MPEG with compressor to use in Vegas
I have tried to render out an amorphic 16 by 9 widescreen mpeg2 file in compressor. This file will not open in Vegas.
ANyone have any suggestions? I turned off the mac metatags so I know that is not the problem.
One possible reason you can't open a compressor file in Vegas is because Compressor does not mix the mpeg and audio files into one track. They're separate. If Vegas is like some of the other Windows editing suites I've seen, it may handle the audio and video as one file.
Of course, the advice to go to a Vegas support forum is probably the best you've gotten, since there are people there that actually use it.
And to answer your question about DVD Studio Pro: Yes, it can handle 5.1 surround. It doesn't mix them or process them in the program, because that's not what DVD SP is for. The FCP suite has other apps for that.

No audio playback of MPEG-2 muxed program streams made with Compressor?
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Any fix? Audio plays in VLC so its not operator error..
Upgraded to QT 7.6.6 (1632) and no longer No have audio playback of MPEG-2 muxed program streams made with Compressor?
This machine played audio out of QT with these files prior to upgrade this afternoon.I've never run a component conflict test is there a tool for that or is this a command in terminal?
There may still be some "tools" around to help with the process but you still have to run playback tests yourself and evaluate the results. The process is quite simple. You just need to "hide" one or more components, open the QT Player, and play a file to see if it is now working correctly. If it isn't, then continue "hiding" additional components. If the file does play correctly, then you have found a conflict and can start "unhiding" components to determine which one (or combination of components) is causing the problem by removing any "problem" components to an external location such as your desktop. Just remember to close the QT Player after each playback test. This is required (or at least used to be required) for the regeneration a new list of components available for use.
I used the term "hide" above since I simply keep a "Disable" folder handy in my Library QT Component folder for just such tests. Placing a component or set of components into the folder temporarily "hides" it from the QT Player when it next generates a list of the components available for use. Specific strategies vary. I sometimes use use a binary tree approach to hide the components (I.e., "hide" half of the components instead of one at a time.) Unfortunately, I don't know exactly how this works with regard to QT X. So, I would likely run such tests in the QT 7 Player. So far, when everything is working correctly in QT 7 Player, QT X seems to be able to play the same file(s) in QT X via the 32-bit switching process. -
What Compressor To Use In Export With FCE?
My Final Cut Express has no MPEG2 export...what's a good, reasonably priced compressor to use, since apparently it's no longer an option with Quicktime Pro?
This is not reasonably priced, but it is free for 30 days to use so thats not bad if you are in a pinch as I currently am because QT7 removed my MPEG2 encoder from my FCE 2.0 that I used to have when I was using QT 6.?. Bad Apple. I felt that I paid for the MPEG2 encoder the first time so why does Apple have the right to remove it? Good luck in the same problems I am having. I will probably choose to look for a non-Apple created program. I have heard that there are some free ones out there, you just have to look.

Can Compressor be used with a 5.15 GB uncopyrighted disk rip?
I have the disk ripped to the video_ts and audio_ts folders but I need to compress it to a 4.8 DVD. Can it be done with Compressor? If not, any recommendations?
Toast.

