MPEG-4 wont fit on DVD

Hello,
I'm trying to burn a video in MPEG-4 format. file size is 1.01 G's .. using IDVD'08 on Leopard. all software up to date.. the program tells me that the video file is to big for the DVD.. when I looked in the project menu, the program reports the video size as 10 G's... I don't see how it can go from 1 to 10 G's...
Any ideas?
All help greatly appreciated .
TIA.
Oscar 

Consider this, one-hour of GB material is 13GB. iDVD will compress this to fit on one single layer DVD. Two-hours would be 26GB and iDVD will compress this to fit on one DVD. That is what iDVD does. You have a VERY, VERY compressed file (1GB=3-hours). This is NOT what iDVD works with. Therefore, iDVD must try and convert your compressed file into something it can work with and then compress that back again to DVD. That is how your little 1GB file can become 10GB or more. Keep in mind that you will lose quality during all of these conversions/compressions.

Ive created a report in landscape A4.  In the designer and on the webpage the report seems ok (except a horizontal line doesnt stretch completly across the page)
When I print it as a pdf  the report wont fit on the page, its too big.  The fonts are much larger than they are on screen.  Does anyone know what could be the problem ?

I don't know for sure, why, but you might try updating your PDF driver if there is a newer one. You don't say what version(s) of things you have - it might just not have a good mesh/fit when generating the PDF.
Other PDF settings to try might involve embedding fonts, or perhaps a change of typeface/font that is more standard? (try courier)
    Good luck

So like me, many verizon users in the US are excited to get their hands on a new iphone, i purchased a black and pink defender case from otterbox so ill have it when i get my iphone...well i started to do some research and found out that APPLE wanted to fix the pre-existing problem they experienced at AT&T of the antenna band on the bottom left hand corner and its ablity, when covered up by your hand, to lose service and drop calls. so Apple redesigned just the side as for the verizon iphone, the antenna is now at the top...pushing the volume buttons down more.....THIS CREATED THE PROBLEM OF THE OTTERBOX CASES NOT FITTING. I SPOKE WITH OTTERBOX CUSTOMER SERVICE ABOUT THE RELEASE OF THE NEW VERIZON CASE FOR THE IPHONE AND THEY SAID THEY WERE WORKING ON THE DESIGN AND THAT IT SHOULD BE FOR SALE IN THE UPCOMING MONTHS......DISSAPPOINTING...I KNOW! you would think, with their cases so high in demand, that they would have already released the cases before the iphone release...they would have made more money that way but hey...what do i know..lol

You appear to have a burner recognition problem that is manifesting itself when you try to do the burn to VCD in the Organizer 7 Slideshow Editor.
I will not get into the classical VCD (352 x 240) versus DVD (720 x 480) obvious considerations.
Your issue may go deeper than an Organizer VCD burn feature. Are you sure that you are not dealing with a Windows DVD/CD burner recognition issue rather than Organizer 7 Slideshow Editor VCD not recognizing your burner?
For troubleshooting purposes, can you or have you successfully burned one of your wmv files to DVD-VIDEO on DVD using something like Windows DVD maker on this same computer same burner if you can see the burner? Put another way, if you open to Computer to view your drives, is your DVD/CD drive displayed there?

Do you have the Windows DVD Maker included on your Windows 7 64 bit computer? If you do not know, in Search, please type in Windows DVD Maker and see if it is revealed.

  • My iMac 400 DV wont recognize a DVD

I recently got a iMac 400 DV (slot-loading). It has a DVD/CD combo. For some reason the mac recognizes a CD but wont recognize a DVD. I am using Panther 10.3.9. Any suggestions? Everytime I insert a DVD (original movie) it spins for a while (20 seconds) than spits it out.

    The 1990/2000 iMac DV 400MHz came with a DVD-ROM drive (not a 'Combo' drive - a 'Combo' drive is DVD-ROM and CD-RW). The 2001 iMac 400MHz came with a CD-ROM drive only.
I suggest you obtain a cleaning disc and try cleaning the drive.

  • MPEG-1 Encoding Specs for DVD

Wondering what the best encoding specs are for MPEG/MPEG-1 for a Standard DVD. Thanks.

You still need to verify how your client is going to be using this disk. The problem with MPEG1 is that you're not going to be creating a DVD. You're going to be making a DVD-ROM that contains video.
There really are no "best" settings for MPEG1. The default within Compressor is 240x360. If you need larger, you must duplicate one of the settings, rename it, and then modify it.

  • Is it possible to output to fit on DVD?

I have created a video in Premiere Pro and exported it to Encore and built menu's. The total length of the video is 2hrs & 8 minutes. Is there a way to output this to DVD to fit? maybe reducing quality of video or something? Thanks for your help.

