MPEG Problems

I have a project with multiple tracks each of them with very similar content. I rendered them all using the same settings and everything worked fine. All of the tracks were viewable. I needed to re-render all of the clips because i needed to add a graphic to each of them. I rendered all of the media again with the same settings. For some reason, all tracks play except for three of them. I can only play the first couple seconds before I see black in DVD SP4.
Whats funny is the clips play fine in QT outside of DVD SP4.
Dual 2 Ghz PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Render Settings: MPEG - Two Pass VBR Best min 7.7 mbps (16:9)

As it turns out, it was compressor that screwed up. I was looking over one of the mpegs and there is no sound track so i did not notice this at first, but people seemed to be moving a bit fast... At the end of the clips after they fade to black, there are some strange artifacts and then the beginning of the clips. Theres another 9 hours of rendering...

  • MPEG problem?

So I'm new to Macs, I just bought a 15 inch macbook pro today and am trying to learn how to use it properly, so far its great except for this one thing.
The problem I'm having involves MPEG files.
My dad recently took a trip to New York and took a lot of movies using a Sony camcorder (This was a while ago) so naturally I transferred the MPEG files to both an external hard drive and my PC. However I didn't have any good video editing software available on the PC, so I put the project on hold for a while (Until I got the Mac with iMovie and iDVD).
The problem is, whenever I try to open the MPEG files on my new Mac (which is connected to the external drive (Seagate FreeAgent 500GB - Via USB), the Mac just says "Cannot open this file - It is not a video file."
I thought that perhaps the files had been corrupted somehow, so I connected the external drive to my Windows PC and tried opening them there... They opened just fine.
I want to be able to edit these files using iMovie and burn a DVD of them, but this problem is getting in the way.
Could the problem be that I haven't updated iMovie or Quicktime to open these MPEG files on the Mac?
Again this is my first Mac so there's a possibility this could just be a noob question and I'm wasting your time.. but thanks for the help in advance.

It could be a missing Quicktime component (it's not clear what kind of 'MPEG' file you're trying to play).
Try installing Perian (it's free): http://perian.org/
Also, if you're a new user, you might want to install Flip4Mac (again, free): http://www.flip4mac.com/
And VLC player should cover anything else that doesn't play: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html
For importing into iMovie, note that iMovie '08 "does not work with muxed MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 clips":
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1372
You can probably find a work-around on the iMovie '08 discussions:

  • Help DVDSP is creating Horrible MPEG problems

My client called me from the east coast with bad news. All 5,000 DVDs that he just had replicated are basically ruined. The menus are great(52 interactive chapter story points etc...) BUT, the video has pixelating problems almost throughout the whole DVD. It is like it is going in and out of focus, especially on teh transitions. It is a documentary with mostly high rez stills. I edited in FCP5 and exported a self contained QT file like I always do. The vid looks great but when DVDSP encodes it the result is unacceptable. I am authoring a DL DVD-9 for replication. There are many menus and many tracks. The main movie is 2hours and 16minutes long and I set the encoder to 2 pass VBR with Best motion estimation and a bit rate of 4.8/4.8
What am I doing wrong. Is there any solution to my problem. I am in great need as my client wants to replicate an additional 7,000 next week.
    Thanks,
    Alex

