Just after I sent a report about the bug in two-pass encoding it was already solved!
BTW, now MPEG Streamclip 1.5 can convert also DV material 4:3 <-> 16:9 while preserving interlacing! It can do the conversion with letterboxing or without letterboxing (but with cropping, of course).

iMovie HD deinterlaces while doing its own 4:3 <-> 16:9 conversion and the colors are washed-out -- MPEG Streamclip does all this with good quality!
I wonder why Apple hasn't hired the MPEG Streamclip author. But, on the other hand, a corporate management could ruin all this...

Mpeg Streamclip DVD settings for FCP...trying to preserve quality

I'm very new at editing, so please bear with me!
I am creating a director's reel for myself using footage on DVD. I'm ripping the DVDs with MPEG Streamclip to DV NTSC then importing to FCP and finally exporting to DVD.
My problem is--there is an egregious quality loss through this process. Basically is there a better codec than DV NTSC to use in MPEG Streamclip?
I'm having to render my clips in Final Cut which leads me to believe I'm adding an unnecessary step of compression/de-compression. Also, the DV NTSC quicktime doesn't look so bad until I put it in Final Cut...then it looks awful. Am I messing up an import setting?
Finally-- When I load my clip in final cut it loads it anamorphic and I'm having to right click my clip after I load it to the bin, search it's video settings, and de-click "anamorphic" in order to get the right aspect ratio (16:9)...am I doing something wrong there?? Is that messing with the quality?
I realize that this is a basic question, but I literally have spent 3 hours searching for an answer and haven't found one, so please forgive me if it's repetitive! And obviously I'm stuck using the DVDs...I have no option to get the uncompressed original footage. Thanks!!

Shouldn't be. But transcoding form MPEG2 to DV can get messy. I use DVDxDV for unwrapping MPEG2 form DVDs.

You should not be rendering in FCP, this suggests your sequence is not set to be plain ol' DV.

If your clips are not anamorphic, your sequence is set incorrectly. Start with a new sequence and make sure it is set to DV.

Why does De-interlacing looks better with MPEG StreamClip?

For our client we need to render 1080i for TV and 1080p for WEB. After creating graphics in AE we add final touch and audio in PR.
If we make it progressive in PR (CC2014.1) the zoom in the packshot does not look good.
However if we make the 1080i ProRes progressive in MPEG Streamclip the zoom does look great.
How is it possible a freeware swiss army-knife makes a better progressive export than commercial software?
Or is there something we do wrong?

Why do my DV files look better when played in MPEG Streamclip than iMovie?

My home movie DV files look washed out (compared to what my tapes looked like I played them on the TV years ago) when played with both iMovie '06 and iMove '11. The claim has been made that if I retransfer my tapes using iMovie '06 (rather than '09, which I used last time, or '11), there will be a dramatic improvement in the visual quality (and there will be some unspecified benefits if I set the dial to 48K audio). HOWEVER, if I play the files I already have in MPEG Streamclip, the visual quality improves substantially without any retransfer. Here is my question: Why? Why do my iMovie-imported files look better in MPEG Streamclip than in iMovie?
Here is my layman's answer: algorithms. When MPEG Streamclip encounters the exact same arrangements of molecules (or whatever), it has some plan for what to do with them that is smarter than what iMovie does. Is this another sign or way that iMovie is not well suited for DV?

Using MPEG Streamclip for Mac. Help me if you can

Hi, I've found out about MPEG Streamclip in Apple Discussions.
I opened Streamclip for the first time and converted an .mpg file to .mov file by clicking File>Export to Quicktime. It successfully converted quickly and I opened it w/ Quicktime and was satisfied to open its properties and see two individual tracks for visual and audio. This should convert to iPod video format w/ sound, correct? What bugs me is the fact that the file size multiplied by 4, or went from 256MB to 1GB.
I would like to know the perfect exporting settings for good iPod quality (sound and visual) and reasonable size. What scares me is that if and when this newly 1GB file is converted to iPod, it'll be even larger, since a previously successfully converted movie went from 3.5MB to 5.1MB.
I'd like to know your experiences of using Streamclip. Should I experiment? What setting did you use to get the mpeg files to .mov files with smallest size and equivalent quality? Any reply is appreciated, and ones that answer my questions shall be favoured.

In a nutshell, YES you should experiment. You should also try iSquint incidentally.
However, MPEG Streamclip 1.5.1 has an iPod button if you do File -> Export to MPEG4. Clicking that button sets the parameters to equal what the iPod would need to display without having to convert to a QuickTime movie first. Do one both ways to see if QuickTime and MPEG Streamclip's output looks identical (I've found QuickTime does a better job on animation).

