MPEG playback/editing in CS4 terribly broken.

I have a Sony DSC-T200 camera (still camera, but shoots crappy video too--Bonus!), and I've never had trouble cutting the MPEG files it produces in Premiere before. Now, with CS4, even playback of these files in Premiere doesn't work correctly; sometimes it jumps back to previous frames, sometimes it just goes totally crazy, and the audio and video get out of step. I have the latest updates installed.
Rendering the timeline results in the same glitches being in the final product, too. This happens even without any cutting, effects, or anything. Just drag MPEG to timeline and it's already broken.
The only solution I've found is to convert the MPEG first to AVI using, e.g., Corel Video Studio (or anything non-Adobe), which doesn't suffer from this bug. The resultant AVI then behaves well in Premiere.
D'oh!
Cheers,
Aaron

@Aaron:
While this may not be the answer to your problem, one thing to try would be to check your project's Sequence\Settings. CS4 works a little differently and this change seems to be causing confusion. The other would be to use a program called GSpot to check your camera's MPEG codec against Premiere's MPEG codec.

@Harm:
To call premiere Pro/AME CS4 a Porsche is even more ludicrous!!!
Harm, why don't you get a life and stop posting here if you have nothing positive to contribute but can only put people down.
There are numerous experienced people coming to this forum to voice their complaints and dissatisfaction with CS4 and all you do is naysay their experiences without giving any possible solutions to their problems.
There are also inexperienced users who would appreciate some guidance as they wrestle with problems that do not make sense to them.
Unless you are willing to actually attempt to give some assistance that is meaningful, try not to make everyone feel as though they are stupid and shouldn't bother coming to this forum, just keep your opinionated comments to yourself.
I don't know you or your history here and perhaps you have been a solid contributor for a long time, but perhaps also you have grown tired of answering the same "stupid" OE questions again and again. If that's the case, then perhaps it's time for you to rethink your relationship with this forum as your present attitude of snide putdowns is, IMHO, tiresome, boring, ineffectual and inappropriate.

  • Quality of .nef LR files Degrading after Edited in CS4 and saved as .tif?

After I edit a .nef picture in LR, I right click  and select "edit in CS4".  I do my edits in CS4 (usually cloning) and I choose to save the image in CS4, it automatically appears as a .tif in Lightroom with the same rating/color coding that I gave to the original .nef Lightroom file that I decided to edit in CS4.
But, in the .tif in LR, I lose some of the edits to the .nef picture that I did in Lightroom.  I am noticing the pictures are lighter and contrast and darks are lighter.  I feel like the quality is degraded too and looks weird.
Anyone else experience this and do you have any advice?  Thanks so much!

Problem solved I think.  The Photoshop update I have blowing off for a couple of weeks seems to have fixed it.  There was an update in the bundle I downloaded for camera raw 5.7(?) and I'm guessing that is what the problem was...  Fingers crossed this never happens again.  Thanks!!!

  • Photo Edit in CS4 not working

    Hello,
    THE SETUP
I have LR 3.3 and PS CS 4 Version 11.0.2 on a Mac running OS X.6.7.
My "About Lightroom" screen reports the presence of Camera Raw 6.3.
In my LR preferences under "External Editing" tab, I have the option to "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS4" as PSD / sRGB / 16 bit / rez 300. There is no "Additional External Editor" present.
I have installed in Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS4/File Formats the Camera Raw Plug-in version 5.7. When I choose Photoshop>About Plugin>Camera Raw I see that CR version 5.7.0.213 is present.
    THE PROBLEM
When I select photo(s) [CR2 file(s)] in LR3 and choose Photo>Edit in> none of the external edit-in-Photoshop options work. First, I get a message saying "This version of Lightroom may require the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in version 6.3 for full compatibility."
I resent this suggestion, since that version of Camera Raw only works with CS5.
When I click "Open Anyway," PS opens and loads, but that's it. None of the images from LR appear.
I get the same (non)-results with all of the options (edit in CS4, HDR, panorama, smart object, etc.) under "Photo>Edit In." Photoshop launches, but no image appears.
The only way I can get a photo to open in PS from within LR is to choose Photo>Edit in>Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS4, and then when the warning dialog comes up about the Camera Raw plug-in version, click "Render in Lightroom." When I do that, LR renders the image and it opens in CS4. But that doesn't help me do what I really want to do, which is to select bracketed exposures in LR, merge them to HDR in CS4, and save them back to LR.
I have searched for help on this and come up dry. I did find this http://www.lightroomforums.net/showthread.php?9974-Open-as-layers-in-Photoshop-command-not -working, but I reinstalled the CR 5.7 plug-in as described and saw no change.
Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Lr 3.3 and CS4 are not fully compatible so your experience is the result of that.
You will have to bite the bullet and upgrade to CS5 if you dont want to "Render in LR".
I've worked for quite a while with LR 3 and CS3 and experienced similar problems - the only way out is that you select "Render in LR".
It's not such a big deal. When you select "Render in LR", Lr creates the psd that then opens in CS4.
With CS5 it works this way: The RAW file opens in CS5 but when you save in CS5 a psd is generated.

