MPEG Streamclip- which compression option to choose?

I am using mpeg streamclip to convert some mod files into editable ones to use on FCP5. The footage was shot with an SD 16:9 camera at 25fps, which I have entered into the movie exporter. For the best outcome which compressor option should I select?

it has a black line either side of the clip...
You have somehow missed adding the Anamorphic flag. No problem, this can be added quickly in FCP.
Go to the Browser and scroll right until you see the column labelled "Anamorphic".
Click in that column next to each clip, adding a check mark. Your clips are now flagged.
and a grey line at the top and bottom...
The Window layout was previously 4:3 and replaces the area where there is no longer picture information with grey. Go to the menu bar and choose Window > Layout. Reselect the layout that you normally use. Alternatively, the keyboard shortcut, Ctrl and U will quickly give you the default layout.

  • Mpeg Streamclip: Which is the best conversion format for (SD) Mpeg 2 footag

I picked up a Canon FS11 (Very very tiny). With that comes some drawbacks, but overall a nice little camera that I can fit it my cargo or baggy pockets easily.
Anyways, I am able to convert the Standad definition Mpeg 2 footage with Mpeg Streamclip and use Final Cut Studio just fine so far.
My question is: It gives you options as to what format to convert the clips to (DV or Quicktime movie, as well as many other options. I just used NTSC DV, but was wondering if using a different format for conversion would be better or is this my best option.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks Michael,
    That is very helpful.
I have two other question for you. Streamclip asks if I want to fix time code breaks. I checked it for yes. But, do I want to fix them? And if so it gives you the option to not skip any frames. Do I want to do that as well?
Also somebody mentioned to me that I could use the Quicktime ProRes option on Streamclip. Would that give me higher quality by going that route or would it be overkill for my SD footage from this tiny camera?
Thanks in advance for all of your thoughts.

  • Best Quality Export Settings in MPEG Streamclip to Edit HD Video in iMovie

    Hi,
I import video from data DVDs and regular DVDs and edit the videos in iMovie.  In the past, I've always used MPEG Streamclip because it can read the native DVD VOB format.  I then use the "Export to DV" option in MPEG Streamclip which exports a .DV file readable by QuickTime or iMovie.  These are large files, but it is my understanding that this is best quality for editing.
Now I have started to receive HD Videos.  When I use MPEG Streamclip the same way, it reduces the HD video into a windowbox 720x480 video loosing all HD resolution.
I've done some research online and apparently MPEG Streamclip's DV export options are pretty limited and other people have said to use the "Export to MPEG-4" or the "Export to QuickTime" which are more configurable.  Each of these requires a Compression Codec Selection.  Some have said to use H.264, but I've also read that you should not compress with H.264 if you're going to be doing editing.
I do not care about file size, I want maximum quality.  The incoming DVD video is 1280 x 720 (HDTV 720p), what Compression selection do I select in MPEG Streamclip for "Export to MPEG-4" or "Export to QuickTime" to maintain the best quality for editing in iMovie?  I appreciate your help!
    Jerry

Use Apple Intermediate Codec for best quality and best editing performance.
If you have Final Cut Pro installed, you may have additional good options like ProRes 422.

  • Process for exporting in FCPX and then using MPEG Streamclip to downgrade?

I have footage shot with a 5Diii, and it is set at 1920x1080, 23.98p.
When I export through FCPX at H.264, it gives me a beautiful master file, but is larger than the 4GB that I need.
What is the process for using MPEG Streamclip to get a smaller file?
Do I export a master file in FCPX first using a different codec, and then use MPEG Streamclip to compress it? If so, what would be the best setting to export from FCPX, and then what would be the best setting to compress at in MPEG streamclip?
My goal is to be as close to 1080HD as possible.

Here is the background story....... I provide movie files on a DVD delivery (files in SD quality) and then also give a copy of the same films on a flash drive so clients can have it in HD quality, and plug the flash drive directly into the TV.
This always worked fine in the past until I ran into a movie file that is 4.7GB, and would not copy onto the flash drive, since flash drives only accept files up to 4GB.
So I tried reformating the flashdrive to exFAT. It allowed me to copy the 4.7GB on the flashdrive, but when I tried plugging it in directly to the TV, the TV did not recognize the drive. (I learned that exFAT is not always compatable with all TVs.)
My other option would be to download an app to let me reformat the drive into NTFS which accepts files bigger than 4GB, and supposedly works better with TVs. I haven't tried this yet because I am worried that downloading that app might mess up my computer. ???????
So....I have come to the conclusion that the only other thing I can do is compress the 4.7GB file to be 4GB (or less) so it will fit on the flash drive which I believe had an original format was MS-DOS FAT.
Are you suggesting instead of exporting the file from FCPX in H264, I should do it in ProRes? The file will be much larger than 4GB, but, then I can compress it, without losing as much of the quality as I would if I compressed an H264 file? Either way it needs to be 4GB or less, so I don't know if that defeats the purpose of using a ProRes file to begin with.
Thank you so much for helping with this!