No audio in Quicktime AVI files in MPEG Streamclip

When I import a Quicktime AVI file into MPEG Streamclip to edit, there is no audio. Annoyingly, if I convert that AVI file into an MP4 file and then import it into Streamclip the audio is working; but the loss of image quality is not acceptable. Any suggestions? Thanks

Batch processing in MPEG Streamclip

I have been given over 200 MPEG-1 clips with muxed audio to make a movie in iMovie. Dragging them right in will remove the audio, so I need to convert them to DV-PAL first
I tried MPEG Streamclip 1.8 and 1.9b2. The manual implies that I in "Batch List" should be able to add more than one file at the time. Not so. If I drag a bunch of files from the Finder into the Batch window, I'm asked what to do ("Export as DV"), where to save the converted files, enter conversion options and then I find that only the first file is added to the list.
So I tried the "Add Files..." button. "Files" is plural, but NOOOoooo. I was asked the same questions as above, but only the first file was added to the list.
Adding over 200 files and answer the same 3 dialogs for each and every one is tedious.
I have QT Pro, so I tried to create a "reference movie" containing a bunch of the mpg files. In QT player all clips play fine, but in MPEG Streamclip, only the first clip was converted. (sigh).
Now what? What is the magic trick to convert mpegs in batch mode?
Is there any other application that converts in batch?

Did you choose "Join all the files" in the conversion options? THEN only the very first input MPEG is processed (all the input DV files are processed, though). Seems like a bug with the MPEG input. But was that your problem?

Urgent!! Problems muxing .m2v files and audio!! MPEG Streamclip/Compressor

Hello!
I am under an urgent deadline to upload a short 6 min documentary clip for a client to review for screening this week. The footage was shot in 1080/60i HDV.
Usually, I find the best quality and fastest way to do this is to export directly from my FCP sequence using the '150 min Best Quality' DVD settings in compressor to get an .m2v video file and .ac3 audio file. Then I open the .m2v files in MPEG Streamclip which links it with my .ac3 file, then do 'Export MPEG with MP-2 audio". This gives me a single, muxed file that I can then upload to YouTube or Vimeo.
However, with this project, when I open up my .m2v file in MPEG Streamclip, it's recognizing the .ac3 file and I can see the info for it in the MPEG Streamclip window, but when I play the file in MPEG Streamclip or mux it, I don't hear any audio. Furthermore, after about 5 seconds into the clip, the playhead will continue moving, but the video will freeze, then maybe pick up again later. The .m2v video will play back smoothly in VLC player or Quicktime player, but not in MPEG Streamclip.
I've tried exporting different little sections of the timeline to see if maybe I had some corrupted footage or whatnot. I even exported a small clip from an older HDV project to test. But no matter where I export from, I am running into the same problem. I can bring the .m2v file and .ac3 file into DVD Studio Pro and burn a DVD with no problem, but I can't mux them. If I build the DVD file in DVD SP and try to open the .VOB file with MPEG Streamclip, I get the same problem. I even tried using a different software to mux (ffmpegX) but to no avail. When I try with ffmpegX, it either tells me I'm dropping frames, or if it works and it muxes it, when I open the MPEG file, it'll stutter at about 5 seconds in as well and I can't hear any audio, even though there is supposed to be audio in the muxed file.
I think I might have updated my Quicktime a few days ago with the system update, and maybe updated a few other things, so I don't know if this has any bearing on the problems I'm running into. But I was able just a few days ago to export HDV 1080/60i using this workflow without any problems.
I realize I have other export options, but this always seems to me to be the best quality and fastest way of doing it vs. encoding an H.264 which, on my machine is RIDICULOUSLY slow...I need to be uploading multiple versions of the cut to the client, and really need help! Thanks so much in advance!

what you want is an m2v program file. Export a reference copy from FCP (uncheck Make Movie Self Contained") That's very fast. Bring it into Compressor. In the settings panel find the MPEG-2 settings folder. Select Program Stream. Adjust to your liking and run. The audio and video will already be "muxed" when it's done and using compressor 3 you can set it to upload to YouTube, Mobile or similar sites.

Convert a movie from Quicktime to MPEG4 in MPEG Streamclip

I want to convert a movie from Quicktime (.mov) which I created in Final Cut Express to MPEG4 in MPEG Streamclip to be able to see it on my Samsung TV. The problem is that the uncompressed movie, comverted only from Quicktome to MPEG 4, stops almost every moment on my Samsung TV. I have connected an external harddrive in NTFS there via USB 2.0 (Samsung TV cannot play movies in HFS etc.). The uncompressed movies are bigger than 4GB in Quicktime.
I got the following information from Samsung (in German):

I ask here how to use MPEG streamclip (free version; I use 1.9.2) so convert my movies into MPEG 4 so that I cann watch it on my Samsung TV.
I filled out "Bildrate" "30" but this did not work. I have chosen less quality but there are still - less - interruptions and I find it laborious to test different versions of less quality so that it might work.
I ask you also because I want to create my movies to give it to other people via the internet (f.i. via rapidshare) but I need a smaller size of my movies and do not know all the different TVs my friends have. I cannot imagine that it is not possible to create a movie in MPEG 4 that cannot be seen in many TVs via an external harddrive?