  • Faces issue when selecting 'edit with CS4' (or any other external editor)

Ok, so I have a work flow where I effectively use Nik Plugins. I have the complete set so that i can use them in Aperture and CS4. I correct exposure and white balance and crop in Aperture but then have automators set up in CS4 to apply Nik plugin effects via a batch change process ie no manual adjustments needed, start the batch and come back 20 mins later. Anyway thats somewhat irrelevant....
Once stage one is done in Aperture I select faces and see that all looks fine. Suggestions appear over faces etc as you'd expect. BUT if I then select edit with CS4 (via right click) on that image it creates a duplicate image (as its non-destructive) and opens it in CS4. Fine. But if you go in to Aperture the faces on this duplicate image are now all messed up. They are not at all over peoples faces but seemingly in random places. Right click and selecting detect faces does nothing. So in summary if I edit anything with CS4 and hit save so that the changes appear in Aperture then hit faces to tag people I have to effectively start from scratch and delete all the faces (not over peoples faces) and add new faces.
The best way to illustrate this is with screenshots. See this link for 2 screenshots of the issue. http://adamlewis.zenfolio.com/screenshot
Can someone else confirm they have this issue at all first off to see if it is a specific issue to myself or a generic Aperture issue?
After that I guess we can proceed with troubleshooting and solutions.
PS I have repaired my library and rebuilt it and have upgraded Aperture to the latest 3.2.2 (released today / yesterday but note the issue was found under 3.2.1 so its not a 3.2.2 specific issue).

Maybe I should have made it clearer in my original post. The 1st paragraph was just for colour. The fact of using Nik has nothing to do with the issue. The below quote is the issue:
"Suggestions appear over faces etc as you'd expect. BUT if I then select edit with CS4 (via right click) on that image it creates a duplicate image (as its non-destructive) and opens it in CS4. Fine. But if you go in to Aperture the faces on this duplicate image are now all messed up. They are not at all over peoples faces but seemingly in random places."
Thus the issue is generated by merely selecting Edit with CS4. ie no editing done in CS4 and not even saved in CS4. Just selecting edit with CS4 in Aperture creates the duplicate image in Aperture (and sends it to CS4 but lets assume we do nothing with it there at all) but creates a duplicate with face tags in the wrong places.
After further investigation I changed my external editing software option in preferences to Pixelmator and the same issue occurs.
So to replicate the issue in my place there are 2 simple steps that I need to make (and would like tested by someone else):
    1. Tag some peoples faces in an Aperture image
    2. Select edit with (any external editor)
Then go back in to Aperture (immediately) and select faces on the duplicate image created and see if the faces are in the correct position.
Note I have my external editor set to TIFF 8 Bit 300dpi using Adobe RGB colour space.
    Thanks for your time.

    Steve,
I appreciate your answer.  While it might work, I'm a bit hesitant to remove the other programs as a possible solution since they are all currently working.
With Acrobat 9 Pro failing with the OS 10.7 upgrade, I'm hoping that there is a less severe solution.
Since the trigger appears to be 10.7 and may have something to do with the discontinued support of Rosetta, I could be spending a few hours working on a reinstall without a change.  Yes, it might work.  The "might" is the part that makes me hesitate.
Is anyone else out there on OS 10.7 and running Acrobat 9 Pro?  Any issues with anyone else?
Thanks Steve.  I do appreciate your offering a solution.  I may end up trying it if nothing else comes together.