  • Urgent!!  Problems muxing .m2v files and audio!! MPEG Streamclip/Compressor

    Hello!
I am under an urgent deadline to upload a short 6 min documentary clip for a client to review for screening this week. The footage was shot in 1080/60i HDV.
Usually, I find the best quality and fastest way to do this is to export directly from my FCP sequence using the '150 min Best Quality' DVD settings in compressor to get an .m2v video file and .ac3 audio file. Then I open the .m2v files in MPEG Streamclip which links it with my .ac3 file, then do 'Export MPEG with MP-2 audio". This gives me a single, muxed file that I can then upload to YouTube or Vimeo.
However, with this project, when I open up my .m2v file in MPEG Streamclip, it's recognizing the .ac3 file and I can see the info for it in the MPEG Streamclip window, but when I play the file in MPEG Streamclip or mux it, I don't hear any audio. Furthermore, after about 5 seconds into the clip, the playhead will continue moving, but the video will freeze, then maybe pick up again later. The .m2v video will play back smoothly in VLC player or Quicktime player, but not in MPEG Streamclip.
I've tried exporting different little sections of the timeline to see if maybe I had some corrupted footage or whatnot. I even exported a small clip from an older HDV project to test. But no matter where I export from, I am running into the same problem. I can bring the .m2v file and .ac3 file into DVD Studio Pro and burn a DVD with no problem, but I can't mux them. If I build the DVD file in DVD SP and try to open the .VOB file with MPEG Streamclip, I get the same problem. I even tried using a different software to mux (ffmpegX) but to no avail. When I try with ffmpegX, it either tells me I'm dropping frames, or if it works and it muxes it, when I open the MPEG file, it'll stutter at about 5 seconds in as well and I can't hear any audio, even though there is supposed to be audio in the muxed file.
I think I might have updated my Quicktime a few days ago with the system update, and maybe updated a few other things, so I don't know if this has any bearing on the problems I'm running into. But I was able just a few days ago to export HDV 1080/60i using this workflow without any problems.
I realize I have other export options, but this always seems to me to be the best quality and fastest way of doing it vs. encoding an H.264 which, on my machine is RIDICULOUSLY slow...I need to be uploading multiple versions of the cut to the client, and really need help! Thanks so much in advance!
    J

what you want is an m2v program file. Export a reference copy from FCP (uncheck Make Movie Self Contained") That's very fast. Bring it into Compressor. In the settings panel find the MPEG-2 settings folder. Select Program Stream. Adjust to your liking and run. The audio and video will already be "muxed" when it's done and using compressor 3 you can set it to upload to YouTube, Mobile or similar sites.

  • MPEG Streamclip 1.8 is out...

A new version of MPEG Streamclip is out...MPEG Streamclip 1.8
    As of 12/30/06
    http://www.squared5.com/
    added compatibility with DivX 6.5-6.6
improved AVI and DivX playback, encoding and editing
    added an internal AVI importer
    improved iPod compatibility
added the Open URL command with the Download button
    added an internal audio resampler
added support for MPEG-1 in VOBs and transport streams
the Fix Timecode Breaks command has been improved
added 90 and 180 degree rotation
    many bugs have been fixed