I know that I can do that also in FCE. It takes much more time to convert a movie into MPEG4 than to export it as uncompressed movie in QuickTime which I can use f.i. in iDVD to burn a DVD or watch it on my MBP.
But I don't know the versions of TVs of other people if I want to send them the movie via internet f.i. via mydrive.ch etc. which have limited space if used for free. So which settings to choose for an output in MPEG4?
For my one use it is o.k. if the movie can be seen correctly in MPEG4 on my TV but I can also watch it via my MBP on my TV via HDMI.

i have seen this discussion before but not sure what codec i need to transfer to for my type of files...
i shot a video on the **sony hvr z7u** using compact flash cards and the video was shot on 1080i 24 frames per second...all the files are currently in m2t...
i used mpeg streamclip and used the follow settings:
-apple motion jpeg a
-100 percent quality
-uncompressed sound
-frame size: 1920 x 1080 (unscaled)
-interlaced scaling was checked
although the files are workable in FCP the files themselves are gigantic...did i use the correct settings?

Have only converted one file since updating OS, QT, and iTunes over the last 24 hours. Haven't noted any problems myself. Here is a link to the media file I converted if you want to judge for yourself. (Probably not the best material and settings, but should be representative.)

Mpeg streamclip jvc fcp

HI all.
I have a JVC everior. I have read all through the notes all over the internet, my problem though is this. I have transfered the files from the camcorder as they were recorded. When I watch them in mpeg streamclip before I even transcode them, they look like they are de interlaced sometimes, lines go through them. Now when I export, the quality is terrible. I have tried no compression to MP4, and a few other formats including quicktime/prores 422.. Nothing makes the quality how it shows up on the camera.
Does anyone have any kind of experience with the everio and how to get this to work? I hate the camera and am getting a new one, but I have footage my sister wants of her son..

the output should match the source file, generally speaking. So if you camera is making HD files then using a HD sized coded would suffice.
HDV (IIRC) is 1440x1080. I often find that using the default settings for a particular file type in Streamclip often work quite well.
As a test, take a small file. if it works, great batch process away, if not, tweak it and then try the same small file until you get a desirable result. Rinse and repeat.

MPEG Streamclip doesn't keep the original timecodes

I have a a ton of ProRes 4444-files that I want to re-encode to ProRes 422 LT for offline editing (we have limited space on our XSAN at the moment, that's why we use 422 LT instead of the 4444's).
I did this convertion in MPEG streamclip as it encoded quite a bit faster than Compressor does with the same files. And time was of the essence. But the resulting files does not have the same timecode as the original ones. They all begin at zero hours. I've googled the heck out of this but can't find anyone with the same problem. And there does not seem to be a preference to keep the timecode tracks in the export window.
Anyone know anything about this. If it doesn't keep the timecodes the same as the source files their useless for the offline-online workflow.

MPEG Streamclip Batch Pixelation

Hi there
I have a strange issue. When I use MPEG Streamclip to convert a video to MP4 one at a time it runs absolutely fine and the video looks perfect. However when I start a batch conversion I get all sorts of pixelation throughout the resulting MP4s. I am setting them to convert with exactly the same perimeters as if I were converting one at a time but for some reason they are a much worse quality. Particularly on transitions within the video. I was just wondering if anyone had any idea why this may happen when doing big batches and not when done singly? I'm stumped!!

Mpeg Streamclip

Can someone offer some insight as to why Mpeg Streamclip is always suggested for transcoding instead of Compressor? I mean by almost everyone on this forum.
Why is it better than Compressor? Faster encoding, better encoding?
Can it do things Compressor can't?
Does it do droplets?

Yes; if Quicktime cannot play something, I reach for MpegStreamclip next. Also, it not only opens and transcodes many formats, but also performs container operations that help avoid transcoding. For instance, demuxing an mpeg transport stream to elementary streams, or rewrapping it as .mpg; this is useful if you are trying to find the right format for a particular device or application, but don't want the time or quality loss from transcoding. I used MpegStreamclip to turn camcorder HDV files into Blu-ray discs with no transcoding at all; very handy when dealing with issues such as "HDV=mpeg2=Blu-ray......but not exactly".
I am not myself aware of any practical pass-through or rewrapping of formats in Compressor. That is, I know you can sometimes pass video through, but it has never been practical for my tasks. Compressor always needs to reencode.