  • LR 2.2 edit in CS4 Failure

I am running LR 2.2 and I have been running PS CS2 with no trouble. I recently upgraded to CS4 Design premium. Now the main external editor in LR2.2 has been set to CS4. So when I right click on an image and select edit in->CS4, I got the "you may need to upgrade to ACR5.2" complaint. To rectify this, I downloaded all the updates and installed them, for all of CS4 Design Premium. Now when I attempt to edit in PS CS4, nothing happens. Well, if CS4 is not running, it launches it, but no PSD file is created, so the image never opens in CS4.
    What now?

You should manually run the ACR 5.2 installer. There was a bug in there that made it not actually install if you used the automatic update.

    Windows: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4220

  • Edit in Cs4 -or-Edit in PS.exe(2nd editor)

Is it only when the lens Correction develop module section has been used that using CS4 as the second external editor has to be used?
If that section has not been used and I automatically click on Edit in Cs4 (no pop up choice box) the appearance in CS4 looks to me as though it has retained the global adjustments and any brush adjustments. Is this wishful thinking?
I have to retrain my brain paths to use the second external editor  Photoshop.exe (64bit) editor and it doesn't always happen.
    Rose

Other than the lens corrections, everything else is *almost* identical using CS4/5.7.  Unless you're pixel peeping, you probably won't notice any difference.  I think it was just sharpening halos that were tweaked, from memory.

  • LR will not allow edit in cs4

I recently moved to a new computer with W-7. I installed CS4 and Lr 2.6 fresh on the computer. When I select edit in cs4 from LR I get a message that says cs4 can not be opened. I can open cs4 directly and edit pics but can not save them to LR. I also tried to download LR2.7 and it came in as a separate program called LR2.7-64bit. If I try to open this program I get the same message as above. I still get reminders from LR2.6 to download 2.7 update. To further complicate the issue, I can not open cs4 64 bit at all, only cs4 32 bit. Any body have any ideas. Adobe has been working on this for 2 weeks and can not solve the problem

Charlie, you have been most helpful. I am getting close to a full solution. To answer your last question, no i have no plug-ins installed at this point. I did change the properties settings to allow full control to adminstrators, this was not on for some reason. Now when I use LR 2.6 or 2.7 it will open cs4 64 bit as the default from the edit in... menu. However before the cs4 will open I get a permission request from user account control to allow the program to make changes, when i click yes cs4 opens and works. i have checked all the user account settings and they seem in order and no other program does this. Is there another setting in cs4 that I should look at?
One other interesting fact. I checked to see if the security certificate on cs4 was up to date and it is not. This may be the reason for the permission request. So I went to update cs4 from the help menu and I can not access the adobe site from either 32 or 64 bit cs4, I can from both LR versions.

  • Editing with CS4 troubles

I have a photo that I'm trying to edit with Photoshop CS4.  I have been having trouble saving the file when finished.  My problem:  Saved photos would not appear in Elements after closing and saving in CS4.  Sometimes the thumbnail would appear, but the actual photo would be "missing".  The edited photo would not even be in Windows explorer.  I searched the forums and found others with this and similar issues.  My latest attempt was to flatten the image before saving, which saved as jpeg rather than psd.  Now the photo remains locked in Elements with the "Edit in progress"  I have closed CS4.  I tried reopening the file in CS4, but the Edit with CS4 is now greyed out.
I have been struggling with this for 2 days.  Why is this so difficult?  What am I doing wrong?
    I have Vista 64.  I am using Elements 7 and Photoshop CS4 64 bit
    Jason

I have also tried running both programs "as administrator" - this made no change.  For some reason the file is not saving correctly.  The file goes "missing" everytime.

