MPEG Stutters Upon PC Playback

Hello,
I'm using Final Cut Pro to edit together 30-60 min shows that I then want to playback on a PC via an optibase video plex pro card triggered by a software program called Scala.
Since DVD's were my backup playback system, I got into the habit of exporting Quicktime movies of the finished shows (not self-contained) and importing them into Compressor. In Compressor, I then used the 90 min best 4x3 settings (6.2 variable bitrate) to create seperate m2v and aiff files. I then MUX them together using BitVice Helper. Once I had the MPEG, I loaded it onto the PC playback system and put them on the air.
Recently, I've noticed a playback problem. The videos play a few seconds, pause a beat, play a second, pause again, giving the audio and video playback a stuttering quality (however, at least the audio and video were in sync).
The only MPEGS giving me trouble are the ones I've compressed on my dual 2Ghz G5, either using Compressor and BitVice Helper or using Cleaner.
Can anyone dignose the problem? Other MPEGS on the system, encoded using a very expensive PCI card on a PC, seem to playback perfectly. However, I don't know if this is because of the encoding or because I didn't give them enought time to fail.
I'm trying to figure out if this is a corrupt file problem, encoding problem, video card problem, MAC to PC problem or a driver problem.
Any ideas? This is problem is plauging me and effecting the quality of the TV station I am running (single handedly, waaahh).
I'm based in the Bay Area and would entertain bids on an MPEG consultant.
Thanks

Forgive me if I'm in over my head, but does this
matter for files you don't burn to DVD? There is no DVD burning involved.
Sorry, I was under the impression that you were burning to DVD-Rs. My response should be read in light of that assumption. So, please disregard my previous post if you are not burning to DVD-Rs.
"BitVice Helper" is available for free, but Innobits AB cannot give any support for it, because we have not written it. I have no reason to believe that it is faulty in any way, but it is a third party developer who has made it publically available on a "as is" basis. Maybe "MPEG Streamclip" can do a better multiplexing for your particular project. I simply don't know.
However, if you think that the problem stems from the MPEG-2 encoding rather that from the multiplexing, I'd suggest that you explore the trial version of BitVice.

I may have an interest in your purchase of BitVice.

actually, i think you're right. i switched from compressor to a hardware encoder (WinTV). at the same time, i switched from vbr to cbr. i'm not sure if it was the switch from sowtware to a capture card or variable to constant, but it's working now. thank god.
why is it so difficult to make a program stream on a mac? isn't mpeg playback a common function?

  • Ipod touch 1st generation stutters during music playback

My ipod touch running 2.2.1 (5H11) which has always had updates etc kept up, has recently started stuttering during song playback. I have reset a couple of times and it plays fine for one song and starts all over again. Any thoughts?

I am continuing to have problems with getting my ipod touch restored. I am following the directions on the faq's but it seems that my touch continues to freeze up during the restoring nprocess. Itunes continues to sync, but the ipod screen remains unchanged.

  • MPEG and Windows Media Playback lost

    Hi,
Assistance please! I stupidly download and installed MPlayer today. I have now lost any playback of Windows Media format sound and this includes the audio associated with Microsoft's ENTOURAGE email programme. Also, CODEC not found error comes up with WMV files AND some MPEG video files now have no sound. Most of the MPEG will still run on VLC.
"Something" has corrupted a file, but where? I have re-installed QT and WMP without success. Starting the mac (10.4.4) via another start-up drive WILL play those files correctly. I also did a re-installed (archive install) again without luck, so its something left behind in the Library folder I think.
Help please as this is driving me mad.

    Dave,
Ok will try Garage Band too. I 'assume' Windows playback and some types of MPEG are converted to a form of midi? I could never work out what form windows media video and audio takes, but did hear that it was a form of mpeg. I assume the sounds with Microsoft's Entourage etc are of the same nature.