Peferling
==================
Boy, you are not kidding, I was running both the cloud and CS6, and I was ready to throw in the towel.
I have changed computer's twice now, have a solid state hd, (which I love) with 10 terabytes on externals, I run NOTHING except adobe's stuff on my HD now, and only one version of it, and it runs like a dream.
So, I updated the OS to win 8.1, updated my peripherals,
I dumped CS6 (hated to, but for some reason my 3D won't work on it, it works fine with the cloud) but in CS6 the software was turning it off after adobe's last update.
I've made a virtual machine for my development environments which do not play well with adobe's stuff.
My rule of thumb has always been double what the manufacturer states is required for RAM, but imho, with my current upgrades: upgraded to win8.1, and other peripherals, spent two weeks changing stuff over and it's about 100 times better than trying to run CC and CS6. - No kidding, the change is astronomical
But for anything PC I'm way over powered, and for Adobe, I'm still underpowered.
Next, I'll just get a mac for Adobe, and stick with my pc's for ms/CentOS. Too, it seems like since the cloud was initiated Adobe is rolling out the updates faster and changes without warning. The processor/3D issue, I had no warning on it, just woke up one day and "no more 3d" :S
But I do love the cloud, so, guess there's got to be some dark lining to it. <g> -
NTSC to PAL as .MPEG in Compressor 3.0.5
We're using FCP 6.0.6 with Compressor 3.0.5. We are to begin making PAL versions of our show with the following specifications:
Format: Mpeg-2
Stream Type: Program Stream Main Profile @ Main Level
Video Bit Rate: CBR 8 Mbps
Image Size: 720 x 576
Video Standard: PAL
Frame Rate: 25 fps
Frame Type: Interlaced
Field Dominance: Top Field First
Chroma Format: 4:2:0
GOP Structure: Closed GOP; sequence headers on every GOP
GOP Formate: IBBP
GOP Length: 15 Frames
Audio Mode: 2 channel stereo
Audio Type: MPEG Layer II
Audio Bit rate: 192 Kbps
Frequency: 48 khz
Audio Level: Cant' peak above -10dfs Aim between -18 and -10
The file we are converting is a 720 x 480 DV/DVC Pro NTSC .mov file. I can adjust all my settings in Compressor so as to meet these specifications, but it comes out with an image size of 720 x 540 and I can not understand why. I can get it to 720 x 576 if I change the format to an .mov, but it absolutely has to have an .mpeg extension. Our file is to be uploaded on an ftp site.
Any assistance would be much appreciated! Are you viewing this in Quicktime Player? If so, you might want to have a look at this: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA23436

Hello!
I am under an urgent deadline to upload a short 6 min documentary clip for a client to review for screening this week. The footage was shot in 1080/60i HDV.
Usually, I find the best quality and fastest way to do this is to export directly from my FCP sequence using the '150 min Best Quality' DVD settings in compressor to get an .m2v video file and .ac3 audio file. Then I open the .m2v files in MPEG Streamclip which links it with my .ac3 file, then do 'Export MPEG with MP-2 audio". This gives me a single, muxed file that I can then upload to YouTube or Vimeo.
However, with this project, when I open up my .m2v file in MPEG Streamclip, it's recognizing the .ac3 file and I can see the info for it in the MPEG Streamclip window, but when I play the file in MPEG Streamclip or mux it, I don't hear any audio. Furthermore, after about 5 seconds into the clip, the playhead will continue moving, but the video will freeze, then maybe pick up again later. The .m2v video will play back smoothly in VLC player or Quicktime player, but not in MPEG Streamclip.
I've tried exporting different little sections of the timeline to see if maybe I had some corrupted footage or whatnot. I even exported a small clip from an older HDV project to test. But no matter where I export from, I am running into the same problem. I can bring the .m2v file and .ac3 file into DVD Studio Pro and burn a DVD with no problem, but I can't mux them. If I build the DVD file in DVD SP and try to open the .VOB file with MPEG Streamclip, I get the same problem. I even tried using a different software to mux (ffmpegX) but to no avail. When I try with ffmpegX, it either tells me I'm dropping frames, or if it works and it muxes it, when I open the MPEG file, it'll stutter at about 5 seconds in as well and I can't hear any audio, even though there is supposed to be audio in the muxed file.
I think I might have updated my Quicktime a few days ago with the system update, and maybe updated a few other things, so I don't know if this has any bearing on the problems I'm running into. But I was able just a few days ago to export HDV 1080/60i using this workflow without any problems.
I realize I have other export options, but this always seems to me to be the best quality and fastest way of doing it vs. encoding an H.264 which, on my machine is RIDICULOUSLY slow...I need to be uploading multiple versions of the cut to the client, and really need help! Thanks so much in advance!
Jwhat you want is an m2v program file. Export a reference copy from FCP (uncheck Make Movie Self Contained") That's very fast. Bring it into Compressor. In the settings panel find the MPEG-2 settings folder. Select Program Stream. Adjust to your liking and run. The audio and video will already be "muxed" when it's done and using compressor 3 you can set it to upload to YouTube, Mobile or similar sites.