  • NewTek Tricaster MPEG 2 with Premiere CS4

Just curious if anyone on here has uses or is using the NewTek Tricaster and if so what are you doing with the MPEG 2 files that it records to get a good looking DVD?
The Tricaster records footage in MPEG 2.  It has two different settings to record with.  Standard MPEG 2 and Studio Profile.  Both are "I" frame only recordings and Studio is 4:2:2.  I had read that the Studio version is not compatible with all NLE and that the standard version is much more compatible and is supposed to give you at least DV quality.  We had just gotten our Tricaster about a month ago, and I have been messing around with it trying to get as much figured out as possible before our first event with it, which was this past weekend.  I had tried recording in both the Standard and Studio Profiles and imported both into premiere without much issue.  Both looked good on monitors inside of Premiere and I left it at that.
Our first event that I used the Tricaster with was a Highschool graduation with 3 cameras that was being streamed to the internet and then all 250 students are getting a copy of the program on DVD.  I recorded it with the standard profile and checked it out after the event and it all looked good.  Our second event with it was the next day and since we were not delivering the content on DVD to the client I recorded it with the Studio profile just to try it out.  Much to my surprise on Monday when I burned the DVD from the graduation (recorded with standard MPEG 2) it looked very soft and not suitable to deliver to all the students.  I do not have the exact setting that I used since I am not at my office right now but the basic workflow is as follows.
    1.  Moved the MPEG files from the tricaster to my edit computer via an external drive.
    2.  Created a new Premiere Pro Project
    3.  Sequences settings were set to Desktop, MPEG 2 (ofter specifics I cannot remember)
    4.  Dropped in my timeline
    5.  Trimmed start and end.
    6.  Export MPEG 2 DVD (NTSC High Quality Preset), Quality changed to 5, Constand Bit Rate of 7 Mbps.
    7.  Import into a new Encore Project, set chapters every 5 min, built a DVD Image
    8.  Burn the DVD with Image Burn.
The DVD is really bad.  I just could not pass this out to anyone.  The closeup shots look OK, not great but OK.  Any wide shots look really bad.  I have not been able to come up with any combination of settings to get the DVD to look any better.  I did not have a ton of time to mess with it on Monday and plan on trying some other things next week when I am back in the office.
Then I tried the other program that was recorded with the Studio Profile MPEG 2.  The first attemp all the movement looked strobed.  Any movement had studder.  I tried several different things to get this to look good and I "Think" what I did when I finally got a good looking DVD was in my timline in Premiere I set it to "Interlace Consectutive Frames" and then exported my MPEG 2 DVD files.  It does not make sense to me why that made any difference since it is a inlerlaced format to start with, but what ever it takes to get it to look right I guess.
If you have any interest in reading what NewTek says about the MPEG formats you can see it at.
    http://www.newtek.com/faq/index.php?primary=3D%20Arsenal&question=408
If any of you are using the Tricaster and can get good looking DVD's after recording with the Standard MPEG 2 format please let me know your workflow.  I would really like to avoid having to re-edit this graduation.
I am going to be using the Tricaster for a college graduation Wed thru Fri and I will be recording it to the Studio Profile, since it appears that I can get a good looking DVD with that, but I will also be recording to outside recorders (both to Tape and to a HDD) until I can get this Tricaster MPEG 2 stuff figured out.
    Thanks
    Phil

Bottom line is the mainconcept mpeg encoder that is licensed into CS4 is garbage, it looks terrible with any settings. I have a tricaster also but never moved anything from it to premiere to encode to dvd. We render everything out from Premiere as an AVI and then use Grass Valley (canopus) Procoder to encode it to MPG for our broadcast server or DVD. It encodes much faster and looks twice as good. I can encode 3 hours of video in 14 minutes on it's high quality setting at 8mbit cbr.
here is an example, from left to right its CS4, CS5, CS5, Procoder.
one of the cs5 encodes had bad settings but the other one and procoder are much sharper then CS4.

  • HD Playback in Premiere CS4

OK, I don't want to sound like a broken record here.  I know there's plenty of problems with HD playback on CS4 regardless of the system you're on, but I can't see a reason why I'm still having stutter / slow playback on this system:
HP xw4300 Workstation with Windos XP SP3
    Nvidia Quadro FX 1400
    4 CPU 3.4GHz
RAID 0 with 2 new hitachi 7200 RPM 640GB drives
Speed test says average transfer for the RAID is 200MB/s, which (from what I understand) should be more than enough for an AVCHD 60i stream.  I also tried to capture via Blackmagic Intensity with the same results.
Some folks say it's CPU, others say drive speed, others say it's a problem with CS4 displaying interlaced footage.  I can see now why this is enough for some folks to switch to FCP.  RIght now, I'll take any answer.  Help!

OK, that makes you disk setup a lot clearer. From what you posted and what I read, you only had 2 Hitachi disks raided. Hence my remark and this shows again that we can only read what you and others write and if that information is incomplete, it may lead responders to draw false conclusions.
In a previous system I had a P4 3.4 GHz and while editing HDV was somewhat possible, it was taxing on the system, in my case causing temperature problems and PSU (power supply unit) problems. AVCHD is a completely different animal and despite what Adobe says, IMO requires at least a finely tuned i7 system that is somewhat OC'ed to around 3.6 GHZ to be able to edit that material in a decent way. You will still not get any real fluid, RT experience, but you can get by.
The problem is that AVCHD is a good delivery format, but a lousy format to edit. Salespeople do not know that, or do not tell prospective buyers that even though the cameras are relatively cheap, it is completely offset by the required investment in PC hardware to edit the material. IMO a Canon HV40 is a much better investment for around the same price as a comparable AVCHD camera, but much nicer on your PC budget and your editing experience.