  • Stuttering or jittery playback on DVD, not in FCP

Hi, I wasn't sure exactly where to post this since I don't know if it's a DVD Studio Pro problem, a Compressor problem, or a FCP problem.
In a nutshell, the problem is this: our short film looks like it plays fine in our (color-calibrated) progressive-scan monitor. When we view it on a large LCD HDTV (a friend's newly-purchased Samsung), anything in motion looks stuttery (people, their shadows, any pans with the camera). Some things stutter worse than others, looks like it might have to do with areas of high contrast (people's shadows gliding across lit areas). We don't see these problems on our own CRT TV (a 15-year-old 20" SD tv).
The question is, does this have something to do with the samsung tv - its sharpness looks like it's set way too high - or maybe with how we encoded the DVD or even compressed the FCP sequence in the first place?
We've tried applying motion blur to some of the pans, we've tried antiflicker filters to some moving shots, but these don't seem to fix the stuttering problem (and since you can only see it once it's on DVD playing on the big lcd hdtv, it's hard to do lots of parameter fiddling).
Any ideas about what could be going on? I'm hoping this is a simple matter of some compressor or dvd studio setting, or maybe we need a special fcp filter for the moving shots.
There are 3-way color corrector filters on just about every clip, if that makes a difference.
It's never been interlaced at any stage of the game, so I don't think that will be a problem.
Shot with: Canon XH-A1 in 24p mode, 1/24 shutter speed, 16:9.
    Software/hardware info:
Captured directly into FCP from the HDV tapes, sequence settings are the standard 23.98 1440x1080 ("anamorphic").
Monitor: Dell 2404WFP (ultrasharp lcd monitor), connected to a Matrox MXO to do the color calibration
Compressor settings: DVD 16:9 90 minutes "best", then I upped the data rate just a bit (I think it was 7.2 and now it's 7.4). Tried default GOP settings, then tried IBBP (or maybe that was the default) and IBP as well. Otherwise, no changes to defaults.
Final Cut Studio (version 1), latest updates (so FCP 5.1.4, etc.).
DVD Studio Pro settings - all defaults. Took compressor's .m2v and .ac files, added them to a track, burned a DVD (Verbatim DataLife) at 2x speed.
If it matters, we edit on either a MacBookPro (early 2008) or an iMac (2007) core2duo about 2.2GHz each, max memory (4GB and 3GB respectively).
    Thanks in advance!
    kyle

Just an edit to my post - I tried hooking up the matrox mxo to a CRT TV and it looked fine (well, no stuttering). The sequence apparently doesn't have stuttering in it to begin with. So it must have been the LCD HDTV we tested on.
Just got a chance tonight to test on another plasma hdtv (different model - panasonic) and there was a bit of stuttering there. So maybe the tv's sharpness is an issue? Both TVs that showed stuttering (a plasma and lcd hdtv) were set with very high sharpness values, and a CRT TV (pretty standard 20" model) and the samsung plasma HDTV (low sharpness setting) didn't show stuttering. So maybe we're at the mercy of sharpness settings, though I'm lost as to why that would cause this kind of effect.
Is that a probable cause of stuttery playback of motion shots - the sharpness setting of the TV?

  • QuickTime MPEG-2 Component cant playback High Profile High Level content

Is the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component really unable to playback HP HL content?
Im encoding high bitrate media content to mediaservers with my Mac Pro and have used VLC so far to playback the encoded files.
VLC however doesent loop flawlessly so i decided to try QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component.
To my disappoinment it did not play back the High Profile High Level Mpeg-2 content at all.
It tried, but no image was visible and only a few digital bleeps could be heard from soundtrack.
Why call it a playback component if it cant do the job?

  • MPEG-4 video file playback issue

I have ripped a couple of DVDs into MPEG 4 to watch on my Macbook. The first time I accessed one I put the headphones on but it was unwatchable - the picture and sound were out of sync. A while later I decide to poke around this issue and found that the movie played just fine until I put the headphones in ! I then had to cancel playback remove headphones then re-start the movie. Any-one got an idea on what's happening? Thanks.

  • MPEG-1 MUXED - audio playback disappeared

    Hi-
I've got a problem playing MPEG-1 muxed clips, the audio isn't playing back. Happened couple weeks ago, then fixed itself (maybe a codec expiry problem?), now I the sound is dead again, also QT is stalling after 10 secs of video playback..
Here's the details of the clip:
    MPEG1 Muxed, 320 x 240
Comp is iMac G5, running Tiger 10.4.3 and QT 7.0.3
thanks in advance for the help!

wow Kirk, thanks for the tip, that fixed he problem strait away-
I'd been searching for awhile, googled, QT help, nothing - I didn't know the MIDI Setup controlled QT playback, and wonder why it changed to 96000 all of a sudden - maybe it changed after I played back a clip with that setting....
anyway, looks like I'll be able to solve that problem in future, its really the only one I've had in years of using QT -
    thanks again!

  • Skipping/Stuttering on music playback

Since upgrading to iTunes 6, music playback has become completely unusable -- everything I play stutters or skips repepepepeeatedly. I've set Quicktime to safe, checked my drivers, defragged by disk, all to no effect. I don't want to abandon iTunes for playback (not least because it will take hours to change all the .AAC files to .MP3, and I'll lose everything I've bought from the music store). How do I fix this -- failing all else, is it possible to go back to version 5, which worked fine?