    - MPEG Streamclip can now open and download FLV files.
    - MicroMV and HDV camera owners please use Apple's DVHSCap to transfer movies into your Mac; then use MPEG Streamclip to convert them.
    - DreamBox and Topfield users can open, download and upload movies with MPEG Streamclip, using the Enigma and Altair menus.
    NEW IN VERSION 1.8
The Open URL command of the File menu, can now open and also download (or batch download) streams over the Internet, and it often recognizes and opens movies embedded in web pages. More details later in this guide.
MPEG Streamclip is now compatible with DivX 6. A special codec adapter has been added so now the DivX codec can be selected in the AVI and MOV exporter windows. If DivX 6.5 or later is installed, you can select MPEG Layer 3 audio in the exporter window as well.
The "Save As" command for AVI files has been significantly improved: it is faster, and can now handle B-frames properly. Better B-frame support has also been added in the AVI exporter, when the XviD codec is selected and B-frames are enabled in XviD options. Other improvements in the AVI exporter include proper encoding of AVI files with BMP and JPEG video, "lower" dominance for DivX, and a special frame size called "720x576 DivX PAL" that appear in place of "720x576 DV-PAL", when a DivX compatible codec is used.
An internal AVI importer has been added; it is a component that puts the AVI file in the player when it is opened in MPEG Streamclip. It was necessary because none of the three external AVI importers currently available (QuickTime, DivX, Perian-FFusion) seem to work properly.
Two internal AC3 and MP2 decoder components have been added: now it is possible to play QuickTime and AVI files with MPEG Layer 2 and AC3 sound without having to install any external codec.
An internal high-quality audio resampler (aka sample rate converter) has been added. This was necessary to replace the QuickTime audio resampler, used in previous versions of MPEG Streamclip, which worked well on PowerPC Macs but appeared to have random bugs on Intel Macs that affected the quality of sound and caused many out-of-sync problems.
Fixed many bugs; some of them were there since version 1.5, including: a bug in which the last few seconds of the audio track were not exported; a bug in which the video compressor used was sometimes different from the video compressor chosen; a bug in which the picture became darker/brighter when exporting with the same compressor; a bug in which the frame rate was not detected properly.
For FLV files, the Video PID menu lets you select the video aspect ratio (4:3/16:9).
Added support for MPEG-1 video in transport streams and in VOB files.
Added a quality slider for JPEG frame export.

  • MPEG Streamclip options for iMovie use and for iDVD use

    Hi.
This is my first posting so I apologise for all procedural inadequacies.
I am doing a montage of clips from different DVDs, using the DVDs as source material. For this I first run the DVDs through MPEG Streamclip, pick the relevant clips, then export the .VOB files as Quicktime files, then import them into iMovie HD, editing them together in it. I then save the montage as an iMovie HD project, import it into iDVD in order to burn a separate DVD which can be played on regular DVD players and on TV sets.
Everything looks fine until I see the final product on the TV screen. The picture quality is poor and it seems that the frame rate is odd. The sound is muffled, too. What am I doing wrong? I am not sure if I am choosing the right options in the MPEG Streamclip – Movie Exporter window (Compression, Quality, Frame Size, Frame Blending, Field Dominance, Interlaced Scaling, Reinterlace Chroma, Deinterlace Video etc.) I’m not even sure how relevant this is for this problem. I even tried exporting DVD .VOB files as MPEG4 files and as DV files instead of as Quicktime files, hoping the picture and overall quality would be better. It works in iMovie HD but when I try to import the edited montage into iDVD it won’t recognize it.
I’m stuck. Does anyone know what the optimal set of options is for what I’m trying to do? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
P.S. How do I alter the DV-NTSC setting which iMovie HD seems to have as default on the top of its window as soon as it starts up? I am in the UK and need to know that all is always set to PAL.

export the .VOB files as Quicktime files
"QuickTime" is rather vague, because it includes A LOT of very different codecs and qualities!
You want to output PAL/NTSC DV_streams if you want to import it to iMovie/iDVD! If the source is PAL, output PAL and vice versa (converting decent quality PAL<->NTSC is another can of worms).
But: if you want to preserve quality, you really should edit MPEG and re-author it as a DVD, and forget iMovie/iDVD because they want DV, and converting DVD->DV->DVD will lose quality!

  • MPEG streamclip compression types - converting into avi files to burn into DVDs later. HELP!!!!

I've made a movie on my iMovie '08 and export it and now I want to convert it to avi because I want to burn it into DVDs. I didn't use the 'export using quicktime' option on iMovie because there's this error occuring (error code = -43) and I don't know why! Anyhow, I'm using MPEG streamclip, and I'm so confused with the compression windows? What should I choose if I want the DVDs to be played on TV? Apple Photo - JPEG doesn't sound right. And the frame size thingy too. I also dragged the quality into 100% so that it would turn out good. PLEASE HELP ME! I really don't understand technical stuff like this Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • MPEG Streamclip compression for iMovie HD

I am wanting to edit my DVD home movies in iMovie HD. I make a new image (.dmg) in Disk utility & export as QT movie with MPEG Streamclip. The compression selection is where I am confused. Some discussion suggestions have been to use DV/DVC Pro & others have been to use H.264.
Anyone help clear this up for me?

If you're using iMovie HD, then I think many long time contributors on the iMovie Discussion Group would suggest DV/DVC Pro as it preserves as much of the original data coming from the DVD as possible. Image quality will be way less affected due to the much lower level of compression performed on the video. I think you'll notice a big difference choosing DV/DVC Pro over H.264
However also be aware that DV/DVC Pro will occupy 12-13GBytes of disk space per hour of video you convert. H.264 will be a smaller file size, but that is only due to the extreme level of compression applied to the video.