Quality Issues with Compressor 2.0.1
Has anyone had any contact with Apple engineers about the problems folks are having with macro-blocking artifacts with Compressor since 2.x appeared?
Is Apple aware of this serious step-back in reliability and quality?
We too are experiencing this and it is very troublesome. Really takes the fun out of doing this type of work.
I would like hear from those who have never had the problem or who had the problem and resolved without reverting to older versions.
I think the one common factor among those experiencing the problem is that we are all working in DV25 (NTSC or PAL).
Comments?
thanks,
MACKJamie, here is a link to a more detailed discussion on the problem with Compressor's (v2) 2-pass MPEG2 VBR encodings.
Waymen, "MPEG-2 conversion issues" #8, 06:15pm Sep 13, 2005 CDT
The problem is somewhat random and can be hard to reproduce or detect. However, since it usually (always?) occurs in sequences that contain at least some difficult to compress material it's possible that very clean video sources will suffer less from this defect (since they won't be "wasting" bits to encode noise or image shortcomings that were already present in the original source).
Some users have complained about poor fades to black, but probably the worst example I've seen was a slow cross-fade between two clips that both contained a fair amount of motion. In the latter case, Compressor 1.2.1 handled the transition much better even when using the same bit rate and quality settings. However, when Compressor 2 fails the image degenerates into some fairly large, very low detail compression blocks for maybe one or two frames. Then it recovers, everything will look fine until you see another random occurrence of the problem. You may only see two bad frames out of several hundred, but when you see it you know immediately that something is wrong.
I doubt that this is a configuration problem or something that is hardware specific since I've been able to duplicate the exact same failure on two systems that had absolutely nothing in common as far as installation or software setup. The only commonality was the source video clip (which looks fine) and Compressor 2. However, this same clip looks fine when encoded with Compressor 1.2.1.
Note, also, that I'm using only Compressor 2 presets on Compressor 2, this is not the problem caused by using "old" presets imported from Compressor 1.X.
Anyway, I've already sent Apple a bug report, so there is little that I can do at this point other than to hope for a fix from Apple. That and restricting myself to one-pass encodings (as discussed in my earlier post). -
I am getting ready to deliver TV spots for air via FTP, and the media house requests the video be delivered as mpeg with mp2 audio. Maybe I'm missing something, but I couldn't figure out how to do that easily through Compresser, or even through Mpeg Streamclip.
Here's what I wound up doing: I exported the spot as uncompressed Quicktime. I brought it into Compressor and encoded it as mpeg2, Best Quality and the audio as Dolby 2.0 (in the future, I'll just use AIFF). THEN I brought those files into DVDSP in order to mux them, then opened the resulting VOB in Mpeg Streamclip and converted it to mpeg with mp2 audio.
That seemed to satisfy the tech guy at the media distribution house. But there's gotta be an easier way, right? I know I'm missing something simple...It's been a while since I've done it with MPEG Streamclip, and I'm not at my Mac right now ... but as I recall, both the audio and video files need to be in the same folder and have the same name (except for the extension). Bring the video file into MPEG Streamclip and it will automatically find the associated audio file.