I've managed to solve this by winding down the
"Sample Rate Conversion Quality" under "Advanced
Audio Properties" (Control Panel | Sounds and Audio
Device Settings | Volume | Advanced) to its lowest
setting ("Good"!). I don't know what that actually
does, but the audio quality still seems fine to me,
    and no stuttering.
What that actually does is force KMixer to use linear interpolation in its resampling instead of high-end multipoint interpolation.
If you don't get that, then what it does on most machines is to make the audio sound like total crap.
Hey, if it works for you, then it works for you, but I would only consider this to be a last resort. The fact that this actually worked for you tends to indicate that you either have a crap soundcard, or that you have crap drivers for your crap soundcard. Updating your audio drivers might be beneficial, and replacing the soundcard with one that doesn't require KMixer to resample normal 44.1khz input would definitely be beneficial.

  • How I fixed stuttering iTuned video playback

    I went into quicktime preferences and unchecked;
    - enable directdraw on secondary monitors
    - enable direct3d video acceleration
In start, run, I typed; dxdiag and on display tab I disabled direct3d acceleration.
For games and things like cyberlink powerdvd you will need this enabled, so only disable direct3d video acceleration in dxdiag when you watch itunes or quicktime is stuttering.
Then in my ati video settings I enabled amd overdrive.
I didn't change any settings in amd overdrive because when I do I get corrupt blocky pictures and sometimes my computer crashes, so when I enable amd overdrive I just enable it and don't change any settings.
Now I can play video in itunes with no stopping of the video which unsynced video with audio.

Cool. Hopefully someone will benifit from this .

  • Slight stuttering with music playback

    Hi guys,
As above, I've had this issue for a while now, long before Lollipop... it usually happens at the start of playback (PowerAmp) and lasts for literally a few seconds. I'm thinking it might be my memory stick. I have an older style class 10 Samsung SD in there. Thinking I should maybe try one of these?
    Any thoughts

    Hi slipd,
You could try backing up the SD card and then formatting it, it may be possible that the SD card is simply having issues with data transfer.
Let us know how you get on.

  • My Music Sounds Distorted Upon DVD Playback

Anytime I create a movie and burn it in iDVD, I have to drop the movie in as a slideshow in order to keep the aspect ration and not have portions of my picture and text cutoff on the tv. The problem however is that when I play my movie the music is always very distorted, as if it was recorded at too high a volume.
In the slideshow option I have moved the volume all the way down to (min) but still find I get a distorted playback sound. Can anyone offer up suggestions?

Figured I'd bump this back up and hope for suggestions. Really dont want to have to go back to PC for this stuff. Ugh!

  • QuickTime File Motion Stuttering Upon Display Change for Projector

When I play my Quicktime file on my MacBook's native resolution (1280 x 800) it plays wonderfully. However when I change the display to 1024 x 768 to match the max resolution of my projector, the motion stutters quite badly.
    Any suggestions?

What are the rest of your machine and software specs/versions? Wea re having a similar effect when we try to export a HDV 1080i sequence to SD dvd, and numerous other settings. It basically looks great on the 23" cinema display, which is progressive, and looks terrible on a DVD player/TV, which is interlaced. We're trying to find the solution to our problem, and wanted to see if there's a correlation with yours. If you search the Final Cut and creativecow.net forums for " Interlace Artifacts " you will see the threads and maybe help out with your problem.

  • MPEG stuttering when played in iTunes, normal when played directly in QT

I have an MPG which plays just fine in QT, but when I add it to iTunes and play it through there (it lands in the Movies section and I double-click it), it stutters (the audio), as if it has trouble keeping up with it. Any ideas? Can this be fixed, or should I not be using iTunes to manage my video content?

I'm experiencing the exact same thing. All my music & movies stutter when played in iTunes but play fine through Quicktime. Any solutions?

  • Stuttering in CD Playback

Okay, so everytime I try to play a CD in iTunes, it stutters like crazy. When I import files, they seem all right, but if I try to play them directly off the disc, they don't work. It's really weird, considering playing CDs in other applications such as Winamp and Windows Media Player is perfectly fine.
I've tried the Quicktime Waveout trick, but it's still not working. Can anyone help?

If you have not already fixed it I DID!!!!! I went crazy till I fixed the stuttering. I went to control panel Sounds, and Devices then AUDIO. Just Change your default device I had 2 to choose from and picked SoundMAX....whaaala! It worked. If you have a choice of more than one default device for your audio pick the other...it should fix the annoying problem.
    good luck