  • No audio - what exact demux option in MPEG Streamclip?

I have a bunch of MPEG1 Muxed video files from my brother-in-law's still camera. Imported into FCE, video is fine, no audio. Read many message boards and determined that the files are muxed (audio and video together) so then downloaded MPEG Streamclip. I've tried varioius Demux, Export, and Convert options, but still no audio in either FCE or even QuickTime Player. As an experiment, I sent a file to my Dell. Both video and audio played in Windows Media Player. So the audio is there, but why can't I get it on my Mac and import it into FCE? What exact Demux, Export, or Convert option should I be using in MPEG Streamclip? Or is there an FCE setting I'm missing? I also tried bbDemux with no luck. If you have an idea, please be specific!

Thank you, Meg The Dog. That worked just fine. You didn't specify which Export/Convert/Demux menu item to use so I used simply Export to QuickTime. The other method (Demux to Unscaled M2V and AIFF) produced audible files but your method was more straightforward for importing into FCE and may be better quality.
For the record, here is what the MPEG Streamclip user's guide says:
Demux to Unscaled M2V and AIFF...
demuxes the stream and creates an "unscaled" M2V video file and an AIFF audio file; you can import these two files in Final Cut Pro 4 or HD (and also in Final Cut Express if you have the MPEG-2 component); usual rendering time is required. Please DO NOT use drag & drop to import the files (Final Cut may crash due to an internal bug), but open the M2V file using the File menu and the AIFF file will be automatically linked (if you used the same name for the two files).
The "unscaled" M2V file is a demuxed file which tells QuickTime and Final Cut to not prescale it, e.g. to 720 x 540; it preserves its original size e.g. 720 x 576 or 720 x 480 so you won't lose quality when you render it. This is a special feature of MPEG Streamclip.
That, however, produces two files. Only need to import the .dv file, which is why I say your Export to QuickTime method is more straightforward.
Thanks for all the help. I still do not understand why the audio plays through my internal but not external speakers (any ideas?), but I will mark my question answered. I also wonder why muxed video files from a primarily still camera creates such a problem. Isn't this commonplace? How do people edit footage like this without jumping through all these hoops?

  • Which lenovo models have BIOS option to choose discrete graphics

I am planning on buying a Lenovo with an Nvidia graphics card.
Apparently, only the expensive Lenovos have an option in the BIOS to choose 'discrete graphics' or the dedicated graphics card.
The cheaper Lenovos only have a choice between 'Switchable graphics' and 'UMA only'( which I guess is the integrated graphics).
Can someone tell me which is the least expensive Lenovo model that has an option to choose 'Discrete graphics' in the BIOS ?

    Hi gurus,
We are using idoc technolody to implement the interface between R3 and 3rd party system.
Most of idocs are inbound processing, and it seems standard idoc can't meet our all requirements.
So we are considering the option:i choose doc user exit or create new idoc by copying standard idoc.
Which way do you like better? What are the advantages and disadvantages of them?
    Any help will be appreciated.
BTW, our customer will upgrade their R3 4.7 system to ECC6.0 after this project the next year.

    Hi,
By making changes in the User-Exits, if you can achieve what you are looking for then I would recommend to use user-exits. SAP programs are not bug free and SAP keeps on updating them by releasing hundreds of notes every day. If customer is upgrading to new version in near future then using standard programs are the best option.
    Cheers,

    1. Sync wasn't intended to be used in that manner. You would be better off carrying around a USB Flash Stick with Portable Firefox for use on "strange" PC's.
    2. You could open the "Library" {Ctrl + Shift + B} and highlight all those bookmarks and then delete them all at once. But that would also delete all the other bookmarks, and it isn't foolproof. All another person would need to do it to '''''restore''''' a bookmark backup file that has your bookmarks. Beyond that, a new Profile could be created and then the current Profile deleted; but that's "messing with" someone else's computer - an action that is worthy of terminating a friendship over, IMO.
And if that "public" computer was set up properly, Sync should have been disabled.

iTunes places the .ipsw file here:
    OSX:
    ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
    XP:
    C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
    7 &Vista:
    C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
Find and delete any and all .ipsw files on your computer. There should only be one, but delete all that you find. Next, disable ALL firewalls & security software on your computer. Connect your phone, iTunes running & restore from backup. Follow this by syncing your content back to your phone.
This will force iTunes to re-download the .ipsw file, as I suspect yours is corrupt.