Can I Encode to These Settings with Compressor??
Greetings,
I need some help from you good people.
I have been tasked with preparing our video program for an SD Television Broadcast.
In my many years of using Final Cut, I have never had to export for an official SD Broadcast. So I declare up front that this is a new world for me from web and DVD creation.
But I seem to be having a hard time matching all of these settings using an MPEG-2 Transport Stream in Compressor. So I want to know if I can use Compressor to match these settings or will I miss some of what the station wants?
I've tracked down most of the major settings in Compressor. I highlighted below in bold and red what I am having trouble with.
I will also add that I was trying to work with the GOP I and P frames settings but do not see a choice for selecting 1 frame for each one.
Most of my other issues are with the audio settings. I went to "Extras" and selected Multiplex but don't have any other control over the audio.
So any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
These are the requirement sent from the station:
(BOLD AND RED are what I need help with)
VIDEO:
MPG TYPE: MPG-2
STREAM TYPE: PROGRAM (VIDEO + AUDIO)
VIDEO RESOLUTION: 720x480
FRAME RATE: 29.97 (NON-DROP) 4:3 DISPLAY
FIELD ENCODING: TOP FIELD FIRST
DEINTERLACING: USE TOP FIELD
BITRATE TYPE: VARIABLE (If they say a variable type, why would they state a Constant Bit Rate below??)
RATE CONTROL MODE: MODE 1
CBR BITRATE: 8000Kbps
GOP STRUCTURE:
I FRAMES: 1
P FRAMES: 1
PROFILE ID: 4:2:2
LEVEL ID: MAIN LEVEL
AUDIO: MPEG 1
AUDIO MODE: MPEG LAYER 2
AUDIO FREQUENCY: 48000 HZ STEREO
BITRATE: 256 KBPS* VARIABLE BITRATE EMBEDDED
MODE: STEREO
NO DE-EMPHASIS
MULTIPLEXING TYPE: MPG-2
Thanks in advance!
-AlDisclosure: I haven't prepared a show for SD Broadcast either, but have been working with Compressor/DVDStudio Pro for a decade.
Looking at the specs, there are only a couple of unclear areas... the big thing is, they're asking for a Program Stream rather than Elementary Streams.
I looked into that codec and it seems capable of handling the task once you clear up the VBR/CBR and interlace/de-interlace questions.
Good luck! -
MPEG-2 Compressor missing from QT 6?
I've just started using DVD Studio Pro. And I'm learning how to use it. So I tried to burn a DVD. The process required that I compress the QT MOV file into an MPEG-2 format. So following the directions, I tried. But there was no MPEG-2 compressor listed when I selected "Export" from QT Player.
I'm using QT 6.0.3 (Pro) and Mac OS 9.2.2 on a Powerbook G4 800 MHZ machine. Thts is a freshly installed copy of both the OS and QT using the recommended installation choices.
GaryThe standard distribution of QuickTime never came with an MPEG-2 compressor. That would only have come with DVD Studio Pro. If you're working on the system on which DVDSP is installed, you may need to reinstall DVDSP to get the codec back. If you're doing the export on a different system, you may be able to copy the QuickTime MPEG Encoder that came with DVDSP to the system on which you're working; I'm not sure, though, since I haven't seen that old version of DVDSP in years.

MPEG Streamclip compressors???
I dont know which compressor to use and what setting should i adjust to get best quality picture on my TV.
Iam converting .MOD format to quicktime .MOV, from there i import that to iDVD but when i finaly burn that on dvd the picture quality on TV is crap.
It must be the compressor and settings, did anyone have similar problems?HELP
Thank youAccording to:
Wikipedia
Many MOD files are actually MPEG-2 files. Straight Quicktime format is uncompressed video. It may be in the process it is attempting to scale up from the compressed to uncompressed. I would say it is best to stick with the same compression format if you can. MPEG-2 playback component which you can buy at the Apple Store can help. This really is a question for MPEG Streamclip's e-mail:

How do you mark a section from the timeline to send to Compressor 4 using Final Cut Pro X?
I am trying to send just a certain piece from the Timeline to Compressor 4 using Final Cut Pro X and I can't figure it out. Please help!
jakelovesanna wrote:
The video itself is intirely 5 minutes, but the timeline goes to 24 hrs.
24 hours?
If you select the timeline and press Shift+Z do you see a lot of black space in the timeline? If so, you may have a huge gap clip (although I fail to understand how you achieved it). Click on it and if it can be selected, delete it with the Backspace Key (next to the = key).
Then press Shift+Z again.
If I've got this wrong, can you post a screen grab of your timeline?

