MPEG movies that played on my G4 won't open.

Since getting my new Mac Pro, I am having trouble playing MPEG movies. I had QT Pro and the QT 6 MPEG-2 PLayback Component on my previous machine. (G4 - OS 10.3.9) I installed the Playback Component on this machine. And I entered my Pro registration for QT 7.1.3 on this machine. So I am running QT 7 Pro. And I see the MPEG-2 Playback Component in my Sys-Lib-QT folder. But there are movies that will not play; yet, oddly, if I open my older QT 6.5.2 (still sitting on my hard drive) it does play the file. Can anyone help me understand this?

Ned (and anyone else who wants a laugh)
Thanks for the tip. Really! Because I cannot seem to get anyone at Apple to actually READ my notes to them. They keep answering questions I do not ask, and not answering questions I do ask.
For anyone interested in the absurd, here is a running thread of my dialog with them regards this issue - starting with my original note to Apple:
Me to Apple:
Support Subject : Post-Purchase Sub Issue: Comments:
My QT MPEG2 Playback Component does not work with my new MacPro. I originally purchased QT 6 Pro; then purchsed new QT7 Pro. And I purchased QT 6 MPEG-2 PLAYBACK-MAC OS X. But this is no longer working since I just got a new Mac Pro. In the Discussion forums I see that I could be able to download an updated version for my new MacPro but my original purchase is not even listed. Here is my receipt. How do I get the Playback Component for QT 7; OS 10.4.7, for the Mac Pro?
Thanks

Me to Apple:
Thank you for replying but your reply does not address my question. I don't want to go back to QT 6. I have QT 7 Pro.
I have the QT MPEG 2 Playback component but it does not work with my QT 7. I also now have a new Mac Pro. So, again, my question is, where and how can I download the proper version of the QT MPEG 2 Playback Component, for QT 7 and for the Mac Pro?
Thank you
George V

Me to Apple:
This is good news. I appreciate it. But I cannot find the version for QT 7 Pro. When I follow links and go to the Apple Store, I see this:
Just added to your cart
QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback - Mac OS X
But is this the same one that I already have - version 6.5? Or is it the newer one that I now need for my new QT 7 Pro (and for the Mac Pro - Intel)?

  • Anybody find cause/fix for movies that play one day and not another?

I have a lot of movies. I find that at times I go back to watch a movie I have watched before and it errors saying cannot play movie, unrecognized format. Though I have watched it before on the AppleTV without issue.
I try again maybe a week later and it works. Then later, others won't play.
Very frustrating when I know the movie works as I have watched it before.
So, just curious if anybody else has seen this and knows why or at least a quick fix to get it to work. Rebooting the ATV and/or computer doesn't work.

It happens (when it does, as mentioned, doesn't always have issue) when streaming a movie.
eg: I get new movie. I have sync options to sync 5 most recent unwatched movies and 10 most recent unwatched tv shows and all music.
So new movie is on ATV. I watch. All is good.
When done ATV does it's thing and takes it off and brings over the next most recent to keep my count at 5 local to the ATV.
Later I want to watch again when wife gets home or something. Here is when sometimes I can watch (it streams) and other times (just happening more and more lately) it will say unrecognized format.
Yet if I go pick another movie that I know is not local to the ATV thus will stream, it will work. Just random various movies won't.
If I go to iTunes and mark one that isn't playing as unwatched (and it was more recent than another on the ATV) then it will sync over to the ATV and be local again and play fine again.
Thing is it doesn't happen all the time. Some stuff will stream fine, other times won't. Real pain and has only been getting worse lately.
Guess I know that the error message of "unrecognized format" is just wrong and it that must be some general message because I know it is in right format.

You can turn mail off in the settings but then you can't use it for anything, including the "test" that you want to perform.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Account Name>Mail>Off. That totally turns off the mail account.
As long as mail is turned on and you launch the app, it will look for an download new mail.

  • Want to burn a movie that plays in D.V.D. player from iMovie.

Want to burn a movie I made in iMovie to play on D.V.D. player....

    I thought so.
Apple insists that the entire world has access to fast broadband and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. That worked for some, but is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple. Also, you can complain bitterly here, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between using iCloud and burning DVDs:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced:  http://www.gizmag.com/windows-8-no-dvd-playback/22443/
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that.