  • AVCHD editing with CS4 works fine for me

I saw a couple of threads discussing AVCHD with CS4. I was waiting quite a long time for Premiere Pro CS4 - tried some other applications in the meantime with no success - but now I can say it was worth waiting. I have a Quad Core Intel 2,4 GHz, 8 GB RAM, Vista 64, NVIDIA 9600 and editing AVCHD footage (1920x1080 50i, PAL, captured in my Panasonic HDC-HS9 with highest quality level of ~17MBits/s) is really good, although some artifacts (some, not many) are shown in the preview monitor. But editing is really fast, preview-playback within Premiere also. I have to render effects but after rendering, they are also very smooth.
Exporting to BluRay either with MPEG-2-BluRay or H.264-BluRay in AME/Encore results in great picture quality(!), and I mean great quality. No artifacts at all. Watching the video on a FullHD beamer on a large screen is really a pleasure. It took me (or my PC) 6:30 hours to render a 01:05 hours FullHD AVCHD video to MPEG-2-BluRay (max. quality, ~35 MBits/s), with a lot of effect-filters like cross fades etc.
Rendering to H.264 is roughly 3-4 times slower than rendering MPEG-2, but I have only done it for a sample video of 1 minute. The resulting Blu-Ray was also perfect from picture quality point of view (no difference to MPEG-2 except the volume size of the resulting file), but my PC needed much more time to render 1 minute video using H.264-BluRay than it needs for a MPEG-2-BluRay export.

    >> Rendering to H.264 is roughly 3-4 times slower than rendering MPEG-2
...hmmm... this brings me back to the question I just asked elsewhere, which is: How does one properly export AVCHD to H.264 for Blu-Ray without loss of quality? Being as AVCHD *is* H.264, shouldn't the "transcoding" here basically amount to copying the existing data? I'd expect it to be WAYYYYY faster than exporting to MPEG-2 :-/
3-4 times slower than MPEG-2 would basically be a non-starter for me; I have a quad-core box with 4Gb RAM, and it took nearly 8 hours to turn 45 minutes of AVCHD (no effects) into DVD MPEG-2. Source and target were both interlaced. Strangely, exporting the interlaced footage as progressive cut the time by more than half :-? I didn't care for the choppiness of the result, however.
    Cheers,
    Aaron

  • Has Premiere Elements 12 fixed the jittery playback issues from CS4?

I use Premiere Pro CS4 to edit my videos. I shoot with a Canon DSLR the 60D and import the video files straight into Premiere Pro without the extra transcoding step. (too much trouble to transcode the raw video with every clip). I get jittery and jerky motion in the left hand Source Monitor, when I make my in and out point edits. It plays fine once I have made my edits and render them in the right hand Program Monitor. I have heard that this has been fixed in version CS5 and higher. I can't afford to buy the CS program again, but could purchase Premiere Elements 12 the latest version. Would the jittery playback still be there in the left Source Monitor window of Elements 12, or has it been fixed in all forward versions newer than CS4?
Also if there is a way to make the imported video play smooth in the Source Monitor directly from CS4, without the transcoding process, I would like to hear about that for sure. Thanks for your help guys. Ken in Toronto.

    Ken
I am surprised that the Premiere Pro group did not answer your Premiere Pro question before transferring your thread to the Premiere Elements Forum. The Premiere Pro question seems to be the immediate one. Your question seems to have been ignored by the Premiere Pro people
Also if there is a way to make the imported video play smooth in the Source Monitor directly from CS4, without the transcoding process, I would like to hear about that for sure.
An answer to that might avoid you having to get involved with a new program, Premiere Elements 12.
Nonetheless, I cannot offer you any guarantee about editing 60D footage in Premiere Elements 12. I would need lots of details of your specific video properties and computer environment to approach an answer. Your best and quickest answer will come from downloading and installing Premiere Elements 12 and determining its compatibility in your computer environment and if it meets your video editing needs.