OK Guys I have been making DVD's now for over a year on DVDSP and never new I had to convert the audio to AC-3. I have never had clients come back and say the audio did not work. I always use the aiffs that QT makes when I bring into DVDSP from FCP5. I have a very high ratio of compatibility as a I generally duplicate over 1,000 DVDs a year.
It sounds like you got a bit lucky, a combination of maybe the projects the video, who knows. But usually at some point way before 1,000 DVDs problems come up (people get the aPac lesson earlier on due to the old school of hard knocks) We all have been there at one point or another for some issue in DVD SP.
Now you mention duplicate DVDs, do you mean you are duplicating 1,000s of titles or 1,000s of copies? Are you duplicating them or replicating them? If you are in fact duplicating them (though if there is a glass master, probably not) the chances of pixelation/blocking is higher
Why do I need to convert them to AC-3.
There is a limit on the bit rate that machines can handle (throughput) of audio and video. When burning DVDs from you computer the closer you approach that number, the chances can increase of playback problems, depedning on media and player. Your bit rate for the movie uses some and then PCM Audio uses alot. aPAc uses alot less and helps prevent choking.
On replicated discs (not duplicated discs) in theory even the Max rate should play on all DVD players, but there are borderline players that do choke out. And having the highest rtate does not necessarily mean the highest quality.
Also some players act buggy when getting to the edges of DVDs, so if a DVD 5 is fully packed to the gills, as it were, there could be playback problems at the edge. So if you can not pack it as much and have same quality effectively, it is something else that can help.
So bottom line, for those, and other reasons, aPac
Also I tried to use compressor 2 to make a m2v file, using mpeg2 woth GOP of 7 and one pass VBR of 4.4/5.2 and it took over two hours.
To get the best quality you need two pass VBR it would seem (at least for this movie where there is alot of motion in many scenes as you described)...do not play with GOP settings or anything else right now, what you should start with is just using the presets as a baseline and tweak from there.
How long is the movie again? Do not have that post up, but it was about 2 HRs 15 Minutes or so? Do not know how much extra material is there after that, but you may be able to get it on a DVD 5 when it is all said aand done.
When I went to load the result into DVDSP, it crashed the software.
There can be many reasons for that also, could be bad assets etc.
What am I doing wrong, I feel like I am an just floating aling with no paddle.
Once again, we have all been there at one time or another. The first thing I think that should be addressed is getting your material straight (good encoding and sounds) then we can step from there. You can alwayss export track descriptions from the original project and use those for marker placement later. So if the assets are encoded clean and well, the next ducks in the line can be tackled

  • IMOVIE08 MPEG PROBLEMS, Not Importing movies from ilife

    Hi
A friend shoots a movie for me We agree on an MPEG file. MPEG file loaded, IMOVIE08 started. Dragging media does not work. Also Importing movie via menu does not work. (MPEG file greyed in file dialog) But, Quicktime loads and shows it. With Quicktime I could maybe onvert it. IMOVIE07 loads it and shows it and you can work with it in IMOVIE07! So why not in IMOVIE08 which I bought for hard cash!
Using IPHOTO08 I made a movie out of still pictures with some music. Standard functionality in IPHOTO08 Wanted to edit the Audio. Cannot load the movie generated by IPHOTO08 into IMOVIE08. Hmmm.
However an movie generated from a KEYNOTE08 presentation does import into IMOVIE08.
Why is there no compatibility even between parts of the same package on this ?
Why with IMOVIE07 I could import almost anything and then IMOVIE08 is very sensitive to imports and imports almost nothing??
I find this really a serious flaw in IMOVIE08. And when I cannot use my old material what good is it?
Joost (mail me at joostb AT notthefly.com)

    Welcome to the Discussion Forum
im6 would only edit limited formats but would import and convert various types of format to the type it could edit in.
By contrast im08 can edit more formats but no longer imports the formats that it can't edit, leaving you to convert the files to an appropriate format yourself before importing.
You can use many 3rd party applications to convert mpeg1/2 files, myself I use mpeg streamclip.

  • Can't get MPEG or Handbrake to work

I have a DVD that was made from my home movies. It's on my desktop as both a .dmg and .cdr file and I'm trying to get this into imovie. Handbrake posts "no valid source found" and MPEG doesn't open up the VOB files (I've tried these applications after reading some forums). I'm new to this and if you can help, that's great.

Hi and thank you both for responding. I'm still totally confounded. Here's what's happening. The .dmg file on my desktop has a pic of a hard drive and when I double clip, Video-TS files open, and it does play on DVD Player. But Handbrake still comes up with "No Valid Source Found". I've dragged the VOB file to MPEG and I see a grey line through the middle. At the bottom "IN" has 0, "Out" has 12:00 which is around the DVD's length. Nothing plays though on MPEG other than the grey line moving and I can't save the MPEG file as anything other than VOB. Will the MPEG problem be solved if I buy the application?

  • No sound on 10.6.8 after installing MPEG2 plugin, Quicktime problem?