  • H.264 videos that played in Firefox 34 won't play in Firefox 35.0

We host a ton of h.264 videos in the mp4 container displayed through JW Player. We had zero problems with Firefox 34 and earlier playing these videos, the video is H.264 and the audio is AAC, the whole thing is around 500 kbit/s.
They play fine on Firefox 34, Chrome and IE but after updating to Firefox 35.0 we get an error: "Error loading media: File could not be played".
We have found a fix to get them to work in the about:config, switching "media.fragmented-mp4.enabled" to false OR switching "media.fragmented-mp4.exposed" to false will allow our videos to play. Single file mp4's will also begin to download where before we would get a "Video can't be played because the file is corrupt."
Alternatively for Mac users if they just set media.apple.mp4.enabled to False it also works fine.
Non h.264 mp4 videos will play fine.
Here is a playlist that won't play: http://media.vineyardinstitute.org/other/vi_announcement/firefox-test.html
Here is the single video file: http://media.vineyardinstitute.org/other/vi_announcement/05_kingdom_theology.mp4
Is there anything I can change on either the playlist or the video files to get this to work? Why would the h.264 files that worked in Firefox 34 NOT work in 35? I will not be able to re-encode all of the videos, it would take me months. Is this a bug with Firefox?
Also I have tried this in safe mode, tried with every plugin deactivated, I have uninstalled Flash and the videos would not play as well as reinstalling a new version of Flash and a fresh copy of Firefox 35.0
Any help would be much appreciated, we are currently directing all of our users away from Firefox till we get this resolved.
    Thanks,
    Kyle

Do you have H.264 codec enabled in the plugins list of Firefox?
Does this happen in the most recent version of JWplayer?

In that one there were two errors: needed a higher version of Flash installed and the codec issue. As you mentioned this had been narrowed down to the codec of the mp4 file. And this codec is added with the default cisco h.264 player. [https://gigaom.com/2014/10/14/h-264-support-arrives-in-firefox-thanks-to-cisco-but-h-264-web-videos-still-wont-play/]

  • HD Movies that I bought in iTunes won't fully download to my IMAC.

Life of PI for example always stops a 1.15gb and won't go any further, just shows as downloading.  I have no limits with my ISP and they said there is no problem on the line.  I have asked Apple support and they don't know.  They refunded some movies but older ones they won't.  My line is slow but it should download eventually.  I've tried deleting and redoing everything and it always stops a 1.15gb - very frustrating as I wanted to stream to my apple TV.

User "Bronyaur" from California correctly answered this question on 5 February 2006:
"had the same issue. Videos that were on my iPod and working fine started disappearing one by one - after the recent round of updates to Mac OS X, iTunes, and QuickTime.
The solution is to select the video in your iTunes library, go to the Advanced menu and choose "Convert Selection for iPod". iTunes suddenly didn't like whatever I used to convert them before, but anything converted using iTunes -after the updates - worked fine.
For what it's worth, I just ripped a DVD using MactheRipper, then used Forty-TwoDVD-VXPlus to encode it for the iPod and it worked perfectly. I didn't have to use iTunes to re-encode it.
Oops. I just went back and saw that you're using Windows, so MTR and the other program won't work for you, but the built-in iTunes encoder should do the trick. "

  • How To Add a Movie that plays automatically?

I used iMovie to create an animated logo - it's just some text that fades in with my name on it. I want to be able to add this short "movie" to my iWeb page so that when someone goes to my web site, my logo/name fades in automatically on the home page. However, when I try adding the movie, iWeb puts play controls so that someone has to press play in order to watch the logo fade in.
Is there a way that I can have my movie of my logo/name automatically play when someone opens my web page?

Select the movie in iWeb and go to the Inspector/Quicktime pane. There you can set it to autoplay, loop and/or hide the controller.

  • Just bought a dell pc with windows 8. on my old pc (vista) i would right click a movie (in itunes format) and say open with itunes and it would play. Now it won't open in itunes and it just CRASHES. HELP PLEASE. is there a glitch with win 8???

okay not sure how this works so here i go again.
Okay i bought a dell pc with windows 8 (big mistake) i downloaded itunes and from my external hard drive, right clicked a movie file (in ipad format, because this worked in vista on my old laptop) and it will not go into itunes. And itunes keeps crashing. Is there a glitch with win 8 and itunes ? I never had this prob with vista. I would right click a file and say open with itunes and poof it goes in the library. Please help before i throw this thing out the window! OH newest itunes is what i have installed.

Take a look at this MBP, a refurbished unit.  Don't let the late 2011 release date put you off.  For about  $500 less than an equivalent 'new' one with similar specifications you get a quad core CPU and excellent graphics.  As Steve359 mentioned, this can be upgraded if the need arises and has the same warranty as a 'new' one
I would not be surprised that these may actually be 'new' MBPs due to the length of time that they have been replaced by the current generation.  I purchased a 17" model about 5 weeks ago, and a serial number check suggests that it is 9 weeks old.

  • While trying to open a favorite webpage, all that comes up is a list of Downloads and a and a box that says Notepad. It won't open the page. How do I get it to go directly to the page I'm trying to open?

I simply can't open one of my favorite websites. I click on it and first comes up a box with a list of downloads ( all from the same site) . When I click on one from the list, I get a box that from Notepad with a bunch of writing that I have no idea what it is.
I believe while trying to get it open in the first place I checked the box that said... "open from here from now on" or something similar. The two other first options I was given didn't open it.
