MPEG- MOV- iDVD- DVD-R- lost audio

[I've cross-posted this question to the iDVD 4 Discussion in the hope that, between the two, I'll find an answer.]
I'm new to this, so please bear with me if this is a stupid question:
Using the "Export" function on QuickTime 7 Pro, I converted a MPEG file to a MOV file so that I could use iDVD to burn it onto a DVD-R. I created the "Project" following the iDVD tutorial and successfully burned it to a DVD-R using my PowerBook's SuperDrive except that I lost the audio; I'm left with a silent movie. How do I get a "talkie"? (I suspect there's a very simple answer to this, but I'm such a novice . . . .) Thanks.
PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   SuperDrive; QuickTime 7.0.4 Pro; iDVD 4.0.1

MPEG Streamclip (free) can convert your .mpg file (with the audio) to DV Stream for use in video editing software like iMovie or to other QT formats.

  • Audio will preview in iDVD, dvd will play audio in puter but not player

Sharing a movie from iMovie 8.0.3 (all programs up to date) gives me a movie with audio I can preview in iDVD 7.0.4 again, all updated. When burned, the dvd will play with audio on the computer, but in an actual dvd player, it will not play audio, and the movie autoplays - to get the dvd menu I had to press "menu."
    Any thoughts?

If the burned disk plays ok in your computer, I would not suspect the software, but the DVD player that you are using. Try the disk in another player and see if it works. DVD players vary considerably in how they handle the audio tracks. I am especially sure that it is the player when you note that one must push 'menu' to get the iDVD menu to appear.
    Other suggestions:
Use a good recommended brand of DVD disk to burn your DVDs, such as Verbatim or Maxell. Memorex and TDK are not recommended here because their layers are thinner and they give inconsistent burns.
Be sure to use a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Also, most of us recommend that you make a disk image file of all your iDVD projects.
From within an iDVD project, select 'Save as Disk image' from the menu. The process looks like a burn, and takes just as long for encoding, but the end result is a disk image file, not a burned DVD disk.
You can then mount the disk image file and play it on your computer using the application DVD Player.
This disk image file is an exact replica of your iDVD project, with all the media data encoded within it. If it plays properly, you can use it to burn DVD disks now and for as long as you save the disk image file. It is a great backup for your projects. In fact, you can safely move, change or delete the original iDVD project and the original iMovie used in it without losing the ability to burn a disk of your project later.
An iDVD project, on the other hand, is a shell container that points to the media used in it, but does not actually keep those files in it. iDVD pulls the media for the encoding/burn, but the media stay where they are originally located. If you want to save all your iDVD projects, you have to save all the media precisely as it was when the project was created or iDVD will be unable to find it to open the project.
Many have been keenly disappointed to learn that their projects are gone because they saved only the iDVD project and deleted all the other media.
However, with an disk image file encoded with the media, the original iDVD project and iMovies used in it can be safely deleted.

  • MPEG movie files converting to another format for iDVD

    Hey,
Friend of mine recorded video of a concert. The files from her memory stick are in MPEG movie format.
I burned them from the memory stick to a disc. Now I'm trying to insert one of these MPEG movie files to a current iDVD dvd project. BUT for some reason or another it is not letting me.
Could someone please let me know how to take a MPEG movie file and insert it into a iDVD project.

Ive not actually tried protected iTunes Store files with this solution so not sure if it works (if not, yes, you would need to burn them to Audio CD and re-impot them unprotected.)
AACs are compatible with the PSP as-is however, it's just the PSP does not like the .m4a file extension. Simply renaming the extension to .mp4 will address this.
On a PC, you can create a batch file on your PSP memory stick with the following command:
    rename *.m4a *.mp4
Run this batch file after copying your iTunes AACs to the memory stick and they will work fine.
I'm sure the same can be achieved on a Mac with AppleScript or Automater, I don't have experience with those to achieve the same results though - perhaps someone could create a rename multiple files example?

  • How can I burn an mpeg onto a DVD without having to use IDVD or IMovie?

So I've got a few jpg's and mpeg's that I would like to burn for PC friends, but the only way I can figure out how to get these onto a CD or DVD is by using IDVD or IMovie with my IMac. Is there a way around this? Why doesn't a blank DVD or CD icon come up on the desktop once inserted so that I can simply drag and drop my photos and short movies to it to be burned accordingly? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for responding Dave, but this option doesn't
seem to appear in the preferences of IDVD, DVD
Player, or Quicktime. It seems strange that the only
way I can burn a movie is to create a new IMovie
project and and then burn it via IDVD. This is a
huge hassle when all I want is a few short videos in
no particular order saved on a CD or DVD. My CD
player doesn't seem to be listed separately and is
tied into Itunes. Isn't ILife suppose to make
things easier? Thanks for your help.

  • No Audio on MPEG Movies with 7.1.5

I'm sure there is a reason for this, but maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I seemed to have lost all audio output in QT for MPEG movies only. QT movies play fine, WMV movies play fine through Flip4Mac, but MPEG movies are acting really buggy and have now lost sound.
    Any ideas?