After installing the Apple MPEG2 component, which worked fine with MPEG Streamclip to convert MOD files to MP4, I opened iMovie and it said "Missing Quicktime Components, The QuickTime components necessary to view, edit, import, and export several kinds of movies are not installed. These components are included with the iMovie installer; please re-install."
I am wondering which components need to be reinstalled and is this the reason why I have absolutely no sound at all on the operating system and iTunes crashes if I try to open it
I have tried with another User - same problem
I have fully shut down and restarted the computer
I have reset the Audio Midi to 48000Hz
The internal speakers are selected and not greyed out
I have disconnected all external devices and the internet and the problem is the same

Thanks - this thread does address the MPEG problem but I still have no sound whatsoever on any program or the system. If I try to preview a music file in the finder with no other program open there is no sound as it won't play. iTunes just crashes when opening with this error:

  • No external display through thunderbolt on 10.6.8

Ok so I have a 2011 MacBook Pro (8,2) and I use a mini displayport to HDMI adapter to connect to my tv or external monitor. It used to work fine (a few months ago) but now it doesn't do anything when I plug it in, but when I pull it out the screen flashes blue for a second. This is all under 10.6.8. I triple boot this machine and under 10.7 and Windows 7 the external display works fine. It also works fine with a 2009 MBP 5,5 that is running 10.6.8. The only difference I see is that the 09 MBP is actually mini displayport whereas the newer has thunderbolt and under 10.7 there was an EFI update and I think a thunderbolt update that wasn't offered under 10.6. My question is can I somehow get the external working under 10.6 with a software tweak/fix?

  • Sony Cyber-Shot Camera and videos

    Hello,
Has anyne figured out how to get videos from Iphoto to Imovie08? I am using a Sony Cybershot camera. Videos appear in Iphoto, but I cant get them to go into Imovie. Annoying... Please help
    Thanks

Do you reccommend one over another?
I use MPEG Streamclip on a daily basis to augment QT Pro capabilities. It has a full range of settings and features not found in the other applications mentioned -- including the ability to "fix" timecode breaks which are a frequent source of MPEG problems. While it has all of these advanced settings available for the experienced user, it also has a number of "presets" programmed in. For instance, if you source files are MPEG-1 at 640 x 480, you can use the "Export to MPEG-4 > iTunes" button to open a window which will allow your to select the "iPod" compatible H.264/AAC preset which will produce a file compatible with iMovie '08.
Also are there any downsides to using one of these?
For me the only downside is MPEG Streamclips inability to work in layers and off-sets as in QT Pro. You may be somewhat intimidated by the all the options available. (However, I feel it is an application whose use will grow in direct proportion to your understanding of how to use it.)

  • Problems updating projects to new versions of Premiere (CS5 to CC and CC to CC 2014) Memory consumption during re-index and Offline MPEG Clips in CC 2014

I have 24GB of RAM in my 64 bit Windows 7 system running on RAID 5 with an i7 CPU.
A while ago I updated from Premiere CS5 to CC and then from Premiere CC to CC 2014. I updated all my then current projects to the new version as well.
Most of the projects contained 1080i 25fps (1080x1440 anamorphic) MPEG clips originally imported (captured from HDV tape) from a Sony HDV camera using Premiere CS5 or CC.
    Memory consumption during re-indexing.
When updating projects I experienced frequent crashes going from CS5 to CC and later going from CC to CC 2014. Updating projects caused all clips in the project to be re-indexed. The crashes were due to the re-indexing process causing excessive RAM consumption and I had to re-open each project several times before the re-index would eventually complete successfully. This is despite using the setting to limit the RAM consumed by Premiere to much less than the 24GB RAM in my system.
I checked that clips played; there were no errors generated; no clips showed as Offline.
Some Clips now Offline:Importer  CC 2014
Now, after some months editing one project I found some of the MPEG clips have been flagged as "Offline: Importer" and will not relink. The error reported is "An error occurred decompressing video or audio".
The same clips play perfectly well in, for example, Windows Media Player.
I still have the earlier Premiere CC and the project file and the clips that CC 2014 importer rejects are still OK in the Premiere CC version of the project.
It seems that the importer in CC 2014 has a bug that causes it to reject MPEG clips with which earlier versions of Premiere had no problem.
It's not the sort of problem expected with a premium product.
After this experience, I will not be updating premiere mid-project ever again.
How can I get these clips into CC 2014? I can't go back to the version of the project in Premiere CC without losing hours of work/edits in Premiere CC 2014.
    Any help appreciated. Thanks.