Depends on the type of video file imported into encore. If it's anything other than mpeg-2, like an avi file, than you should be able to just use automatic settings. But you'll want to transcode anything you can before your main video file so it calculates disc size correctly. Transcode clips used for menu backgrounds, etc. before you transcode your main file in automatic. If you have already transcoded to mpeg-2 in premiere, re-transcoding might take a long time again or degrade the image too much.
In CS3 Encore, I've had trouble with jitttery motion with automatic setting, but that might just be my computer. Because I haven't found a solution I use manual settings and project is sometimes too large to fit on a disc. For these occasions I use another free download program called DVD Shrink. (Google it.) It is much quicker to run through that program for me than re-transcoding. Just export your project as a DVD Folder and use those files in DVD Shrink and it will make new ones in a temp folder of your choosing, plus it will burn a disc for you. Does it pretty quickly also. Plus, you can sometimes get away if you are slightly over with just shrinking your menu stuff and leaving your main video file alone. I also use a sharpen filter in the settings and I am very impressed with the results.

  • Compressed Project won't fit on DVD

I edited a FCP project that ended up timing at 1hr. 59 minutes, and 27 seconds.
I exported the project using Compressor, and chose my presets as MPEG-2 120min High Quality encode (choosing "All" for both video and audio).
I then brought this into DVD Studio Pro and proceeded to make the menus and chapters, etc.
First Question: I was surprised that the compressed audio and video were seperate (an aiff and then a m2v). Is that supposed to happen? Did I do something wrong since I had to add the aiff file seperately to the DVD?
Also, now that I have both on there, I'm being told it's too large to fit on the 4.5 GB DVD. My MPEG-2 file is 2.92 GB and my aiff file is 1.28 GB. Plus the templates are using some minimal space.
Is this because my project's too long? Or did I choose incorrect settings?
I then tried the fast encode because I thought the file would be smaller. That didn't work.
One more question! What kind of discs are compatible to burn in the super drives?
I had some TDKs, but those didn't work on another project I tried to burn.
    Thanks!
    Sally

It sounds like you're using Compressor 1 (or some variant, like 1.2). Please confirm if that's correct.
If that is the case, your fix might be an easy one. Locate a program called A.Pack on your machine (it should be in the Applications folder) and use it to create a Dolby Digital file.
If you use the .ac3 file that A.Pack creates, and delete the .aiff file from your DVDSP project, that should save you more than enough space to burn your project onto a standard DVD-R.
As for what kind of discs are best with your SuperDrive, that's a bit of a crapshoot (because different products lines from even a single manufacturer aren't guaranteed). But anyway, I've had great luck with Verbatim's DataLifePlus series (I usually get them from B&H).

  • Any way to compress an 18GB m2v file to fit 4GB DVD?

Hello all, the original post can be found here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2327129&start=0&tstart=0
I finally made my file and its way too big to fit on a DVD, is there any other compression I can do to get this to fit on a dvd, or possibly a dual layer disc? It took about 2 days to get this working file so if I have to start over I might cry a little any ideas? thanks

The simple answer is No, you can not fit 18GB of material on a DVD.
In a nut shell - a standard single layer DVD-5 disk will hold ~ 4.5 GB of data which effectively translates to ~2 hrs of video + ac3 audio at reasonable bit rates. You can hold more time but you have to reduce the bit rate of the video so low, the image quality will likely decrease to a level most may find problematic.
A dual layer DVD-9 disk will hold ~double the material of a DVD-5.
I have not read your other threads but, from this one, it appears you lack a fundamental understanding of how DVDs work. I'd suggest you start the the DVDSP Manual and read through all the basic background information as well as the getting started chapters. It is well written and very informative.

  • DVD wont play on DVD player after new super drive installed

I fried my burner and Apple put a new one in for me but now the movies I burn wont play on my DVD burners. Same media I've always had good fortune with. Works with my cheapy Acer but not the Pioneer. I need to send masters off for duplication and am not sure they will work with dups equiptment.
Is this a setting somewhere or is there a work around?

    Hi
Memorex - not good reputation here.
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard

    • iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Running a cleaning CD/DVD from time to time can help
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named: com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.

  • Mpeg-4 wont play in latest itunes

I converted some dvd files to mpeg-4, and it plays in windows media player, nero, my IPOD, etc, but NOT in Itunes/Quicktime (they both use the same player). In those two, audio comes out, but no video, just a black screen (I tried some trouble shooting from apple, i.e., disabling some directx features, but now only white screen).
Over a year ago I did the same encoding, and it gave me mpeg-4 files that still play in Itunes. In that player, if I click info, it displays "video codec: h.264" for the files that do play normally, and "video codec: mpeg-4" for the bad ones. I have the latest version of itunes/quicktime.
Can someone please help me with the heck is going on here? This is really frustrating...
    Thanks

  • Laptop wont eject cd/dvd

I just bought my g4-2149se from wal-mart and It wont eject my cd with the botton, nor when i go to the drive and select eject. It gives me an error message. Any help? or should I just take it back to wal-mart?

I guess if you just bought it, I would take it back but look for a small hold in the front of the DVD that you can stick a paper clip sized wire into.  That is made so you can manually eject a DVD.  Because the problem is not just getting a DVD out and doesn't really respond. I think you should return it.