I'm not really sure what kind of MPEG movie they are. How would you tell?Normally you would open the movie in the QT Player and then select the "Show Movie Info" Window Option to see what format is listed. "Muxed" format normally refers to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files. H.264 and MPEG-4 movie will usually list both their video and their audio compression format. If codecs are not shown, then the compression format(s) may not be QT compatible. Your original message implies that these files formerly played on you system. If true, then have you removed or added any QT components recently or done anything that might have modified your audio settings?

  • HT1095 burn my movie to DVD without iDVD

How do I burn my movie to DVD? I bought a Macpro last November and there's no iDVD.

Yes, there are programs that will put a movie on a DVD.   I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, and others.  None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie.
With iDVD you can easily and quickly create DVDs with menus and graphics almost on the level of what Hollywood can do.
IDVD is easy to get. It is available on disk as part of iLife 11.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

  • Slide Show from Fotomagico to .mov to DVD using iDVD 08

I used to make slide shows using analogue equipment (multiple slide projectors and electronic controlled slide changes involving fading and timing). These slideshows were projected onto a large screen (2m * 2m). With the introduction of large high definition TV screens and advanced display options it is natural to aim for this media. I use Fotomagico to develop slideshows and aim for quality high definition and smooth transitions (pan, zoom, fade). As long as I use the Fotomagico for screening transitions are smooth but once I take the show thru the conversion process (part of Fotomagico) to make .mov files for QuickTime or that matter for iDVD, pan/zooms may or may not come out jerky on the screen be that on the computer screen or the TV. However this never happens when using "Front Row". Is it possible that Quicktime and iDVD (08) do not make proper use of hardware resources available? Is there any software that would not cost me an arm and a leg that would overcome this problem? My system is a Mac Pro Q-Core 2.8 GHz and 6 GB of RAM and I have 200 GB HDrive available. One of the offending pictures has 344 KB with an aspect ratio of 3.6 taking 12 seconds for the pan (screening the picture from let to right in slow motion) and increasing the screening of one image to 20 second may reduce the jerky motion slightly. Fotomagico staff is aware of that problem that will not occur as long as the show is screened using Fotomagico - of course the whole exercise is to bring a show to anyone using DVD players and TV screens. I am highly suspicious of QuickTime and iDVD since shows play ok using "Front Row". Any suggestions or questions?

What am I missing? How come DVD recorders can record and play back good to very good resolution and motion in HD coming from TV broadcasts or for that matter coming from professionally made DVDs?
Maybe I left something unexplained in my post: Slideshows developed with Fotomagico and transferred to .MOV format and then recorded on DVD (using iDVD) in 1920*1080 are coming out quite good on my large screen TV (LG DLP 52" 1280*720p) and the same is true playing the .MOV file on the Mac or a PC. I do not use a projector for play back.
It is only when it comes to PAN/ZOOM motions that the display can become jerky. During the translation from Fotomagico to .MOV format I am using the best resolution and compression available to me. I am aware that during the translation (authoring?) massive amounts of data have to be processed to generate the illusion of a slowly moving picture passing across the TV (monitor) screen especially so considering the wide screen (16:9) format.
I am new to making movies for DVDs and I like to learn and why not from the best; any help with my problem is much welcomed and I apologise if I don't use the proper terms or if I bark up the wrong tree.

I'm guessing then, that you made this question from your iPhone, since you say the iPad has no Wi-Fi? You need to log into your iTunes account and update your financial information, however you can get into the iTunes Store.

  • IDVD is not on my system and I cannot download it from the App store.  How Do I burn my home movies to DVD?

iDVD is not in my macBook pro and I need an iDVD or a good program to burn my home movies on DVD with menus. I cannot download iDVD or any other professional programs like DVD Studioor ... from App store. Please help me how do I burn my short films to DVD? Also please tell me any other free programs alternate it for burn DVD with putting menus.

    Hi
iDVD is not or never been free !
there are up-dates but still You need the original iDVD v. 7.x.x to use them.
Best of program - not sold by Apple any more but on Amazon or e-bay in boxed versions of iLife 11
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on Internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

  • No audio when i import an mpeg movie to finalcut

    Hello everyone
i am trying to import am mpeg movie file
when i import to final cut pro i see the footage but there is no audio?
When i play the files outside of finalcut i see and hear the clips
    Any suggestions?
    thanks

Open it in MPEG Streamclip and export it as a video and audio codec that matches an easy set up.

Or use the original footage rather than the MPEG file.

  • Extractind audio from MPEG Movie

I have a MPEG Movie of a speaker at a conference. I would like to be able to listen to the speach via my iPod. I do not have movie capabilities on my iPod, so I need to extract the audio only from the file in order to import it into my iPod. I have searched back thru the discussion db but I can't find an answer. I apologize in advance if this has been previously discussed. Thanks in advance

Download ffmpegx at http://www.ffmpegx.com/ It is shareware with no limitations but don't forget to reward the developer if you find it useful.
This is a fantastic app for converting all types of audio and video files. Never tried the mpeg to mp3 conversion until now. Tested it out for you and it works great. Hope this helps.

  • Added a song to a movie in imovie and lost all audio across all clips. Any help?

I added a song to a movie in imovie and lost all audio from several clips. Removed the song and audio is still gone. How can I regain original audio once lost after adding song to imovie?

The audio should still be there.  Select a clip and open the Inspector to the Audio Tab and turn the volume up to 100%.