To answer my own question: I could find no answer to this myself and, with there being no replies in this forum, I have resorted to re-capturing the affected HDV tapes from scratch.
Luckily, I still had my HDV camera and the source tapes and had not already used any of the clips that became Offline in Premiere Pro CC 2014.
It seems clear that the MPEG importer in Premiere Pro CC 2014 rejects clips that Premiere Pro CC once accepted. It's a pretty horrible bug that ought to be fixed. Whether Adobe have a workaround or at least know about this issue and are working on it is unknown.
It also seems clear that the clip re-indexing process that occurs when upgrading a project (from CS5 to CC and also from CC to CC 2014) has a bug which causes memory consumption to grow continuously while it runs. I have 24GB RAM in my system and regardless of the amount RAM I allocated to Premiere Pro, it would eventually crash. Fortunately on restarting Premiere Pro and re-loading the project, re-indexing would resume where it left off, and, depending on the size of the project (number of clips to be indexed), after many repeated crashes and restarts re-indexing would eventually complete and the project would be OK after that.
It also seems clear that Adobe support isn't the greatest at recognising and responding when there are technical issues, publishing "known issues" (I could find no Adobe reference to either of these issues) or publishing workarounds. I logged the re-index issue as a bug and had zero response. Surely I am not the only one who has experienced these particular issues?
This is very poor support for what is supposed to be a premium product.
Lesson learned: I won't be upgrading Premiere again mid project after these experiences.

  • Urgent!!  Problems muxing .m2v files and audio!! MPEG Streamclip/Compressor

    Hello!
I am under an urgent deadline to upload a short 6 min documentary clip for a client to review for screening this week. The footage was shot in 1080/60i HDV.
Usually, I find the best quality and fastest way to do this is to export directly from my FCP sequence using the '150 min Best Quality' DVD settings in compressor to get an .m2v video file and .ac3 audio file. Then I open the .m2v files in MPEG Streamclip which links it with my .ac3 file, then do 'Export MPEG with MP-2 audio". This gives me a single, muxed file that I can then upload to YouTube or Vimeo.
However, with this project, when I open up my .m2v file in MPEG Streamclip, it's recognizing the .ac3 file and I can see the info for it in the MPEG Streamclip window, but when I play the file in MPEG Streamclip or mux it, I don't hear any audio. Furthermore, after about 5 seconds into the clip, the playhead will continue moving, but the video will freeze, then maybe pick up again later. The .m2v video will play back smoothly in VLC player or Quicktime player, but not in MPEG Streamclip.
I've tried exporting different little sections of the timeline to see if maybe I had some corrupted footage or whatnot. I even exported a small clip from an older HDV project to test. But no matter where I export from, I am running into the same problem. I can bring the .m2v file and .ac3 file into DVD Studio Pro and burn a DVD with no problem, but I can't mux them. If I build the DVD file in DVD SP and try to open the .VOB file with MPEG Streamclip, I get the same problem. I even tried using a different software to mux (ffmpegX) but to no avail. When I try with ffmpegX, it either tells me I'm dropping frames, or if it works and it muxes it, when I open the MPEG file, it'll stutter at about 5 seconds in as well and I can't hear any audio, even though there is supposed to be audio in the muxed file.
I think I might have updated my Quicktime a few days ago with the system update, and maybe updated a few other things, so I don't know if this has any bearing on the problems I'm running into. But I was able just a few days ago to export HDV 1080/60i using this workflow without any problems.
I realize I have other export options, but this always seems to me to be the best quality and fastest way of doing it vs. encoding an H.264 which, on my machine is RIDICULOUSLY slow...I need to be uploading multiple versions of the cut to the client, and really need help! Thanks so much in advance!
    J

what you want is an m2v program file. Export a reference copy from FCP (uncheck Make Movie Self Contained") That's very fast. Bring it into Compressor. In the settings panel find the MPEG-2 settings folder. Select Program Stream. Adjust to your liking and run. The audio and video will already be "muxed" when it's done and using compressor 3 you can set it to upload to YouTube, Mobile or similar sites.

  • Video playback problems: ok in VLC, won't play in quicktime/MPEG streamclip

    Hi,
I have files made in .mov format in Final Cut Pro. When put on my MacBookPro, they lose their file extension. If I add the extension back on again (or not) they play in VLC. Only the audio will play in MPEG stream clip. I have downloaded perian, and the mpeg-2 extra for Quicktime, but Quicktime will still not play these files.
VLC file format says: audio files are sowt. The video file is mpgv codec.
The sad thing is I need to use Transana, a video analysis software, which only works with Quicktime.
I have checked out lots of forums, but nobody seems to have a good answer for this problem, assuming that the Perian or MPEG slipstream or the Quicktime add-on fill fix it.
I'd be very, very grateful for any advice.
    Thanks very much

I didn't but I installed it, then rebooted and yet nothing. The output changed though. Here it is.