Ingested videos not playing in stereo with Quicktime or after exporting with compressor
Why does it seem like every time I try to do something just mildly complex I'm stymied by some bug or problem with the software?
Here's the deal:
0) I have footage was shot with a stereo camcorder, a JVC GR-DV3000 (circa 2003), with built-in stereo mics.
1) I ingest the footage from the Mini DV tape and save it to a camera archive using Final Cut Pro X (latest version).
2) I use Final Cut Pro to pull the events out of archive.
3) When the events are played from within Final Cut Pro X, I hear strereo and audio meters indicate the audio is in stereo (left and right channels have different volume levels).
4) When the events are played with the open source software, VLC, I hear stereo, too.
5) When I export the files for playing on an Apple device using Final Cut Pro, the audio is in stereo as you would expect.
BUT:
5) When I play the event clips with QuickTime from my hard drive after step 2 above, I get no audio from the right channel. Weird, right?
But most annoying of all:
6) When I use Compressor 4 (instead of Final Cut) to output the event clips to "SD for Apple Devices" using the default audio settings, I get no audio from the right channel, either.
7) I've got hundreds, if not thousands, of clips. I'm not about to save each clip manually with FCPX. I need to batch convert these files with Compressor.
8) I've tried various combinations of the audio import settings ("Analyze and fix audio problems," "Separate mono and group stereo audio," and "Remove silent channels." These options have not solved the issue for me. The clips still play in mono in QuickTime.
When I look at the properties of the file in QuickTime, here's what it shows:
DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, 720 x 480 (640 x 480)
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 32000 Hz, Left
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 32000 Hz, Unused
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 32000 Hz, Unused
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 32000 Hz, Unused
Why it's telling me the other 3 channels are unused, I have no idea. As I mentioned, the footage was shot in stereo and even Final Cut plays it in stereo.
Here's what VLC says about the very same file:
Stream 0:
Type: Audio
Codec:PCM S16 LE (sowt)
Channels: Mono
Sample Rate: 32000 Hz
Bits per sample: 16
Stream 1:
Type: Audio
Codec:PCM S16 LE (sowt)
Channels: 1
Sample Rate: 32000 Hz
Bitrate: 512 kb/s
Stream 2:
Type: Audio
Codec:PCM S16 LE (sowt)
Channels: 1
Sample Rate: 32000 Hz
Bitrate: 512 kb/s
Stream 3:
Type: Audio
Codec:PCM S16 LE (sowt)
Channels: 1
Sample Rate: 32000 Hz
Bitrate: 512 kb/s
Stream 4:
Type: Video
Codec: (DV Video (dvc)
Resolution: 720 x 480
Frame Rate: 29.970030
Decoded Format: Planar 4:1:1 YUV
If anyone can point in the right direction, I'd much appreciate it.I ended up just using iMovie to capture video from the camera. The clips now play in stereo in QuickTime perfectly.
It's interesting to note that iMovie saves the clips as .dv file types, not .mov file types like FCPX does.
And it turns out the iMovie capture is *much* smoother. It actually "just works." Ingesting tapes with FCPX, I had to cross my fingers, spin on my head and pray three times to a statue of Steve Jobs before it would work (and even then it would do weird stuff).
The only downside of using iMovie is that it doesn't have the camera archive feature.
I really don't understand why, with $120 billion in the bank, Apple seems to be churning out software as an afterthought. No, software is not where they make their money, but they are ruining their reputation. Ah, well, first world problems. -
Problem with compressor 2.01

All is regular when I export the movie with Quick time.
This happens to me for the first time I used Final cut.
The second problem is that when I try to reinstall compressor from the original CD, compressor is gray and not black.
I've used yet every possibilities also with Disk warrior applcation without succes
Please help me. Thank youYou need to update to Compressor 2.3.1 for Leopard compatibility.
