streaming compared to when syncing, and yet on these two points, it is (as far as I can tell) deficient. If all I wanted was a 30GB media library connected to my TV, I'd have plugged in my iPod - if AppleTV does not offer full functionality in a streaming environment, I can't see what it's for, which is why I'm a little peeved.

  • FinalCut Pro and AVC-Intra

When is Apple going to release the AVC-Intra codec for FinalCutPro
    NAB 2007
    Panasonic AVC-Intra
AVC comes from MPEG-4 Part 10 H.264, now often referred to as just
AVC (Advanced Video Coding). AVC is about twice as efficient as MPEG-2, meaning that comparable HD video quality can be achieved at half the bitrate (AVC-Intra at 50Mbps = MPEG-2 Intra at 100Mbps). Panasonic states that AVC-Intra-50 achieves approx. the same compressed HD quality as their DVCPRO-HD (100Mbps). Their AVC-Intra-100 (100Mbps) achieves approx. the same compressed HD quality as Panasonic's famous master quality D5HD video tape recorder format. Thus, Panasonic in 2007 will offer two (2) truly professional intra-frame HD compression modes in their new HD camcorders: High quality ENG and broad market EFP with AVC-Intra-50 and network origination quality EFP with AVC-Intra-100.

Its against the forum's terms of use to speculate about future Apple developments. If anyone knew, they couldn't say. But don't worry ... you can always find out as soon as it's released or included in an update by checking here often (especially around NAB time).

  • H.264 part 10 with DMP 4400G Problems

We are using Final Cut Pro to export all our video content for our digital signage on our campus. We have tried numerous times to export an H.264 video with various settings and can't get any of them to work. Does anyone know what we could be doing wrong? • H.264 or MPEG 4???

I have a file converter for iPad movies - I have a choice of:
    H.264 or MPEG-4
    What's the difference? Thanks -

    In practical terms, none
    From Wikipedia
"The ITU-T H.264 standard and the ISO/IEC MPEG-4 AVC standard (formally, ISO/IEC 14496-10 - MPEG-4 Part 10, Advanced Video Coding) are jointly maintained so that they have identical technical content."

  • MPEG-4 in, H.264 out

Hi: I've heard that MPEG-4 is H.264 (not sure ?) ... If my Video starts in MPEG-4 and My final FCP or Compressor Export is H.264 is there a Format conversion in the process or is it untouched because it is the same (or very close) ? Thanks, MLR

H.264 is also known as MPEG-4 Part 10 or AVC but when Apple refers to an H.264 codec or encoding it's not the same as basic MPEG-4. Thus, when you export or convert a basic MPEG-4 video to H.264 you are going through an extra encoding step (i.e. there is a video data conversion). Whether you will notice much of a change depends upon the encoding quality and bitrate of the original and/or the result (thus, garbage in -- garbage out, etc.).
Usually when QuickTime can perform a lossless or in-place format change it will offer a pass-through option. You may see this option when you convert a QuickTime movie (.mov) to/from a native H.264 or MPEG-4 file container (such as a .mp4).

  • H.264 vs. MPEG-4

I've heard many things about both formats, but what are the distinct advantages and disadvantages of both formats? And in the end, which format would be best on my movies on my iPod? I have probably over 55GB of free space with all my music, photos, and other movies on it right now, so video quality is not an issue with me.

    A little more background:
Apple added H.264 video playback to their 5th Generation iPod on October 12, 2005. The new product will use this format, as well as MPEG-4 Part 2, for video playback. The video-enabled iPod will use the H.264 Baseline Profile with support of bit rates up to 768 kbit/s, image resolutions up to 320 x 240, and frame rates up to 30 frames per second.
The intent of H.264/AVC project has been to create a standard that would be capable of providing good video quality at bit rates that are substantially lower (e.g., half or less) than what previous standards would need (e.g., relative to MPEG-2, H.263, or MPEG-4 Part 2), and to do so without so much of an increase in complexity as to make the design impractical (excessively expensive) to implement.