  • Problem with compressing 16:9 sequence into mpeg-1

    Hello,
I am having a problem compressing from Final Cut via Compressor into an Mpeg-1 file. I shot (and edited) in 16:9 but the Mpeg-1 files keep turning out squeezed up in 4:3. I can't find any settings in Compressor to change, and I've looked in the Compressor manual but can't find any help there either. The dimensions are greyed out in the Inspector.
I have only a limited grasp of Compressor so if anyone has the patience to explain how to fix this in words of one syllable I would be really grateful.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello again,
    Sorry for the long pause.
I found a way round this problem initially by copying my sequences into a new FCP 4:3 project and they automatically became letterboxed, however there was a loss of quality so I would like to try this again. Where I got up to was, when I went into the Inspector window and clicked on the Filters tab, there's nothing in there to select. There's a video tab saying 'check the box to add a Filter', but then nothing there to check - just an empty table headed 'Name'.
Any advice on getting the filters to show up?
Many thanks for all your help.
    Sasha

  • Avi, mpeg and mov problems

I`m having no luck playing streamed .avi, mpg and .mov ( all video) files.
The avi and mpeg video files freeze up upon start up and only show the first second of the video for the first 5-10 minutes. After that they play fine although with no sound. They also play and sound fine after being downloaded and then opened.
The mov files only show the sliding bar or , after being saved , the blank QT screen with the bar sliding and no sound.
Also , the QT "intro" on apple.com/quicktime (the timberlake video) refuses to play properly, it just comes in very "blocky" with only occasional sound bits getting through. The same can be said about some avi files, when they do work.
I have flip4mac , divix, 3vix, xvid installed. Tried perian but that completely killed all streaming avi playback , just a Q with ? mark. Downloaded AC3 codec and put in the QT folder. no luck.
These are the sites in question.
    http://www.justintimberlake.com/QuickTime/justintimberlakeqt.html
    http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/1568/videos/riki_discovers.mov
Couldn`t find any avi movies to use as an example.
Last question. Is there a way to automaticaly stream avi and mpg files in the same QT screen as wmv and asf files?

Try VLC media player regarding playing .avi files.

I had no problems playing the Timberlake video. However, when I tried to play your second link (.mov) all I got was the bar, no audio or video.
Regarding your 1st link, have you tried repairing permissions & restarting?
Regarding your 2nd link: Apparently, it's a bad video link & no fault of yours or your computer.

"Is there a way to automaticaly stream avi and mpg files in the same QT screen as wmv and asf files?"
The following is a work-around for .avi files. Not sure if it will also work for .mpg files.
Open the file with QuickTime Player.
Open the Movie Info window (Command-i).
Note the name of the video codec used in the file.
Do a Google.com search for codec name +Mac and download one appropriate for your OS and computer.
Quit and relaunch QuickTime after installing the new codec.
    Try the file again.
Thanks to QuickTimeKirk for the above info.

    Regarding no audio sometimes................
If repairing permissions does not work, then try the following:
KB article - No sound from some applications, but system alert sounds play (Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4)
Another trick: If you have GarageBand installed, open it and then quit.

  • MPEG-2 encoding problems

I am having a problem with compressor and dvd studio pro, not really sure if it's one or the other. I have been exporting MPEG-2 through compressor straight from the timeline (I know compressor has problems using the QT Reference files) and although it has been working, recently it has been losing frames from both the mpg-2 and the ac3. It's usually 7 frames short in video and a second short in the audio, but it varies each time I compress. Although this file does play in QT and on the desktop, when it is in DVD studio it wont play any video, it just shows a green screen and plays the audio really low. Any suggestions, or insight on what might be wrong?

The m2v video is made up of GOPs (Group of Pictures). Each one consists of 15 frames, depending on the actual format used, where only the first frame has all the pixels; the I-Frame. The rest only contain the changes from the I-Frame. FinalCut cannot edit between I-Frames, unless it has all the information from the last I-Frame. Otherwise, most of the current frame would simply contain no data. At the end of the clip. I think FinalCut tries to end at the I-Frame, so that there's not a hanging handful of frames without complete data. I also think there might be a toggle for this in the preferences.
That's what I think and I'm sticking with it.
